I did appreciate that this restaurant was very clean and not cramped at all. I can't complain about the service because let's be real, this is an Asian restaurant. I think I actually got pretty good service: my order came out quickly, nothing was missing or messed up. I got the large steak pho (#23) and shared spring rolls with my family. The spring rolls didn't have enough flavor, even with the peanut sauce. I think it needs some carrots and bay leaves. The steak pho wasn't that great. There wasnt that much beef and it was really dry and overcooked. At least they didn't put much MSG unlike other pho places. Their large is pretty big for $6.70 and it's filling so I can't complain about that. Hmm, I'd say this place is more like 3.5 stars. We just moved to the area so I've been pigging out big time, "exploring"! Phō is one of my favorite foods so my husband and I tried this last Saturday night and it was pretty busy but yet the table turnovers are fairly quick so you won't wait long at all (what feels like seconds actually). We love the raw beef pho so we both ordered that as well as summer rolls and two Thai tea with boba (this is my perfect meal at a pho restaurant!). The broth was so rich and delicious. I barely added anything to it (I usually dump a ton of soy sauce), but I was disappointed that the "raw" beef was served inside the soup which of course was then fully cooked. The food came out super quick which was awesome but I really do eat my beef raw just ok the normal, so this bummed me out. But the broth was awesome and so was the boba and for that I would go back and just make sure to ask for it raw on the side (ya know, like how the menu said it was going to come). For my next pho outing in the Gilroy area there's another place I'd like to try out before returning here (clearly the raw thing is a deal breaker for me, so if it's not for you, go here!). Quite disappointed with the quality of the food. I found this place from yelp and after 7 hour drive on raining day, my friend and I decided to eat pho to warm up body and picked this place because of yelp stars. First, this place is quite messy, there is one guy moving a cart around eating tables to clean the tables with dirty dishes, which is quite disgusting. After 20 mins waiting, finally one guy came to us and asked what to order, when I saw some employees were just chitchat there, they didn't come to serve us. My friend and I ordered large pho tai and here is the most disappointing part. Compared with the price of the large plate, it only has like 5,6 piece of very very thin beef rare steak. I understand because of inflation, everything is expensive now, but really? Only 5 piece of meat for $17 dollar noodle? The overall portion is very small and different from the large pho size I remembered. I would never go back again, with this money, I would prefer Ramen. This spot is hella good! We drive from Hollister due to Hollister not having any good pho joints. We are originally from San Jose and this restaurant makes us feel at home with the best pho around. We are never disappointed with our food here. I have been coming here with my mom for nearly a decade. It's definitely not a fancy place, it is family owned and run so it has taken them a long time to update the interior. However, since their interior updates it does look much nicer. Granted, the looks never kept us from coming before. My husband isn't the biggest soup fan, but he loves getting the vermicelli plates. Overall, it could feel cleaner inside, but they have always have people in, so they are always clearing tables. Overall, I love the the pho here. It is our go to pho place. I always get their spring rolls too, since I appreciate that they don't put mint in the spring rolls. Other places also seem to put a lot of anise which to me can be overpowering if overdone. So for some, they might choose somewhere else, but we choose here nearly every time. read more

We were passing though this town on our way back home and stopped by this restaurant. I ordered a bun with bbq pork. My mom had a special diet and can't eat meat and I appreciate that they were able to substitute the meat to accommodate her. When you're driving back to the Bay Area from a wedding in Paso Robles with an awful hangover, pho from Pho Tranh An is just the cure you need. Zack and I have stopped here twice on our way back from trips to Paso Robles/San Luis Obispo and, both times, it's been a life-saver! Today, for $22, we got our lunch and dinner: - coconut juice - a bit sweet but with real, big chunks of coconut in it (around $3) - fresh spring rolls with peanut sauce (around $5) - for him - beef pho (around $6) - for me - seafood pho (around $6) The pho came with delicious toppings - lots of basil, cilantro, lime, jalapenos, and bean sprouts. We each had two small spring rolls for lunch and one for dinner. We ate half