Ok, I'll start off by saying the hype is a little too high based on my first experience here. I love Pho so of course I had to check out this new place close to home. I ordered the combination beef and meatballs, shrimp rolls and that ice tea. I did order it to go, just want to point that out. I always start by tasting the broth. This broth was not bad, nothing to write home about. So I then threw everything together in my special bowl that I use for Pho. I was pretty disappointed with the veggies. I couldn't use them because they were black and honestly appeared rotten. I would have given 3 stars but you lose one for allowing bad veggies out of the kitchen. The lime was pretty much dry so not much lime juice to add. It was overall average but a step down because I couldn't use all of the add ins. Also, get real take out chop sticks. The ones you give are no better than a couple of tooth picks, you can see them in the picture. Hopefully things will improve because I do like to have a go to Pho spot. read more

This place has a nice appealing look to it. Working in San Rafael, it's hard to find good food ( for me at least) Glad this place popped up on my local food search! After hearing great reviews from a friend whose food opinions I respect, I've eaten here twice since my initial review. Both times the pho broth was well balanced and very flavorful. Food was decent. However, if you have eaten PHO before, then you know that there are certain things missing from every dish. While tasty enough it's still missing something. They were training a bus boy, who I asked to box more than half of soup that I had left to take home for dinner, but he stacked a dirty bowl on top of it. Only tried the Chicken Vermicelli, and tbe pork spring rolls as a take out order. The spring rolls were good but the vermicelli bowl lacked cucumber, mint, crushed peanuts and needed more bean sprouts. It was mostly lettuce with a few carrot shreds and maybe 5 beans sprouts. Also the chicken while delicious as prepared, was not the usual grilled or BBQ chicken which is standard and really makes the dish. Service was excellent. I haven't tried much Vietnamese food in my life, but Pho was recommended to me as a great new restaurant by a friend so I needed to check it out. Arrived at about 7:00 pm on Thursday and was seated right away. The staff immediately provided menus, delivered waters, and checked in to see if anything was needed. We asked for recommendations and pho was definitely the most popular thing (makes sense with the name). We got the rare sliced beef, meatball, and brisket pho. The guy that was helping us, who I think is the owner, was super helpful and gave us some tips and how to add to the dish. Pho can be a little bland, so he recommended adding some sriracha, garnishes, lime, and chili sauce. It definitely brings the bowl of noodles to a next level, but I didn't love it (maybe I'm just not a pho person). We also ordered the crispy chicken wings and grilled pork. The crispy chicken wings were good with a light breading and the grilled pork had great flavor to it. Based on that, I am definitely interested in trying some of their other meat plates. Overall, the meal was enjoyable. The restaurant is in a shopping center so parking is really easy. The service was fantastic and the food came out really fast. The inside of the restaurant has nice decorations and there is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. I think it's worth trying if you can go with someone else and share a couple different options. This restaurant has only been open a week. But there's some glaring things going on that need improvement immediately. We even made sure to give our server our notes before we left. The egg rolls were a frozen block that the manager/owner chef in the kitchen was banging against the counter to get them "unstuck" before putting them in the deep fryer. Not cool. The loud banging was startling. Three egg rolls were delivered very unceremoniously and they were awful. We both ordered the beef Pho. It arrived looking nice enough. But there wasn't that unctuous depth of flavor nor that warm heat usually associated with such a broth. It tasted freshly made, not something labored over for days. No tendon or variety meats were included with the #1, which is really their #4. Points for very little bean sprouts! We inquired about the hot oil? They offered us sriracha or sweet Thai chili sauce instead. Oh no. Half the flavor profile was missing from that broth. I was counting on getting my sinuses cleaned out over this soup. I used one Kleenex the entire meal. The decor was nice enough. The bathrooms were spotless. The staff were eager to deliver excellent service and they were on point. The kitchen needs to up their game and this place shows great potential. We'll give it a month and revisit them. Stay tuned! read more

Finally there is fantastic Vietnamese food in Marin! No idea why it took this long but it's so exciting to see this place open. The other Vietnamese places in San Rafael are well...just ok, but not up to par but this place rocks! First time and ordered our standards -- Pho Tai, Bun Thit Nuong (vermicelli bowl), and the imperial rolls. All of them were top notch, SF quality dishes (in fact more like in-line with some of the better SF pho places), presentation and portions were awesome, and the owners running it were super cool. Top that off with the fact that the decor and environment is shockingly cool for a restaurant in a shopping center, and you've got yourself one great place to eat. Can't wait to return! read more

