This was our first time here & it was disappointing. The Spring rolls were huge, but not so flavorful. The Chicken Vermacilli was dry too and not very flavorful. My friend got the Beef Vermacilli and wasn't impressed. He took out the lettuce and said it seemed old. Friendly service, relatively clean, but no toilet paper in restroom. Hole in the wall, mom and pop shop with great food. You may have to wait a bit, since it's run by the family mainly, but the food is well worth it and they're such lovely people! I love the Bun Bo hue and the Vietnamese coffee certainly hits the spot. To go packaging is also impeccable, I've never had a spill thus far. It has been a year ago since I Discovered this Restaurant but finally made it back . Even though this Visit I couldn't stay a while, the take out was great. The Owners were very nice people, just as they were on my first Visit. The Wife is Cute, Sexy and talkative. I Ordered Chicken PHO, Egg Rolls, Chicken and Pork Sandwich's, and wings. Great Meal Plenty to share and PHO left ova for the next day. The PHO chicken, large Breast cuts but a bit dry for my taste. The Egg Rolls good 4 pieces but it seems to be 2 cut in half's. One of my favorite place in the area for Vietnamese egg rolls - you wrap them with lettuce, stuff it with veggies, and dip it in the sauce. This place's rendition of the egg rolls are worth coming back for. Have it with Vietnamese coffee, and some char-grilled pork, or even banh mi (which is what I did) and you're good to go. I only tried this place out because it's the only pho place anywhere near my office. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do! I went after what I assume may have been a lunch rush and there were only 2 people there (one of whom I felt like had some affiliation with the restaurant). The proprietor was in the kitchen and it took her a little bit to come out. The tables are teeny tiny, like 2 tops with 4 chairs. It was clean enough overall, with the typical mash up décor - a little modern stuff, a little traditional Asian stuff, random color scheme, etc. I went for a basic pho tai to get the best idea of the food quality. The broth is a little thin and not quite flavorful enough. There was a good amount of meat and noodles. I also went during the time of the great lime shortage, so I received a LEMON instead... no bueno. The owner was very nice, but kept disappearing for long periods of time, so I made sure to catch her so I could pay ahead of time. I ordered a chicken banh mi for $3.50 and an iced tea for $1.50, ($5 total) plus tax, which came to $5.50, so I guess their prices were a few pennies over the menu price, since tax is 8.25%. But, the math geek in me digresses... The iced tea was what I thought it would be, and the chicken banh mi was great. It was full of meat and the staff was polite and outgoing. IMO, best crawfish in town and at only 5.99 a pound! The crawfish are a good size, with most of them ranging anywhere from 4-6" in length. The sauce and spices they're cooked in are just right, fragrant and flavorful with an almost creamy buttery consistency that acts as the perfect dipping sauce for the tails. And the heads, my god the head fat is bright yellow and savory and rich, how crawfish head fat should be! I haven't tried the pho or banh mi here but the eggs rolls are definitely worth mentioning. They are freshly fried to order and are scalding hot and crispy and meaty with a side of very fresh vegetables to wrap them in (not like the vegetables at some places where it looks like it's been sitting around for a bit too long). Anyways it's worth mentioning that they don't serve crawfish everyday so it's best to call ahead if that's what your planning on getting. And when they sell out for the day, that's it that's all folks. They only offer crawfish if it's fresh enough and large enough for their standards which I can appreciate. But when they do have it, theirs really can't be beat! This place is run solely by the lovely couple who own the place so service can be slow at times if things are busy. But for me that just adds to the charm of the place, and really the couple who own it couldn't be more nicer or friendlier people. I love coming here for lunch since it's never too busy, and they give you your food pretty quickly. It's a mom and pop kind of place so it definitely shows in the food. The place it kind of older looking but it's clean and the condiments on the table look fresh and tidy. I usually go for the Pho or the Bun Bo hue both are tasty. Very generous portion for the price and good amount of meat! The counter can be a little slow when paying but they usually only have one server so all is forgiven. And the menu is tight with just two pages, not a massive listing of all things "Asian". Had some bahn mi on there (no pate)... it would probably be tough to expect authentic bahn mi with pate. The spring rolls were big and fresh. Peanut sauce was good and not too sweet. The pho was solid. That opinion is based on the broth that was savory and not sweet. The meats were great with a good balance or tendon, fatty brisket, and meatballs. It was missing tripe though and some of the brisket looked like it had a touch of freezer burn. Had to ask for some pickled red chile sauce (not sriracha) and could have used a few more jalapeños on the side. Overall, we liked this place. Though not perfect, the flavors were solid, and df the places we've tried in the southwest side of town, this is the best food by far. We will be back. read more

