Pho Real, a unique new addition to Indy's north side, provides tasty Vietnamese and Thai dishes in a casual, laid-back environment. Lunch specials offer petite portions of popular entrees with rice and choice of soup or salad for $8.99. Hungrier diners may wish to order the more robust dinner portions, with prices ranging up to $14.95. Regulars in the area of 96th and College will remember this location as the former Big Mike's Cafe. Located next to Payless Liquors in an otherwise sketchy-looking strip, the interior is clean and inviting, if a bit plain. Tables are mostly four-tops, but can easily be moved to accommodate larger parties. Chopsticks and soup spoons are available in table-top dispensers. When Pho Real first opened a few months ago, they experienced some growing pains. Wait times were lengthy and the dining room was understaffed (as some reviewers have pointed out). As of April 2017, however, they've found their footing. The kitchen speed has improved tremendously, and they've increased the waitstaff appropriately for the lunch crowd. Still, I prefer to avoid the noon rush and get seated by 11:40 or so. The attentive servers are super-friendly and knowledgeable. Comfortable with the selections, they are happy to recommend a dish if you're unfamiliar with Vietnamese cuisine. The menu layout needs improvement, and there are no descriptions for the lunch specials, but the servers are aptly prepared to answer any questions you have. Basil Stir Fry (Pud Bai Gaprow)... Simply outstanding. Flavorful at any heat level, there's plenty of sauce to sop up with your rice after the main course is gone. Like many of their dishes, the basil stir fry tends to be light on the meat, heavy on the vegetables (green pepper, celery and green beans). This is my favorite dish. Red Curry.. This bowl of saucy red heat has a pleasantly sweet undertone. I especially liked the saltiness, though some might find it too salty. If you're iffy on salt, ask your server if there's a low-sodium preparation. Medium heat (level 3 of 5) is just right for me. A close runner-up for favorite. Pho... served in an enormous bowl, there's plenty of noodles and broth for the hearty appetite. The broth is delicate but flavorful, and you can punch it up with jalapeño slices, basil leaves and bean sprouts from the plate served on the side. I could not differentiate between the "rare" beef and the "well done" beef, but my preference is the meatball Pho. The meatballs are not like what you might expect on spaghetti - these are tender and finely ground (think hot dog consistency) and don't fall apart in the hot broth. Curiously, Pho is not offered as a lunch special though it is available on the regular menu for about $9.99. 5 Stars for delicious food and friendly servers. read more

Although it is very new, this restaurant was delicious! Very authentic menu with many varieties of food to choose from, not just pho. Various sauces are available on table such as hoisin sauce and a pepper sauce. I had the fried tofu and pork bahn mi. Both were cooked very well and I practically inhaled it! read more

The food here is amazing! I recently moved from the bay area in California so one of the first things I have been doing is locating delicious food from different cultures here that I had a ton of access to back home. After trying three different pho places, coming here felt like coming home! My friend also agreed, though I am sure she would make only one request which is to include yellow curry. We actually mentioned it to the waitress and she mentioned it to her boss! I'm glad they care about the feedback of their patrons :) I will be back again and again! I love the flavor, the noodles were the right texture, the broth perfect, and I LOVE that the toppings for the soup come in smaller plates with perfectly portioned amounts so I don't feel like I am being wasteful. This place is fantastic!! Although I wish I would've went during lunch, the dinner menu is a little pricey for pho broth, but it was delicious! I got the chicken pho and was very pleased, and I was happy they had sriracha bottles at the table because it was so yummy when added to my pho. Read all of the reviews and everything made it sound like it was a great new place in town. Whole family went on a Friday night around 7. Only one worker on the entire floor, she was working the take out counter, serving tables and busing tables for a 15ish table restaurant. She couldn't keep up as the restaurant got completely full at one point. Only got one drink and no one got a refill, even of water. She also informed us that they had no alcohol as the shipment had never come and we overheard her tell several other tables this along with a lack of glasses/mugs due to washing. Seems like they were totally unprepared for dinner. The worst though was the food. We first got spring rolls and while they were very large, they only had 2 shrimp and some kind of solid meat paste thing but a vast majority was rice noodles with a piece or two of obviously unfresh lettuce. Entirely bland and not even close to being worth $5 apiece. My mother ordered the pad thai and it was ok but nothing special. Brother had fried rice with pork but there was very little meat in it and he said despite it being a "Thai Hot" spiciness level, it was bland. My other brother, myself, and my father all got the pho special. We've had pho once or twice before but this wasn't even close to being palatable. The beef strips tasted like styrofoam, the meatballs were anything but meat (honestly the worst "meatball" I've ever tasted in my life" and we were not even served the lime, cilantro, or jalapeno that was listed on the menu. We didn't finish any of the meals and left fairly quickly. Will not be returning and would be surprised if this restaurant lasts 6 months. read more

