What makes this restaurant special is that it was created by a son who wanted to showcase his mother's recipes, and you can truly taste that homemade Southern flavor in every dish. We tried the chicken croquettes, honey biscuits, fish and grits with Creole sauce, and a skillet. The honey biscuits were absolutely amazing, and the fish and grits were seasoned perfectly. Everything tasted fresh and made from scratch. The hospitality was 10/10. The staff was welcoming, attentive, and made us feel right at home. Today was honestly a waste of time. I found this restaurant on TikTok and thought it would be a nice place to take the ladies I train for a fun brunch outing. Unfortunately, the experience was terrible from start to finish. We had reservations for 10:45 AM on May 23. Due to the rain, we arrived around 10:53, but some of the ladies were already there waiting. After being seated, it took about 15 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us to ask for drinks. We all ordered water... and then we waited. And waited. About 30-40 minutes passed without anyone taking our food order, even though the restaurant was not busy. We noticed another group who came in after us eventually just get up and leave. Honestly, we should have done the same. Around 11:30, as we were gathering our things to leave, the owner came over asking where we were going. I explained that no one had taken our order and that we were hungry. She convinced us to stay and brought out chicken croquettes and biscuits "to hold us over." The biscuits were decent, but the croquettes were not good. Then we waited ANOTHER hour. Our food didn't arrive until around 12:30 PM. During that time, my sister and I literally walked to another restaurant nearby, ordered food there, ate, and came back -- and our food had just arrived. To make matters worse, the chicken was undercooked. As shown in the photo, it was raw inside and dripping excessively. Absolutely unacceptable and unsafe. On top of all of that, when I went to pay, I noticed I was being overcharged. I had to ask for an itemized receipt, and suddenly the total dropped significantly. That alone was frustrating and unprofessional. The overall environment was also uncomfortable. The cook was sweating heavily over the food while talking, which did not make the experience any better. I paid for meals my family didn't even enjoy just to leave and go somewhere else to actually eat. The only thing decent about this experience was the homemade-style biscuits. I do not recommend this restaurant if you are expecting good service, timely food, professionalism, or quality control. Let's start with the 10 minutes I stood at the door while being told they were going to clean off a table for me. I got there a little after 2 pm on a Saturday and it was not busy. Multiple tables were dirty and the servers were moving very slow. I really wanted to taste the food so I waited patiently to be served. I then watched as they cleaned the empty tables before I was even given a menu, an hour later I received undercooked bacon, and weirdly flavored grits, eggs that were sparsely sprinkled with cheese that was an up charge. The only good thing was the sweet pancakes. Now I am watching at how long it's taking for the table near me to get checked out, and it seems like their bill is messed up. We have driven by this establishment before but never paid attention. I found it on google and I'm glad we tried it. It is a family owned restaurant so it's always great to support local. The venue is beautiful. We were able to get a reservation online fairly easily. There is ample parking. The hostess and server both were so kind and warm. Cassandra our server was very caring! She made good recommendations made sure we had a pleasant experience! The food is delicious! The pictures don't do it justice. The sweet potato pancakes with the cinnamon sugar butter is perfect. I'm giving 5 stars for the food and ambience of the restaurant. I am a consistent customer because of the awesome story (read the plaque on the wall). As someone that wants the restaurant to stick around, I must share...you all need more help. I've visited during the week as a party or 1-2, morning time, afternoon time, and on the weekends with bigger parties and every single time I've came, the team members are swamped, food takes way too long to come out, people are flustered. They're open from the morning to late afternoon, and there's plenty of parking. They have some outdoor seating, but not much. Walking in, you get seated to your table and it looks like a typical brunch restaurant. This is the place to go if you're wanting soul or southern style food. I got the chicken croquettes, shrimp and grits, and sweet potato pancakes. The croquettes were smaller than I had expected, but was perfectly crispy and paired well with the Cajun sauce. The shrimp and grits are made with Gouda cheese, 5 seasoned shrimps, and is very large. There were some clumps in the grits but wasn't as bad as other places. It is pretty heavy, and wished there were some more shrimp but overall was rich and flavorful. I had ordered the sweet potato pancake breakfast, but only got the pancakes. Despite the mistake, the pancakes were paired nicely with cinnamon honey butter, fluffy, and not too sweet which is perfect for me. I've held out as long as I can writing this updated review! I've been pretty loyal to this spot since it opened. For a while, my friends and I would come here nearly every Sunday after church. We had gotten on a first name basis with several of the wait staff. The last 5 or more visits have been awful and today was the last straw for me! We've experienced the restaurant running out of food and not notifying us until 45 minutes into our dining time (on at least 3 occasions). We experienced the owner coming in with Walmart bags of groceries trying to fulfill orders. We've experienced undercooked fish and accountability avoidance more than I've ever experienced at any establishment! The restaurant is clean has attentive staff/service, & parking is very accessible. The lot is about medium sized and is neighboring with a Panera