As Pho places go, it is rather bland but filling, but as many others have noted, it is Modesto...and you cannot be too picky. If you are picky the nearest really excellent Pho can be had on/off Story Road in San Jose...where there seems to be a "million" Vietnamese places....where you can train on the "art" of Pho making & tasting skills. Anyway, back to this place. Their Pho is big, has ample noodles, fresh throw in veges, and meats. Unfortunately, the beef consistently has the texture of shoe leather and the broth is just OK. The price is about right for the quantity. Spring rolls are greasy but edible. The decor is downright ugly, people can be strange, the TV can be annoying, and the wait can feel like forever when you have to go back to work. There are ways to enhance your Pho. First, throw in the raw beef (if any), then the Basil & some veges (leave the bean sprouts till later), Second, add a few drops of the very Stinky Fish sauce as tolerated (DO NOT get this on you...it basically raw rotten fermented anchovy juice...and you will therefore Stink like rotten fish) which is a "secret" ingredient in Thai, Lao, Vietnamese, and other dishes. Add a squeeze of Plum sauce & hot garlic sauce to taste. Mix carefully from bottom to top. Thirdly, throw in the bean sprouts and squeeze in some lime. Alter to taste...and enjoy! Despite the lack of decor, quality, forever lunchtime wait, & the curt service, it can become so packed that there is a wait! Don't wait...go across the street to the decent "all you can eat" Indian Place or anywhere else. This Asian place, like some others, are on the "seedy" side of town, so beware & be careful. Lots of car thefts & assaults on the Westside of Modesto. There are now a grand total of three other Pho places in Modesto. The one on Carver is greasy and none too clean nor safe. The one on McHenry is overrated with a strange taste...too sweet with perhaps MSG? The new one on H st, in downtown Modesto, is probably the best all around Vietnamese place right now, and both their Pho and sandwiches are fairly good & tasty. read more

Decided to give this place a try and ordered take out from here. My first impression was that they hold out on the fixings for the pho. I got a bunch of old veggies and not that much chicken, but I went ahead and put it together and ate it anyway. My husband got broccoli chicken, but they gave him broccoli beef instead, so he decided to eat that anyway. His plate was mostly filled with broccoli, the beef was tough and mostly nerve, then he found a hair in it. Definitely, not coming back. It was a first and a last for us. Hands down our #1 pho restaurant! We come from turlock AT LEAST once a week. My go-to is #1 beef combo or #17 chicken with quail eggs. The broth for both beef and chicken are perfect in flavor and richness. Most pho places around here taste sweet but at Pho Viet, it's so authentic. If you're looking for pho, it's a must here. I've also had their garlic chicken, banh mi, egg rolls, spring rolls, beef stew... There's probably more that I'm forgetting but literally everything has been good. No disappointments here! They accept credit cards but charge a $.50 service fee. It's not a big deal bc their prices for everything is pretty cheap compared to other pho places. The servers are all very sweet and hardworking. They get packed during peak times so be prepared! It's definitely worth it though!! read more

Came yesterday to eat w my family and none of us enjoyed our food. Bf & I got the for 3 dinner, and only liked the rice & sweet & sour chicken. Everything tasted like garlic. Literally, everything. The broccoli had some spicy seasoning on it, idk why? My kid burned his mouth from it. The meat was chewy. Food was just thrash. My dad ordered a meat pho soup and he didn't wanna stop only cus he had to pay anyway. The boba drinks are ok, not great. Supper powdery. Oh. and apparently the right side of the restaurant is the cool side, the left side by where you pay has no ac. Lmao, only cus my mom complained about the heat the girl moved us and we were all in shock of how much of the difference was. My mom got a vegetable pho soup, it seemed ok. She enjoyed it. When I'm in Modesto I don't get too excited for my food options. Short of the Guy Fieri food truck, I usually just skip lunch when I'm in town. This time I decided to take a leap of faith and try Pho Viet which I saw as I was driving by. No research, no thought process. It's a decently spacious restaurant in an otherwise boring shopping mall. I got their banh mi ($3.50!!!!!) to go and it took about 10 min. I got to say, it was pretty good. Lots of freshly cooked pork and it was a decent size as well. I wish it had more veggies and cilantro (it's usually the other way around) but all in all I can't complain for the price. Tasted great. Will definitely return and try more dishes. read more

