    Grilled Beef Banh Mi

After a long drive from NorCal and immediately going into a full day at Legoland, it was safe to say we all needed something comforting and delicious. A quick search on Yelp gave me a few decent options but Pho Oceanside won because they were opened later than the other businesses. Our party of 3 arrived at 7:45pm on a Friday night to a pretty quiet restaurant. There were only 2 other parties dining- one being a table of about 8-9 guests. The staff let us know we could pick our own seats and provided us with menus. The offerings here are very typically of what you would expect to find at a Vietnamese restaurant. Kudos for the vegetarian options for those non-carnivorous eaters. Dinner consisted of: *P14. RARE STEAK, FLANK, TENDON & TRIPE PHO (TÁI, NAM, GÂN, SÁCH) *L6. SEAFOOD (MÌ XÀO HẢI SẢN) Calamari, shrimp & fish ball *VIETNAMESE SANDWICH- GRILLED PORK [Cucumber, pickled carrot & daikon, onions, cilantro] So this is where the visit took a dive. The one male staff member cane by with a plate of veggies for the pho. What was provided had to be the worst portion and quality I had ever received. There was only one... YES, ONE!! sprig of basil and the basil was limp, crusty, and honestly just SAD!!! I was honestly ready to throw in the towel and mentally prepare myself for a poopy meal ahead. Thankfully, my guy spoke up and made a request with the gentleman in charge- he came out with an abundance of fresh thai basil. Food was surprisingly pretty good. My daughter enjoyed her seafood chow mein. The pho was alright but the broth could have been a bit more flavorful. The banh mi was my favorite of the night and i totally didn't see that coming. The sandwich wasn't aesthetically pretty on the eyes but the pork marinade was delicious. The cuts of meat were tender and the bread was soft yet crunch in all the right places. 4 stars overall. My only bit of advice is providing patrons with fresh, crisp herbs if you are going to skimp it down to 1 sprig per person.

My go-to pho spot since the early 2000s. The broth is still amazing, and you can tell why this place built such a loyal following over the years. That said, it's also noticeable that times are affecting portion sizes and some of the ingredient quality compared to what this place used to be. Unfortunately, the bigger issue now is the service. On multiple recent visits -- both dine-in and pickup -- the wait staff has mostly been gathered around the bar area on their phones or watching TV instead of checking on tables. During this visit, I eventually had to get up myself just to ask for water. After experiencing this on two separate occasions, I think I'm officially on the hunt for a new pho spot here in Oside after many years of loyalty. It's disappointing because this used to be one of my favorite comfort food locations. But between the unprofessional service, drop in food quality, and an increasingly unfavorable dining experience, I won't be returning.

Chicken Pho with rice noodles and broth

I had such a taste for Pho and I wanted to cozy up and watch the ocean and sunset from my resort, and I got this delivered. Wow. The chicken was very fresh, sprouts, basil and broth. It was some of the best I've ever had when I travel. Thank you PhOceanside!

Came here on a whim. Service is always super nice here. Bathroom was very clean which I always appreciate The pho here isn't to die for but it does it's job. It's not awful at all but it just isn't have the depth of flavor that I love in pho. The spring rolls were good and I love how peaceful and quiet it is in here

I judge pho restaurants based on the generosity of meat and quality of broth. This place meets both requirements. This is a very typical pho restaurant with fast service and comfortable booths.

Close to legoland, yummy, clean bathrooms, very clear broth. Highlight was the chili oil:) a few items were forgotten but overall a positive experience. I wouldn't say it's my favorite pho but for finding a pho spot on the way, out of town, it' was a good choice:)

Banh Xeo my wife like this a lot
    Michael G.

My wife wanted her BANH XEO again. It's her favorite Vietnamese food . Its a Vietnamese Crepe stuffed with Shrimps , pork , bean sprouts and other vegetables . We were already driving back home from Los Angeles when she asked for Banh Xeo, and we were already in San Diego when she suddenly craved it. Banh Xeo is not always available in a Vietnamese restaurant here in San Diego, but gladly, there's one that I found in PHO OCEANSIDE I had the House Special Pho, which has a delicious broth and good portions of meat. The Fried rice was so Flavorful and packed with meat that was also nicely seasoned. Their Banh Xeo, my wife likes it. She said that they kind of burnt the outside a bit, but the meat and shrimp and taste, all in all, make up for it. Parking was okay, plenty of tables inside, staffs are attentive.

