I decided to stop by Jonty's after a morning hiking nearby. My friend told me about this place as she saw it on social media. Considering its location, I was a bit hesitant to try since I live in San Jose where we are spoiled with a plethora of Vietnamese food. The person helping was very nice and service was quick. However, the banh mi was very Americanized and missed some of the iconic toppings of a banh mi. There was no pate or Vietnamese mayo (my favorite part) and the pickled veggies didn't taste pickled enough. The menu itself labeled it as a sandwich, rather than a banh mi. Although the sandwich wasn't bad, it was disappointing. If you live in Morgan Hill and have a craving for banh mi, I would make the drive up to SJ to get authentic banh mi. read more

Was recommended to this place by our realtor when we moved to Morgan hill. Service is good what you would expect from a place next to railroad park. Coming from Westminster in the OC then moving to San Jose, those two areas I was always around viet food so coming to this place I tried to give it some leeway since I know since moving to Morgan hill there is not many places to gather Vietnamese ingredients to cook at home The banh mi itself needs work. The baguette came out pretty dry. For their selection, it seems like they try to add multiple variations of banh mi meats into one rather than the way other banh mi places do specific meats per each sandwich. (Thịt nướng , chả lụa, heo quay) The pate and mayonnaise were lacking. The đồ chua or picked daikon and carrots were kind of lackluster. That being said it seems like one of the few places to get banh mi in Morgan hill, I do feel that they should not be charging such premium price for their sandwiches. Tucked away in a cute little neighborhood, I was amazed by the front of the restaurant I decided to walk in and give it a try Coming from Santa Clara, I was tired in the early morning so I came here to see if they had some Vietnamese coffee, and so glad they did! This viet coffee is legit, as in it's super strong, not too sweet (which I like) and just overall STRONG. More like janky eatery, am I right? Jonty's Vietnamese Eatery has long inhabited this kiosk-like space near the spot where the farmers market is held, and I finally decided to try it this trip back to Morgan Hill. After someone finding parking even on a market day, we walked over and ordered a few sandwiches ($12.95 each) to take home to try. I tried to give leeway since this is geographically far removed from San Jose, but what I tried was also culinarily removed from what I'm looking for in a good a Vietnamese sandwich. None of them had mayo or pate, so they were just too dry. The pickled veggies lacked both daikon and sugar. The proteins varied, with the steak feeling the most okay, the crispy pork belly not maintaining the crisp by the time I ate it, and the lemongrass pork gighly deficient in lemongrass. And Maggi seasoning sauce seemed to be a crutch in at least the pork belly sandwich when it should be a supporting flavor at best. Maybe there are more worthwhile options on the menu, like rice or noodle entrees with some other proteins, but Jonty's lists their sandwiches at the top of the menu, and what I tried simply didn't impress. read more

Jonty's Vietnamese Eaterly is a small food stand with patio area and long lines. It's a very popular spot and conveniently located, so that you can walk to the playground, train station, and downtown district. Not a dine-in indoor restaurant. You're eating outside in the open patio spaces. Plenty of big trees and tall plants here, so it's shady and cool. Order at front counter and expect a longer wait time sometimes. Utensils and trash bin is outside. It's next to the Saturday Farmer's Market too. Excellent location. I had the BBQ chicken topped onto my fresh salad greens with a house dressing. Yummy! I just wish it had more chicken meat on mine. Tasty and good. Thai tea was too sweet for me and the brew was strong. What a wake up call. High sugar afternoon, lol! I used to find myself in Morgan Hill during the week often and Jonty's was one of my go-to lunch spots. I was so happy to be back in the area during their limited opening hours and even happier to find their food is still fantastic! The pork belly is soft and flavorful; the bread doesn't scratch up your mouth; and one banh mi is easily 1.5 meals. There are a decent number of outdoor tables available to eat at but only a few are covered. I met a chef at this year's Morgan Hill Food & Wine Festival who asked about my favorite local entree -- he wasn't impressed with my answer (we both agreed I was what they call - basic, lol). He told me to check out the Banh Mi at Jonty's, so here I am. The Banh Mi sandwich comes on a French baguette with garlic, sautéed onions, cilantro, cucumber, jalapeño, and pickled carrots -- plus your choice of protein. I went with steak (should've gone pork belly, obviously, but tried to make a "healthier" Wednesday lunch choice). It was good -- solid flavors, great spice, and crunch. I'd give it about a 3/5, mostly because the steak could've been a little better quality. For a local Morgan Hill spot, Jonty's is a great, authentic Vietnamese find -- tucked away on Depot, surrounded by a variety of plants, with a simple patio of tables and benches. Great sandwiches and pretty average pricing. The sandwiches are big. The curry chicken was flavorful but if order to go, the bread will get a little soggy. Love this place! I suggest calling and placing your order ahead of time because they can get very busy and it could take a while to get your food. They have the best spring rolls. Get the pork belly banh mi. It's like your favorite Chinese bbq restaurant where they sell the crispy skinned roast pork and your traditional Vietnamese sandwich store marry. It's a great combo, and I love the contrast of the pickled veggies. I was expecting it to be hard to eat or messy, but the meat and the bread meld together quite nicely. It's a crispy on the outside but soft in the inside type of baguette. There is also plenty of juicy pork, but could use a little more skin. That's the yummy part. This sandwich is best when you eat it fresh! I also ordered the honey lemonade, but it's just too sweet for me. If I came earlier in the day I would've tried their cafe de sua (Vietnamese coffee). A true family run established icon in Morgan Hill. I always get the steak Banh mi. Why? Because the anchovy paste they add to it is a delicious contrast. I'm not too familiar with Jonty's/Morgan Hill but it's right next to the train station so it's quite a convenient location for commuters and the people who live nearby in downtown Morgan Hill. It comes with your choice of protein over rice with a side salad. Other protein choices include steak, lemongrass pork, curry chicken, cha lua, etc. The crispy pork belly was good and juicy but the skin could have been just a bit more crunchy, that's just my preference. I also wished it came with more pickled veggies. I know the salad had some kind of house dressing but all that was missing was the extra pickled carrots and daikon to make it complete. Was on my way back home to San Jose and decided to give this spot a try since they got great reviews. This eatery is located at a train stop and next to a kids playground. Seem like they can get very busy at times. I came on a Tuesday around 2ish and was the only person ordering. I ordered 3 crispy pork sandwiches. 2 of them with veggies on the side. I ate the 1st sandwich in my truck before got back on the road. They toast the bread for a while so it had a good texture on it. But to me the pork had little to no flavor. And for the pickles they only use carrots. Definitely not your traditional daikon and carrots. Seem like they just toss a little vinegar on it. Later that night I ate the 2nd sandwich and noticed that the bread was super stale. I've probably ate at every Vietnamese sandwich spot in San Jose and one thing I noticed about their bread is they get stale very easy after a day. And this bread seem like it was 2-3 days old.