It's hard to find great Pho! Yesterday was my first time eating there. As soon as I walked in I was given a friendly greeting and even though they were pretty busy for 3 PM, someone came by straight away to take my order. The soup came out promptly, and as soon as I took my first bite I was hooked!!! I live in Merced, and will definitely make Pho Viet a stop when I have to go to Modesto, and may even take the drive if I need a Pho fix. I've been a regular to this place because I believe their Pho is good, but today they pissed me off. First, I understand that it was busy but not so much as the fact that it was too hectic, I did have to wait for a table to clear, and since my time is brief, since I'm on lunch break I jumped on a table that was cleared (not wiped btw) and waited to be served. The waitress did promptly take my order - Usually I get egg or spring rolls followed by their popular pho - I believe it's was number 1 on their menu. Well, two guys appeared and seemed to sit quickly after their table was WIPED clean off, and their orders were made simultaneously. Maybe it had to do with the fact they were wearing suits... who knows. Then, a family of three appeared and by the time it was cleared they sat down right away and then were also placed their order quickly. So my egg rolls came first. I have to admit the rolls are awesome - I was starving since I didn't eat breakfast this morning, and sacrificed my tongue to the burn gods... anyways, so here come two bowls of pho.. they went right to the suits table first.. I was thinking to myself "I'm starving here, what the hell?" Then I sit there and read all my spam emails on my phone. Five minutes later, two more bowls to the family that arrived.. I then looked at the waiter and gave him a nasty look.. He then noticed when I was nodding my head in disbelief that my order did not come through... and maybe a few minutes after that came my soup... ahhh... so I thought.. This is the worse part, I start eating my soup, then I notice a black string.. it was a long piece of hair! I was starting to get upset now as I just started to eat my soup, which I dressed it up with the lemon, basil, and bean sprouts and sauces. I took only two sips when I found this nasty hair- and my lunch hour was almost over. I waved to the waitress to get a replacement bowl - That's when I went ballistic. because of the way they were to themselves and didn't think I was a priority, 10 more minutes go by. I have to be at work in less than 5 minutes. I stormed out to the cashier, and paid just for the egg rolls. They were apologetic afterwards, but it was too late; they lost a regular customer. NOTE: Treat your regulars with respect, or they will never come back. I won't be coming back! read more

I have to be honest, I would not come here again. 1) Sanitation - lots of Pho places that I've been to have their plastic chopsticks and plastic spoons already on the table inside of the utensil organizer. I'm used to it, but what I'm not used to is how it seems like the chopsticks and spoons inside of the utensil organizer at this restaurant had so much dust on it. It is routine for people to wipe the utensils prior to usage with a napkin. Rarely do I ever encounter utensils that have so much dust on it. I also sat next to the window, and there were dead flies on the window. I'm not even talking about the flies that just turned over and died, I'm talking about the dead flies that were swatted with force. Can you imagine sitting next to such a thing prior to eating? 2) Bun bo hue - I ordered the bun bo hue here. I asked the waitress (seemed to be the only waitress there) about some "Mam tom" or "Sate" to add flavor to the bun bo hue. The waitress said that they didn't have any. This is a first for me because ALL Vietnamese Pho places that serve Bun bo hue will always have Mam tom or Sate for your bun bo hue. Otherwise, HOW ELSE WOULD YOU MAKE THE BUN BO HUE?! Interesting indeed... My noodles were undercooked. I don't know how you mess up on noodles, at a pho place. read more

For those that have lived in Modesto. You know there's not many restaurants to choose from, especially when you're craving Asian food. The 4 stars are for: -Modesto's standard of pho, since there are only 3 Vietnamese restaurants around. It is the best one. Imo. -The food is pretty consistent.. though they have their bad days. -It is also the cheapest one. where else can you get a #1 for $5-6, in Modesto that is. -The service is how you would expect.. this isn't fine dining guys. for those that don't know. you pay at the register. & the people are friendly. Probably cuz we use to go there like every week. Can't go wrong with the #1 & the seafood noodle soup. The portions aren't huge but I'm a small eater. no complaints there. The rice plates are good. Grill pork, pork chops, & lemon grass chicken. They also have a Chinese menu. but who goes to a Vietnamese restaurant for Chinese food. read more

This place really isn't much to look at. It is located in a really sketchy looking strip mall and they don't appear to have done anything at all to update the look of the place in years. Despite this, the pho is great! Since arriving in this area from the bay area my wife and I have lamented the loss of good pho. We are now regulars at this place and highly recommend the pho. The other menu items vary from good to just okay, but the pho is always delicious. I would've given this place 4 stars last year because they inconveniently only accepted cash, BUT they now accept credit cards/debit so I am upping the review to 5 stars. read more

So I haven't been here in a long time so decided to try it out. I got the #2 and Egg Rolls. The broth with the Pho was flavorful but not a lot like other Pho shops I've been to but not a big deal. I also had egg rolls that were nice and fresh and crispy. They give you enough dipping sauce which is good. The customer service was good for it not being too busy since it was still early in the day. Last time I went here, the bowl was a bit bigger I think and it was filled with broth and the necessary ingredients. Overall, it wasn't bad for my first time going back to this place.
