What a fantastic first visit! Located in Marietta Square, this hidden gem has a cool speakeasy vibe and a varied selection of small plates. They're transitioning their entire menu to a small-plate concept, which is perfect for sampling several dishes. The salad was incredibly fresh, and the meatballs were chef's kiss! I sat at the bar and had the pleasure of meeting Ariel, the downstairs speakeasy bartender and creative mind behind their craft cocktails. I truly enjoyed our conversation and learning more about his creations. I will definitely be back! read more

I'm extremely disappointed with my experience at Marietta Proper in Marietta. We arrived around 5:00 PM on a Saturday without a reservation. The restaurant was not even half full, yet we were told that the indoor tables were "reserved" and that our only option was to sit at the bar. After going back and forth with the host, Jess, we were eventually offered outdoor seating, which we accepted. We ended up sitting outside for approximately two hours. However, when we were leaving, we noticed that the indoor tables we had been told were reserved were still empty. In fact, they appeared to have never been reserved at all. That was extremely frustrating because we would have gladly sat inside if we had simply been told the truth from the beginning. Jess was pleasant enough when we first arrived, but toward the end of our meal, the service became noticeably inconsiderate. Our dishes were left piled on the table while we were given the check, rather than having the table cleared and maintained appropriately. It made the end of the dining experience feel rushed and neglected. After finishing our meal, we asked to speak with a manager to express our concerns. Unfortunately, the only resolution we received was an apology. An apology is appreciated, but in this situation, it did not address the larger issue. The experience left me feeling that we were treated differently for not having a reservation, despite the restaurant having plenty of available seating. Based on this experience, I will not be returning to Marietta Proper. There are far too many restaurants in the Atlanta/Marietta area where customers can expect to be treated with honesty, consideration, and basic hospitality. read more

I met a girlfriend for brunch and we had a great time! Parking is really annoying here so definitely leave extra time - but it just is what it is in Marietta Square. The service was great - friendly and very patient with us as we chit chatted! The restaurant itself is beautiful! Really very chic! I tried the following: Kale Salad $16 Braised Beef Dip $17 Side of Aioli $0.50 Bee's Knees Bites $8 After my friend got her delicious burger and I took a bite of my husband's beef dip, I greatly regretted getting the salad! Haha! The kale salad was fine, but it was quite sad and not something I'd ever order again. The goat cheese balls on the top were the star. The beef dip was stellar! Really quite flavorful! There were some pieces in there that were wayyyyyy over done, but it really was just so good. I'd probably get it for my main next time I'm back! The goat cheese balls are a must. Just get them and pray you don't have to share! I could make a meal of them they are the perfect balance of crispy salty and sweet with the sauce! It's a great place for a little brunch with plenty to choose from! read more

This place was pretty cool. I went here on a Friday evening. We sat outside at a table and just ordered a cocktail. They had live music going on and we were able to enjoy that from the outside looking in. It was quite busy, but someone soon came to take our orders. They ran out of water glasses, so I suggested ours be brought out in to go cups. ( which was no big deal). After enjoying the weather, decided to check out their speakeasy. It was a different vibe downstairs. The mixolofist was cool and informative. We ordered a drink down there. Listened to the dope Playlist and enjoyed each other's conversation. I would love to come back for ladies night. read more

I came here for a girls night mid-week, and what a great choice! We just stopped in for drinks and small bites, but I definitely would love to come back to try more. The service at the bar was great, and the atmosphere of the place felt about as Europeon as you're going to get in Marietta. My girlfriends enjoyed their cocktails, and I had a nice tea. I loved the arancini and my friends also enjoyed the biscoff dessert and goat cheese bites. read more

Really love the ambiance and the espresso martinis here. Sometimes it's hard to get a table but just keep trying.

