Back again to this place. Been eating at this and the original location since they opened. They're one of the original banh mi emporium in Houston. Since I've been trying the various banh mi locations in Texas. This is still the best and the price is great. The bread is crunchy and the meats/cold cuts are flavorful. NOTE: Food-wise, this review is solely based on their banh mis because that's the only thing I have ordered from them. Very casual/relaxed environment restaurant. Does not seem as busy as the Don's Cafe in Bellaire: never had to wait for a table and there's plenty of parking. The menu is not as extensive as other Vietnamese places but they have great lunch specials. Service really depends on the day/time and how busy it is because I think there's only 1-2 servers. When it's busy, you may have to (understandably) wait a bit to get your order/food. Sandwiches are affordable and almost always on point: bread crispy, vegetables are fresh, tasty and great portions. don't understand the low reviews at Don's - taste amazing, quick service, and cheap price! We got the grilled pork and grilled beef banh mi. I have been coming to Don's since I could remember but the bellaire location - this location is just like this bellaire location! We came on a saturday and found seats immediately. Server came and took our order and provided water. the Banh mi's were fresh and crisp and packed with meat and veggies! Truly a gem spot in sugarland/stafford. This is what a vietnamese Banh Mi should taste like. Hope Don's stays open forever!! I am happy to have found another weekday lunch spot. I've had banh mi from their location in Chinatown and was delighted to see that they had a Stafford location. The parking is spacious, it's near a Shipley's and a filipino bakery. I ordered a combo with a banh mi xiu mai, chai gio, and a for my drink I chose to have a can of pandan soy milk. You are given a number card upon ordering and surprisingly enough the waiter announces out your number in vietnamese, which is quite impressive for non viet speakers. I received my order in less than 10 minutes. Inside there's a number of patrons from nearby companies enjoying their lunch. I like how their vermicelli bowls, pho, and rice plates to choose from. The egg rolls I received were hefty, full of filling, served with nuoc cham and lettuce to wrap in. My banh mi was slightly toasted, crammed full of veggies, and the meatballs were tender and tasty. So this morning on my way to the junk yard I decided to get some breakfast before hitting the junk yard. Didn't know they had a don in Stafford. Stop by and got the don #1 grilled beef sandwich with an iced coffee. Bread was really crunchy and meat was on point. Gf got the #3 sandwich combo with Diet Coke. What a joke. Went in at 630 to grab a quick dinner and eat and they wouldn't let us come in to eat. They said it was to go only. Nowhere does it say this. The staff was rude and short. Change your hours if you dont want to stay open until the actual time you close. Also you should consider hiring staff that isn't in a hurry to shut down 30 mins early. Dont bother with this place. Sandwiches used to be fresh but now they just reheat sandwiches that are pre-made and throw the veggies in it. read more

How did I not know there was a second Don Cafe location?! I was in town and staying in the Sugar Land area and saw that this location was super close. I had high hopes that it would be just as good as the Bellaire location. I called in my order and was very surprised that there was just a couple of people dining in when I walked in. I guess I'm just used to the hustle and bustle of the other location. The banh mi here is just as good as the other location! I love the pate and creamy mayo in Don Cafe's sandwiches. It never disappoints! I tried the bo nuong (grilled beef) as well for the first time and it was also very good. The baguette is toasted to a light crisp and the veggies are super fresh. The BBQ pork sandwich was amazing the chicken pho was delicious and the portions are quite large.

