Not bad pho, not great ambiance Came here on a whim. Missus wanted some soup so we went to this place as our date night trek. It's close to a sporting complex, in the same plaza as a larger brewery. Not the easiest to spot, will need the gps to assist. The inside is sparse in decoration but the staff was very friendly. We got the spring rolls, the fried wonton, a pho and a bahn mi. Food came out quick, we took pics then dug in. The wontons had a good pork and scallion filling. They didn't need sauce to taste good, which is a good sign. The spring rolls were okay, crispy but oily and the dipping sauce was weak. The pho was good, meat was tender, noodles were okay, and soup base was chicken broth with spices. The bahn mi was pretty good as well. Pickled veggies were very sweet, the ham was tender enough and the mayo butter was heavy handed. The bread was crusty but soft, not what I consider to be proper bahn mi bread, but good enough. Price was about 45 for the two apps and entrees, which is about average for that style of meal. It's not anything to write home about. I would recommend ordering to go mainly because the dining space is right underneath a wrestling ring and the floor shakes when someone gets body slammed below. Pho Van has been on my Try List for a few months. I recently had lunchtime errands nearby, so I called ahead for take out. I ordered Rare Steak Pho (packed to mix at home), the Van Special Fried Rice, a Steak Banh Mi, fried egg rolls and Natural Rice Wrapper Vegetable and Vermicelli Rolls with Spicy Peanut Sauce Dip. I shared all of this with my family at home. We were very impressed with Pho Van's food. The Pho Broth was awesome, especially considering I assembled the pho a few hours later for dinner. Pho Van is definitely in play as a top Pho spot in CT. We ate the rest of the food 30 minutes later for lunch. The fried rice, with a substantial mix of sausage, shrimp, beef, pork etc., was up there with CT's best fried rice too. Full of stuff and flavor. The Banh Mi and Rolls were also very good. First time ordering from here. I went in and ordered takeout. The young girl that took my order was very friendly, patient and helpful. I told her what I was looking for and she picked out a perfect PHO soups for us. I wanted a beef Pho with lean meat. She recommended P2. TAI (Beef noodle soup with rare, thinly-sliced steak). The other was P10. PHO GA (shredded chicken noodle soup with beef broth). The chicken was nice clean white meat. Both soups were delicious. We also ordered A1. CHA GIO, egg rolls. Not your typical thick roll, it was crispy, fresh tasting ingredients and very good. The sauce was light and complimented the roll. I did feel that those were over priced however. We chose to dine in and our server was great, patiently answering our questions and making suggestions. Always a huge fan of BÁNH MÌ (sandwich) because of the sweet and savory flavors and textures of the crunchy daikon radish, pickled carrots, cucumber, cilantro and sliced fresh jalapeños, I found the chicken BÁNH MÌ here did not disappoint. My taste buds were dancing from the combination of flavors!! The BÀNH XEO (Vietnamese crepe made with rice flour batter and filled with bean sprouts) was fun to try, eating a piece of the crispy crepe wrapped in a lettuce leaf with the mint & fresh veggies and dipped in fish sauce. It was a little greasy but we still enjoyed it. Again... the crunch of those fresh veggies! The BUN Vermicelli was good, as well as the fried rice I ordered to go. I called at 6:42 p.m. I waited almost an hour from the time that I called until the time that my order was ready. I was told 25 minutes on the phone. When I got home, I found that my crêpe was burned on the outside and raw on the inside. This is the second time that I've had an issue here lately. Was looking for some Vietnamese food to comfort myself after getting off a long flight and I knew I had to come down to Pho Van not only because it was conveniently close to the airport but because I noticed that it was run by a sweet older Vietnamese couple. Upon arrival, the parking lot is super spacious and the restaurant was relatively easy to find. Just look for the Pho Van signage and you'll enter a set of doors, then you'll see a second set of doors located on your right. Immediately upon entry, the bells chime and you see the illustration on the whiteboard which asks guests to be patient with the service since they don't have much if any support staff. I was seated immediately as I came around 6:30pm on a Monday and was the only guest in the entire restaurant but it looked like they were busy with