Nestled right in Marietta Square. This is a super cute restaurant. Walking in feels like stepping into a time capsule not to mention they have a (secret) speakeasy with passcode entry. They also have brunch, lunch, and dinner which is a plus! I really wanted to love my experience here (and the customer service is fine, that wasn't rely my issue) however I feel like the menu was all over the place. I guess I just can't really tell what this restaurant is going for. I enjoyed my meal there, I had a Proper Burger the first time and pot roast the second time but it wasn't anything that I'm gushing over and can't wait to return to. I've been twice now and I think it's a solid restaurant, but I think the menu needs a little revamping and I probably won't be back anytime soon. read more

Very poor experience overall: poor service, noisy atmosphere, expensive and bland drinks, tiny and expensive apps, uninspired and bland main courses. Waited 20 minutes for our cocktails. The live music, which was not good and unnecessary considering there was a live concert outside, was so loud we couldn't hear ourselves think. The wait staff acted as if we were a chore the entire time. The entire experience was exhausting except for our dear friends whom we haven't seen in a while. Thank god they were there. If this is Marietta Proper, I'd hate to see what Marietta Common is. Yikes. read more

Food was decent. Dessert was better. Service was outstanding. Drinks were ok. Excellent location of course. And ambiance is on par with its stated theme (1920s parlor). I wouldn't mind coming back here again. read more

Yay This is such a wonderful upscale restaurant to have lunch or dinner at! They have a great menu with different things on it and nothing is too heavy. I would have given five stars but I got a takeout of the peanut butter espresso martini and it was disgusting and tasted like soap and I was so sad. To be clear that has never happened and anytime I've been there everything has been great. read more

This restaurant will be in my rotation because it's so good. Some of my girlfriends had dinner here and it was so wonderful. The service was great. Our waitress frequently checked in on us and gave us recommendations. She didn't hesitate to tell us the truth about some of our choices and I really appreciated that. We started off with appetizers. The fried goat cheese is wonderful and so is the brussels sprouts. The brussels sprouts are big enough to share, but you're not gonna want to because they're so good. For dinner two of us got the short rib bite and my other friend got the salmon. The short rib was very good and tender. The only thing that made me mad is the plate was so small. But the restaurant is top of style, although the short rib bites are labeled under large plates. Just not large enough...lol. While dining, I saw some customers walk around the corner and go down a secret door. Come to find out they have a speakeasy downstairs. I had no idea. We asked the waitress do you have to have reservations to go down there? She said it is recommended but we could just go to the host stand and see if they had anything available. So after we finished dinner, we went downstairs and enjoyed the vibes. I will say it's a very nice speakeasy. And the drinks were good. They're not the same drinks that you can get in the restaurant part. I let the bartender make a drink for me so what I got really didn't have a name. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and the speakeasy to anyone. I'll definitely be going back. read more

My husband is still raving about this spot the following morning! If you're looking for a cozy neighborhood go-to spot, don't sleep on this one! We were able to make reservations for a Sunday dinner. It's a smaller restaurant, and for a Sunday, it got to be pretty busy. (good sign) The excellent service, romantic ambience, and exceptional food quality totally eclipsed our lackluster greeting. The decor was straight from a 1920's speakeasy a'la The Great Gatsby, and surprise! (to me anyway) there's an actual speakeasy below the main dining area. Our server Marisa was engaging, warm, and very helpful. While I could see her being very busy behind the bar (those espresso martinis!), she was still attentive without being overbearing. Great selections on the menu, whether you prefer tapas-style shareable bites or a larger main dish that's big enough for 2 to share. Reasonably priced, and all of what we got tasted amazing! Full bar menu included several non-alcoholic cocktails and beverages. Who knew? But it looked like the espresso martini flights were the main attraction! We'll be back just to try those!! For our starters, we tried the short ribs, mushroom dumplings, and fried goat cheese. YUMMM!! There were actually a good selection of vegetarian options on their small menu. We chose to share the orange chicken with a side of brussels sprouts, and we were blown away by how tender the chicken was while still having that crispness of the glazed skin. Wow!! Bonus for us was the gentleman who so kindly kept clearing our dishes turned out to be the owner Will! Super friendly and even offered to take us to see the speakeasy downstairs! Just really made us feel welcome. And learning that we could host private events downstairs, we may just make up something to do it. We cannot wait to come back! read more

Ambiance- lively, louder than expected, very cute decor Service- ok, waitress seems like this was just a job Food- had several small plates and one large plate. The arancini and meatballs were amazing! We got filets for our large plate. I have never had a worse steak in my life. I tried to keep eating it but it was so bad, I never not eat a steak. I only had 3 bites. It tasted like it was spoiled. My husband had the other filet and completely agreed. Didn't let the owners know bc I didn't want to wait for another steak since it was the end of our meal and we were with others. So not sure how they would have resolved it. Give it 2.5 stars read more

