Phoenix Coffee is a hipster coffee shop in Cedar Lee district of Cleveland Heights. The coffee shop is in a plaza with entrances in the front and the back. There's convenient parking behind the building. Very laid back atmosphere is the best way to describe this cafe. Cafe is pretty spacious with many table options. It is never crowded, so it's perfect for a caffeine fix and work from the cafe. Coffee choices are pretty typical with cold brew, drip coffee, some lattes, and a case of small bites (with a scone being my personal favorite). Baristas are always quick, friendly, and recommend options. Walls inside the cafe are adorned with local art, some very cool pop art pieces. There's also an entire shelf of plants and pots you can buy. They even label the plants indicating which ones are pet-friendly! This place also should be your go-to for cool events around town. I will say that I was driving by this place and recognized the name. I have been to a different Phoenix coffee shop before. So of course I had to stop in. And I wasn't disappointed. The staff was in a great mood and very helpful when I walked in. I ordered a mocha hit drink. And it tasted amazing. It was not super sugary. And wasn't bland at all. Great independent coffee shop - we stopped here because the bagel place down the street doesn't make espresso-based beverages on Sundays. Everyone was super friendly and efficient. UPDATED REVIEW -- I'm not sure why I gave my below review 4-stars because I remember feeling super uncomfortable when I first visited in December 2018 because the space is tight. So, when I arrived, it was filled with people. Thus, I felt claustrophobic. I was finally able to get a sofa to myself. PRICES -- The prices are expensive here with a small cup of tea costing over $2. I can buy a whole box of tea for $2 or $3. The service and atmosphere here are a 10/10. My bagel was delicious. The only reason I am giving it a 3 star rating is because their campfire chai tea latte was NOT GOOD AT ALL. It had the aroma of an actual campfire almost reminiscent of smoked jerky or bacon bits. It was much too overpowering and did not taste like a chai tea latte at all. I would love to give their coffee or fall chai a try next time maybe but a little disappointed with my drink as I try to limit my coffee intake and needed the caffeine boost but I had to throw it away. read more

This is my favorite coffee place in Cleveland hands down! Their coffee is excellent and we love trying all of the drip coffees they have throughout the week. I really enjoy their lattes and cappuccinos, but the drink that stands out the most to me is their Chai Tea Latte. All other chai tea lattes are compared to this one. It isn't too sweet (a pet peeve of mine) and is a great combination of creamy and spicey. They also have some great food options including House made muffins as well as bagels from Cleveland Bagel Company. They also have a lot of vegan and gluten free options! I love a good Phoenix. Truly, Phoenix Coffee is *the* coffee shop I think of when I think of Cleveland. Great vibes. Cool people. Fun local art. Tasty coffee. Sadly, I feel like we live in a world where the concept of a communal coffee shop to work, play and create is becoming slowly extinct. For me, Phoenix Coffee is keeping that vibe alive in Cleveland. This location in particular is always packed, so be prepared to not be picky on seating. Phoenix is a cool place that typically houses students, artists, musicians and local customers all scattered amongst their mismatched seating. Also, in the winter, the windows get steamy and it's hard to see inside from the exterior-- so be sure you had the address handy! You may miss it. But of all the Phoenix locations in the Cleveland area, this is by far my favorite one. While the coffee menu is small, they make a darn good, low-sugar mocha. Your fancy coffee drinking friends will also surely love the selection. You can even buy bags of their coffee on your way out the door. And yes, this is Cleveland Heights, so be prepared for frustrating parking. Luckily, this location is pretty nicely placed considering the circumstances. I've been a patron of Phoenix coffee ever since I was a freshman in high school (2009). Over the years throughout leaving Cleveland for college and moving back to Cleveland, I've always make time to visit Phoenix to grab a cup of coffee whenever I'm in town. During the times of I've visited from 2009-2016 the coffee was one of the best coffees I've ever had. I loved everything about what they did. I've visited their other stores such as Coventry and downtown locations, which both still tasted great. The inside of each location is very relaxing where people go to read, study, and meet up. I know they have local artist hang their artwork to sell, they have local bands sometimes to play music. And now to the recent years (2016-present), I visited them during those times and notice that their coffee was a little different tasting. It had a strange after taste, so I asked the employees what happen to the coffee? They said Phoenix are locally roasting the beans now and getting healthier ingredients for their coffees. The strange after taste made me not wanting to visit Phoenix more than usual, i now live in Cleveland and most likely visit Phoenix (any location) only once or twice a year now. Compared to going at least six times a month during 2009 thru 2016. Thru all the history I had with Phoenix coffee, I have to give them a 4. I would've given them a 3 star rating, but It could be my stubbornness of not liking the new tasting coffee that's locally roasted and that's not a fair rating. There's still great things Phoenix have done that hasn't change. They still have local artwork hanging throughout their store, I'm not sure if there is still local bands that come through and play anymore. And there's still many customers there enjoying their coffee/pastry while studying/reading/hanging out with some friends. So give this place a try, maybe you would like the coffee a lot more than I do. read more