Went here today and ate 2 lbs of spicy crawfish, nearly finished it all. It was super tasty and easy to eat, the corn was nicely marinated in it and it came with a potato, which I couldn't fit down my pipe. The sauce on the crawfish is excellent. There are not very many authentic Vietnamese restaurants located in the Stafford area and this happened to be one of those places. Although hidden away off of 90 - Main and Murphy, it was worth the trip. We were told the place recently opened and decided to go in and try a few things off of the menu. Not the best parking lot, since it's a small complex. The establishment was cleaned and the employees were very friendly and attentive. Our choice of appetizers were the Vietnamese Egg Rolls and the Fried Tan Mai Special Chicken Wings. I'm a huge fan of chicken wings and is always compelled to order them. The Egg Rolls are wrapped in thin rice paper, making the texture of it very crispy and crunchy. The rolls came out golden brown to perfection and they combination of pork and pawn was very tantalizing. The chicken wings were a totally different concept. They were pan fried with this special sauce that was both sweet and very spicy. I actually liked the sauce it was pan fried in. I could pour it on just about anything. It paired well with the wings. We ordered the Pho Dac Biet Tan Mai. This beef noodle soup was loaded with everything from eye of round steak to the fatty briskets. The taste and aroma was natural. No indications of msg or other additives like places such as Pho Saigon, which to me is like the McDonald's of Vietnamese restaurants. There was plenty of noodles and meat that I could not even finish it all. The bean sprouts and other vegetables were also fresh. Another soup we ordered was the Bun Bo Hue. You have the option of either having it spicy or non-spicy. We chose spicy and yes it did come very spicy. The noodles were very tasty and not glued together like most other Pho restaurants that are in a rush to get food out. The meat was very tender and came off as you bit into it. I will say the portions were very huge and the egg rolls are very filling. They appear small, but beware you may not be able to finish your entree alone. I arrived and someone was ordering when she was done she looked up to me for my order I asked for 2lbs crawfish /8.99lb 3lbs are 6.99lb so I said I'll take 3lbs with 1 corn and 1 potatoe then. Payment was collected at the time of the order even though I was dining in. I asked for 4 limes and she said it would be 75 cents that's interesting to me since that is a garnish but ok. Banh mi is YUUUUUMHHH MI!!! My hubbie and I just moved to Stafford and were so excited to see this place in our neighborhood. For the past 6+ years we have been looking for a place that slightly compares to Cali's for Banh Mi... and we hit the jackpot with Pho Tan Mai! The bread is soft, the meat is tender and very tasty... ooohhh and the mayo is superb :) My husband is vegetarian and he loves the tofu and the meatless ham banh mi. He also tried the crawfish there and LOVED it... mmmm garlic butter... (drool). The owner is very, very friendly... which is refreshing since most Vietnamese restaurants don't have great customer service. She even knows our names, which make the place feel homey... The vermicelli dishes are pretty good. I haven't tried everything on her menu... but I WILL! Check this place out! You won't regret it! Oh and they are closed on Sundays. I was recommended to go here by a friend because they had a good crawfish deal ($4.99/lb). It's located on Murphy and 90- small restaurant with limited parking. We first tried to go here on a Sunday.. we walked in, door was unlocked but then I noticed the hours said it was closed on Sunday. It was confusing because the lights were on and the door was unlocked, and then the owner sitting at a table just said "we're closed" and that was it. So pretty bad first impression, but we decided to try again. You can tell the place is really new or its the owners first time owning a business by the way they tend to their customers. However, the owners are really nice and you can tell they're trying hard. Likes: Crawfish was great!!! I have been to Boiling Crab twice already within the past month, and they had super small crawfish. I thought the size of the crawfish here was perfect, and the sauce they provide goes really well with it. The sauce seems like a mixture of thousand island, ranch, mayo, etc. Clean bathroom!! It's a single bathroom, but I was pleasantly surprised that it was clean and well tidied. They have a good $5 lunch special. Not sure what it includes but worth checking out. Dislikes: I don't like how the majority of the tables are too small when they are supposed to fit 4 people comfortably. We ordered the com thit nuong to go, and the rice was really mushy and there wasn't much flavor to the beef. It smelled really good but was disappointed when it came to actually eating it. Overall, it wasn't too bad of an experience. I would definitely come back for their amazing crawfish deal, especially since it was actually a good size and cooked/seasoned well. Really enjoyed my Bun Bo Hue here at Pho Tan Mai. The broth was flavorful and natural. There was a more than ample amount of meat. I asked for it spicy, and it did have some kick, but nothing major. The Bahn Mi here are above average, with delicious pork and all the other regular toppings. The location is a little off the beaten path, but not hard to find. The parking lot is a little rough in spots, but big enough. The decor is simple, nothing fancy here, but comfortable for grabbing a quick meal. I went here for my lunch break from school. The decor is simple. They have Asian themed statues and some Asian themed decor. One statue is a Chinese Terracotta soldier statue and the other one is a large panther like statue. Random pieces which was no specific then except that it was Asian. The setup is unique to there is a small waiting area in the front with the counter on the left with tables lined on the wall on the left and a whole room of tables in the back. I didn't explore in the back. I sat near the front door next to the register counter. I went around lunch time it was very slow for a Wednesday. I was the only one until two group of college students came in and they skill knew each other including the owners. I ordered the bun bo hue. They gave me the utensils and straw with red sauce on the wrapping. The sauce and meat had a lot of flavor and I like the seasoning. I would like more meat. The base soup had some spice. The vegetables were pretty fresh which I like. The like was sliced in half and I got one half of it. The bun bo hue is average to me but I like the fact the meat is seasoned good.