Sadly, every time I have been here the service has been horrible. The fact the servers don't smile and look like they are annoyed to be working is the least of the disappointment. I sat for an hr after my server clocked out and not on waiter came to help me. I had to ask for water and then for someone to clear my plates that had been there since my server left. I asked, "are you my server", the man said "no, the bartender has these tables" . Two bartenders behind the bar were just hanging out, never one glance my direction to make eye contact. I also watched a table at the front get up and bring water cups to the bar to ask for water. Plenty of staff was walking round but not sure why they wouldn't treat the guests like gold. I tip very well, especially after a couple cocktails and great service. I was planning on having a couple cocktails while I was turning off my work computer. I finally packed up and went to Marietta Wine Bar. The atmosphere is AMAZING , food good. I even brought folks in to see the speak easy and consider for an event they are hosting next month, but I can't trust the staff can perform. Mac's and Hamp's services is always impeccable, I wish Proper could get to that level of service. read more

We came here on a Sunday for brunch right when they opened and had no difficulties getting a table for two. The service here was slower, especially for how few patrons were in there. There was one menu at the table, but nobody (hostess or waitress) gave us menus, so we took one off an empty table nearby. The hostess was within our line of vision but was scrolling and did not seem to visually attend. We both got french press coffee, which was just ok in my opinion. Not very strong flavor profile. The shrimp and grits and the bees knees bites were pretty good though! I'd recommend looking at the menu beforehand. They are open at 11am and offer "brunch" items which are only a few, but they're mostly lunch items. The restaurant is super cute and nicely decorated and I could it see it being a lot more lively during dinner or happy hour times. I don't know that I'd go back there for brunch or even lunch time due to their limited menu items and I feel like there are other restaurants nearby that offer true brunch. Overall, it was just ok-nothing great or special, but also could have been way worse. read more

I ate outside on their patio the other day and was pleasantly surprised. We originally went in the beginning but they've definitely worked the kinks out since and expanded their food menu! I have now visited this place twice. The first visit was for ladies night on Wednesday during the summer! The drinks were superb. Their signature cocktail drinks were very tasty and once we went into the speakeasy, my girlfriend and I had old-fashioned! Everything was great. My second visit was more recent on a Friday night! This is a super cute wine bar and some really good cocktails with some great food options! We loved the whole ambiance when we came in from the decor to the playlist they had going. First, the service was great. Our waitress, Patience was very knowledgeable and was able to tell us in great detail about all of the items on the menu which helped us in picking some delicious choices. She recommended the Buffalo Cauliflower, which had great flavor and crispness. We've been thinking about them ever since. The Jamaican chicken empanadas weren't our favorite but they weren't horrible just wouldn't order again. And the short rib comes as an appetizer or a main entree which we ordered the appetizer portion and it was sooo good!! We wanted cocktails for this outgoing, despite going to a wine bar which we were pleased with. For dessert, since it was my birthday we got a on the house strawberry basil cheesecake, which wasn't bad and a Pistachio Ricotta Cake which I really enjoyed its spongy, semi-sweetness. Overall, we can't wait to go back! read more

Marietta Proper exceeded my expectations. A friend suggested it and I was on the fence, having heard they served "small plates with large prices", but I now know better and disagree! Our server, Patience was fabulous. She helped me select a wine which was perfectly to my taste. My friends and I shared queso and chips, shrimp toast, and the cauliflower. It was all delish and enough food for the 3 of us. I did not leave hungry. The shrimp toast was especially tasty. The decor at Marietta Proper is well done. Excellent attention to detail. Great food. Limited menu but everything we tried was excellent. Really enjoyed the laidback vibe downstairs. We'll be back