of our delicious food at the restaurant and carefully transported the other half home for dinner. A decent little Vietnamese place in a crossroads of a town that basically gives you fast food options and 'go hungry', otherwise. The food was decent, though nothing special. The chicken wings looked amazing, but were just so-so. The bun was alright also... my boyfriend's soup was actually quite good. I've gotten take out here a few times but yesterday my co-worker and I decided to eat in. Pho Thana An is located in a small strip mall next to Best Buy. Parking in front can be challenging at lunch so we just park near Best Buy. As soon as you walk in someone yells "how many?" and points to a table for you to sit at. Kinda weird. We sat down and looked at all the "stuff" on the table. They have several containers, one filled with chopsticks, one with soup spoons and one with forks and big American soup spoons. There was also a container with napkins and an abundance of sauces. That's alot of stuff on one table for 2! We both ordered the Pho. I got the 17 and she got the 23. They offer S, M & L. The Medium was more than enough and I actually left quite a bit in my bowl when I was done. The broth was just okay but the meat was inedible. Actually I had very little meat in mine. It was pretty much all stringy fat and gristle. YUCK! I grossed my co-worker out by picking it out of my bowl. Her dish was similar but because her meat was raw I think she actually got better pieces. Both dishes come with a plate of mint, bean sprouts and lime. This adds so much flavor to the broth which I think was pretty good. Once we were clearly finished we sat at our table for quite awhile waiting for our bill. Apparently we had to go pay at the counter when they had our bill waiting for us. It would have been nice if they let us know that when taking out order. For two medium bowl of Pho and two waters the bill came to $13. Not a bad deal at all. This place is okay if you're really craving Pho since there's not to many options in Gilroy. Living in the San Jose area for the majority of my life definitely gives you a new perspective on authentic pho. Okay maybe that's not entirely true, but I guess it has made me picky when I go out of my way to look for it. This place physically doesn't look to different from any other pho restaurant; huge pictures of their appetizers and pho as well as some TVs scattered around here and there. Oh and let's not forget about 'Cash Only". Anyways, there wasn't too many people when me and my friends arrived for lunch on a Monday. Same old story, someone comes up to take your order after looking at your menu for 20 seconds. I'm pretty quick when it comes to pho so this wasn't a problem. The food arrived quickly (as expected) and the flavors were pretty good. I had to adjust to broth with a little more hoisin sauce, but it turned out the way I liked my pho. We all ordered larges and what can I say, the bowls were huge! On the other hand, the contents within the bowl were surely lacking; I expected a good amount of noodles and meat but it seemed like they put a small (or perhaps a medium) serving in a large bowl. Overall, this place is decent in terms of its pho; I just wish their portions were bigger. Yeah, we were spoiled by Vietnamese food in, um, Vietnam. This place is authentic, but we've had better. ;) We were on the way home from a wedding and this was about 1/2 way, so we stopped for lunch. It's quite clean inside and the food is served super quick, so it's a good alternative to fast food. I got the grilled pork with vermicelli. It was okay, but not as tasty as I expected, even though the pork was quite salty. Perhaps this place doesn't use MSG? We noticed the noodle soups were also quite tame. Noodles could use improvement. They didn't seem chewy enough. I liked their fish sauce based dressing. Tangy, sweet, but not overly so. I also liked that they provided a generous mix of lettuce, carrots, and radish. DH and his friend griped about the shortage of meat in their pho. We also got some spring rolls, which were fresh and came with a generous amount of goopy hoisin-peanut dipping sauce. The spring rolls had shrimp on the top and pork slices on the bottom. Flavor was all right. I noticed another reviewer griping about the weird taste of the pork, but I've had this at other places and it's the same. It's a subtle musty, gamey taste. This is the only decent pho restaurant in my hometown of Gilroy so what more can you ask for? Like others before me, I came here to eat Pho. Per Yelp, this was my best shot at at taming the beast deep within me - AKA my pho addiction. I ordered a large bowl of rare steak and brisket pho and wasn't too impressed with what I got. While service was semi-friendly and fairly fast, my bowl of pho was just ok. It arrived steaming hot and the broth had a nice color and aroma, with