Bread. I would say it may get crowded on weekends. I can't imagine there being an extremely long wait as the service was pretty quick (but don't hold me to that, again, I can picture them getting crowded on weekends). The food was delicious! It tasted fresh and of great quality. I am eager to try other dishes that were on the menu like the catfish and grits, fried lobster and waffles, mac n cheese, and many more. Our waitress recommended a lot of items as they all seem to meet expectations. I like that they also have some healthier options for anyone who may not be super into fried food. The only reason why I'm not giving it 5 stars is simply because of how they prepare their Honey Butter Biscuits. It was easy to find off Cherokee Street. There is plenty of free parking. It is a medium size establishment. We went at right time with no wait and few tables left. The wait staff was friendly. I was a little concerned because seating appeared full. However , there was a table that was out of my view that we were placed next to the bar. Our waiter was Tyler and he is AWESOME! Tyler greeted us immediately and ensured we had everything we needed. Once Tyler found out it was our first visit he made sure to give us a thorough run down of the menu and even gave us recommendations. When I say EVERY recommendation Tyler gave was on point, it. Was ON POINT!!! Here is what we ordered: Appetizer: Crab cake - my my my, more crab than breading just how I like it - DELISH! Entree: Fried Catfish & Grits w/side of collards - ALL items were seasoned to perfection. I only asked for hot sauce because I like a little kick in my collards and catfish but I could have honestly devoured it without it - DELISH! My honey elected the Chicken & Waffle but he substituted the waffle for the sweet potatoes pancakes per Tyler's recommendation - TASTE SO GOOD MAKE YOU WANNA SLAP YO MOMMA LOL -DELISH!! Cocktail: French 75 Bloody Mary Coffee Old Fashion - Every single drink listed was top notch. But ya'll this right here was AMAZING!! The overall ambiance is very nice, relaxing and there are nice paintings mounted on the walls. There's a nice range of music playing in the background at the right volume, just enough to groove and carry a conversation with your party without having to elevate your voices. I think the prices are reasonable and well worth it. I highly recommend checking this establishment out if you're in the Marietta area. Pros: Nice ambience, parking was ok; wait time wasn't too long. Sweet potato pancakes & honey biscuits were good. Cons: Waiting area is really small; wait time for food was 30 minutes for our appetizer/30 for our entrees; ordered a sprite and got a can with no "refills"; grits lacked seasoning and the catfish was too salty. Disappointing Experience - Not Worth the Hype I had high hopes for Phyllis after reading great reviews on Yelp, but unfortunately, our experience fell far short of expectations. My wife and I chose this place for a Valentine's Day weekend date, and let's just say we left with the firm decision to never return. Upon arrival, we were greeted and seated quickly, which was a good start. Our waiter brought water and gave us time to look over the menu. So far, so good. However, things quickly took a turn. When my wife asked about mocktails, she was simply told no--despite the restaurant having a full bar. The waiter said they had Fanta orange as a choice if she wanted that instead lol. There was no offer to make a non-alcoholic version of an existing drink or even a suggestion for an alternative. It was an immediate red flag for the level of service we were about to receive. Then came my ordering experience, which was frustrating beyond belief. I initially wanted the catfish and grits--they were out of catfish. No problem, I'll go with the steak--they were out of steak. Okay, let me try the biscuits--no biscuits. Fine, how about the cornbread? No cornbread either. At this point, I asked the waiter, what do you actually have? He suggested the lobster plate, but I don't like lobster. By this time, the lack of communication and preparation was incredibly frustrating. A restaurant being out of a couple of items is understandable, but this was a significant portion of the menu, and no one informed us before we sat down. Feeling forced into a choice, I ended up ordering the chicken and waffle, the same as my wife--something we never do as foodies who love trying different dishes. This was not a meal we were excited about but rather a reluctant last resort with the lack of available menu options. When our chicken and waffles arrived, I have to admit--the waffle was really good. This was the one highlight of the evening. The chicken wings were cooked well, fresh, and hot, with a solid seasoning blend. However, they were almost on the verge of being too salty, just stopping short of being overwhelming. I'd rate the wings a 3.5/5 for that reason. The presentation was nice, too--the food was served on fine china, which gave the impression that they cared about the dining experience. But then, in a moment that perfectly summed up the night, the server handed us plastic utensils to eat with. Yes, after presenting our food on elegant white plates, we were given the kind of cutlery you'd expect at a backyard cookout. My wife couldn't help but ask the server why they'd go through the trouble of using fancy dishware only to pair it with plastic utensils. His response? He didn't have time to wash the silverware because he was the only one working--just him and the cook. At this point, nothing surprised us anymore. We just nodded and moved on, realizing there was no point in arguing over an experience that was already beyond saving. If this is the level of service and preparation that Phyllis finds acceptable, then it's clear we're just not their target customers. I genuinely wanted to love this place, but it was disappointing from start to finish. Marietta has way too many solid restaurants to justify coming back here. Final rating: 1/5. Definitely won't return. Id also be more understanding if they were packed. There were only 2 other tables in the entire place.