to-go orders. The table layout and paper menus align with what you'd expect from a traditional Vietnamese restaurant. You could also notice that the entire restaurant is very organized and clean. - Goi Cuon Thit Nuong (Grilled Pork Spring Roll) - It came with two rolls and the pork had a nice char to it. Not the most tender pork I've had but it's a satisfying appetizer paired with the peanut sauce. - Com Suon, Bi Cha, Trung (Rice with Pork Chop, Shredded Pork Skin, Egg Loaf, and Fried Egg) - This dish comes with regular steamed rice not broken rice in case that matters to anyone. The pork chop was nicely cooked and had a nice balance between lean and fattiness. Eggloaf was flavorful and not too try. Fried egg was perfectly crisp while still being runny. Portion is also huge! Is Pho Van perfect? Maybe not. But for the area, price, and taste, you can't complain. Bonus points for it being a literal mom and pop business. Service may be a bit slow but please remember that it's just an older couple trying to run the entire restaurant operation by themselves. I had fresh shrimp and chicken rolls to start in rice paper wraps. The accompanying sauce was kind of a mix of peanut sauce and hoisin and was really tasty. The roll was also big and good, the only problem I had with it was the chicken was super tough and chewy. Friendly service, she was on top of things. Totally blown away by this unpretentious tiny off the grid Vietnamese restaurant. It's a little bit of a hike from I-91 off of Day Hill Rd. In Windsor but you'll be rewarded for your persistence. I ordered a small bowl of Pho with brisket and raw roast beef on the side. This was without question one of the very best beef pho broths I've had. The broth is a rich, bold, complex, enormously flavorful simmered for hours bowl of comfort food memories. Service was friendly and reasonably quick even though they were quite busy when I arrived. As soon as you walk in you can tell it is an authentic Vietnamese restaurant as you are surrounded by the smell of delicious pho broth brewing. They have a open kitchen you can hear and smell all the fresh Vietnamese ingredients being whipped up fresh to order! The menu at Pho Van is extensive, with a wide variety of dishes to choose from. Some of the most popular dishes include pho, banh mi, and bun cha. The pho is made with a rich and flavorful broth, and the banh mi are made with fresh ingredients. I ordered the fresh spring rolls Goi Coun to start off. Some places cut them in half or do extremely small portions- I was happy to see they were huge and I could even tell my order was rolled to order because the wrapper was soft and everything inside was very fresh! I also got my favorite Vietnamese iced coffee. They didn't present it with the dual cup drip but instead brought it out in a cup all prepared. It still hit the spot! For our main meals- I ordered my favorite kind of pho - the Dac biet in large size and also got the Com Boun Nuong sirloin beef rice plate to go. My pho was phenomenal! Everything a good pho should be- served hot, fresh full of fresh rice noodles and loaded with all the flank, steak, brisket, tendon and meatball I was craving! I got a rare steak and beef ball phó, some egg rolls, and a shrimp Vietnamese salad. The broth on the phó was jamming. It was a full flavor beef bone broth. After eating the noodles and meat, I drank the broth to the bottom. The egg rolls were perfectly cooked and tasty. The Vietnamese shrimp salad was made with cabbage. I was surprised as it's usually done with papaya. It was still great. The owner told me he makes his broth fresh every day, and it takes 20 hours. This is authentic Vietnamese food. It was insanely delicious and left me wishing I was hungrier than I was. We split the fried wontons which are homemade and the best I ever had. The summer rolls were fresh and scrumptious. As being Vietnamese from CA, I've had countless of vermicelli bowls so it was hard for me to judge lightly. I would say the food here was good 3/5 in my experience, but a definite 5/5 for the Vietnamese food scene in CT! My boyfriend loves Banh Mi's (Vietnamese sandwiches) and thought their BBQ one was great. Too bad it was far from where I was living at the time (Wallingford, CT). I would have gone more often to try out their other meals! The staff was very friendly and accommodating. It can take a little long for food to come out, but it's good to know that they're making it fresh rather than heating it up from yesterday's leftovers. The restaurant is tucked away in a plaza so parking is plenty, but the location may not be the best for the business.
