Places like this are hard to review. The food is not nearly as good as, say, Saigon on 38th St, but this place is in the gentrified north side. I had the pho special. The main problem is that the broth tastes like it's watered down. If you had this and pho from Saigon side-by-side, it would be a no-brainer which one is better. So why still four stars? Because a mediocre pho restaurant is a hell of a lot better than the frustratingly ubiquitous burger joints, brew pubs, pizza joints, and chains that plague the Indy area. As more places like this get established, the higher quality will come. People need to support places like Pho Real. read more

We did have a large party (7), but we noticed that several other tables with only 2-4 people were experiencing the same problems. 1) The pho was bland and contained raw onions. 2) We had to fetch chopsticks and soup spoons for ourselves because the server never brought any to the table. 3) They were out of Bahn Mi bread. 4) In its entirety, the meal took nearly 2 hours, and not because we were taking our sweet time ordering and eating. I've driven by this place SO MANY TIMES! I'm so glad I let my kid chose where to have dinner on our Friday evening out, because we finally stopped by. Came here on a Friday evening and we were the only ones dining in. I've been to the business that was open at the same place before, Big Mikes, so I was eager to try it. It's a pleasant surprise to find such a unique restaurant in Northern Indy. For appetizers, we ordered the chicken satay and chicken wings. They were both amazing. The chicken say came with four skewers and had a wonderful peanut sauce that you could use, though I had it plain and still loved it. The chicken wings were to die for. They had this delicious "special sauce" that had a touch of spice. The sauce can stick to your fingers, so make sure you order extra napkins. For the main course, I ordered drunken noodles. You can choose how spicy you want it. Be careful! A three is spicy enough, and anything beyond is dangerous territory. It's superb though. The dessert selections are great too. During the couple months I was interning in Indianapolis, I came here for lunch nearly everyday. That simply sums up my wonderful overall experience. Nana was primarily my server and she did a great job from making recommendations to having regular chats. She certainly made an influence in my overall experience and decision to dine here nearly everyday. The food is also amazing ranging from egg rolls to pho to thom khem (I basically tried the entire menu). Don't forget about the Thai iced tea and bubble tea! I'm pissed! Asked the waitress if the Laos Beef Jerky dinner plate was decent size and her response was, 'Yes, it's Plenty'. It was total disappointment. My friend who was with me got a dish that was horrible and when told the wait staff and asked for little more rice, she charged him $2.00. If you are out of towners and thinking this place got decent review and thinking about going, please don't. $10 for scoop of rice, 4-5 strips of beef jerky isn't worth it. I could of done that by getting there $2 rice, went to a gas station got a bag of jerky and it would of been more fulfilling meal and I would of been better fed. This place is a quaint little gem! I ordered the pad Thai with beef and it's THE BEST pad Thai I've tasted yet! I had to literally stop myself because it was SO GOOD I wanted to keep eating it! My husband got the pho rare beef and he said it was good and he liked it. The only complaint I had was I ordered a sweet Thai ice tea and it was $2.50 a glass. No problem there. The problem I had was it was half full and she offered to top it off and then charged me another $2.50 for the half glass to fill it up. That's the only reason I didn't give a 5 star review. Extremely well seasoned, generous portions, just stellar. Home run..the Thai Milk Tea. WOW. That stuff is amazing. I am so frustrated with this place; I really didn't want to knock them AGAIN. We went for lunch (which I knew was a struggle for this place and going to be busy) but I planned for it. We arrived at 11:35. We didn't receive our food until 12:52 and we all had meetings at 1. So they had to put all our food (only 4 of us) in to-go containers and we didn't get to eat. This isn't the first time the food out of the kitchen was slow. What really got me this time was the fact the waitress never checked on our drinks, not once until I got her attention at the 45 minutes mark (again with no food). And the worst part, people who sat down much later than us received their food before us. Now the Pho I get, its broth in a bowl. But others with noodle and rice dishes also who sat down after us got there food prior to us (a lot earlier, as in they were done eating and we were still waiting). I just can't recommend this place anymore, I want to so much. When my meeting ended I re-heated my food (since it I couldn't eat it at the restaurant because I had to get back like a normal adult to a meeting and lunch shouldn't take 1 1/2 hours) it was delicious. And those with me also loved it (who also had to leave after 1 1/2 hours). The waitress was polite enough about it and didn't charge for the dumplings. And said 'I hope you come back and it's faster next time'. Unfortunately, this is my second review for them, the first covered the first couple of chances I gave them. The lovely Yelp interns introduced me to pho here during Phobruary. The vegetarian pho was incredibly fragrant - I spent half the meal wanting to just sit and smell it. This was my third time at Pho Real. I'm a big fan of their soft spring rolls, so I started my meal with one of those and on this visit I actually tried pho for the very first time. They have several varieties and I had the pho chicken. It was delicious - and included a nice serving of fresh vegetables to add when the pho was brought to the table. The highlight of the add ins was, of course, the Thai basil. So good! Each time I have been here the food has been amazing. Yes, the service can be a little slow at times, but it's a small price to pay for fresh, made to order food at a locally owned restaurant. The food was AMAZING! But the customer service skills were horrible. My boss, coworkers, and I ordered food from here through doordash and the order got canceled because doordash stated the restaurant told them they were closed and were no longer taking orders. I called in to see if they delivered and they didn't, but luckily they did deliver our food because of all the trouble we went through but was extremely rude the entire time. I was hung up on at least 4 times while speaking to them, I called and ask to speak to a manager and she got on the phone but handed the phone to someone else without stating so. The person taking my order was handling other customers while on the phone with me and never apologized for it. Whoever dropped our food off was rude and didn't stay so we can sign the receipt or give her the tip. She stated "she was busy and had to go." Like I understand you guys were busy, but this does not mean anything when it comes to customer service and making your customers happy. You totally sucked at doing that, I really hope you guys get it together because your food is too good to be having bad attitudes. If you're looking for a safe place to try pho for first the time this would be a good place. The pho is a pretty run of the mill, by that I mean there's nothing about it that really would separate or distinguish it from anywhere else. They have a good amount of different chicken and beef options as well as a veggie option. While I did not order the spring rolls the table next to me did and they looked pretty good. I will caution the would be visitor to make sure you leave enough time. My girlfriend and I went on my lunch break and an hour was not enough time. They could probably use to wash some of the table side condiments but overall the meal was filling and satisfying. On the plus side there was definitely enough for leftovers! read more
