(Cash only) The service was good and the food came out faster than I expected. I got the Vietnamese coffee and it wasn't too sweet, plus they didn't overload it with ice, which I liked. For mains, we ordered the Pho Tai Bo Vien with rare steak and meatballs, and the Bun Rieu. If I'm being honest, something felt different with the flavor of both dishes than what I'm used to, and the garnishes didn't appear to be too fresh so we held off on adding much. This place is definitely easy to miss but I am glad I was able to spot it while driving past the restaurant. I stopped in on Saturday morning and the place was empty so I was able to get assisted right away. Definitely seems like a family business with the older gentleman and his wife I believe. The viet iced coffee was really good that I didn't snap a picture before drinking half of it. The bbq pork banh mi was decent, no complaints but not a hit for me. With the restroom being located inside by going past the kitchen, I was able to look around and see that it was really clean and well kept. The pad thai $12.95 was good. It sounded interesting to order a Thai dish at a Vietnamese restaurant. The portion was small and left me wanting. It came with a side of clear soup. There was one cube of pork blood that was soft and smooth, and not too metallic-y tasting. The pork was missing. The broth was my least fav component...it lacked depth and complexity, and tasted like msg water. Maybe because it was an hour before closing? The accompanying saté sauce (lemongrass chili oil) really helped to give it a punch of flavor and heat, along with the basil, jalapeños, and squeeze of lime. Stumbled upon Pho Luen Fat this past Sunday when I was at a park near this part of SF. Currently, everything is to-go and cash only. I haven't seen these types of prices since 10+ years ago at other similar restaurants. I ordered seafood chow-fun, including tax/tip was about $10! I was even able to eat this for another meal at a later time. Needless to say, the portion was generous and they weren't too stingy with seafood. Was in the area visiting the SF Library Visitacion branch and walked by and the food smelled great from the outside. I was hungry and decided to spend $7 cash on #19 Bahn Mi sandwich. It was so good, honestly probably top 5 of any sandwich I have ever had. The perfect amount of spice and heat, lots of flavor for a simple sandwich. I also really liked the bread they used - it had a light crunch on the outside and soft inside which held the sandwich together perfectly without too much much bread taste masking the inside ingredients. The bbh has a bit more lemongrass than what I'd prefer, but it's not bad. The quality of the meat is good, though I wish each bowl had a bit more. I would say the large is more typical of a normal serving, so stay clear of the small unless you're not very hungry. I'm looking forward to going back and trying the rice dishes. The restaurant isn't necessarily the nicest space; there are only a few tables and it doubles as a bakery. But the service is good and the food is solid. There's not a whole lot of seating and this place also has pastries and coffee to go if you are not in the mood for dining in. Pho Dac Biet with the beef on the outside is the way to go if you're craving something filling. There's plenty of ingredients in here and the broth is on point. The bun bo hue "A special" is also another good option if you want something spicy. It's definitely fragrant with the shrimp paste and they have a pork cubes in the soup just the way I like it. The prices are so affordable, and a small order of Pho Tai was definitely a small portion but perfect for not overfilling yourself and regretting it later. I only got to know this place during COVID. The gentleman that usually answers the phone is really pleasant. (I'm so used to the brusque service you tend to get at some of our mom/pop establishments, so it was a nice change up.) And bonus the menu is a combo of Vietnamese, Thai and Chinese. Everyone is a winner! The food is as good as it gets...flavorful broth, fresh toppings for the pho. The go-tos for pho are the rare beef and the spicy combo(seafood/meat) pho.
