We randomly came to Pho Saigon after driving for three weary hours the rain storm. We're craving Vietnamese food and we are thankful that fate guided us here. The food was absolutely amazing, fresh, authentic, affordable. They even had Vietnamese music videos playing in the background, which was awesome. Their Vietnamese coffee was very strong and exactly what I needed. Their Pho broth was very beefy, but in the best way possible. It wasn't too salty, and the portions were huge. It's rare that I have the bowl of noodles and not feel bloat from sodium. On our way back from Maine, we will stop by for sure. read more

I came here for a birthday lunch cause I wanted some comfort food. Asian food is my comfort food especially Vietnamese food. I heard about the place and wanted to try it. It is close to the Asian supermarket Adong and I never noticed it. I came in about 2 in afternoon on a Monday. It looks like I just came by after the lunch rush as there were many bowls on the tables. I was greeted by a nice older lady and was sat down. It looks like it was run by a mom and pop shop. Inside there were plenty of tables. Most of which hold a party of 4. The older gentleman took my order. I got a grill pork rice dish, summer rolls and a pork banh mi to go. The food came out pretty fast and it was delicious and flavorful. I was fairly surprised that the utensil was on the table near the spice rack. Most restaurants did away with that after covid. It's a small place, Stone throw away from Pho Boston. I was there a few years ago and I don't remember anything special except I guess I didn't go back, so that's says something. How are at this time, My experience was generally positive. The decor is very simple. The owners are not very proficient in English but they have staff that are. The restaurant is clean, and I like the fact that every table has a selection of Asian condiments available without asking. I ordered the Pho with rare beef and flank steak. Actually, it was referred to as well done flank steak. There was not any char to the flank though and in fact it was rather fatty. I ended up pulling the pieces out of my soup and pulling the flank fat off, returning the more lean cuts to the bowl. I ordered the small because I had another entree coming, but there was a lot of vermicelli in it and not quite enough broth for my tastes. My second dish was much better. It was two grilled pork chops on top of a bed of rice. They were very delicious. I do like the restaurant and would go back for the pork chops. I'll tend to be kinder here, because the Vietnamese community should be! That being said I chose this spot because I thought the prices would be a bit lower than their nearby and superior competition, Pho Boston. By a few bucks it is. I mean, why should asian food be cheap? Compared to its American counterparts? Anyhow I ordered the Com Suong Bi Cha, a rice dish that is very typical comfort food for me, so I expect a consistency here. Everything was great, the pork chop should be thinner, and crispier, but this is definitely not a complaint. 5 Stars. I also wanted soup, but not a large entree, so I ordered a small $6.95 beef meatball soup. It is literally some pho broth, cut meatballs, and a side of bean sprouts and pho accoutrement. No noodles, no extra meat. That is what the dish is. Again, no complaints, but since it was so simple, I should have asked for it to come out first to wet my appetite, and not as a accompaniment to my rice dish. Service was just no frills, but really slow if you ask me. The place needs a good dusting and wipedown, but the people are friendly and the food is good. They have a bizarre side menu that features Texas fried things, I do not understand it, maybe the family is from Texas, maybe they know their West Hartford clientele, but, perhaps it is worth checking out for some of you. read more

Nice little place. Very good 'pho'. Bit of a mess getting what I ordered though. I ordered pho (that came with beef tripe) and asked for extra tripe ($2.50). The soup I received had NO tripe. The waiter (owner?) brought me a tiny, really tiny cup with beef tripe. That wouldn't even cover what the soup should have had to begin with, and certainly not the 'extra' beef tripe. Bummed... My friend and I were looking to support a small business for lunch and pleased with the flavor of our food. Youngish guy started us with some water and checked in to see if we were ready to order shortly after we were settled. Interior was clean on a Friday at 11 am. Food came quickly (within 10 min). Most patrons were in and out within 30 min to an hour; we stayed for 3 hours catching up (without prompting, waiter gave us extra carafe of water!) We started with the summer roll and iced coffee, then we got pho (not pictured) and the grilled pork chop. Pho broth had a nice, rich flavor and generous portions of meat and noodles. Pork chop cooked perfectly with a good amount of meat and bbq spices. Overall tasty and worth the visit if you're in the