This is a perfect venue for a national convention such as the National Recreation and Park Association annual conference I recently attended for five days. Over 6,500 fellow professionals were in attendance. We used many of the individual meeting rooms for educational sessions and the Ballroom was large for all of us to attend the keynote sessions. The architecture is inviting and best of all, the entire facility was cool and comfortable with the 100+ degree temperatures outside. read more

Apparently there's two massive convention sites and reportedly takes up 9 city blocks. It's located in a great area and close to the Diamondbacks and Suns arenas. Restaurants and other stores are in walking distance. The place is simply massive but with friendly and hard working staff. read more

Well I have read a lot of Reviews pertaining to the lack of space and difficulty parking......hmmmm. Well the NFL is hosting its NFL Experience there during Superbowl week and I went today (January 24) on its opening day. Let me be real clear here......if the Convention Center was not top notch and didn't have plenty of space to accommodate thousands of people......believe me the League would not have selected this location. Now with that being said the parking issue is dead on from all the other reviews.....be prepared to pay 20- 30 bucks for various events going on at the convention center. All in all I would host a large event here with the confidence that it will go off without a hitch. Came here for first time for a 4 day Volleyball tournament, and it was a great experience. Parking is easy access to all sides, plenty of food choices in their food court, but pricey but good food. There's a Starbucks located right outside on Adams street. Attendants and info services are great when you get lost or ask for suggestions if your first time in area. The entire convention was clean and plenty of comfortable seats to lounge when you're not watching by courtside. Definitely did not feel like a maze compared to LA or Las Vegas. I would love to come back for any future sports tournament indeed!! read more

Not a great venue for conventions or trade shows. The north building is badly designed and is falling apart after only 15 years. The main ballroom is particularly troublesome since the loading dock is directly ABOVE it. During meetings you can hear and FEEL the semi trucks lumbering up the ramp overhead. This place is HUGE. so let's go over the good. Our convention used 2 expo halls and between 9 & 12 rooms a day. They rooms are expandable as well to accommodate our need for larger rooms. Example. Room 222 has and A B & C room. So you can expand room 222 to 222AB or 222A-C. The main expo hall is extreamly large, carpets in great shape, artistic ceiling and walls. Hallways are very wide and bright with great views and natural sunlight to accommodate huge masses of people moving around. Ground floor has, I think 6 small mall court style restaurants. The catered foods we had were about average for most conventions. But the absolute best thing about this convention center.... well that's easy. It's the AIR CONDITIONING. we hit 114 out side according to my phone weather app and the ac in this place never skipped a beat. It was nice and cool. Which was a super refreshing escape from the heat. I will say the chairs are not good. Convention chairs rarely are. But these felt and looked really cheap. And knowing the number of professionals who will be at conventions here. I would think they need more power plug locations and options. The security team is always walking around showing a presence and that's a big bonus for people's ease of mind. Two huge hotels are just out side the convention center. So finding a good place to stay is limited but I can tell you that both are a good choice. If your afraid of the heat I suggest the Hyatt as it's closer and you can reach the convention center with very little out side walking. The Sheraton is roughly 2 blocks away. So you will need to cross a street 3 times. Also this convention center is in a hugely artistic community so be prepared to see some really cool art and architecture. Especially at night. These normal looking buildings seem to come alive with design after the sun goes down. Lastly this location is at least 3 floors. I say at least because we used 3 floors for our convention but I do also remember seeing another escalator going down from the ground floor that we never used. Maybe that's for personnel or storage. No clue... but it's there. If your like me, I almost skipped this convention because I thought Phoenix would be dreadfully hot and boring. I have to admit I was wrong. The restaurants in this town are amazing and the convention center did not disappoint. So don't be afraid to give this place a shot or just drop by while your in the area and check out the location and views. Oh and the AIR CONDITIONING. Good luck and good eats read more

I've been to the Convention Center for both business and pleasure. The rooms can be chilly but are spacious and I haven't had any problems hearing the speakers. There is easy access to any restrooms, although some weren't fully stocked last time I attended an event here. There are multiple trash and recycle bins around the center to prevent littering, and there are a variety of restaurants as well as a locally owned coffee shop in the food court area. The one thing that I find a little weird at this particular convention center is that the exhibit halls are on the upper level which I'd imagine makes it harder for vendors to haul and set up their booths and supplies. Since parking can be hard to find and/or expensive in the downtown area there is easy access to the convention center using the light rail. For $4 you can get an all day pass and it will drop you off right at 3rd and Washington. Note that if you are traveling back from the convention center and are heading East the light rail stop will be one block south at Jefferson and 3rd St. read more

