This is my go to when it comes to buying beer. They have nothing but different types of beer you won't find at a regular liquor store, it's that good! They have beer with 7.0 - 10.0 alcohol in them. It's a small spot that's low key, that's how good it is. The cashiers are also friendly. If you want to try something new I recommend it. read more

This tiny shop located in the middle of busy dtla has a decent selection of beer and wine to choose from (and even some coffee)! The owner (I think) was very helpful as I stared blankly at all the options. He walked over and was able to describe the different flavors and his recommendations based on our interests. Prices were fairly cheap as well. (Keep in mind that this is just a store, so don't expect to buy then drink it here!) The only reason I'm giving this place less than 5 stars is that the selection is somewhat limited. This is no big deal, as sometimes it's easier to pick when you've only got a few to choose from. I'm definitely going to drop by this place again when I'm in the area and looking for some beer! read more

My men Rob and Erwin basically get a chunk of my paycheck as I fuel my quasi-alcoholic lifestyle. Weird Beers is a nice little joint with a wide selection of beer. The average price is $10-12 for a 6-pack (we're talking about more craft-style beers here). Staff will answer any stupid questions you might have about the beers, and give you recommendations. Lots of single big bottles for the beer connoisseurs out there. There's kombucha and other fancy non-alcoholic beverages hiding here if you look in the corners. Visa and Mastercard only, no Amex lovin'. But that doesn't stop me from coming back to Weird Beers on a regular basis. read more

The best way to think of Weird Beers is less as a genuine liquor store and more like a convenience store that has gotten rid of almost everything except its beer and wine department - except that beer and wine department is really hip and quirky. Because this is L.A., those damnable IPAs dominate, of course. Lager lovers like me are largely relegated to the "corporate" case of AB InBev trash (Stella, Budweiser, Pacifico, the formerly-good-now-crap Modelo) that no conscientious beer drinker would touch with a ten-foot poison-tipped harpoon. I did manage to find a few things - Artifex's Artifexican Mexican lager, Reissdorf Kölsch, a fancy-pants pilsner made with champagne yeast whose name I can't remember right now - so that was good. It's more than I can find from Whole Foods' single bottle selection. The prices are a bit on the high side, but that's to be expected from this kind of small operation. I would come back to see what new stuff they get; I'd especially like to see them get more imports, though, since the American craft beer scene is pretty much stuck on either 1) IPA! IPA! IPA!, or 2) let's see what weird ingredient we can through into a super-boozy ale this week! Neither of those options interests me in the slightest. read more

There is no way I can be in a neighborhood with a shop called Weird Beers and not check it out. So I took a walk to the Jewelry District in DT LA. You definitely get the local feel in this area. The shop was great. Not a lot of space, but clean, tidy and a great selection of European beers and great American craft. The owners were nice and helpful. Picked up a bottle of Monkish to add to a crowler I was bringing home from a local brewery. Glad I found this nugget. read more

I found beer from Atwater Brewery here the first night that I moved to Los Angeles. It was awesome to drink some Detroit beer when I was missing home a little. I told the guys working that they should have more Michigan beers, like Bell's. I walked two weeks later and found Bell's Two Hearted and Oberon! It's an okay place if you want to pick from some less than readily available beers. However, it is the disorganization of the place and lack of clarity that rates this place low. The beers selections do not seem to follow any categorization and the prices are not all readily viewable. It would also have been nice to have some taste notes paired up for the beers. This is probably the Coolest beer and wine store ever. Walking in and picking out a flavor is always a fun adventure. Think of it as an adult easter egg hunt for suds or perhaps lucking up on Tier Zero Nikes from Blackscale on a random Wednesday. E, J, and A are always happy to show me and the rest of the DTLA enthusiasts the newest and truest brews, all freshly delivered practically every day. The prices are great for what you find, the beer is always exotic and immaculate. I love supporting the WBs crew because they are completely friendly and unpretentious. You can't buy good reputation, these guys earned it from me over the last couple of years, not one bad experience. The shop is not huge, but the beer and wine selection is impeccable. If you're downtown visiting, I highly recommend stopping by and grabbing a strong IPA that you can't find anywhere else. If you live in DTLA, then you already know and perhaps you're trying to keep them as one of your best kept local secrets. I get it, but f*** it, the cat's out the bag my friends, and they deserve the love. WB buyers get beers that Buzz does not have and they'll tell you how many are in stock, so if you love the selection, you can grab a few more before they disappear. But fear not, when your favorite disappears, Weird Beers is absolutely certain to have a few substitutes that will become your New favorites. Stores like this are why I love wandering around DTLA. Buzz was inexplicably closed at 1pm ("the store guy just walked out and I don't know when he's coming back"...wtf?) and I needed beer. GOOD beer, tasty beer, crafty beer. Weird Beer! So a quick yelping turns up just the very place, as if dropped from heaven - a tiny quintessential hole in the wall that is utterly awesome and filled me with happiness: fabulous selection of unusual brews, mostly local but also foreign (Staropramen in the big bottle!) and charmingly friendly, helpful service that really cares. I left with exactly what I was hoping to find: three unexpected, amazing California IPAs I'd never before heard of. They're working towards accommodating tastings soon too.