I found this spot while at Oktoberfest. There is lots of outside seating, which is wonderful. The inside is gorgeous and various aesthetically pleasing. I arrived just before they opened at 11 and sat on the patio. The server came out to greet me a little early and took my drink order. They had a very eclectic menu which I loved. I ordered the citrus beet salad and it was delicious. The servers checked on me several times never leaving me to wonder where they were. I'm only giving it four stars because somebody else was there with dogs that were barking a lot and the barks were very high-pitched which I found annoying and nobody asked them to go elsewhere, which resulted in me packing up and leaving early. I understand it's not your situation and I don't mind dogs on patios where they are allowed. If you have an annoying dog, be kind to those around you and do not bring them. read more

I very much recommend this place for a nice night on the square. We popped in on a Tuesday night, and it was busy but not full. Hubs was very hungry, so he started with the burnt ends and we shared the bruschetta. The burnt ends were considered a small plate, which is their smallest portion, but this was a big serving. You could definitely share this as an app. I had a bite, and they were super good. The bruschetta was great! It's a bun quartered, but it seemed bigger than that. The bread was crispy but not hard like bruschetta can be. I appreciated that it was a bit softer. For entrees we had the short rib and shrimp ravioli. Both were awesome. The portions were good, but if you are famished, you'll need an app or two. The drinks were nice. We both had the play on an old fashion with uncle nearest bourbon and maple. They were sweet but good. They felt strong enough. If I ordered it again (which I will), I'd ask them to cut the sweetness a little. The desserts were ok but not a must. They didn't have a lot of the ones we wanted to try. The puff pastry with fruit was good and large, but wasn't anything special. Dessert was the low point of the meal, but it was fine. Service was kind and attentive. read more

My sister and I were looking for a breakfast spot in Marietta and we stumbled upon this one. The restaurant is located in the heart of Marietta Square. Parking can be a struggle. We got lucky and found someone leaving. We only had to walk 1 block. Upon walking in there is no indication of what you should do. We were just looking around and had to ask a staff member to be seated. There needs to be a host stand or a sign indicating you can seat yourself. We were seated at a bar height table. I will say the table and chairs are cute, however, the foot bar on the chair is a hazard. It is slippery and I foresee someone hurting themselves. Our wait staff was Patience. She took our drink orders first. When the drinks came out she took our food orders. I ordered a cappuccino with oat milk. My sister ordered a macchiato with oat milk. I really enjoyed my drink. The coffee is solid! They do offer flavored syrups for your coffee drinks if you desire that. Please also note that they serve traditional macchiato's. Don't expect a large serving size for this drink. I ordered The Proper breakfast which is basically eggs, protein, and house fries. My sister opted for the croissant sandwich with a side of fruit. The food came out in decent time. If you see my pictures you will note that it does not look appetizing! It also was not tasty. Saying it's average is being generous. The only item that had decent flavor was the home fries. If you know me, I typically clean my plate. I left plenty on this one. It was just not good. The saving grace of this place is the decor and coffee. It's a cute space, but it's just not enough for a restaurant. The food has to shine! I will say that maybe the lunch and dinner is better. However, I can't say that I will be finding out. read more

It was my first time at this restaurant ad I'm between a 3.5 and a 4. I went here with friends for our annual birthday dinner. Parking in Marietta Square is always a challenge but we found a spot in a lot near the food hall. It's a short walk away. Once we got inside and I gave my name for the reservation, the hostess pointed us in the direction of our table which was a little odd. I am normally escorted but no big deal- we're a pretty laid back group so we just walked to our table. The server came by and took out drink orders. He was nice and professional. He talked us through the menu, pointing out their popular dishes. We ended up ordering a few different dishes to share since the concept is tapas. Some menu items were marked as gluten free so I didn't mentioned that I required gluten free. When the beets and burrata salad came out, I noticed the bread on the dish that looked very glutinous. While I didn't eat the salad I did taste an apple from the dish and it was delicious. The salad was marked gluten free on the menu but our server did confirm the bread in fact was not GF. I was a little disappointed when the tuna tartare arrived at the table because it was being served with wontons- glutinous wontons. So our server offered me Gluten free bread. I feel like menu items should be listed as MGF if they are not leaving the kitchen as a GF dish. The shrimp toast was tasty as was the queso and chorizo served with house made chips. They have a good wine selection along with cocktails. The espresso martini is also very good here, a lot better than some I've had recently. I would go back for the espresso martini for sure and maybe a bite to eat. read more