Large modern location, great wall paper, trendy red acrylic backed chairs, booth side was much comfortable. The food, yes, it is their first 6 months. Both chicken and beef broth need more flavor, they were like a light consumme. Seasoning on the pork was very light missing the SE Asian flavor intensity and char marks. Pho, the most synonymous of foods so uniquely Vietnamese. It's not just soup, it's flavor, its texture, it's delicious. I was excited to try the new Vietnamese restaurant in San Rafael. Its interior was inviting and modern, the service was warm and welcoming but sadly the pho was anything but authentic and totally lacked the complex flavor profile of what a classic broth delivers. Aside from the disappointing flavor it also was missing the traditional tripe and tendons which incidentally make pho taste so good. Was it bad? No. But it was definitely not great by any stretch and it felt that they were try to play it "safe" with their ingredients and flavors. Worried that the often squeamish American pallet would ask what's this in my soup and why is there so much flavor? Which in the end, turned a beautiful and complex meal into an ok noodle soup. read more

Since living in marin the past three years there's been lack of any Asian restaurants especially Vietnamese restaurants. I've now been here 3 times and this is now my go to place for pho. The portions are prefect and the quality of the pho is great. I Rarely write reviews but It's definitely a place that can be overlook because of the area it's in but the cleanliness and friendly of the staff will make a difference for anyone. My only add would be having a kids size since there are a lot of families in Marin county it will be nice. read more

I really like this place, it's so great not to have to go to SF for pho. I also really like the grilled beef rice plate. It's clean, nicely decorated, points for whoever picks the music (old school rap last time)...so good taste all around. I'd also like to especially shout out the guy with the long hair, whose name I shamefully forget right now but he's a really nice guy who's always quick and good about questions/substitutions. It's also pretty standard price for pho places but it's good and I don't have to deal with gas and parking on Clement St, which is worth it by itself. But if they added Bahn Mi to the menu, I wouldn't complain. read more

Excellent service and food. We love two other VN restaurants in downtown San Rafael, but this is our new favorite! Sometimes the busboys don't understand what we want (we were raised in Japan and the Philippines, respectively, and know how to speak to be understood by fellow Asians...), but hey, that's part of the charm. We always start with the shrimp appetizer and try different dishes with rice or noodles, not disappointed yet. Their VN iced coffee and Thai iced tea are worth trying, too. read more

Nice trendy interior. The food is dumbed down Vietnamese. Choices are limited. My impression from the server (owner?) is that this is a choice to appeal to the Marin crowd who aren't adventuresome. Did not enjoy it as much as i wanted to because they kept asking every 5 mins if I was done with my food so that they could clear the table ...."no I am not done, I am still eating" I kept telling them as I was having a conversation with my friend. I told the small girl in a polite "leave me alone" tone for the final time and I swear she threw a fit!! She literally had her hands held tightly in a ball as if she wanted to punch me. This is my family's favorite pho restaurant in Marin. Their vegan noodle soup is the best I have ever had. The broth is so flavorful, and it is packed with veggies and tofu. I crave it. Came here as a group of 8 with two kids. With the pretty interior and given how clean the place was, we all lowered down our expectation for food and expected it to be non-authentic. Really struggled whether to write a review at all for our recent meal at Pho. If a meal and service are truly bad, that's an easy decision to share that experience. In the same theme, if the food and service are stellar, write a review. In this case, the recent visit was neither. The newly opened space is very nice as others have commented. The folks that work there are super kind and eager to please. We both shared the shrimp fried spring rolls. Absolutely delicious. In addition, we had the Vermicelli Chicken bowls. While it's apparent the ingredients were both bountiful and fresh, based on my experience eating Vietnamese food both in SE Asia and in other cities with large Vietnamese populations, there was very little authenticity to the dish. The chicken, while fresh, seems to be steamed (?), or blanched (?) with little to no flavor versus being grilled and caramelized with soy, obligatory fish sauce, shallots, brown sugar, garlic, rice wine, etc. The bowl itself, other than the chicken consisted of vermicelli noodles, lots of lettuce, some sprouts...and I think that was it. Again, this is dramatically different than that of the dishes experienced elsewhere that contained, peanuts, scallions, carrots, lemongrass, lots and lots of fish sauce, mint, lime juice and cilantro to name a few critical ingredients. So. Like most everything in Marin, is this food intentionally 'dumbed down' for locals??? Perhaps. And if that's what works, more power to the owners. With that said, base on this one dish, this food was far from being authentic and having those distinct flavors that make Vietnamese food so truly fantastic. Won't return. read more