It does come with 4 hefty fresh rolls! It was also nice of them to give us two separate peanut sauce, dishes-very considerate!

I hadn't been in YEARS. The broth is still as flavorful as I can remember! Luckily, we got there around 630ish (PM), because not too long after, there was someone coming in every 2 to 3 minutes until it was packed-this place is popular! Anyway, when we came in, we were told to just pick a seat anywhere we wanted. There are plenty of tables put together (family style) and once seated we were able to order right away. Like I said, after we came in, it started getting a little busy so the wait for our food was a little longer than I had expected (but not too bad, maybe about 10 minutes). However, we did order some spring rolls for appetizers and those came out right away..... later, when the broth came out it was nice and hot! Everything was delicious, the beef brisket and flank steak were flavorful on their own within the broth and nice and tender. Of course, the broth, like I said earlier was very flavorful and that's definitely what you want to expect eating pho. All of the wait staff were great, cheerful and happy/attentive. We'll definitely be back, as this is definitely our go to for Oceanside pho in this area.

They ignore your to go calls on slow weekdays!
    Lauren W.

Would not return. Plain and simple. Here's why ... Called this place for take out on a weekday evening. They didn't answer and apparently shut off their uber eats delivery option. Okay ... no problem -ish. Decided to drive to the location knowing they might be closed since they weren't answering, only to find a restaurant filled with 3-4 tables and very much open. We wanted pho so bad that we took the risk and were happy to see them open, wondering why they weren't answer their phones or taking to go orders online. I placed my order at the counter and immediately was turned off. First and foremost, MANY MANY MANY pho places allow you to skip the card heavy noodles and instead throw in a couple extra veggies. Not this place! The second I told them we have gluten and carb sensitivities, asked for maybe a few extra veggies (would have even been fine paying an up charge), the Asian man said, "NO!" right away. Okay, cheap skate!!! Then, what shocked me most was the customer service. The restaurant was literally empty, so I asked my wife to call in again to see what they did! I witnessed that same rude Asian man proceed to pick up the phone and hang up. He would pick up in front of customers and pretend he couldn't hear them, then hang up. To ensure my suspicions were accurate, I had my wife call MULTIPLE times while I was waiting inside witnessing it all unfold. Now, I understand if your restaurant is, "poppin," and you physically cannot handle the influx of to go orders, but that was absolutely not the case here. My wife would update me and say, "I'm calling now," only for me to physically see the man pick up and hang up. This happened several times (call log photos to prove it pictured here). What's odd is that the food came out SOOOO fast that it didn't even make sense why they weren't taking to go orders. Now, the biggest sadness was the pho itself. As a pho girlie, I've had my fair share of great pho. This place just wasn't it. Normally, I cannot finish my pho portion for other places and save some for later. Here, I got the seafood pho and finished it in one sitting!!! Like what?? I've never done that in my life. The take out container was about 75-80% full with lots of room on top. This isn't a coffee where I needed room for creamer. This was the bulk of what I was paying for. Furthermore, the broth was extremely bland and lacked seasoning / flavor. Sort of like "gas station pho" for lack of better words. You know when you get sushi from the grocery store versus sushi from an actual restaurant?! This was that same type of experience. Surprisingly not authentic whatsoever. I should not have been surprised though, as usually a heavy Asian populous inside any restaurant indicates great food. This place was full of white washed people, not an Asian person in sight. As a non-white person myself, this should have tipped me off right away. Overall I will NOT be back and I do not recommend this place. You'll be hungry, will have paid too much, and the flavors aren't even worth it. Not to mention the customer service. Yikes all around! Save yourself the trouble, go elsewhere!

Chow fun no soy sauce oyster sauce instead.
    Veronica M.

I came here with family and it's a new place. We wanted a sit down restaurant which was nice. Very clean and I liked how you could see the kitchen from where we sat. I got the beef chow fun it was very high reviewed. No soy sauce they changed to oyster sauce which was nice. They accommodate well we had an onion and cilantro allergy which they made sure was served separately. Also got the beef kalbi with rice. Some egg rolls and rice rolls. Egg rolls were really good and I can't speak for the rice pork shrimp roll but it was very well enjoyed. Lots of orders because we had a large group and they were very nice. Treated us well! Very great with to go boxes per person. Very impressive! I usually take pictures but never really post but everyone in there reviews here were so I just had to.

The basil had black spots and the Jalapeño was SLIMY.