I really loved this place when it first opened. Then the front staff changed and both service and sanitation went left with them. I don't know the last time the condiment containers were cleaned or changed, but it has been a long time. I showed our waiter that one of the chili sauces was spoiled and fermenting. He swapped it with another table but didnt didn't throw it out. I had to tell the next table san not to use it. Absolutely unacceptable. It's too bad because the food is terrific. I was so excited that a new pho place was coming, only 3 mins from home! I have yet to dine-in but I have done carry out TWICE in the past 3 days. I have gotten the pho special. They give you more meat than expected, and the broth is clean and not greasy like some other places. I always ask for extra cilantro and lime wedges and they accommodate. I have also ordered the spring roll. I love it because it's fresh. I ask for extra peanut sauce and they accommodate that as well. Not bad for a new place. Have gone twice in the past week or so and am very impressed. First time through, I got the Pho to see how it compared with the other great Pho restaurants in town like Sandra's and Pho Tasty. I was excited to try this place since it was close to my job and it had Laotian foods (those seemed to be the best reviewed and I missed the Yelp event at Phan's). The first part of the meal was great (Thai iced tea, dumplings, and Tom yum-great spice and flavors) but it quickly went downhill from there. My husband and I split the Lao beef jerky and I ordered the Laotian chicken noodle soup and my husband ordered the pho w/rare beef. The issues seemed to be with the kitchen. The Lao beef jerky was so dried/ hard it was almost inedible (compared to other beef jerky). It was $10 for 4 small pieces of beef (picture posted). I requested medium heat in my Laotian chicken noodle soup. It was bland I had to put close to a tablespoon of Sriracha in it to even give it flavor the chicken was also really dry. My husband said his pho was nothing to write home about and they only gave one basil leaf in the accoutrements. There was a long gap between our appetizers and the food. The wait staff seemed bored like they were waiting for food to be ready. Overall, dinner was $51 and I feel like I sound have only spent $30 for the quality. read more

Excellent food and fast courteous service! I went with the Pad Thai to establish a baseline and it was excellent. I went with the medium hot and was worried that it might be too spicy. I am not able to handle extremely spicy foods and that was just the amount of heat for me. The Thai sweet tea was excellent (most other places I tried came out too sweet). The coconut soup (I do not have the proper name) was a perfect starter as it was light with great flavor. The person who accompanied me had the spring rolls and drunken noodles was impressed as well. I will be back to try other dishes on a menu that has a great selection to choose from. read more

Very disappointed. We have eaten at that restaurant over 15 times. Tonight the main dish they brought out was so terrible (loaded with soy sauce making the dish look like dark brown goop) that when we complained they REFUSED to bring out a different dish nor credit us the amount. It was Pad See Ew. In addition I ordered fried tofu for my Pho and instead brought out two appetizers we didn't order. When we informed them of their error they were not pleased. Pho Real is the real deal!!! It moved into a building that used to be one of my favorite places to eat until that restaurant closed down. Well Pho Real has made me almost glad the old restaurant closed down. Now I have a unique and delicious place to eat right down the road from me. I have loved everything I tasted. I started with the Bon Mi as I got hooked on these when I was in Minneapolis. This is the first Bon Mi I have had since then that comes even close. I tried Pho for the first time and was instantly hooked. I got the Pho special and the flavor profile of the food is out of this world. My wife got the Green Curry and it was fantastic. So I'm writing this review as I sit here waiting for anyone to come out to take my bill so I can leave. I've basically run out of Facebook and Instagram posts to go to, so I figured I would review my experience. I showed up at 11:20, expecting a pretty quick lunch (I mean, who eats lunch at 11:20?) The answer is not many people, yet I've just surpassed the one hour mark of being here. The service, as you've probably deduced by this point, is unbearably slow and there is no sort of organization. Also, despite my check being delivered 2 minutes after my entree, my card and bill sit at the end of the table waiting to be swooped up by one of said wait staff. The other rather interesting part of my dining experience is that I mistakenly chose to sit by the door, and thus have become one of the restaurant's newest door boys. That is, their door doesn't actually close, and so myself and three other guys have been taking turns getting up to close the door, as it's 40 degrees out today. We've had quite the bonding experience-- we're thinking of getting custom t-shirts. Now, to the positive: the food is actually really good. OH WAIT STOP, THEY TOOK MY CHECK PRAISE THE LORD. Okay, back to the food. I really enjoyed that they asked the level of spice I wanted with my Tom yum soup and pad Thai. I got the "hot" level of spice for both and really enjoyed them. It's also quite reasonably priced. Honestly, they would've gotten 5 stars if it weren't for the other bizzarre aspects of this visit.
