Few minutes later my roll was on the table; suspect they heated up the chicken in the microwave because it had a rubbery texture. There was only two other customers in the store and their food was already on their tables. Ordered beef pho and was disappointed. The soup was watery, tasted like it had flavor enhancers, and the bean sprouts were brown (not fresh). End of the table condiments and utensils did not look clean. Food is great, I would say one of the best phos Ive had so far. But the service has been quite a bit of a downhill. The young man gave us an attitude quite a few several times, and whenever the restaurant gets busy, he shows his frustration on his face. Do not absolutely think professional. I've been here twice now and their pho is one of my favorites in the area! I always get a large/xl special pho when I'm having pho cravings. They serve a great quantity and the broth is delicious and not overly seasoned. The noodles are the perfect texture and the meats taste fresh and delicious. We also tried their spring rolls which were also very yummy. The only thing that has been disappointing is bubble tea, which the server didn't know how to make and asked me how it's supposed to be. WHERE IS THE JACKFRUIT? I ordered jackfruit bubble tea this afternoon an hour before my fasting ends. I took it home and took a sip and it tasted like powdered milk on crushed ice. I called to speak to the owner but not avail. I told the woman that did she just put one jackfruit in there because you could not even taste a jackfruit. All she could say is "SORRY". The protocols are a little confusing (e.g. do you wait to be seated, do you order at the window or do they come to your table, do you pay at the counter or at the table?), and the atmosphere won't be for everyone but the food was excellent. Get the won ton noodle soup. I can't think of another place in the greater Hartford area that serves it. Coming from the San Gabriel Valley area of Los Angeles where there are dozens of places that serve it, this version is just as good or better. I like to get the soup on the side, put some hoisin (the black sauce) into the dry noodles/meats, mix it up and enjoy while taking some slurps from the side of soup. My first time here. I came to check it out based on the reviews. To drink, I ordered mango tea and the response to that was "we're too busy to make that right now. We have coke if you want." Upon checking out, I told the person that said that to that he could have said the drink was not available and not said they were too busy. He didn't care. That's why places like Pho Van exists. The prices are average compared to other pho places in neighboring towns - that's still a good thing. The food was amazing!!! The Bahn Mi sandwich initially surprised me when it came to the table because it wasn't put together yet. Once you put it together and take the first bite...mouth watering good! The pho broth tasted authentic. The inside is pretty basic. A few booths and nice music. I can't wait for warmer weather to see if they will have outside seating because the view is beautiful overlooking a pond/lake. The waiter came up to me with a glass of water right away and I looked at the menu . Reasonably priced nothing too crazy . So I ordered the bun thit Tom nuong cha gio . Which is basically grilled shrimp with sliced pork and egg rolls over vermicelli. Everything is cooked and made to order hot and fresh . A group of four (4) had the following: Appetizers: fried egg rolls, summer rolls (shrimp), fried wontons (all excellent) Main meal: Pho beef soup, grilled shrimp vermicelli, and pork banh mi sandwich (all excellent) (4) stars because of the food. Would have been (5) stars if not for the slow service. But to their defense, we went in on a Saturday at around 1pm and it appeared that we caught their lunch rush for the day. 1 hostess running around frantically trying to seat people, take orders, deliver meals made the process of getting quality service torturous. Add to this the two elderly cooks in the kitchen made it impossible to get quicker service even tho they were moving as quickly as they could. I contemplated removing a star because a bigger group (about 8-10 people) who arrived and were seated after us, had their orders taken after us, but received their appetizers and main meals before us. This larger group ethnicity matched that of the restaurant and our group did not. Don't let the outside appearance fool you. This little hole in the wall restaurant is incredible. The owner's, husband and wife, serve authentic Vietnamese cuisine. They alternate cooking but, the husband is the one who comes out to get everyone's order. He first finds out what your taste preferences are, then asks about levels of spice (heat) you like, then has the food cooked accordingly. He will make suggestions if you are unsure of what to order. We have pho places that are much closer to us (this place is about 20 miles away) but we choose to drive to Pho Van. The broth of their soup has so much flavor in it that is unmatched by any place close to us. They also have a pretty big menu with lots of great options, which is also different from many other Vietnamese restaurants. Service was TERRIBLE! Went in a bit after noon and ordered Banh Xeo (Vietnamese pancake). It too OVER AN HOUR to get it for take out. Their comment was "Chinese is everything 10 minutes. Vietnamese takes time". Well we've had Vietnamese in many, many locations and it has never taken an hour! And this was lunch hour! Good thing there were no early afternoon meetings!