The family and I went to the annual Auto Show over Thanksgiving break. We attend the show most years to check out what's new and to see the fun supercars. The convention center is spacious and HUGE. Parking is fairly convenient. We usually have to walk about 10-12 minutes from parking to the convention center. We were all pleased with the food choices on the main floor. There was something for everyone. The convention center feels updated and is easy to traverse the concourses. We always enjoy our time at the Auto Show and at the Convention Center. read more

It's fun to attend the Small Business Expo once a year. It keeps me abreast of what is out there as far as outsources of business services, new technology and meet interesting people. Yelp was one of the vendors so you know! Sophie and Erica were running their Yelp booth with a fantastic energy and contagious smile. The event happened to be on Halloween day so there were candies out for grab on all the tables. If you didn't care for candies then there were free earphones, phone fan, pens, sports water bottles, phone stands and canvas bags galore. read more

I've been to a lot of convention centers. I do like that there is an underground portion of the building and also a skywalk. I just don't like that it's in downtown. I guess it can't be helped but parking is usually pricey and hard to find. As for the buildings, they are pretty spacious. There are a lot of space in the rooms and walkways. The problem is the escalators where the people would bottle up and cause a slow down. Other than that, decent convention center. read more

I think as with any convention center, there's good and bad aspects. I think the crappier aspect of Phoenix Convention Center is that the food and drinks area is very ... singular. The line for coffee in the morning can span for 20+ minutes and this is just to order, not necessarily when you get your drink. The food is ok, and pricey as with any convention area, but at least they do offer a good variety for purchase. This place is big ... but small. Everything is a little far apart and I guess this is more the way that each conference is setup but some things are quite confusing to get to and a far walk when you consider that there is only maybe 10 minutes between the sessions. I can't believe I've never reviewed this place before. I've been here countless times before, and watched the place get upgraded and remodeled several years ago. I can't remember the first time I came here, but it was some time ago after I moved out here. The convention center has an older part thats smaller, and a new addition that's huge! Plenty of events are held here all year round, from sporting events like the NBA all star game, to the auto show, they had an NRA convention a couple years ago with a zillion people, along with other regular yearly events like the auto show and several others. The place is large, and has 3 levels (a basement area, main level and upper level) with a crosswalk to get to the other side which is pretty darn cool. It's huge, spacious, and modern looking with its updates. Escalators, stairs, etc. The place is sparsely decorated with Arizona stuff that makes it really cool looking. They also have a cool light feature outside that illuminates the walkway with different colors at night and is really pretty to look at as well. The cool thing about it is too is that its easily accessible via light rail, and you don't have to spend $$ on parking...and let me tell you, the parking here isn't cheap! $12 for the garage, $10 in lots around, and its not any cheaper the farther away you get. I don't know why anyone would want to park down here, since the light rail is $3.50 round trip, so save yourself a few bucks and take the rail. You'll thank me later! There's also food and dining in here as well, with a variety of different style resturants, but again, its outrageously expensive! They have a starbucks here too, which is their regular prices, but is like an extra $5 a person to eat here, so dine elsewhere before you come in here. (minus the coffee since Starbucks is the only reasonably priced place in here.) Plus, the convention center is a hop, skip and a jump from about a zillion other cool dining places that your better off eating at anyways, so do that instead. Aside from that, this place is pretty huge, and its worth checking out. Plenty of clean pretty bathrooms and tons to do in and outside of the center with variety of different sized spaces to hold any kind of event, large or small. read more

