Pho Ben is one of my favorite pho restaurants in the Houston area. It's located in Sugar Land rather than Little Saigon, inside a large strip center with plenty of parking, which makes it very convenient. The restaurant itself is spacious, with lots of tables, including high-top seating and benches along the walls. There are easily a few dozen tables, so it can accommodate a big crowd. Even though it gets busy--especially around lunchtime on weekends--I rarely see a long wait because of how large the dining area is. Pho Ben offers excellent value. A small bowl of pho is $11 and a large is $12, with at least 15-20 different combinations of meats to choose from, including rare steak, brisket, tendon, tripe, and meatballs. One nice touch is that if you order rare steak, you can request it on the side, so it arrives on a separate plate and you can add it to your hot broth yourself and cook it exactly how you like. Each bowl also comes with the usual fresh garnishes like bean sprouts, mint, basil, and jalapeño. Service is always friendly and attentive, with multiple servers checking on tables. The pho usually comes out in about 10 minutes, piping hot, and the broth is consistently flavorful. This is one of my go-to pho spots in the Houston area, and I highly recommend it if you're in or around Sugar Land. read more

This is my neighborhood pho place. Always busy, but I've never had to wait. I always ask for pho with extra greens and no sprouts. This location hears me! Doesn't give me a look like I'm stringing the wrong words together. This place is consistent in service, and ambiance, and reliably delicious. I did have to give up the salted lemonade soda though. I gotta get that wonderful drink somewhere else. They switched to or added some kind of sweetener that makes my body react as if it is sucralose. Sucralose physically wrecks me for 2-3 days. Tried the chicken pho for the first time after feeling sick the other day, and it really hit the spot. The broth had a lot of flavor, tasted fresh, and I honestly felt better the next day. We stopped by for a late breakfast/early lunch on a cold front day and ordered a couple of bowls of pho. As usual, service was very fast, someone greeted us right away, seated us quickly, and took our order almost immediately, as if we were regulars. Luckily, we already knew what we wanted. The two bowls of hot pho came out promptly. These days, the vegetable plate seems a bit light on bean sprouts, and I'm not sure if requesting extra is an option. There was, however, plenty of basil and cilantro, which I asked them to leave out due to an allergy. I still noticed slight traces of cilantro in my bowl and removed them, but it's something worth noting for those with allergies. Overall, the pho was hot and satisfying. The broth wasn't especially rich, but it was flavorful enough and consistent with what you'd expect for the Sugar Land area. this is one of those places i've been going to for years, basically grew up eating here, so it feels impossible to count how many times i've been. it's almost always busy, but the service is efficient and the food comes out super fast in big portions. i get their pho every single time; lots of meat and plenty of veggies. recently the broth has been on the lighter side though, so ive had to add more sriracha and hoisin to elevate it. i also love their lemongrass pork, chicken, or beef with rice, so fragrant and nicely grilled every time. the shrimp spring rolls are fresh and the peanut sauce is solid. the banh mi has a generous amount of meat and soft bread, though it's a bit bland. for dessert, the chè isn't too sweet, and the coconut is light and refreshing, which i really appreciate. their loyaltyprogram went from $10 for every $100 spent to $125, but with the economy nowadays its understandable. my main concern is that the quality seems to be declining bit by bit over the years, particularly in the richness of the broth. overall, it's a reliable, comforting spot i keep coming back to with great portions, quick service, and warm, familiar food. read more

This review is overdue, though we did share our feedback on the restaurant's website. It was busy when we dined late Saturday afternoon. We were seated right away, but the experience declined a bit afterward. We had to flag down our server to place our order for the grilled chicken spring rolls, bun bo hue, rotisserie chicken, and the dac biet banh mi. The spring rolls, bun bo hue, and chicken were all good, though we did have to ask for another utensil. The sandwich, however, wasn't toasted and didn't include pate, which was the main reason we ordered it. No one checked in on us during the meal, and we weren't sure how to close our tab until we watched the table next to us. I'm probably the last person to have visited this casual small chain restaurant in the Houston area, which sounds very similar to the other Pho Ben place in town. They have now surpassed the other and have six (6) locations. Inside, it is pretty large so you shouldn't have any problems finding a table. It was fairly busy the day I visited, but I think part of the reason they're busy is due to their affordable prices. I heard they were famous for their pork chop dish and their soups, but I was craving beef so I tried the shaking beef with rice dish. Anytime you can get filet mignon for $15 or less, take it. I also added an affogato which is served over Gelato and a nice wake me up drink. My dining companion tried that famous pork chop. Shaking beef - while they provide you with a mountain of food, the steak, which should be tender, was cooked well done and needless to say it was pretty chewy. Affogato - really good version of Vietnamese coffee Pork chop dish - I was also surprised to see they give you 2 whole pork chops here. The flavor / marinade is even better than the steak and its more tender of course I added a durian shake at the end of my meal and it was really good and priced fair just like most other dishes on their menu. Both dishes come with a bowl of their soup broth so you can try and see what their pho is like. Overall, this restaurant was really buzzing on a Saturday lunch so they are doing many things right here. We came here on a Saturday afternoon around 4pm and the place was PACKED. We were headed to a party afterwards but wanted to get some substance in. The server was nice. The beef Spring Rolls were fresh and delightful. As someone obsessed with them, Pho Ben has some of the best. The Peanut Sauce is also very nice and has the perfect consistency. As of right now, Pho Ben Sugarland is easily my favorite pho spot in the greater Houston area. There's something about how things are run here that makes every meal so consistently tasty. The noodles are always the exact perfect texture and effortlessly soak up the amazing broth. Speaking of the broth, let me drink this broth for the rest of my life instead of water, it's that good. The flavors of the broth are light but so savory, and keeps me keeping back