strong hints of star anise filling my nose. That's about as good as it got. I always taste my broth before adding anything as some pho broths are good enough to stand alone without having to add anything extra. That wasn't the case here. While the broth was ok, it was definitely lacking the depth and complexity of flavor that makes a great pho broth. Needless to say, I added almost everything they offered - lots of hot pil, siracha, hoysin, lime, basil, jalepeno, and sprouts. Even then, it was still a pretty mediocre bowl of pho. The potrions were good and the cuts of meat were fresh and of pretty good quality. The sprouts and basil were both fresh as well. Service was pretty good for how busy it was and parking was fairly ample as well. I hit the outlets at least once a year and I doubt I will be back here soon. read more

This used to be my favorite Pho spot when the old owner had it. Today I went in with my son and 2 pho, 2 milk tea, and 1 spring roll, was $48. I was shocked to say the least, but I was hungry and craving Pho. Service was extremely slow and the pho was lacking flavor. This is seriously one of the worst pho restaurants I have ever been to. We came during covid so our meals were served in to go boxes and then to sit outside under the tent. The tent were set up decent but the trash can was right in the view of our tables and the ground will filled with trash. Tables were not wiped down at all. We had to wipe down our own tables. We got our Pho and it was so plain I added just about everything and it still didn't help. The meats inside the pho was also very tough. From the trip to the brisket. The only reason why I continue to come here is because it's pretty much the only Vietnamese restaurant in town that is conveniently located. Honestly I think I will no longer go here. Our regular go-to's are the seafood egg noodle soup and rare beef pho with shrimp cakes and spring rolls. The iced coffee is strong and even if the portion is small, it absolutely gets the job done and isn't too packed with condensed milk like most Vietnamese coffee options. The boba smoothies are decent, a little bland, but the avocado was a good choice. They have some hidden Vietnamese treats like egg soda... yeah... egg soda, ask the staff about it. The sauces are amazing and the chili oil isn't too spicy, but rather has that perfect smoked chili flavor. I prefer the pho vermicelli noodles to the egg ones because I prefer a less gummy consistency in my noodles, but there has never been a complaint from the family or anyone w me have brought by. They just opened a spot in Salinas right across the street from the mall that is much larger and accepts debit cards, but regardless it is a good, delicious, and consistent place to enjoy in Gilroy. read more

What happened? Did the restaurant change ownership? I've been to Pho Thanh An three times, the first two times in 2010 the food was fabulous. Large portions, tasty pho/bun/rice plates/spring rolls, clean. Unfortunately this third and, which will be, my last time, it felt like a completely different restaurant. When I walked in, I noticed right away the place was very dirty. The floor was so greasy that they even put up a sign on the wall asking customers not to walk on the tile floor because it is slippery, but you cannot avoid the grease when you sit on your chair and it slides around due to the greasy floor. The food was such a disappointment. The pho broth was unflavored and the BBQ pork was over cooked (charred in fact) not to mention the portion was half the size as last year. I would have given it 1 star based just on my last dining experience there, but I added another star because it used to be so good. I did not love the food here. After a long, hot day hiking at Pinnacles, food was what we really needed. That being said, the fact that I wasn't impressed by the food even though I was starving like no other must really mean something. Anyways, I got the pork chop + egg roll + fried chicken combination rice plate. The food came out very quickly, which was a definite plus. I was saddened by the meat-to-rice ratio. Thank god I got the combination plate, or else that one meager pork chop would not be enough for even little ol' me! Anyways, the pork chop was tender, moist, and flavored well. I was very happy with the taste. The egg roll was good as well, but nothing much to differentiate it from other egg rolls. The fried chicken was good, but again, not too special. Not bad. The pho broth here is a bit too much on the cinnamon side for me, but after a few gulps in, the taste of cinnamon isn't so strong. Pretty good though considering it seems to be like the one of none pho options in the area, so it'll do if you're craving soemthing soupy. Our waters were refilled a few times during our short munching stay, which is often rare to happen at these types of pho/noodley places.