area & looking to support a small business. We noticed a handful of takeout orders. Entrance was a bit tricky because the parking lot is just before the Shield St traffic light and after AutoZone, though, you can turn at the light and loop behind the building for parking. Pre-Covid, Pho Saigon was in my Vietnamese food rotation. I've ordered vermicelli bowls, pho, Banh Mi, egg rolls and a few other things. I've always been happy with the food quality. Pho Saigon is not my favorite area place for pho, but it is my area favorite for Banh Mi and a favorite for miscellaneous dishes. The atmosphere at Pho Saigon is mixed. Parts of the inside are quite nice. They have cool floor tiles and nice padded wooden chairs. Some other parts of the business need love. Some of the ceiling tiles should be replaced. The outside sign is seriously faded. Plants outside need pruning. For these reasons, atmosphere is not a selling point for Pho Saigon, but it could be with a little attention. Today, I visited for the first time in a while and ordered a grilled pork Banh mi and fried egg rolls (aka Cha Gio). Service was pretty good. Consistent with my prior experiences, Pho Saigon makes great Banh Mi. The Banh Mi consisted of grilled marinated pork, pickled carrots and daikon, cilantro, de-seeded jalapeño strips and cucumber on long, terrifically crusty bread that's like a mini baguette. They've created an elaborate dance with contrasting textures and flavors, and bright pops of green and orange color. The pork is salty and sweet. The pickled vegetables are acidic and lightly sweet. The jalapeño provides some heat. The bread and some of the vegetables are crisp, the meat is good chewy and the cucumber and pickled vegetables provide good moisture. This Banh Mi is one of my favorite sandwiches in the area. The egg rolls were good too. The outside was crispy. The filling was flavorful, and I also like the sweet, salty and acidic sauce. Five Stars for the food, but Four Stars overall due to the atmosphere. read more

Seems a bit like a hole in the wall, Pho Saigon in West Hartford really hits the spot for Vietnamese fare. The chicken skewers are almost a full size meal and full of flavor, and served with onions and bell peppers. The spicy lemongrass chicken (U9) was not super spicy but also very flavorful and a good sized portion, and includes bean sprouts, peanuts, and vermicelli noodles. PHO Saigon This Vietnamese restaurant has been around for over 6 years and I must have passed this location a hundred times on my way to the south end of Hartford and my favorite SHU restaurant. I met as Asian couple last week who recommended this restaurant and we decided to go to lunch today. It was actually larger than we expected and very cozy with good table service. There was five tables with customers at 1 PM in the afternoon. The menu was very descriptive in both Vietnam language and English. The choices on two sides of three large pages was very extensive. There was no lunch portion or specials. It took us a while before we could make a choice. We decided on Chicken Pho and Vietnamese Pam cake with shrimp. The Pho was good except the chicken was tough and should have been tender. The shrimp in the pancake was chopped up rather than whole be the pancake was crispy. Both dishes were bland and lacked any taste. There was a variety of sauces available at each table. For the price of $30, we would have been happier to lunch at SHU. The tea was very weak and almost tasted like plan hot water. Due to the wide variety of dishes we plan to return and try some other dishes. We will not be rushing back and will no longer order a chicken dish. read more

I'm not exactly sure how I've gone so long without writing a review here. I'm here at least once a month if not more. Great for big groups or a family gathering. It is definitely one of the best spots in town! First off, they have the crispiest Banh Xeo (Vietnamese pancake) around. They are able to custom make it to ensure my onion and scallion and bean sprout allergy is taken care of. I always try to split with someone to be good but I end up being able to eat a whole one by myself, veggies and all. Pho? Excellent in all broths. I get Pho Tai as my usual and my friends who order Pho Dac Biet are always satisfied. I'm excited to get pho in rain, heat, snow, any weather here. Friends who have come with me to try the yellow noodles or seafood broth also leave super elated with their choices. The flavors are on point and savory for any taste. Not a soup person? Every noodle dish can be ordered dry if you ask for it! I've tasted the yellow noodles dry and they taste just as fantastic. The great thing is there's so much variety to choose from. All of it is authentic in flavor and tastes very good. When relatives came from Texas they accidentally ended up coming back 3 times in one week for the Banh xeo, bun rieu, and the bun cha gio dishes. I've even seen friends and family dabble into the curry and rice dishes and say they're