I am really disappointed. First off, I LOVE Pho. I even know how to cook it myself. When I go out to eat it, I usually speak with the family members that cook and prepare it and I can usually identify what ingredients are in their pho from the flavor of the broth. That said, this place came HIGHLY recommended. I went in and ordered what I always order at any Pho restaurant for the first time. I specifically asked for extra jalapeño and Sriracha sauce bc I like it so spicy that the broth turns red. Mike (at least that what I think he called himself when I asked his name) even asked me if I knew how to eat Pho, to which I replied that I could eat Pho everyday because I love it so much. When I lived in NorCal I would order it almost everyday for lunch and then go pick it up. The owners daughter and I became friends and she even gave me a bottle of Vietnamese Massage oil for injuries which is like gold in the Vietnamese culture. (I still have it and use it very seldomly because it's so good and when you use it, you refill it with vodka, but it's never as potent as that original steep) There were 3 slices of Jalapeño and they were all SLIMY and the basil had BLACK spots. The baggies they prepared them in with the mung bean sprouts, basil and lime (only 1 slice) had obviously been prepared days earlier and had gone bad in the fridge. The lime itself was very brown around the edges. DISGUSTING. I am SO DISAPPOINTED, i was looking forward to one of my all times favorite meals and by the time i got back it was just before 9pm which is their closing time and I did not get a chance to eat the dinner I had looked forward to. I even tried calling several times, no one picked up. I don't think I will ever go back because NO ONE likes to eat Rotten food. So BUMMED!!!!! They not only did not give me the fixings I asked for, they gave me bad food. I had asked for "TONs of Sriracha packets and they had 1 in the bag and when I asked how many were there he didn't answer and I asked for more and it was like pulling teeth to get even a few more. SAD that they are so stingy that it gets in the way of enjoying the meal. Eat at your own risk. Pictures included for those who want to see.

    Lemongrass chicken
    Sue H.

Lunch with hubby who has never tried Vietnamese cuisine before. We both ordered the lemon grass chicken. It turns out to be an enormous pile of dark chicken meat with red and green peppers and onions on a sizzling skillet, much like the shaken beef dish. The lemongrass is shaved into long chewy strings, making it difficult to eat. The flavor is good, the rice is plentiful. The veggies are crunchy. I missed the side salad often served with this dish at many similar restaurants, and the fish sauce vinaigrette. We had leftovers which fed me twice again, so portions are generous. Service was lacking, didn't really seem to want to come to the table to take our order. Pay at cashier at the end.

    Jonathan K.

Came here for some pho and it totally hit the spot! Service was super quick, which I always appreciate. I got the beef rib pho and it was better than I expected. The meat was tender and fall-off-the-bone good. The broth came out steaming hot and full of flavor, exactly what you want on a cold or rainy day. Definitely a solid spot if you're craving pho!

Lately, I've been searching for a new go-to pho spot, and this place is definitely climbing back up my list. The staff was professional and attentive, and the restaurant itself was very clean. The dining room, bathrooms, tables, and sauce stations were all well maintained. I also appreciated the hand sanitizer available at every table small detail, but a nice touch. I ordered the regular pho for about $15 and really enjoyed the broth. The meats were tender and flavorful, especially the brisket and tripe. Portion sizes definitely seem smaller compared to the oversized bowls many spots used to serve years ago, but honestly it works well if you're trying to avoid overdoing it. My son ordered the grilled pork chops with rice. The flavor was good, especially paired with the fish sauce, though the pork chops could have been a little hotter and had more of that grilled flavor. Parking can sometimes be tricky depending on the time of day, but today it wasn't an issue at all. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and especially the broth. Pho House is definitely becoming one of my preferred pho spots in Oceanside again.

We each ordered a different dish, and of course, I ordered the beef pho. It was kind of a gamble. I immediately regretted it as soon as I placed the order, fearing it wouldn't be up to my standards--especially since I'm a chef and used to live in an area with a very high Vietnamese population with many well known pho restaurants. When the pho came out, it only took a few sips for me to realize I was wrong to have prejudged this restaurant. The broth was a little lighter than at some other pho restaurants; however, I could taste all the hidden ingredients like star anise, ginger, and onions. The meat was well-cooked, and everything tasted fresh. My friend ordered bò kho and bò lúc lắc, while his sister had the rare beef pho. They both finished their plates and bowls to the last drop. The restaurant is clean and the service is excellent. If you are in the area and looking for an authentic Vietnamese restaurant, look no further--please check out this spot!
