I was too tired to cook myself so I went to pho Hanoi and got the biggest portion of pho I could find. Unluckily for me, I was greeted with a very bland bowl of pho that tasted as if it was just water mixed with noodles. I was so disappointed that I barely touched my bowl and left. I gave it another chance a month later and although it had a little more flavor, it's nothing like true Vietnamese pho. I had two dishes off of their specials menu (the shaking beef and the potato curry) and both were only ok. Neither my bf finished our meals. If I were to come back, I'd stuck to the soup. I think this place may be the only decent Pho place in Gainesville. Faith was probably the best for a while and then I believe the management changed. Since then, Faith has gotten pretty bad. My friends prefers Pho Hanoi much more now. There's a lot of vegetarian options but they are all mediocre. I think the Tofu banh mi is the best. The singaporean noodles are decent. It's day and night different if you compared it to Banh Mi Cali in Orlando which is fresh and excellent! Food at this Pho Hanoi is not authentic. It's Americanized version! The best dish there is the Crepe (Banh Xeo). The tapioca soup there is not authentic but it's good enough for me. Since Pho and Vietnamese spring rolls comprise Spouse's all-time favorite meal, we trekked down to Pho Hanoi yesterday for his birthday meal. The meal was edible. The service was sort of adequate. Sure we waited 10 minutes to be seated when there were at least 4 empty tables. No biggie. We ordered spring rolls while we perused the menu, and then waited another five minutes for little plates. The rolls, when we got to them, were tightly and beautifully wrapped - which is the last good thing I can say about them. Basically, they were tasteless. Lots of crunch, no taste. The meat was dry; tasted as though it had been boiled . . . and boiled . . . The shrimp were - absent. And the peanut sauce had the viscosity of water and tasted much the same. So, cross of the spring rolls. I ordered pho P2 - Pho Ti Nam, Gn, Sch. Supposedly with thin slices of medium rare beef, flank, tendon, and tripe. The broth was far from flavorful, and Because the sauces on the table were so sticky, I decided not to chance them. The noodles seemed to have been pre-cooked, cooled and dumped into the hot soup in a lump. It took some serious chopstick work to pry any loose. And now, the meat - yes lots of thin slices of something. Incredibly overcooked - yes, it might have been beef, but there was no way to tell. One tiny piece of tripe (1/2" x 1" at best), one bit of tendon. And that's it, period. Spouse ordered Hu Tieu Hai San (T5), allegedly a seafood combination in a clear pork broth. The broth was gentle and pretty good. The noodle problem was the same as my pho's. There were five shrimp, one tiny piece of squid, and one of faux crab. The seafood was not fresh - it probably came straight from the freezer where it has been living for a while. Both came with the usual accompaniments - bean sprouts, lime, jalapenos, mint. No problem there And - not to be overly picky - but the rest room looked as though it had not been cleaned in a long while. At the very least, my guess is it wasn't straightened up that morning. The very large waste basket was overflowing and there was paper all over the floor. The toilet paper was down to its last few pieces. The door handle was quite frankly yukky - greasy, and a long-time buildup of dirt. And when I reported the paper situation, nobody seemed to care. (There's a photo on FB that shows a beautifully clean restroom with a framed print on the wall. Trust me - this was taken somewhere else - the toilet is not the same, there was no photo on the wall, and the paint is completely different.) We were hungry, and didn't feel like going somewhere else. So we ate our lunch. But this will be a one-time experience for us. If neither of our favorite foods were beyond mediocre, and given the condition of the ladies room, I'm not willing to chance other items on the menu. read more

Pho Hanoi is our go-to neighborhood Vietnamese goldmine. It may not look like much from the outside, but it definitely has the most delicious Vietnamese food I've ever had! As a vegetarian, options aren't as extensive for you, but the options you do have are so packed with flavor you'll be wanting more! I highly recommend the fantastic spring rolls and peanut dipping sauces as a starter! The waiters are also great in accommodating if needed, and will let you know that the yellow rice isn't vegetarian! My boyfriend eats meat and he LOVES the many different flavors of Pho! Friends and I have been coming here for 3 years, its our favorite pho place in town. Staff is always nice, the restaurant is clean and simple, and it's