oxtail pho
Angie Y.

As somebody who is usually a hater of modern takes of asian cuisine, I was pleasantly surprise by this spot. I stumbled across it on a Sunday morning craving some warm pho and stumbled across this location. I ordered the oxtail pho, and the meat was incredibly tender. There was surprisingly a LOT of oxtail for the price, $24 which I thought was a pretty good value. The broth tasted complex and flavorful, and the rice noodles were cooked perfectly. The bowl was huge and the broth piping hot, portion was so large I ended up taking almost half home! If you're looking for creative, modern Vietnamese dishes that put a clever spin on classics rather than strictly traditional flavors, this is your spot. If you're specifically looking for a more authentic Vietnamese experience, this may not be your pick, but they have plenty of other dishes I'm excited to come back and try like the wagyu pho and the birria pho. Parking on-site is a huge plus, and the restaurant was impressively clean, (including the condiments) and my server was also so sweet and not disruptively attentive as somebody who was dining alone.

I don't like to give restaurants bad reviews but eating at Photage was uniquely disappointing. It's usually disappointing to eat Vietnamese food in Los Angeles, so my expectations are typically low but this experience was worse because how poorly the pho was made and how forgetful the servers were. I'll start with the bright side: parking. There is a small but free parking lot in front of the restaurant in a shared plaza. Now for the food: I ordered the oxtail pho. The bowl of pho was $21(typical LA price) but there was very little oxtail meat. It was mostly fat and bone that was in the bowl. The broth tasted like water and it seemed like they never simmer the bones or spices in the broth. It tasted like hot water and nothing else. For the service, the waiters forgot to give me the sauce plate, even though I asked multiple times. They also did not know what hanh dam was so I had to show them on google what it was. It also took a surprising amount of time to get the bowl of pho. They didn't have vinegar so just gave me raw onions. Not sure if they make it fresh, but that might be why the broth is missing flavor. This is definitely not an authentic Vietnamese restaurant if you're looking for one. The ambience is decent and clean, but there are better places to go for pho.

Wagyu Beef Pho

Decent fusion Vietnamese spot in west la. Tried it since there aren't many Vietnamese options around this part of town. Ordered a variety of dishes to see how they measure up. Wanted to like it but I still prefer traditional pho, banh mi and pork chop rice. The ingredients were fresh and of quality and the portion was decent. But the fusion flavor and presentation just didn't work for me. I still prefer traditional pho broth with lemon grass flavor, a real pork chop rice with omelet and banh mi sandwich made with Vietnamese baguette with a crunch. The fish sauce wings were very good though. Service was friendly and the vibe is for hipsters.

When I was at UCLA hospital for treatment, my coordinator ordered me the Wagyu Pho because I wanted something soupy. The broth was decent and they did give you plenty of meat to noodle ratio. Although the price is a little high, $22...but it's not bad for this area.

Loved my jidori chicken as per usual! So perfect for summer. That fish sauce I can drink all day every day! So fresh and delicious. I love the generous portion of rice noodles, fresh veggies, lettuce, chicken, fish sauce and it comes with a fried imperial roll on top. Sooo Yummy!!! My boyfriend got the Bun Bo hue soup (spicy lemongrass and pork and beef). He thought it was okay, as he always orders soup here even tho I try to steer him otherwise as I know he's not going to be happy with it (sigh). This time I got the pork and shrimp roll as an appetizer and it was not my favorite roll. The pork tasted kind of dry. Would try other rolls next time. Still obsessed with that chicken!!

Can't believe I haven't written a review about this place! I've come here for close to 10 years on and off. And over the years, I think they've improved and added more items to their menu. I don't know if they can count as a cheap eat, but it is really affordable and the quality is quite good. My favorite item is your natural oxtail pho! Only a few Vietnamese places offer this dish and I think there's is one of the best! If you're a meat eater, or if you like fall off the bone, short ribs, then this is the dish for you. We've also tried their Wagyu beef pho and liked it too. Very tentative service, though they are always busy with lots of takeout orders, they remember to take care of the dine in customers. A very small and casual place, the ambience is relaxed and day-to-day bistro. It's a great restaurant for this neighborhood (Palms, Cheviott Hills ) and I hope they keep doing good business here.

Anahi was a really attentive and amazing server! Really good service, and also amazing food. The wagyu pho was a pretty good portion with plenty of soup. Was surprised that it had that kind of fishy Vietnamese food vibe that made it seem more authentic. Definitely come here for a good time!

Was craving pho in the morning so decided to give a local shop a try since it was within 10 mins of walking distance. I'll say it was one of the most disappointing Pho I've tried in a very long time and I expected better. Pho's most important part - broth. It had a slight funky sourness to it with no in-depth flavor. Nothing screamed of broth boiling over night nor did it taste traditional. Not even close to even a modern Pho restaurants. The shop is rather small and its most definitely not a traditional pho, but an interesting twist to it. Imo not to its benefit. Also, it took about 25 mins for it to come out where usually it takes 5 MAYBE 10. Positives: Oxtail fell off the bone and tendons great giving it 3 stars.

Bun Bo Hue (Spicy Lemongrass Noodle Soup with Beef, Pork and Cha Lua)
Anthony T.

I appreciated the quick service and being able to support a vietnamese restaurant out on the Westside. The Bun Bo Hue was solid- good amount of spice and beef bone flavor, with plenty of meat. The only thing I might change is to slice the meat a bit thinner and add more noodles. I also liked the pork vermicelli bowl - light and the meat was perfectly marinated and cooked! Wish that the fish sauce had more oomph to it, but it helped to add lime and sambal. Definitely recommend if you need something to satisfy a craving for viet food, although it doesnt really compare to food found in Little Saigon.

