I have been to this place three times in the past two years. The first two times I ate here the service was okay along with the food, but this last time I ate here the service was terrible and my sister's food tasted like top ramen with little amounts of seafood. We ordered our food and I specifically said I wanted the vegetarian noodle soup. I was the last to get my food and out came a vegetarian noodle plate and I told the guy that I ordered soup and he told me no, I ordered the noodle plate. My friends and sister backed me up and said "she ordered the soup." The man looked so mad he took it back and said fine. My soup came out so fast I questioned if they really cook fresh food or not. The whole time we were eating our waitress checked on us once, the only nice person was the bus boy with the water. She couldn't even look me in the eye and I apologized for the mix up even though it was her fault. Ive been here a handful of times and always had a good experience. The only resturant like it in Arcata so they dont really have competion to compare to. I'm just now starting to appreciate good Pho, and this restaurant definitely makes me like it even more. I got the vegetarian vermicelli noodles, which came in a massive bowl full of fresh vegetables and tofu. The peanut sauce that came with it was amazing. Never had Vietnamese food before going to this place, and Pho Hoang is very tasty and different. The soups are amazing and the spring rolls with peanut sauce is exceptional. My favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Humboldt County. The pho is outstanding and is available in many varieties. The spring rolls are tasty with the peanut sauce. Good selection of beer, including the "El River IPA" (that would be Eel River IPA). Nice, friendly staff; good, fast service. Don't rush over, however; the restaurant is closed during the month of June, after the Humboldt State students go home for the summer (it's walking distance from the campus, on the other side of Highway 101), and will reopen on July 2. read more

This place has really good food. I've had the spring rolls which are fresh with mint and a yummy sweet peanut dipping sauce. It is within a block of an AMRTS bus stop and a few blocks uphill from the RTS bus stop. I only wish they didn't use Styrofoam takeout containers. As far as I know this is the only pho/Vietnamese place in Arcata, so it is a very nice addition to the restaurant options here. This place is nice for a date or with friends. They do close sometimes for holiday breaks, so if it's holiday time, you may want to call ahead to make sure they are open. I think last summer they were gone for like a month or so. read more

Went for the Pho, which was good, as most Pho is. But then we saw the red curry. Sadly, they were out that night, so my wife went back the next day. And it was like crack cocaine. So she went back again. Might turn into an expensive habit. Hopefully she doesn't end up toothless and living in a cardboard box near the restaurant, never to bring leftovers home again. Food is ok! I have had better Vietnamese cuisine in the Humboldt area. First impression when I walked in reminded me of those Carl's jr commercials. You know, the ones where you can hear the food moving around in someone's mouth because they keep there mouth open the whole time. I have been meaning to write a review!!! So yummy : ) Delicious! From Orange County, so I am SPOILED when it comes to pho, and I have to enjoy pho at least once per week... I will say that sometimes this joint is out of basil or onions but it's no biggie because their broth is savory and delicious. I've brought my family here and have ordered out so many times for my friends visiting from home and for my family from the East Coast and each person has loved it. Their noodle dishes are great too...also I especially adore their chili spicy chicken wings (when they have them!!!) I've been bummed when they have run out before. Delish, I am happy with this place since there really aren't any great Vietnamese joints in Arcata, and when I move back to OC I will fondly remember this spot. read more

Sad to report that the standard of the food here is getting worse. The pho was good at initial opening years ago, but after yesterday visit, my friends and I agreed that this restaurant is now off the list. We are from south east Asia so we know what good authentic noodles dish should taste like. The broth used to taste home made, but now it taste like instant stuff sold by restaurant outlet. The food came out lightning fast, faster than fast food! Friday night, full house, and we got all of our food in under 5 minutes of ordering, impressive. We were also asked a number of times if everything was good and our water glasses were refilled instantly. Thats a lot to say for a restaurant, especially in Arcata! Veggie spring rolls were good, veggie fried rice was delicious but probably contained chicken stock, veggie pho was good - steaming hot (im not one to complain about getting HOT food at a restaurant) with good veggies but definitely contained bonito flakes (fish), and the broth was average. The avocado smoothie with rainbow chunks was good but a little overly sweet. We left full and happy, but my stomach was yelliing at me well into the next day for eating soup with bonito in it. They were extremely slow at getting our order we were basically ignored for over 15 minutes. Just as we were about to leave they came to take out order.They got mad at my friend when she was ordering just because she wanted to talk add bubble to her milk tea. They did not expedite the food at the same time I got mine and she got hers about 10 minutes later. They never asked how we were doing with our meals they never refilled out waters. They brought the wrong soup to my brother and after he had already taken a few bites they realized their mistake and took the bowl away -BUT THEN SERVED IT TO THE OTHER CUSTOMER. We also purchased an additional p2 to go; however we realized later that they gave us raw meat wrapped in plastic wrap placed amongst noodles that I suppose they expected us to cook at home? I should know by now. I have eaten here about half a dozen times. Twice I have had the Pho and it was OK. Every time I have had anything else on the menu, it has been mediocre at best. Tonight we had the coconut shrimp (not very crisp and kind of greasy) and two stir fry dishes. The stir fry dishes were just bad. Greasy, under cooked onions, dry chicken, tough eggplant. The server brought the food and was not even sure which dish was which (and neither were we). And no one came to check on us. I know some people like this place and if all I had ever ordered was the soup and didn't care about service, maybe I would feel the same way. But instead, I have eaten my last meal here. read more
