New place to try Bun Rieu ~~~~~~ A relatively new restaurant in the Midland & McNicoll plaza. Among all these new Vietnamese establishments throughout the city, my go-to priority is always the places where Bun Rieu is available. Excitedly drove up here! We ordered: # Bun Rieu # Rare beef and Brisket Pho My Bun Rieu was a bit disappointing. It had more porky flavour than crab's. So my "crab flavor craving" (which I look for in Bun Rieu) was not satisfied. Also - I expect Bun Rieu to arrive piping hot, but it didn't. The first sip was enough to let me down as I would not have the sensations that I crave for in Bun Rieu. We had mixed reactions about Rare Beef and Brisket Pho. The soup was darker - we are accustomed to clear soup, so it was new to us. May be regional differences, which was fine. Then we were so impressed by the meat - textures (both rare beef and brisket) were very very tender and the thickness were perfect. The meat was one of the best that we have had. This new to us Viet resto in this busy plaza that is jam packed with eateries turned out to be a good option on a cold wintry night for a great bowl of pho. We ventured in to try PH as we saw one of our favourite desserts on the menu, Bahn Da Lon, the pandan layer cake. The restaurant is pleasantly decorated; much like all the new Vietnamese restaurants with lots of fake vines and flowers. I liked that they had the garlic slices in vinegar (missed the sliced chilies) to add to our meal at our table. We shared a small order of very well made deep fried spring rolls (so good that we almost ordered extra rolls) and tried the rare beef pho and the house special pho. Broth here was more fragrant than most with cardamom and cinnamon in the forefront. We appreciated the higher quality of the meat in our pho and and the addition of shredded purple cabbage in the bean sprout for our noodles. A very solid 8/10 for the pho! Our heart sank when it was finally time for dessert and we were told that they may have served the last piece of the pandan cake earlier. Our server brought out some complimentary rice & bean dessert while he went to check with the kitchen. The dessert gods were smiling on us that night as the server said we were in fact getting the last slice. :D The pandan cake did not disappoint as it was perfectly bouncy, chewy, jiggly coconut creamy goodness. Honestly, I don't know how we finished all the food we ordered that night, but it was totally worth the extra drive to come here for the great pho and excellent cake. Good pho place in the Milliken neighborhood. It's not a fancy Vietnamese soup noodle place with some solid dishes. The Bun Rieu - Vietnamese Crab and Tomato Noodle Soup gives half a small crab with it. Pretty impressive. The Viet spring roll is also tasty. Recommended. read more

We were in the area and we're always down for pho, so we decided to dine here. I ordered the bun rieu, and my party also ordered pho too. I love that my soup noodle came with some soft shell crab. It was good, but I'm not sure if it was outstanding enough for a return visit, given we aren't super close to the area. The unique thing is they do have homemade sweets like cassava cakes and more for you to order. I'm glad I tried it, but I'm not sure it's something I would crave again. In terms of ambiance, it's not run-down but also not very elevated either, more middle of the ground. Service was efficient. read more

Pho Hue has an extensive menu with a variety of traditional dishes along with some speciality items and sandwiches as well. Their actual pho is slightly smaller than other restaurants, but prices trend lower as well so it's a good choice for smaller appetites. I easily polished off the large ox tail rice noodle soup ($19.95), as there wasn't a lot of noodles. But it did have plenty of fall-off-the-bone ox tail, which was a nice change from the typical flank or brisket and easier to eat than a hulking beef rib. The broth was satisfying - piping hot, salty enough, and relatively clear. Perhaps, not quite as nuanced in flavour as some places, it still hit the spot on a cold winter day. I enjoyed all the fresh herbs garnishing the bowl, they gave the dish a bright punch. Their noodles were 100% better than the complimentary vegetarian spring roll (normally $7.95 for two pieces) that was given in return for posting a Google review. I've had better spring rolls at buffets: at least they're not as oily and even buffet fillings are more substantial than the paltry cabbage and carrot that makes up Pho Hue's. It's a shame Pho Hue serves their spring rolls plain... a vinaigrette would really help cut through the oiliness. At least service was friendly and because it's not overly busy very attentive. During their grand opening period, they're also offering 10% off, so the meal was at least budget friendly. Just make sure to bring something other than a credit card as they are cash and debit only. read more

Another great authentic tasting pho place in Scarborough. The service is great and I love the pickled condiments that they provide at each table (garlic and chillies). I ordered the grilled pork vermicelli and was impressed by the portion size. Good thing I was hungry and was able to finish it :) My husband ordered the beef pho and he said it was very tasty as well. The pork was grilled very well, and I loved the crispness of the spring roll. Give this place a try if you are in the area. read more

Excellent neighbourhood viet restaurant. Living in the area, this is my go to place because it's no frills unlike some of the more popular places in the area. It's clean, service is quick and friendly and the baseline on all of the food is really high. I come here at least once a month. I'm not a big fan of the gentrification of Vietnamese food lately (bone marrow, smoked brisket etc) since it doesn't really add anything to the dish. This place limits that and I appreciate how humble it is. It's also a great place to eat with toddlers because there's less visual/audio stimulation for them. I've tried maybe 70% of the menu items and haven't been upset about any of it. Is it world changing? No of course not but it's also priced appropriately. Would I recommend that you drive from across the city to eat here? No, but if you live in the area and are tired of how expensive viet food has become, give this place a try. First time trying this place. It must be relatively new because I didn't even know it was here. Love the bun bo hue. Has lots of meat and is a bit spicy. Lately, the bun bo hues from other restaurants haven't been spicy at all. The pho special is also very good. Tasty brother, good amount of meat and noodles are fresh. I was pretty excited when I saw a new pho place, but I was also wary of the fact that there are so many good places in this area of Scarborough so it was going to be tough to stand out. I can summarize my visit in the statement that every aspect of my visit was passable, but nothing stood out. My pho and spring rolls were tasty, but the portions were a bit on the smaller side. A previous review said the broth is a bit on the sweeter side, and while I think I agree, I also didn't find it off-putting and instead I enjoyed it. The iced coffee was good, but this place did not give me the glass of ice and condensed milk with the dripping coffee filter on top of the glass. I can appreciate an already made product arriving at my table, but I much prefer the novelty and experience of watching the coffee drip and mixing myself. Regarding price/value, prices were average and maybe leaning on the expensive side, but given the rising cost of everything I thought it was still reasonable. The restaurant is pretty new, so all of the furniture is still clean. The wait staff was quick and to the point, and I appreciate that. Overall this is a 3-3.5/5 for me. I think it's reliable and if a friend wanted to go, I would gladly eat here. But it would also never be something I crave for. read more

The food is pretty good but also pretty standard. Their pho stock is a bit on the sweeter side but it's nice. The meat is a bit on the fattier side though. The coffee could use a bit more condensed milk but if people like it less sweet then it's good. The smoothies were also pretty good. The servers were polite but nothing out of the ordinary. Service was a bit iffy at night. Even though there's not much for the single staff at front of the shop, he still handed us a paper to write down the order rather than taking the order himself. Both of us ordered the regular size beef tendon pho. Food was fine and portion is adequate. No particular salty or thirsty aftertaste. But the pho noodles were all clumped up in both of our bowls. A lot of positive reviews for this resturant so decided to give it a try. We were the only ones there at first around 5pm on a Monday but around 6-7pm it got busy. Service was good and our waiter was nice and receptive. Food was good and tasty. I did not feel like having pho tonight so decided to try something from the rice menu. I got the sautéed beef and vegetables on rice, which were very good. I also got mango smoothie that could have been a meal in itself. Atmosphere was nice. Would come here again. read more