Vegan Pho Gluten Free

Tasty broth and fun promotion on DoorDash. I loved the depth for a vegan broth. The tofu that comes with the vegan pho is fried. I didn't see any unfried options on the menu. Sometimes it's too heavy and the crunchy texture isn't always needed. I'd order again and not get tofu.

Chicken Clay Pot

Visited on a Saturday night. The restaurant is tucked inside a small business plaza with a few parking spots and some street parking nearby. The vibe inside was pleasant and we were greeted by a friendly waiter. He recommended three dishes: the Imperial Rolls, Chicken Clay Pot, and Wagyu Beef Pho. They all sounded great, so we went with his suggestions. Food arrived fairly quickly. The Imperial Rolls were delicious and crispy, but the portion was surprisingly small, just two rolls. The Chicken Clay Pot was also on the small side, with a single chopped chicken breast served alongside a bowl of rice. Unfortunately, it was too heavily on salty-sweet sauce, overcooked chicken, it's just ok. The biggest disappointment was the Wagyu Pho. It came with only two slices of Wagyu and two slices of regular beef, and the broth was watery. It completely lacks the rich depth you expect from a good pho. On the bright side, the service was friendly, so maybe I just caught the kitchen on an off night.

One of the worst pho broths I ever had .... Tastes like dishwater .
Daniel B.

No salt on 3! 3-2-1 , salt tha pho! Salt the pho! Never have I ever had pho broth that was so absolutely tasteless. It was like slurping mildly acidic water. The broth carries the pho-- without it , it's DOA. Okay the Wagyu beef brisket is fine and all, but when it basks in the broth it's gonna absorb more flavor. No addition there either so subtract a couple stars. I mean you can tell the line cook didnt give a tittle if he's gonna give me old and expired crusty sriracha sauce. Wonder how I know? The paste was like a sickening brown hue instead of vibrant blood red. Must have been like over a year old bottle. No excuse me while I go forage for an actual decent meal as whatever it is it won't be here .

No, we don’t!

How sure are you that the French Baguette for the Banh Mi is vegan? I called before you answered my question and one of the employees said it was not.

Sorry just saw this ... but that employee was Misinformed ... the bread contains water flour yeast salt.

Can the Banh Mi be made vegan if you don't add the mayo? I wasn't sure about the French Baguette, since I know that some places have ones that contain milk in them.

Yea it is vegan if you remove the mayo ... the bread is a true french baguette and does not contain milk :)

He was highly professional, apologized for the unacceptable service, assured me he had spoken to the staff so it wouldn't happen again, and went out of his way to completely cover the cost of my order. It takes a lot for a business to own their mistakes and make it right, and I really appreciate that ownership actually cares about their customers. ORIGINAL EXPERIENCE: Do not order delivery directly from their website. I originally placed an order online for a couple beers and two bottles of liquor, and despite living only 2.8 miles away, I was called by an employee named Angelo who told me it would take 4 hours to deliver. When I expressed frustration, he offered zero compensation or alternative solutions. He claimed there was "no manager" to speak to, and told me to just go use DoorDash or Grubhub instead because nobody wanted to drive a moped less than 3 miles. It is incredibly frustrating when a business takes your money for an advertised service, refuses to fulfill it, and then tells you to go pay extra fees on a third-party app. Overall, I'm giving 3 stars because Amar's excellent response and accountability balanced out Angelo's initial terrible service.

I come there to work from my iPad frequently and one day, I needed to take a ZOOM call. The ONE umbrella was taken so I pulled a chair over into a shaded area. The security guard came over to tell me that I was not allowed to pull a chair into the area and that I had to put it back. He did this as my ZOOM call was starting so I hurriedly got up to move and my iPad fell and cracked. I stopped coming as much for awhile because I have seen other people move their chairs to find more shade in the past. Well PLEASE explain why I am here right now and this Asian man is not only allowed to move one chair into that same area but they HELPED him move several chairs and a TABLE to sit in the area that I was asked to move from. I have seen him here on several occasions and maybe he has closer ties? Who knows? What I do know is that what is good for the goose should be good enough for the gander. So if this area is prohibited to sit in, that should be applied to EVERYONE. And then when I tried to address with the woman who works in the office, she snapped at me after I asked if I could ask her a question. Her exact words: "About WHAT??" Once she led with that energy, I asked was she an employee (I have already been told in the past that she is) and she replied, "No, I don't work here." SO i left her alone even after she tried to clean it up by asking if I wanted to speak with the other security guards. I walked away and sat down to write this. But I also asked the security guard (DAVID) who originally told me that I could not pull a chair into the area why it was okay for the person that is sitting there now and he told me that it is because they are employees. He told ME that that are could not be blocked by the ONE chair that I pulled over into a CORNER but they have a whole table and several chairs set up as I type this. The woman who swears she is not an employee (SHE IS) came over to me trying to ask what I needed and I told her I was good and that I was leaving. She said, "Well you're complaining so..." and I cut her right TF off and told her that I was not COMPLAINING; I was asking a VALID question. She then starts talking sh*t telling me that I come there all the time to sit in the courtyard while purchasing nothing. MIND YOU, the local businesses at this location know me by name and/or face (Escala, Silverlake Ramen, Cap't Loui, Starbucks, etc...). This is also a place where transient/unhoused individuals come all the time to sit and rest so imagine saying something so insensitive not knowing what the situation may be. It is a public area and nobody is OBLIGATED to purchase anything. But I DO on a WEEKLY basis so perhaps Miss Girl can get her facts straight. But it's okay. I will be contacting management asap.