right next to a boba tea place so that's a plus. It's tough to go wrong with a big bowl of beef pho. The broth is incredibly sweet and savory, theres always plenty of add-ins (sprouts, jalapenos, thai basil, and lime, as usual), and there's usually an okay amount of meat. I haven't been to Pho Hanoi in quite a while (probably a year) and honestly, it has improved significantly. My first time (4 years ago) was pretty good and then the other 5 or so times that I came back, it was very mediocre, they had low-quality ingredients, they were giving browning basil and bean sprouts and the food wasn't even that great. This most recent time I want to say that it has impressed me, they have upgraded their menus and have provided greener, livelier, quality herbs and add ons. The winning aspect of my visit is the Pho itself. Their Pho broth has improved and this gave an overall great taste and just made the experience that much better. I use to rank Pho Hanoi on the lower tier of the pho restaurants but this recent experience has definitely elevated it on that list. I was desperate for Vietnamese food in Gainesville and found myself trying this place, even though I've heard bad reviews. The bad reviews do not lie. The pho is absolutely inaccurate in terms of authenticity. The broth is off-flavor, the veggies do not suffice, and it simply doesn't hit the spot-- even when I was desperate. The Bun Bo Hue's broth was bland. That's really sad to me because Bun Bo Hue is supposed to be spicy and potent in flavor. It also lacked most of the correct meat that goes into Bun Bo Hue. I also had the Goi Cuon here once (spring rolls). The filling was disproportionate. The peanut sauce was also watery and a little bland. I found myself adding hoison sauce to even it out. I also once had the Com Thit Nuong. The rice was watery (ew), and the meat was little and flavorless. Service here was okay, though, waiters/waitresses are nice. I cannot and do not pretend to know Vietnamese food very well, which is how I ended up at Pho Hanoi to begin with. I saw a review that talked about their "bun" dishes and got excited because I though about actual BUNS. (How was I supposed to know that "bun" in vietnamese cooking is rice noodles?) I think that the gentleman waiting on me thought I was losing my mind as I flipped excitedly through the menu in search of the non-existent buns. Finally, I settled on the reliable dumplings, and decided to try the shrimp with lemongrass. The dumplings were delicious: flattened, crispy, savory, juicy morsels. I could have kicked myself for not just making 3 orders and calling it a night. I told myself that if the main dish was anything less than amazing, I would return it and get more of these yummy dumplings. The meal came out very quickly, still sizzling from the wok. At first, I mistook the lemongrass for celery (remember, not familiar with this food) and very nearly sent it back. Then I took that first bite, savored that clean hit of herbal lemon, sweet shrimp, and spicy chili, and I knew that food wasn't going anywhere but in my mouth. It's not normal for me to hunt down all of the vegetables in a dish before I finish eating the meat, but I realized very quickly that I LOVE lemongrass, and I didn't want to lose one ... single ... piece. Like I said, I don't know Vietnamese cooking. But I do know that this will be my standard now and for future, which is both good and bad. Good because it's here and not, say, in Atlanta where I can't readily get to it. Bad because it's nowhere near my job or my house, and how can you get excited about takeout Chinese, which is pretty glorified chicken nuggets and radioactive sweet n' sour sauce when you know that a place like this is in town? And worse yet, how can you explain a dish like shrimp with lemongrass to people who think that french fries are vegetables? read more

I love getting a table that is so unstable and un maintained that 5 pounds could topple the table. The servers were very nice. There was slightly dirty outdoor seating so we could eat outside. A plus for me because I like to bring my dog with me. The food was not impressive. We got one bowl of pho xe lua, one bowl of hu tieu, and one portion of cha gio. The pho broth was not rich and beefy, the bowl was skimp on the meats, and did not have much cilantro or green onion. The hu tieu was also lacking in topping and chives. However, the noodles were fresh so that was a good sign. The cha gio was average at best. Two rolls with very little filling. Really disappointing experience. The food was ok, but the waitress Nee was acting like she just went througj a divorce or something. She threw things onto the table and did not even smile for once. ALL we got were frowns and drooping lips. I used to really like this place, but it has