A cute place!! Street parking is relatively easy, but if you can't find any there's a lot nearby. The baristas are so so nice and the drinks I've gotten are amazing. I'm a sucker for seasonal drinks so I've tried the fall latte and the golden chai latte. This location is a lot better than the one on Coventry! It's more spacious and quiet, and they have a larger selection of snack bites to accompany your coffee/tea. There is a metered parking lot in the back, but if you're a poor graduate student like myself, there's ample street parking in the nearby neighborhoods! There's also a rewards program now. If you consistently use the same credit card to pay for your drinks, your 10th drink will be free! Unfortunately, it doesn't transfer between different phoenixes (ie, if you bought 9 drinks at the Coventry location, you can only claim your free 10th drink at that location). read more

Phoenix has managed to replicate the charm of the neighborhood cafe and reproduce it time and time again, each with a little different flair. I ventured outside my usual 1-mile radius bubble to this location for a change of scenery, and found myself leaving three hours later after contentedly nibbling on a Better Breakfast Muffin (which has restored my faith in bran products) and sipping on a Soy Chai Latte while cranking out a solid afternoon's work. The staff are super friendly as usual, and this location is much-loved by locals. What's unique about this location is the little patio in the back, where people study and kids romp around before coming back in to sip some Hot Chocolate, then scamper back outside. The staff seemed to know the regular customers, and were even playing with some of them during breaks! My ideal workspace is usually not a communal table because I always get self-conscious about whether I'm shaking the table or taking up too much space, but the crowd was just sparse enough to let me spread out my laptop, backpack, notebook, and colored pens on the large, high table in the center without bothering anyone. Not being able to lean too far back on my stool probably helped me not fall asleep too. The two-seater tables next to the glass-wall in front are perfect for staring into the streets on a rainy day, and the couches are great for nursing a cup of tea and a long chat. This location is a little less cozy than some of the others I've been to since the seating seems to be more dispersed and the decor is uniformly white, but the usual easygoing Phoenix vibe still prevails. The particular day I went, Phoenix was also setting up for Heights Music Hop so there was the constant bustle of volunteers rearranging furniture and setting up for the performers. They were respectful in general of the space, and even the cafe patrons they apologetically displaced responded kindly. Decent Wi-Fi (just don't try to stream a movie), and solid drinks (albeit a little heavy-handed with the milk). Looking forward to another round of studying soon! read more

Their coffee is consistently delicious across all of their stores. The selection of teas is amazing. They have an entire menu of just teas. Mind boggling really. As a student, I really value having a good coffee shop to go to. The atmosphere in Phoenix is perfect for a snowy day study session. It's warm, there's free internet, and the coffee and snacks are really really delicious. Something special about this location is that they also have ice cream!! If you're not down to wander just across the street to Sweetie Fry, a small scoop here should keep you happy. One of my favorite things also is how clean the bathrooms are. Public bathrooms are usually nightmares. There's always someone who doesn't know how to use a bathroom. Weird, but true. Phoenix keeps theirs very clean and nice. No need to fear here! read more

It is clearly an older Phoenix than the brand spankin new one that's on Coventry, but it's much more spacious. I often feel like I'm sitting right on top of the person next to me, and like there's no personal space at Coventry, but there's a lot more room here. They also have more baked goods than at the Coventry location, although I've never had anything to eat from either location... so can't speak towards the quality. There's a parking lot behind, and there's usually street parking on the near-by neighborhood streets. ----------------------------------- Explanation of my rating system - 5*: Epitome of something, the best I've had, would LOVE to go back 4*: Great food and happy to go back regularly, but not the best of the category 3*: Food is fine. I may spontaneously decide to go there based on convenience. But no need to go back either. 2*: If you insist, I guess I'll come along. I'll find something to eat. I think I speak for most Clevelanders when I say we're proud of our Phoenix Coffee. It's a staple, and was a go-to hangout spot throughout my high school years. Now 5 years out of high school, it's still a place I go to meet up with friends or to just sit and get some work done. The space is pretty big, but manages to still feel cozy, although it can be crowded. There's wifi and comfy seats, and outdoor seating when it's nice out. The staff is always very friendly. One of my favorite parts of the space itself is the bathrooms! The walls inside the bathrooms have giant chalkboards, with chalk for all the visitors to add whatever they want. The drinks themselves are good. As for coffee, I've only ever gotten plain coffee, but the lattes sound good and there's A LATTE different flavors. Get it? Get it? But yeah, gingerbread and other delicious sounding things. Despite being Phoenix Coffee, I've actually more often gotten tea. I really like Shane's Lucky Licorice tea- it's so sweet without even adding any sugar! read more