again and again. The meats tie everything together, with cuts that seem to always be exactly how I want them to be: tender and delicious. The Bun Bo Hue and Banh Mi here are also nice when I want a change of pace but the Pho is what will always keep me coming back again and again and again. The interior is vibey (especially at night) and slightly modern but don't be fooled, Pho Ben is serving authentic and amazing Viet food. Pho Ben is on my top list of Vietnamese restaurants in the surrounding area. My go to order is the Chicken Pho with extra bean sprouts and jalapeños. For every visit, I order the chicken sandwhich (Banh Mi). The sandwich is very flavorful and the bun has a nice soft texture with a little crunch. I tried the large pho with eye of round steak, fatty brisket, soft tendon, and white beef tripe. I also got the vermicelli noodles with grilled pork and an egg roll. The food came out very fast. The pho broth was very good, they give you a ton of noodles and meat here. Out of all the pho places I've been to in Houston so far, I think this one had my favorite broth. My wife had come by and visited this place solo and had an amazing experience. She insisted we go try it out because she felt like it was better than the other Vietnamese restaurants we frequent in Midtown and Chinatown. The place was packed when we arrived, but they still managed to get us seated pretty quickly. We ordered several items like we normally do, with the standard plan to split the banh mi and the soup and get to sample a wider variety of food than we would if we were each ordering our own entree. Sadly, I really didn't get any of the vibe from what she'd explained to me on the drive over. The restaurant was clean and clearly very popular, but the food was far from spectacular. The bun bo hue was... forgettable. The banh mi was not the best, with a significant portion of the meat inside being mostly chewy fat. I'm wondering if they just saw two non-Vietnamese patrons and decided we weren't worth the effort? Service was decent, but it felt like we were an afterthought. At one point I had to go up to the counter to get something we were missing. My wife insists that we should try this place again, so we probably will. This is a hard one, because I had two radically different experiences here. The first time I came here by myself and ate by myself. I decided to be adventurous and ordered something I usually don't t Vietnamese restaurants, because I'm not sharing with my husband, muahaha. Alright, so the service is great. They took such good care of me. I don't know if they thought I was sad, lonely, or people eating by themselves makes them feel bad, or if it's just general customer service, but they were on top of their game. I got the best soup ever with the thick noodles and I was in heaven. The cabbage, the spicy flavors, the broth, oh and the meat was so soft, delicate, just pure perfection and eating the thick noodles with chopsticks, which I was terrible at, was fun. So I tell my husband..."We got to try this place out." And you know what? It was like the opposite. The food wasn't bad it was just okay. There was none of that mouth watering perfect tasty broth and combinations. Like everything was like, "Meh." The service was okay, they kind of just threw the soups on our table and left us alone. And compared to when I was there by myself which was a busier night, we were ignored. I'm not even sure how it was the same restaurant. So I figure, between a 4/5 experience the first time and a 2/3 experience the second, it's probably consistently at a 3. Good things that are consistent: It's always clean. The place is always lively. Bad things...well I would say the consistency. Because when they're rocking it, it's a solid 4/5. You should still try this place out, because unfortunately there are terrible pho restaurants out there. The service and food has gone downhill. They are understaffed, in my past few visits my order is always somehow messed up or they forget something. My most recent visit, they forgot my order and tried to say I never ordered it. Why would I sit in this restaurant and not order any food? Makes no sense. I had Bún Bò Huế, which was a really nice spicy beef and pork Vietnamese soup - technically not Pho, I suppose? But the last time I was here at Pho Ben and ordered this dish - I ordered it a second time because I am a spice addict - the very nice young Vietnamese girl offered me pig blood in my soup which I enthusiastically embraced. It was so chewy and iron-tasting and fantastic. I had it with a durian smoothie (look it up). Yes, I'm that hardcore. This time the waitress was I think a bit shy and slightly intimidated and she maybe made a mistake thinking I, not being Vietnamese, would not appreciate pig blood. Dear little lady: I have been eating pig blood since probably before even your own parents were born! Ha ha. I don't hold it against her at all. It was my fault for not asking. BTW I also had a "side" of banh mi bread, which was absolutely incredible - lighter than air. How is Pho Ben? It is great. Apparently our church lets out earlier than others or something like that, because when we arrived after Mass it was fairly empty. I was a little worried about them. But then it became incredibly packed and I breathed a sigh of relief. Sugarland is wonderfully diverse and can support many different world cuisines. So you know what I had. Two of the others had grilled pork banh mi after starting with egg rolls that they both liked very much. Banh mi has stiff competition and they said that although it was not the absolute best in the area, it was quite good. They found the vegetables not as good as for example Paris Banh Mi in terms of texture and abundance. They also had a small cup of broth as a side which particularly on this cold day was much appreciated and raved over. Final person in our party had a Pho with beef, pork, and meatballs and she loved it but had to take some home...because even a "small" is a generous portion! Criticism? Even when the place was mostly empty they took a long time to take our order. They seemed a bit disorganized. I wish the waiter had been a bit more engaged. I still will come here for sure because I don't have any other pho places that are close by to my family's home when I come to visit however, I had a poor experience last time I came. I had asked to switch a drink because the one I got tasted so artificial. I was met with this is real fruit juice and a very judging and rude tone. I know what real fruit juice is honey, and that was definitely concentrate not 100% real fruit juice. Pho Ben has been a staple in Sugar Land for many years now and it is not hard to see why. The food is consistently good, great location with ample parking, and they even have a rewards system! This flavor combination is hard to beat. I have also tried pho #25. Their broth is not too sweet and not too oily. With tons of seasoning, the noodles, broth, and meat go so well together.