obsessed coming back for more. Pho Saigon is a Vietnamese staple around here. tl; dr: WE LOVE THIS PLACE!!! we stumbled upon this place years ago during a memorial day (or father's day..?) road trip because other pho places nearby were closed. they probably didn't expect the influx of ppl and service/food were VERY slow to come by. however, we were DELIGHTED when we did get the food! everything tasted great and that's what made us keep coming back. we always make it a point to eat here before and after we head up north. not to mention get takeouts for the road. this is definitely one of the things we look forward to the most during our road trips up north. it also helped that service was brisk and a lot more timely ever since lol. we tried a good variety of the menu (pho, bun bo hue, bun dishes, rice plates, cha gio, summer rolls) and EVERYTHING SLAPS! my favorite is definitely bun bo hue (hard to find in NYC, let alone good ones). it has vietnamese ham, beef shank, thinly-sliced, boneless pork hock, pork blood, thick rice noodles in a flavorful-but-not-pungent lemongrass broth. it's sooooooo tasty and comforting! as for the pho, i'd say the broth is slightly sweeter than what i'm used to (prolly because of more cinnamon..?) but still beats a lot of the pho spots in NYC (but not ATL though lol). the nuoc cham is more on the salty side, a little more sweetness and tartness from lime juice or vinegar would be even better. like other Viet spots, everything you need is on the table (sauces, utensils, etc.) and they're quick to get it for you if you do need anything else. the service is simple but that's just how i like it (aka. pls don't check on me every few bites). amazing food at a great price, we will continue to return for sure! read more

Don't confuse that with the Chinese spring rolls which are vegetarian. The vietnamese spring rolls are a delicious mix of minced meat and vegetables deep fried and perfectly crunchy. An amazing pho spot tucked away! I can't believe it took us so long to come here when we've always been so close. We stopped in for dinner and we're able to order our pho right away. I ordered beef pho with everything in it (tripe, flank, steak, brisket, tendon) and it was perfection! I barely had to add anything extra into the broth to balance it out. The place had just finished a major lunch rush, and as busy as it was, the staff is the redeeming factor for me. Totally sweet. Now, the food. I don't know about anything else on the menu, since I came here for phở. I ordered phở tái, no cilantro, add basil, and I wanted some nước mắm to go with it. I also ordered a glass of cà phê sữa đá. The waiter kept trying to get away while I was still ordering, because I kept adding things, and he just wanted to put the order in. I understand, the place was a little busy, but please let me finish ordering. The drink came out first, and although it was stronger than usual, it was good. The condiments at the table were a bit sketch. Empty squeeze bottles, and something that wasn't quite sa tế. My phở arrived, and the meat was in big pieces, though sliced thinly. The nước mắm wasn't quite what it should've been. The noodles were one big clump. I don't get that. And the soup was muddy AF. It should be very clean. This wasn't. And I don't put sauces into it. That's what the little side dishes are for. I couldn't make it through the bowl. Maybe their other food is good, but I'm not coming back for the phở. I walked in at 8:30pm there was still plenty of people there and it was very clean and simple. But I also noticed a very cheap simple combo menu on the wall that included things such as "Texas Style Fried Chicken". Keep that in mind. Anyways, I decided to try out the Oxtail Pho and Summer Rolls of course, both were outstanding! Summer Rolls had shrimp with thinly sliced pork as well and the Oxtail was very tender. I was already happy with the Pho, Summer Roll and a little fried rice but I was very curious with their combo menu. $3-$4 got me two pieces of fried chicken, one being a drumstick and one being a thigh. I HONESTLY expected nothing out of this. Why would it say "Texas Style" and all that? I can't confirm but I know there is a Vietnamese population in Texas and maybe the owner or chef learned how to make good fried chicken down south. Why do I assume this? Because the fried chicken here is the best fried chicken I've ever had ANYWHERE up here in CT. It was OUTSTANDING. From a Pho place? Seriously? Perfectly cooked, well seasoned, tender, the skin was so light and crispy, it was just outstanding. Obviously my low expectations helped make it even better but SERIOUSLY it was that good. There isn't too many good places up here to get noticeably good fried chicken, there definitely are some great places but little would I know that a Pho place would be one of them. Pho Saigon has cemented its place as my new favorite Vietnamese spot in CT. Having gone to Pho Boston for years, I had always passed over Pho Saigon since its quite hidden (and oddly enough located right next to Pho Boston). Oh boy was I missing out. While there, I ordered the Bun Bo Hue and a green papaya salad with grilled pork, shrimp, and jellyfish. The Bun Bo Hue was made with a light broth, with just the right amount of lemongrass and porky flavor. It was bountiful too, filled with pork hock, thinly sliced pork belly, brisket, tendon, fish cake, and soft, not over cooked pork blood which had the texture of silken tofu. The vermicelli itself was just the right amount of al dente and the broth had no trace of msg - leaving me not dying for a drink of water after. The papaya salad was a standout too, the hot/grilled pork serving as a good counter for the sweet, crisp julienned green papaya. Fish sauce was served on the side as well, though I highly recommend a healthy pouring of that over the salad. The jellyfish in the salad brought me back to my childhood of Chinese weddings and had slight hints of sesame oil. If you want authentic Vietnamese food, come to Pho Saigon! I noticed they have a selection of Southern fried food as well which I will definitely try the next time I am here! read more

So after my bad review, I decided to give them a chance again but I placed a to go order recently. I called them 12pm for two orders of banh canh cau ; udon noodles with crab meat, shrimp, and fish cake. When I got home I got two orders or seafood banh canh. The broth isn't the same and I didn't want no artificial crab meat. I don't know why I even try with this restaurant anymore. I place an order there, they messed up. I place an order to go, and they messed up again. I am over this place and the old man that works here still has an attitude. Their food is consistent and very good. Pretty authentic I believe. Sometimes they would have their off days but mostly good. This is our go-to place whenever I am craving for some summer rolls and pho. Always enjoying their food when dining in or ordering for take out. My only complaint about this place is the service is slow. It's like a one man one woman show, so you have to wait a little bit to be serviced. I ordered for the first time today, for takeout. A few big things: 1. The woman on the phone took down my order incorrectly-- both items. I even gave her the numbers and repeated my order back to her. I ordered the pork Hu Tieu Dac Biet, H01, small, and the pork Banh Mi. When I picked them up (and mine was the only takeout order there), he said they were both chicken. I corrected him, and he said, "ok, we'll make you a new one." I didn't have much time, so I let it go and smiled and said I would try it. How did they get *both* wrong? Maybe because, when I looked at the check (he showed me the shorthand handwritten check slip), it didn't clearly say pork or anything. It's not like I would be able to understand what it said anyway-- it just said "H1" and "S2", even though the H1 comes with a choice of chicken or pork, and she hadn't written down which one I wanted. 2. They left out the quail eggs from my Hu Tieu Dac Biet. Really sad, as that was the part I was looking most forward to! 3. They have not updated their prices online. I don't know what the in-person prices are, but it's a really bad look for a restaurant to not have updated prices. I'm not talking about 10 cents here, either-- look at my screenshots for the price discrepancies. Both of the meals I ordered were overcharged. I should have listened to the other review that said the same thing, but they said the employee argued with him, and I wasn't about to waste more time. If it was 50 cents on one meal, I wasn't about to cry over it or even post a review here. But $1.50 on one of the meals, and 50c on the other? I called to kindly let them know about the mistake (I've worked in restaurants! I know mistakes are made), and the woman said, "ok so you want to order some quail eggs today?" No "I'm sorry" or anything. When I went in, there were only 3 tables of customers. It wasn't packed by any means. I think they abuse their 2019 award, thinking they can do whatever they want now. Too bad I won't be back, as the chicken banh mi was good. I've been here twice and I must say that their food was delicious!!! I had their com tam dac biet (special rice with pork chop dish) and it was so good! The meat was well-seasoned, charred, and still tender! During my second visit, I got their vermicelli bowl (U4 on menu) and that was also good! They served a well-balanced bowel of vegetables, meat, and noodles. For these dishes, the fish sauce marries all the flavors together and it was done very well! So far, food has been awesome. The only thing I would critique is their service and friendliness. I have not had any issues with food orders or service, but sometimes it would be nice for the server to refill water, smile to his customers, or greet them good bye especially in a restaurant with a so-so amount of customers... I have not tried their pho yet, but I will definitely come back to try out other dishes! read more