I'm old enough to remember back when the Phoenix Convention Center was once the Phoenix Civic Plaza. Originally built in 1972, the Civic Plaza was originally a relatively small venue at just a meager 67,000 square feet. By 1985, the Civic Plaza grew to more than 300,000 square feet. But by the mid to late 90s, the Civic Plaza had lost its mojo. It was aging facility and was unable to draw some of the big events that so many cities now fight for (political conventions, championship sporting events, national trade shows, etc). In 2000, Phoenix voters approved a $600 million expansion, which resulted in the demolition of most of the old civic plaza to create an events center more than triple the size of the old one (almost a million square feet of total space). Two brand new multi story convention buildings were constructed (including a large underground ballroom) and Symphony Hall was also given a complete restoration and overhaul. By 2008, the newly renamed Phoenix Convention Center was completed. Since then, I've been to the Convention Center dozens of times for various events of all sizes. Today was the third large sporting event I've taken in at the Convention Center in the last 4 years. Three years ago, the Phoenix area hosted the Super Bowl and the NFL Experience took up the entire convention center. Two years ago, the College Football National Championship Fan Fest took over the convention center. And today, it was the NCAA Final Four Fan Fest. Each and every time, the Convention Center has handled the enormous throngs of sports fans with ease. There are elevators, escalators and stairs to move thousands upon thousands of people in and out of the convention hall and the convention hall itself is spacious enough to hold just about any big event you can conjure up. I've always had an easy time getting answers to my questions from the ushers, security lines have always moved smoothly and bathroom facilities and exits are easily identifiable. In addition to the vast improvements to the look and feel of the facility itself, the food offerings have also greatly improved at the Convention Center food court. I can distinctly remember being physically ill eating some of the food they used to serve at the old Civic Plaza, and the variety of offerings in the old building was pretty much limited to burgers, hot dogs, pizza, and something masquerading as Mexican food. You can still find these in the new Metro Marche food court and various stations throughtout Convention Center (albeit of much better quality than in the past) and you can also get Chinese, various sandwich spots, vegetarian and vegan friendly offerings, as well as breakfast and snack options. And no, we're not talking 5 star Yelp restaurant quality, but still perfectly respectable for a place that has to crank out tens of thousands of convention center goers a day. Aside from special events, the Convention Center also hosts big annual events as well. The biggest of course being Comicon, which draws upwards of 100,000 convention goers in a single weekend. You'll also see big crowds and lots of space taken up for wedding conventions, trade show conventions, international auto shows, and even graduation ceremonies. The Convention Center has also made overtures to both the Democratic and Republican National Committees in the hopes of luring one (or both) party's national convention in the future (an event that would also take up the entire convention center and then some). The Phoenix Convention Center has been a workhorse for almost a half century in Downtown and shows no signs of slowing down. With the recent expansion, its seems there's no convention or big event the center can't handle. And despite the heavy workload, the workers keep the convention center looking clean and in like new condition every time I visit. A vital part of the Phoenix economy that has grown up right alongside the booming Downtown sector. Great Facility + Great Events = Great Times. read more

NFL Experience ... what a great event Recently, I spent a great amount of time at the Phoenix Convention Center while attending the The NFL Experience. I have to give credit to the City of Phoenix and all their participating downtown partners for making the NFL Experience such an amazing event. Literally, downtown Phoenix was transformed into a pro football's interactive theme park. Inside the convention center were games for adults and children, displays, membrellium, youth football clinics, and free autograph sessions with current and former NFL players. Outside the convention center was equally entertaining with, concerts, food vendors, rock climbing wall, and nightly fireworks displays. I had never spent a lot of time at the Phoenix Convention Center and failed to realize all that the convention center has to offer. The center is in walking distance of major hotels, shopping, major sports events. Thetheatre venues, even have their own dedicated stop on the Metro Light Rail line, it doesn't get much beer then that. If your in the area of the convention center you should stop by and spend some time. read more