They have the best Banh Mi in this area hands down!! The baguette is always crispy with tons of filling inside. We always order the combination and the grilled beef with pate because their pate is amazing. It is super smooth and creamy and rich and it's the perfect addition to your sandwich. Everything is priced reasonably too. Ooh and you must get the Vietnamese iced coffee! This drink is super robust with the strong and dark coffee taste. The coffee to milk ratio is always spot on. I feel like their spring rolls have gotten smaller over time. And sometimes the shrimps may have a slight odor. They could have been sitting outside for too long idk. I've been going to Don Cafe for lunch 2-3 times a month since they opened in Stafford and never disappointed! I usually get the Pho or Bun when eating in, but get the Banh Mi when getting take out. ALL are fantastic! ANYTHING with the grilled pork is great!! The pork is always flavored perfectly and grill just right. The Pho with Beef Eye of Round is my favorite Pho. Best Banh Mi is the grilled pork with pate. Very clean and organized restaurant with good service. The manager is always expediting food to make sure you can get in and out over your lunch hour. They also take orders for pickup, never ordered anything but Banh Mi for pickup, but it helps speed things up. read more

I'm an easy going person, rarely complain about anything. But when it comes to food. I DON'T WANT PEOPLE TOUCHING MY FOOD WITH THEIR BARE HANDS. Is this too much to ask during COVID and Flu season??? I went to this place today. I've been to this place a few times before. The Hispanic guy who's in charge of handling the sandwich station touched my bread with his bare hand. This guy normally just wears a glove on his left hand, his right hand never has glove on and he uses this hand to operate the cash register. So, he had just finished toasting the bread and hadn't put the meat in yet. I told him I saw him touching it with his bare hand. He refuses to get the new bread and got mad at me. He was talking back and forth with the girl that works there. In the end, they refused to toast 3 small loaves of plain bread. I demanded my refund. So they both came to the conclusion to tell me not to ever come in to this place anymore. SUCH RUDE ATTITUDE. I told them that's fine because I would NEVER step foot in such an insanitary place. The owner was sitting there, act like nothing's happening while his employee yells at a customer. The owner is incompetent. The next time you order your banhmi from here, pay attention to how he's handling your food. Because of 50 cents worth of bread, they just lost a customer and thousands of other customers who read my review. First time giving this place a try. I have to say that I'm a little disappointed. The establishment is clean, and I was pleased that it was a lot bigger than it looks from the outside. However, the service and the food left a lot to be desired. You have to spend at least $10 to use a credit/debit card. I ordered the Don Special Rice and a grilled beef banh mi. The rice was $7.25. The portion was smaller than most places that I go to. It also wasn't as rich and flavorful as what I'm used to. It was okay, but I just kept thinking about how I could've gotten better rice for cheaper somewhere else. The banh mi was $3.75 and delicious. The bread was toasted well, and the fillings were well-seasoned and meshed nicely together. This was my first Vietnamese sandwich, and I look forward to the many more I see in my future. I asked for the wifi password, and one of the employees told me that there was no wifi. That's weird because I definitely saw two wifi networks pop up on my phone. I expected one to be for guests, but alas. I ordered my food to go. Once I had already left, I realized that there was no soy sauce in the bag. The lady who was at the counter didn't ask if I wanted any soy sauce for the rice, so I assumed it would be inside the bag like at most places. Overall, it was an average experience. (No, make that a very definite, resounding YES, and I'm from OKC, and am freaking SURROUNDED by really great Bánh mì places!) Perfect baguettes each and every time -- flaky and crispy on the outside and soft and flavorful on the inside. Then usually comes the grilled chicken or slow cooked pork, if you like, but let me tell you about my personal favorite, the street vendor classic known as Đặc Biệt ("The Special"). It's essentially the whole dog and pony show, folks. Imagine a smearing of buttery, garlic-laden pork pâté and mild, super-thin slices of Vietnamese luncheon meats (e.g., soft, mortadella-like giò lụa sausage, crispy head cheese with plenty of delicious fat, and chewy, richly spiced pork shank that often sports a truly unearthly but singularly delectable pinkish/reddish rind). Expect a generous layer of real mayonnaise (homemade, no less) and plenty of pickled daikon, julienned carrots, sliced jalapeños, and (of course) the ubiquitous cilantro. (Don's never skimps on its banh mi's veggies, friend.) For extra flavor, ask for chili-garlic sauce