I love the decor at this place…read more We absolutely have enjoyed every single menu item we have tried here. The Guacamole is fresh, feel free to add bacon because that is always a good idea. The ceviches are always beautiful, fresh, and tasty. I love the tacos and my husband is a big fan of the Barbacoa de Cordero. I always order the Strawberry Margarita, it is one of my favorite cocktails in Baltimore. The service is a little odd (we were charged twice last time, that was a whole headache) and it is beyond loud in here, so I cannot recommend it for a date night. We will keep coming back for the quality food and drinks.

The Hype Is Absolutely Deserved!…read more Clavel is a highly acclaimed, family-run mezcaleria and taqueria in Baltimore -- and after finally visiting, I completely understand the hype! First things first: they don't take reservations, so plan accordingly! We arrived around 5:45 p.m. and were quoted a 45-minute wait. Apparently, if you arrive after 5:45, you should be prepared to wait anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Thankfully, around 6 p.m., a few people got up from their seats at the bar and we QUICKLY grabbed them. Crisis averted! We started with the Mezcalita with cilantro honey, which came highly recommended by the bartender. It was SO delicious -- the perfect balance of sweet and spice without either overpowering the other. For my second drink, I switched to the Suero, made with El Buho Mezcal Espadin, green mango, lemon, agua mineral, and Himalayan pink salt. It was completely different from the Mezcalita -- super refreshing, crisp, and not sweet at all. Both were excellent! Then came the food. We started with the Queso Fundido -- bubbling hot queso Chihuahua with guacamole and frijoles y totopos. I mean...you really can't go wrong with bubbling cheese. For our tacos, my friend went all in on the mushroom tacos while I decided variety was the move. I ordered: Barbacoa de Borrego -- house-butchered lamb and beef shank cooked with Mexican coffee, Negra Modelo, and spices. El Luchador -- lightly battered cod with house-pickled cabbage slaw, habanero crema, and cilantro. Al Gobernador -- wild-caught Pacific shrimp in salsa Anaheim with melted queso Chihuahua and pico de gallo. All three were delicious, but I loved being able to try such different flavors and textures in one meal. The ingredients tasted fresh, everything was flavorful, and you can tell there's real thought and care behind the menu. The restaurant itself is also deceiving! From the outside, Clavel looks fairly small, but once you're inside, it's anything but. There are so many little twists, turns, rooms, and tucked-away spaces -- and somehow every single one of them was packed. I also loved the rustic, traditional Mexican-inspired décor. It feels warm, lively, and authentic without trying too hard. And the service matched the food! Everyone we interacted with was friendly and helpful, and our bartender's cocktail recommendation was spot-on. From the drinks to the tacos to the atmosphere and service, everything was superb. Clavel absolutely lived up to its reputation, and I already can't wait to go back -- I'll just be getting there BEFORE 5:45 next time.

This that last min dinner run or date night…read more It so mixy, vibey and energetic here; it almost feels like a slice of lower Manhattan New York. I love they have a waiting room, that doubles at a Carryout pick up and merch shop, so genius. It reminds me that Baltimore food scene is on the rise. I've been here before with my chef and the back of house crew, but I had to run it back; because I loved it Food was great, I enjoyed the queso fundido, the chihuahua queso was delight. The tacooooooos, this gotta be their bread and butter I definitely bodied it. The flan was classic, I got what I expected. Definitely high on my recommendation list, if you haven't you should go and if you have it's probably been a minute go run it back solo or w/ the homies

The meat was flavorful, well seasoned, and served with onions, cilantro, radishes, and lime. The red salsa packet deserves a special mention. It had a great smoky flavor with a spicy kick that I enjoyed. The service was excellent. The staff checked on us several times and made sure we were okay. The restaurant itself feels very authentic, with Mexican snacks, desserts, and beverages available. My only suggestion would be to provide wet wipes at the tables because the tacos can get pretty messy (which is usually a good sign when it comes to great tacos!). Overall, this is easily one of the top taco spots I've visited in Baltimore. Great food, friendly service, authentic atmosphere, and reasonable prices.

Super cute spot offering scrumptious tacos and mouth-watering drinks…read more I came in wanting to get take-out and decided to order the ribeye tacos with a side of pina salsa. The service was a bit slow, but there was only one person doing bar and taking orders, so she was getting everyone as fast as she could. Since I got takeout I didn't get to try their drink selection, but they looked absolutely divine. The tacos had an amazing flavor and the onions were caramelized to perfection, but overall it was a bit dry. There was a crema on top, but it didn't help to add moisture. The pina salsa was incredible though-- you can tell they use fresh pineapple instead of canned, and it wasn't spicy at all. The to-go order even came with a really cute branded bag! I would definitely recommend this spot. However next time I go, I would get some extra sauce on the side to make up for the dryness.

Don't let the outside deceive you. Once you walk in you'll smell the fresh cilantro and chile. It took a bit to translate the menu, but you'll figure it out. There are plenty of options. The server helped us figure it out and we were set. I ordered the El pastor tacos, beans & rice, and tortilla chips. The tacos were theeee best! What I loved the most is that the corn tortillas didn't fall apart!!! I hate it when I go to eat a taco and it falls apart. They cooked the tortillas enough so they held up, but were still soft. Did I already say how good the tacos were?! Along with the meat is cilantro, some onions, and you can top it with some green chili sauce. Sooooo good! The pico de Gallo was some of the best I've ever had. I know what you're thinking. How could you go wrong with pico de Gallo? Yeah, I wonder the same thing, but this pico was FRESH with just the right ratio of tomato, onion, cilantro, etc. Next time I'll order two of them. The chips are restaurant-made. That was our first indicator that the food was going to be ALL that we hoped it would be. AND it was. The beans were pinto beans. Memories from home and the ultimate comfort food. The were cooked perfectly with just enough seasoning. The rice was perfectly cooked too. This is the taco spot you need to try.