So, here's the rub: I love supporting businesses, especially when it comes to bringing money into Downtown Phoenix, but I think we deserve something better than so-so; Phoenix deserves a more modern Convention Center, something with more flash and pizazz; something in the 21st century. BACKGROUND Conceptualized towards the end of the 1950s, the Phoenix Convention Center was designed to provide a place for business, networking, trade shows, entertainment, and community gathering, bringing the city closer together while offering cultural and theatrical opportunities to performers and students at the time. Owned by the City of Phoenix, constant updates are made to the convention center to try and give it a "wow" factor that has been lacking since its inception. Forming a citizens group in the 1960s to study the development of a convention center for the Phoenix Civic Plaza, by 1963, the nonprofit was founded to fund the construction. Six years later, a legal agreement was signed for the construction of the convention center. In 1972, the convention center was completed in the same year the construction started, costing $28 million in total. However, by the mid-80s, groups were demanding an expansion to accommodate bigger organizations; so the nonprofit agreed to double its available space. Come the mid 1990s, the Phoenix Convention Center created a $32 million renovation project to keep the facility popular and nationally regarded for trade show businesses. Recently, the Phoenix Convention Center has nearly tripled in size since its first unveil, with a multi-phased $600 million project starting in 2006, using Populous as the design architect and Leo A. Daly as the prime architect. Populous stayed on for Phase II of the project, completing in 2008. Today, the Phoenix Convention Center, located in the heart of Downtown Phoenix, is a 24-acre facility that has long been regarded as a national and regional convention masterpiece, hosting a variety of trade shows as well as consumer events. Following the facility update, the convention center is designed to mimic Arizona's landscape, with steel canopies extending over Third Street to create shade for those passing by. Within the atrium located in the West Building, a large stone and glass room is designed to highlight the angles and light of the Grand Canyon. Lastly, warm hues are evident throughout, paying homage to the Sonoran Desert and arid natural environment that surrounds the city of Phoenix. Types of events commonly hosted at the facility include: American Alliance of Museums 2018 Annual Meeting & Museum Exposition, AMA Phoenix Education Conference & Tradeshow, the Phoenix Symphony, American Helicopter Society Meeting, Orpheum Theatre Free Public Tour, Phoenix Comic Fest 2018, and the bi-annual Arizona Ultimate Women's Expo, which me and my friends have been attending since 2008. Although the Phoenix Convention Center is decent, it's boring and outdated. It's not a place I look forward to spending time in, in fact, whenever my friends suggest an event at the Phoenix Convention Center, I look for other options first. The esthetic is dull, with a completely uninteresting entry, a carpet pattern that looks like Goodwill leftovers from the 1980's, and zero accent lighting features. And usually, I noticed, it always attracts the exact crowd you'd expect, and big money goes elsewhere. Being at the Phoenix Convention Center usually leaves me wishing for more. The staff has always been polite, but like Post Office worker polite. There's no enthusiasm in anyone there, it's like everyone wishes they were somewhere else; I know I usually am. CONCLUSION The Phoenix Convention Center seems to be doing the minimum, and is far from competing with other convention centers in the country. I attended the NIGA Tradeshow that was held in the Phoenix Convention Center. This is probably one of the nicer convention centers I've been to. I had a nice view of the convention center from my hotel room (Hilton), so that was nice. The first thing you will see upon entry is a huge vanity-type-mirror artwork. When you look into the mirror, you will see the message in the reflection "Art is a guaranty of sanity." This is a piece by Louise Bourgeois that is on display, which makes you kind of appreciate the place a little more. How does one go about reviewing a conference center? Let's face it - conferences, in general, suck the big one. Unless you're going to a candy convention or something, you're going to spend many hours in the company of polo shirted, Dockers sporting guys who are REALLY excited to tell you about their new innovations in....whatever. PCC tempers the misery somewhat with decent catering, clean and well stocked restrooms and plenty of comfy lounge chairs so you can sack out and check email. There isn't free wifi as a rule but there is decent cell reception, even inside the cavernous exhibit hall. Other pluses : lots of good hotels nearby (stay @ the Palomar), close to public transport, reasonably close to the airport and several bars/restaurants nearby. Cons: it's huge and can be confusing to navigate and the area can be eerily dead, especially at night. read more

This place is tremendous. Like.....size-wise....it's HUGE! Considering how large it is, I'm impressed at how well it runs. Security was great (they were friendly and nice, too!) and the facilities were immaculate. Even the rest rooms were top notch (and there are a lot of them to choose from). They were (almost) always clean (can't blame the cleaning crew for people that are just gross and forget to flush or make a stinkin' mess in the restrooms..). Faucets and soap actually worked...can you tell that I'm impressed with the bathrooms? The air conditioning worked great - they froze me out of a few sessions (which I prefer; I can't stand being too hot in meetings) and the food was actually quite good. It's not easy cooking for 1,000 people! They did a really good job with keeping the food fresh and bringing pretty high quality stuff to the masses of hungry and sometimes grumpy folks. Just doesn't scream exciting to me. I do like how there is a subtle vibe of Phoenix with touches like the small sand sculpture display inside by the entrance. Also wish there were more to do in the immediate vicinity. The North halls form a weird L-shape... so when all used together, provides a lot of space for a big show, but not so good for exhibitors when it comes to foot traffic. I will say though that for once I was so glad that the A/C was blasting inside the convention center. read more

I've been to several events/conferences at the Phoenix Convention Center. The facility is nice and modern with spacious pre-function areas and a nice selection of food options. There's a Crust Pizza that serves up Pastas and Pizza for quick eats. The directional signage is not very good. It takes me a couple of days to get oriented when attending a large conference here. Overall, the experience is pretty average for a convention center. Visited today for the NFL Experience. The North building is large , clean and well lit. I agree with parking but you have to drive around and scout out price differences. The norm is the closer to the venue the more pricey. We like the garage at Chase Field and two blocks west it was priced half what we paid The food is standard fare. Ok not great. More selection would be great. NFL Experience: We were on the fence about this one. Sorry but the MLB All Star Game was superb and this one wasn't close. Wish there was more for families and older adults to do besides spend money. Over all I would go back to an event at the Phoenix Convention Center. read more

