Pho Star is minutes from my home. I would often buy to-go and pick up to eat in the comfort of my own home. Their Bun Thit Nuong with shrimps has always been my favorites. I typically would order this dish on the weekend and enjoy it at home. Another one of my favorite dish is their banh mi. If my lunch hours are restricted, their banh mi would come to the reduce. The taste alone is divine and the portions are large. It's so nice to have such a tasty Vietnamese restaurant just minutes from my home. There are many other great dishes to choose from as well, but my-go-to is their Bun Thit Nuong for sure. My friend couldn't decide what to eat so we decided to stop here and dine on a Sunday evening. We also ordered the mi quang, chicken stir fry noodle, vermicelli noodle with grilled lemongrass pork and shrimp, the grilled chop pork, grilled lemongrass pork and the shrimp rice dish. The rice plate was decent. The rice was too hard, seemed like it wasn't cooked all the way. The mi quang was good - would recommend! Gave a good amount of protein and noodles. Not our first trip, and for good reason. The food is excellent. On this trip, we had turmeric noodles and bun bo hue. The turmeric noodle dishes was cooked perfectly and they were more than generous with the chicken. The bun bo hue had a generous amount of beef and the spice level was just right. Salad rolls were wrapped tightly and tasted super good. Very fresh! The young man who served us was kind and made sure to ask about the quality of the food and if we needed anything else. Atmosphere is rather nice, as the high ceiling and decore really makes it feel warm and homey. Will continue to support this Vancouver gem. read more

Haven been born down the street from this restaurant. I have never gotten to try it. My parents do not try new things. So now at 31 years I checked this place out. As it is in between work and home. We stopped in and got: Pho Dac Biet - the broth had amazing favor. I am glad so checked it out as I love getting this every once in a while and the only other place I like with Pho is all the way on 162nd. He got the Pho Tai Nam Gau and he enjoyed it. I almost never see him finish his bowl but he did. We also got a plate to share Com Dac Biet - oh my gosh was this amazing. The building has always been misleading but that just makes it a best kept secret for the food. The inside was super clean. I would definitely feel comfortable eating there next time. The service was great also as the guy working the front was so understanding and friendly. He very much didn't make me feel uncomfortable as other places have made me feel before. There's only 2 pho places in Vancouver that I like and Pho Star is 1 of them. The staff is nice. The restaurant is clean. And the food is good. The pho, the bun bo hue and the mi quang are all good. I also like the chicken salad. We recently stopped in again at 7:30pm, thinking they closed at 9pm, but they were getting ready to close at 8pm. I told the waitress I would just order to go and she invited me to stay and eat. I always feel bad going into a restaurant when it's close to closing time but she was so nice and welcoming and told me pho is better to eat fresh and not to take it to-go. read more

I didn't have any expectations for this place, it was just conveniently located near the hospital. What a gem this place is. The first day I had the special beef stew and the Bo la lot, which is minced beef wrapped in lalot leaves. Both were amazingly flavorful and authentic tasting. The Bo lalot was like nothing else I've ever tried. I also got a chicken banh mi for someone and they loved it. The next day I went back and got the 5- spice duck soup and a Vietnamese cold cut banh mi. Both were excellent. Pho Star is a very good pho restaurant in Vancouver. One huge negative was that they picnic ware. Red solo cups, plastic forks, and disposable chopsticks. Very odd eating pho with standard sized chopsticks. The water here also tastes really off. I ordered a Diet Coke because I couldn't stand the taste of the water. The service was mediocre. They worked very fast but everyone seemed like they were miserable working there. I We had the salad rolls, pork egg rolls, crab pubs, and well as pho. The appetizers were all very good and they gave healthy portions of sauce. The pho was really good too. The meat was good quality and the broth was good; could have been more rich in flavor though. I've come to this restaurant to pick up banh mis and pho about a dozen times. It's all be pretty good, if not a bit overpriced. At this point, I don't think I'll continue going in the future. Today, I ordered 2 banh mis and asked for no mayonnaise (as I always have). In the past, the sandwiches would come out just as I ordered. When I arrived to pick up the order, the woman that greeted me told me that they accidentally made the sandwich with mayonnaise, so they were remaking it. No worries! A bit later, my food was ready and I brought it home. Once I opened up the sandwiches, to my surprise I found a glob of something that looked a lot like mayonnaise. I called the restaurant and was told that the glob was some other dairy-based cream. I'm lactose intolerant and because I didn't see any other ingredient listed on their menu that raised any red flags and the fact that I've had their banh mis many times before, I figured I didn't have to ask for any other modifications to the sandwiches. I politely asked for a refund and what I was told was that I'd be required to go back to the restaurant and return the food in order to receive a refund. Like..as if it was a TV or a sweater. I offered to send them photos, but for whatever reason (maybe they might suspect that I'm staging the photos..?), that's not good enough for them. So at the end of the day, I have sandwiches that I can't enjoy because they replaced an ingredient I can't have with another ingredient I can't have (and that I didn't know was going to appear in my sandwich). Another thing worth noting is that the woman I spoke with was saying that she doesn't like making sandwiches that have modifications like mine. I'm not sure what the process is for making banh mi sandwiches, but if it's anything like a sandwich, leaving out mayonnaise or any major ingredient shouldn't be that big of a deal. Perhaps I'm missing something..(aside from my money)? To their credit, the pho was decent. read more

Excellent pho/soup spot! They also have a variety of appetizers & other noodle & rice dishes. We stopped in for lunch on a Monday and they weren't busy. We shared an order of crispy rolls, which were tasty & full of protein & veggies (some places skimp on the protein in this type of roll, but not here!). I had the turmeric noodle soup & the Hubs had the wonton soup, and both were so delicious and full of the ingredients, we left stuffed (and again they did not skimp on the proteins). I only wish they offered a small & large option for their pho/soup because the portions are beyond generous and the two of us could have easily shared just one bowl and still left full (this is a general observation since many pho spots don't offer size/portion options). The inside was very clean, and simply decorated with real houseplants in each of the windowsills adding a nice touch. The only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars is due to the service. Our server was very nice, and the food came out quick, but he only checked in with us once shortly after the food came and then he never came back. I was debating on taking leftovers home but since he never came back we didn't. We were done eating and waited 10 minutes, but still nothing. We know he could see us from his perch at the register, and eventually the Hubs motioned to him to get his attention and asked if we could have the check. That's when he said we can just come up to the register when we're ready to pay, so it would have been nice if he had mentioned that earlier. All in all we will definitely be back for dine-in or carry out, and there are a number of other dishes on the menu we want to try. read more

I am on a quest for a good Vietnamese restaurant in the area. Unfortunately, however, I have not had any luck. I decided to try this place based on the the *very* favorable reviews, but my food turned out to be very mediocre, and the service was not good. I ordered the Salad Rolls, and the Pork and Shrimp Vermicelli. Twenty minutes later, I still hadn't gotten anything, and I noticed a table that was seated five minutes later than me had already gotten their food. I asked the waitress how it was coming along and she immediately says (without checking) that they were still working on it. After she checks, she immediately comes out with the Vermicelli, which makes me wonder how long it had been sitting on the counter. AFTER that she comes out with the salad rolls, which I had forgotten about by then. The Vermicelli itself was very mediocre - the BBQ Pork was not very tasty, and the Fish sauce was so bland, I could hardly taste it even after putting in an extra portion of it. The Salad Rolls also did not have a lot of flavor, and the peanut sauce was a goopy mess with no peanuts.