and a splash of Maggi. (My mouth is watering as I type now.) Living in Sugar Land, I typically travel to Chinatown for my banh mi fix, but now I can travel to this much closer location. We walked in to find it extremely clean! Counter service with very friendly staff. I was amazed that the prices haven't gone up from Chinatown. $3.50 for a grilled pork banh mi. My husband and I shared 3 banh mi and 2 sodas for just under $13. That's crazy cheap. Not only cheap but extremely delicious! I wonder if they can keep their prices this low in their new location. We are absolutely going to be regulars at this location. As we sat there, we watched the kitchen staff meticulously clean and hose down the cooking equipment in the kitchen. They were thorough and I felt that the cleanliness level was different than what I've seen at Chinatown restaurants. It's much better here. The other entertainment while we ate was watching a Vietnamese movie with horrible subtitles. My husband was cracking up watching the movie. Fun Fun! The owner/manager was super nice and gave us a free Flan as she left. She just seemed so happy to have us there. They have been open 5 weeks and are giving a 10% discount until the end of January as a grand opening special. They are across the street from Dulles high school and behind the Shipley's. Currently, they are cash and check only, but I bet that changes as they get more set up. They are open 7 days a week, 9am - 8pm. They also mentioned delivery with a $15 minimum. read more

I worked in Sugarland area a few years back and found out there was a Don Cafe 2 on Dulles Ave. I've eaten at a lot of different Banh mi restaurants but none that compare to Don's. The bread is flaky, the pork is cooked and seasoned perfectly, the veggies are done right and best of all the buttery spread, it's not mayonnaise, is the best part. My mum bought home a banh mi from here and begged me to try it and I wasn't gonna refuse. On the first bite, I was hooked on Phonics good and delicious at the same dang time. This has become my go to Banh Mi Spot. It's so yummy. The bread is soft but nicely toasted, the meat is flavorful and a generous portion, the veggies are crisp and delicious. We decided to also try their shrimp fried rice which was also very tasty. The portion is very generous for the price. The restaurant is always clean and you can see the care they put into making sure everything is clean and orderly. I've never seen so much as a little mess in this restaurant. I've been coming here for years. Sorry that I have not written a review sooner. There banh mi sandwich is the best I ever had. I pretty much come here every Saturday morning when there open. When u buy 5 banh mi sandwich, you get 1 for free. We usually order the chicken grilled (ga nuong), pork grilled (thit nuong), meatball (xui mai), and special sandwich (cold cut) with the jalapenos on the side. The Hispanic guy that makes the sandwich knows my order. He is so nice every time I come in. He always take good care on my banh mi sandwich order. There spring roll is also the best. (no mint leaf in it). If I come in for lunch, for a sit down. I would order the shaking beef (com bo luc lac) or the rice hen dish. Customer service is always great here. This rating is for the chicken pho on the last visit. It was disappointing. I got the chicken pho, but didn't realize they used beef broth instead of chicken broth for the pho. I do not eat beef and pork. I told the waitress this, and she said I should let them know in advance, but she still changed it for me. The end result was an ok chicken pho that I didn't eat much of. There was few chicken slices in the pho, and the broth wasn't flavorful. It wasn't bad, but it's not flavorful either compared to other pho places. I had been at this Don's Cafe location quite a few times but never got around to write a review until now. My impression was that it was not as busy and hectic as the one on Bellaire. The place also looked clean. We arrived here on a Saturday prior to their opening hour of 9 AM so we were able to see how they started their operation. First the owner arrived then I saw workers piling into the restaurant. For kitchen staff, a group of them came in with produce and ingredients to prepare the food. As we seated we saw a worker spot-cleaned tables, chairs, and wood panels around the restaurant. We order two combo sandwiches. I chose the Don' cafe sandwich that came with iced coffee. The coffee was pre-made which was a little disappointing but good nonetheless. The sandwich had all sorts of meat in it. If you are not an adventurous person it's best to get a different sandwich. Having said that the sandwich was really good. Both of us loved the fact that they were generous with butter, pate and their seasoning. My wife BBQ pork sandwich combo came with a drink and a summer roll. Her sandwich was equally good, but the summer roll was just OK. The check was a buck under $20. My wife had half of her sandwich left to take home. The food and drink were alright. The service was ok; there was nothing to complain.