Good overall I'm torn about our convention center here in Phoenix. Lots of positives and negatives, frankly. Pros: Wide open and soaring spaces; Upstairs areas have good views of the city; A/C keeps you uber cool; A few good restaurants in reasonable walking distance (during cooler seasons); Relatively nice staff; Pretty nice architecture Cons: Inside eateries are expensive for middling-quality food; Parking can be fairly expensive, especially if you are there for a multi-day event; Parking can be far, which means sweating through your attire in hotter seasons; Downtown Phoenix is mid-way through developing a nice downtown atmosphere and lacks nice areas to relax or draw your interest; Odd spread of convention facilities means finding the north versus south buildings BEFORE you park, so you don't have a long hike Once downtown develops draws that keep families and young professionals in downtown, there will be more to make the Convention Center's setting more appealing. Then just solve the parking trek + cost issue and this place is exceptional read more

One of downtowns biggest gems. The skinny I travel at least 2-3 times a year for different events car shows, comic con etc... This place is great for all of these events. The a/c is always at a perfect temperature and I can't say enough about the beautiful architecture that alone deserves a visit. The bad While the food selection is great it is not cheap and charge ball park prices (4-5$ bottles of water) which makes me just bring my own stuff. The security guards seem to have a funny attitude towards me sometimes maybe it's cause I look intimidating with my smiles and how are you's but they (not all of them but most) don't answer and just check my credentials. I don't let them get me down but a simple hello from another human being is usually real nice. This place is HUGE. I was here for Wrestlemania Fan Axxess and it was on the bottom level, which requires you going down 2 separate escalators just to get to. The entire complex is shiny and huge and amazing. Of course, it's $3 for a bottle of water but they know they're gonna get you when once you're in, you can't leave again, and you know you're gonna be thirsty after walking around for 4 hours or so. read more

Came for the Phoenix comicon. The line was ridiculous. It wrapped around the entire building, but at least it did go pretty fast. The place was crowded and very hectic. The kids had a ball, except for the waiting in line part. Other than the long line in the hot Arizona sun, this was a good family outing, we are split on whether we will do this again next year, but I am sure when the time comes, we will all do it again. read more

GORGEOUS and GLAMOROUS! The perfect place for your small-to-moderate sized conference. Three buildings, all conveniently located near hotels/entertainment/the airport. This review focuses primarily on the North building. Hallways are filled with natural light, vivacious patterns, and earth tones. Sculpture installations are featured around the property - make sure you catch the desert sand people upon entering the North Building, then make your way around to the blown glass tribesmen near 124B! The information desk is centrally located (though, not constantly man-ed), and there are several dine-and-dash options for attendees (mexican, pizza, bistro, coffee - they've got your covered). For an administration/staff lunch room, breakfast and lunch options can be confirmed as delicious. Breakfast: fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon, oatmeal, cereals. Lunches: salad options, taco bar, sauteed veggies, tiny tart dessert. Coffee/tea/soda are available throughout the day. An unavoidable "con" to this convention center: the building QUAKES when large vehicles/the tram passes by. A bit jarring, and unsettling (especially for those of us who have vertigo issues), but certainly not a constant variable, nor one which may be remedied (just take a breath - you'll be fine!). read more

Phoenix Convention Center hosted our conference for a week. Plenty of room to walk around and get from one room to the next, beautiful full-length balconies overlooking the city. But, the best part I'd have to say is the food. For the student lunch, it was a boxed lunch consisting of the "South Beach" turkey (onion lettuce and tomato on a pretzel), a balsamic vinaigrette spinach parmesan salad, a green apple, a chocolate chip cookie, and bottled water. There were several other options to choose from, including vegetarian. During breaks, they offered coffee and assorted mini tacos and churro trays, and soft pretzels. They really outdid themselves with that one. Our dinner banquet on the last consisted of iced tea, a butter bean roasted tomato dressing salad (similar to the "taste of tuscany" on the catering dinner menu), rolls, roast chicken, smashed rosemary potato with sautéed squash and roast tomatoes, and an orange sponge-like ricotta cheesecake with a candied orange garnish with whipped cream and marbled chocolate shavings. The cake and its orange drizzle was good, but not everyone was a fan of the strong orange flavor or the extra vegetables that came with the meal.
