Ocean Thai Cuisine - 3 stars Friendly welcome right when we walked in and we were seated right away on a Wednesday with no wait. The servers were attentive and checked on us a few times, which was nice. The store looked clean and well kept not loud at all. We started with an appetizer that included veggie rolls. Those were generously filled, though not really my thing (vegetarians would probably love them). The rest of the appetizer was tasty. For the main I ordered a steak dish. It came on a bed of vegetables with the spicy sauce and nothing else--no rice. The flavor wasn't bad, but the steak itself was only lukewarm, almost like it had been sitting ready for a while. That temperature really threw me off and was the weakest part of the meal. The highlight (and honestly the reason I came) was the mango sticky rice. That was excellent and lived up to expectations. Overall a solid but not outstanding experience. Service and the dessert carried it, but the lukewarm steak held it back for me. I'd be open to trying a few other dishes next time. read more

Very Good Thai Food! The staff were very friendly & accomodating to our group I only gave 4 stars because my pad thai was unusually sour (?) and the chicken was dry. However, that was the only disappointment at our table. 1 person in our group had pork rib & loved it, another had spring rolls and said they were exceptional with the peanut sauce, and the chicken wings were delicious. My bf and I have gone and gotten it twice within the last two weeks. Red curry and their lunch specials are always tasty as well. We went in on Sunday right around noon. Lots of parking in the strip mall parking lot - though it can be busy at the intersections. The restaurant is small but has nice decorations and is cozy. We were greeted immediately and seated in a 4 person booth on the wall. They have single men & women's bathrooms. They brought us waters with an without ice by request which we loved and refilled when low. We ordered different pad thais, pad see ew & chow mein with pork & chicken. All had plenty of add ins - it wasn't all noodles. Delicious, filling & pretty presentation. You can pay at your table because they have a hand held credit card machine like you get in Europe. I think the star average on this place should be higher because some of the one star reviews seem unbelievable. If you want Thai, give them a try! read more

My son, daughter-in-love and 23 month old grandson went for lunch. The staff (I forgot their names) were friendly and attentive. My grandson caught their attention and they playfully interacted with him. It was very sweet. We ordered several items and everything was delicious. My grandson is allergic to dairy and they made a mistake on one food item for him and quickly corrected it before he ate. We will definitely be going back., Nice inviting establishment. What a great place to eat! We went there tonight and it was absolutely delicious! Their menu is very good with a large variety of traditional Thai dishes. We began with the spring rolls (shrimp) and calamari. The spring rolls were absolutely delicious, but the peanut sauce is what really steals that show. We also had the calamari and although I enjoyed the sauce, it was a little chewy. The batter however, was light and well seasoned. For dinner we had the pad Thai with chicken and the Thai spare rib with jasmine rice. They were tender, and almost fell off the bone. He ordered number seven spice and it was very spicy, which was what he expected. I had the pad Thai six spice and it was really well presented. There was a plenty of chicken. We all enjoyed our entrées very much. Our servers were Nina and Rathipa and they made our visit special with excellent service. Their iced tea was delicious. The restaurant is not fancy but it's comfortable. I did notice they sell wine and beer, but I did not have any. We also were so full we did not order dessert. We brought home so much food! This has been our go-to Thai "fix" for over five years, but it seems to have recently changed ownership and, as a result, lost its quality and flavor. Sadly, both of my "go-to" meals went off the rails. The Tom Kha soup basically tasted like it had been stretched beyond recognition by dumping in cans of coconut milk to make it go further. Without adding more of the other ingredients that make this soup its usual heavenly elixir, it was beyond gross. Needless to say, I threw it out after the few bites I had. Also got the Phad Ga-Prao which I didn't finish as it just tasted flat and lacked its usual complexity. I was so stunned by the change that I dropped in when I was in the area to ask if they had changed ownership, and the answer was yes. I understand having an off day and/or taking some time to get your groove, but we won't be going back after such a disappointment. read more

We were a group of 5, and they were quite busy so it took a little while to have a booth clear up and for us to get seated. We didn't know until later, but parties of 5 or more get charged 20% gratuity automatically on the check. We tried many dishes, the food coming one by one as soon as they were ready. The papaya salad and fried tofu spring rolls were incredibly fresh. The chinese hot and sour soup was tangy and great to warm up with. The panang chicken curry and spicy chicken fried rice were really good paired together. The mixed vegetables stir fry was an unexpected hit with everyone on the table - the sauce was sweet and savory. Overall, it was a good experience that had us leaving satisfied. My favorite restaurant! Every time I visit Carlsbad / Oceanside it's a must visit to this charming little place. One would never guess from the outside tiny sign and long line of shopping stores that such an enchanting taste experience awaits behind the door. I am obsessed with the Yellow Curry Chicken, Egg Fried Rice, my friend loves the Tom Yum soup, and we always get the Chicken Satay and Shrimp Batons appetizers. We always get our food mild - Spicy level 2. They are accurate with spicing your preference 1-10. When we lived in Carlsbad we would eat here once a week. It is like home away from home, comforting, delicious consistent recipes, friendly family service, still the same great experience for literally almost 20 years. This special little restaurant is small and can fill up fast. It seems like the tables are close together but once you start eating you are magically transported in your mind by such soothingly beautiful tastes of Thailand, and everyone is so happy to be there, it is like dining among friends. Had a solid meal from Ocean Thai! We ordered over the phone and grabbed takeout, which was ready within 15 minutes of ordering. It seemed fairly busy inside around 6pm on a weekend and is a nice space with some tables and a few booths. The chicken satay was pounded very thin which I always love, and it was super flavorful. The peanut dipping sauce was super silky and had a great nutty taste. The chicken fried rice was also quite good, but I wish it had a sauce to add a bit more flavor. read more

Surprised I haven't reviewed Ocean before. They used to be really good and I've been ordering from and eating here for years. We were actually quite a few miles south of Ocean Thai and I decided I'd drive up north because "I know this place is good." Man this was disappointing. We ordered a Panang curry and a Tom Yum. The curry was just really weak and bland. A Panang should be a richer more intense version of a red curry, no? This was almost indistinguishable from a VERY weak red curry. Visually you wouldn't be able to tell that it wasn't a red. Normally I'd just excuse this and say that dish was a miss. However, the Tom Yum was equally as disappointing! It just tasted like salty broth; not a hint of lemongrass, no icy galangal, hardly spicy at all. We thought maybe we had covid and lost our sense of taste. I wish I were being dramatic. I actually just grabbed a few things from my fridge and tasted them just now to make sure that's not the case. Like maybe their customer-base has shifted towards really *ahem* spice sensitive folks? Maybe the kitchen was having a bad night? I can't abandon Ocean Thai for one bad experience because of so many good ones I've had. I'll come back once to make sure but I fear that they've fallen off. The front of the house is great here. They're super sweet and attentive. It's the kitchen that seems to need help. Again, I'll come back and update my review. If this were my first time, it would be 2 stars but I've eaten here A LOT and it's never been this bland. read more

Staff were gracious and courteous despite how slammed they were. Food came out relatively fast considering how busy they were and short staffed too. We really enjoyed everything we ordered. We called in our order and door dash delivered. The main entrée was ok. I got Pad Thai. Mine was lacking some flavor the way I am used to. However, the pork was so tender! To my surprise I heard a crunch. It was a tiny piece of Egg shell. Lol, have no clue where that came from. My favorite of the takeout dinner was the Potstickers!! It's one of the best I've ever had.