changed for the worst. Horrible attitude and service my last two visits. First visit: I took one of my best friends who had never tried Vietnamese food and I promised this place was the best. Well.... that was a mistake. Not knowing much about Vietnamese food, he asked: "So, what is your best plate, your specialty, because I am a rookie and want try your best". The server responded in the most condescending way she could muster: "A'haaa, the name is Pho Hanoi... I guess Pho". And she was not kidding or being funny about it. If that ain't the rudest answer for someone who is going out on a limb to try something new in YOUR establishment, I don't know what is. The Pho, which is supposed to be their specialty, is also tasteless. Now, I am not Vietnamese, but I do love Vietnamese food... and I know what a good bowl of Pho is supposed to look like. The second visit: When we walked in, the restaurant was empty, there was only one table with people dining. The guys at the front door looked at us like we were bothering him. That attitude remained with him and his other buddy (another server) throughout our stay. He kept going back to his dinner (he was eating when we got there) and giving us dirty looks because he had to leave his dinner to serve us. I was thinking "if there is two of you clowns, why can't one serve us while the other has dinner?" No, that would make too much sense. Instead they gave us the evil Vietnamese eye all night long. And let me tell you, there is nothing worse than being served by an ill-mannered pubescent server who thinks he is doing you a favor. My mom and I have been here several times and don't have very much experience with Vietnamese food. We have enjoyed our food and look forward to trying it out again. I would give the place four stars but the service was majorly slacking...they never ask if you want something to drink besides water (and of course it being Gainesville water, it tastes bad, so of course I want something else). One time it took FOREVER to get our food. There was a large group of people that ordered after us but it looked like they put in their food order first...leaving me and my mom waiting and waiting. Since I wrote my previous review, I've been to this place at least 5 more times. The food is still pretty good, but the taste and service quality seems to be going down. The serving guy is somewhat slow and clumsier than he used to be. I guess the fresh spirit that he used to have is leaking in the air. The Pho soup taste is getting a bit weaker as well. I really dig this place. Every time I go, everyone is friendly, and I have tried several different things on their menu from pho to stir fry dishes. I have enjoyed everything I've tried. I think it is definitely a step above "good enough for local" ethnic cuisine and hangs pretty well with most Vietnamese places I used to haunt in larger cities. But beggars cannot be choosers when you're in the middle of a place that doesn't really have a ton of options for Pho. Was not impressed at the bowl of Pho. THIS PLACE IS TERRIBLE. I am 100% Vietnamese and know what Vietnamese food is supposed to taste like. First thing I noticed was the english music on in the restaurant, first sign that this is not going to be 100% authentic. Then we sat down, ordered spring rolls that were terribly wrapped with liquid peanut sauce and definitely not matched to order. After I ordered com ga nuong (rice with grilled chicken) and my partner ordered banh mi. The chicken was cut into small, bland pieces and gave me a cup of rice with THREE pieces of pickled carrots. NOT filling at all. I left hungry. My partner's banh mi was TINY for what it's worth. He asked for no jalapenos and they still left the jalapenos on there. This place is terrible. Pho-nominal!!! I tried the Pho for the first time today I love that you are given fresh ingredients to add to a homemade chicken broth. Sides served fresh are: Jalepenos, Thai (Anise) Basil sprigs, mung bean sprouts, chicken, a lime wedge and of course the pho. If you like it hot add more freshly sliced Jalepenos or saracha sauce. Food quality is still average. Pho is never that great but satisfies a craving and is decent when you put enough sriracha and lime. Bun bo hue and bo kho is excellent! However, I am updating my review because I was really dissatisfied with my bowl recently. When I got my bun bo hue, the noodles were all bits and pieces (not long and fresh). I'm not sure if they were the scraps or old, but there wasn't a lot either. Just tired of gainesville- not that great pho that's pricey and does not give enough noodles. Banh mi's are $4.25 or so which is okay, but they definitely skimp on the meat. Pho hanoi, don't skimp on ingredients or you will lose business! Will be less likely to go now. read more
