This place was surprisingly good. So good it deserves a soundtrack. I mean... I wasn't expecting to be dissapointed... but I feel like I have certain expectations for Vietnamese places in the area and this just upped the ante. This one took it to the next level. This one put extra icing on the cake, more pepperoni on the pie, an extra four maraschino cherries in the Shirley Temple. Our Order: Joy Rolls: These are much like any other rice paper wrapped spring roll where you can see through the transparent wrapper into the stuffed fresh filling, but this one didn't have any ordinary shmordinary filling. It didn't have just pork in it. It had some type of fried goodness inside that just elevated it. I think it was an eggroll? Basically after I took a bite, the song "Higher Love" by Steve Winwood started playing. Cold Cut Combo Banh Mi: Ok... there's a lot going on with this banh mi, so let me throw in the description here: "Banh mi thit nguoi. Banh mi filled with cold-cut, Vietnamese sausage, house mayonnaise, pate, cucumbers, daikon, and carrot pickles, cilantro, green onion, jalapenos, and topped with house special sauce." Now, if I hadn't had a VERY remarkable banh mi not just a week or so earlier, this banh mi might be be at the top of my list. But do not fret, I can assure you that this banh mi is VERY worth ordering and should be on a top ten list in the area. Basically after I took a bite, the song Kiss Me by Sixpence None The Richer started playing. Ginger Tenderized Eye Round Steak Pho Noodle Soup: Now, let's talk about the star of the show. This pho was like nothing I've ever tasted. This beautiful beautiful broth with punches of gingery beef steaming hot in an appropriately large bowl really took center stage. This soup was so good that I'd put it in my will. Basically after I took a bite, the song You Can't Stop The Beat by Elijah Kelly, John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Nikki Blonsky, Queen Latifah, and Zac Efron started playing on the Hairspray Soundtrack. Now... I have to be honest. One of the main reasons we came to Pho Bytes was because they have Vietnamese egg coffee. But they were out that day... which almost caused this review to be 4 stars instead of 5... but I just couldn't do it. As soon as I learned of this basically the song Love Really Hurts Without You by Billy Ocean started playing. All of the food and service we received was so top notch though, even though we were totally gutted when we realized they didn't have the egg coffee, that it definitely is a 5 stars. It's ok there's one thing that's for sure... I definitely plan on coming back when we're out of this woods. Pho Bytes is a relatively new Pho joint on the edge of The City of Fairfax. It is located in the physical space that was previously occupied by "Pho Today." I stopped in for a quick lunch one weekday afternoon. Unlike most other Pho joints - you place your order on a tablet, pay for it, take a number, and sit down. Your food is then brought out to you. I ordered the Pho Ga. Overall, pretty tasty Pho Ga. The chicken was tender, the noodles were slightly clumped, so I had to work the noodles free. The aromatics were fresh. The broth was a bit on the light side - I like a rich chicken broth that has layers of flavor and complexity to it - this was not quite there. Service was good. I got the bun bo hue and it was really delicious! The meat was very tender (with other places I've been, the meat is notoriously tough and dry). I wish it had a little bit more of a lemongrass flavor but that is just my own personal preference. I've seen this pho place around and decided to try it out. I'm so glad I did - I think I'll definitely come back here in the future. Did an online order and food was ready in a timely manner, pick up options are listed online, and the employees were very nice and professional. +Joy rolls: Omg, where have these been all my life. There is a spring roll INSIDE of a summer roll so you get a bit of crunch with the soft chewy texture of the rice paper wrap, plus there are fresh veggies inside and a thin piece of marinated beef. It came with a nuoc mam sauce that was very light and had the tiniest hint of spice. I think I could order several of these to eat for a meal. +Eye round steak pho: A decent amount of food, absolutely loved that all of the vegetables were super fresh and the broth was still piping hot even though I arrived 5-10 min later to pick up my order. The broth was comforting and felt hearty although it didn't have quite a deep flavor, but definitely something that would do the job if you're craving pho soup. +Grilled pork rice: A solid grilled pork rice dish with fresh veggies and a nuoc mam sauce. I think it was the same nuoc mam sauce from the Joy rolls but loved that it was nice and light with a hint of spice. +Tofu banh mi: Wanted to try a vegetarian option since all of the other dishes were meat forward and it honestly was not bad! A delicious pho restaurant in Fairfax! It has plentiful parking and the restaurant is easy to find. When you walk in, there is an electronic ordering system, which is quite fancy. It's fairly easy and you can cater your order to however you like it. My mom ordered a vermicelli bowl with grilled shrimp and I got the bowl with grilled lemongrass chicken and egg rolls. They were both really good and plentiful servings within the bowl. The staff was also really great and helpful with ordering. Price is reasonable and plenty of spaced seating. Went here for lunch and was pleasantly surprised with the food! My husband and I were trying to find a Vietnamese restaurant close by since our favorite one closed. My sandwich tasted great and the baguette was very long and completely filled from end to end, about a foot long. And there was the problem. Although the banh mi filling tasted great and authentic, the baguette left a lot to be desired. If you are looking for a traditional banh mi with the short, crunchy exterior and the soft center, this is not the place to go to. One of the most authentic tasting pho places in Fairfax. I love their special - ginger tenderized beef pho. It has a great aroma to it and the soup is flavorful. You can really taste the ginger in the beef, a good choice for a cold, winter day. Also got their Pho David Biet, which is everything you can imagine. They give you a generous amount of pho when you order takeout - close to two small bowls. I come back to this place all the time when I want pho. I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant; the execution was quite good on all three items that I ordered which included the grilled pork banh mi (as suggested by the owner I believe), joy rolls, and finally the fried egg rolls. The banh mi had crisp vegetables and a delicious sweet, grilled pork filling; however I believe the baguette wasn't as fresh as it could be (slightly stale but not horrible) and that the pork wasn't particularly warm (might have been affected by carryout), so I couldn't give a perfect score for the sandwich. The joy rolls were absolutely divine with a perfectly chewy rice wrapper and a nice contrast in both textures with the protein and protein skin; I would rate this as the best item in my order. Finally, the fried egg rolls were fried to perfection and we're accompanied very well with the sweet fish sauce. I would definitely come here again to try the pho and give the other items a try. I am happy to have discovered this newish Vietnamese spot through Yelp! I placed an order directly through the Yelp page and was rewarded with a big bowl of comforting, pho -- perfect for the stormy days we've been experiencing of late. Something happened where our delivery was delayed quite significantly -- we had to rewarm up the pho broth on the stove but once it was in our tummies we only felt pure joy. Additionally we had the fried rice, and joy roll which was enjoyed by the whole family as leftovers. Overall, not the best pho in the world but in terms of price, quality, and just the fact that they deliver it was awesome! This is still not able to beat my favorite pho place which is pho VA. I like that you can order at a tablet but the options are much more severely limited. I especially like tendon and it was hard to get any options with the things that I wanted and eliminate the things I didn't want in the bowl. Also I found that the counter service was very unhelpful and they were pushing you to kind of self-serve when it came to the ordering. I'd rather they just took the information of what you wanted and enter it themselves. It's a different concept. I did like that they had the option to eliminate things like cilantro, vile weed!. But other than that I thought that the food was fine I didn't quite care for the broth. But the portion was a little bit on the smaller side as well. I opted for pho for the hubs and bun bo hue for myself to go and it definitely hit the spot! This was the old location of Pho Today. They really need to change the signs. The lighted sign at the top of the building as well as the hanging overhead sign at the entrance are still the former "Pho Today" signage. This is quite a different setup than its predecessor, more similar to how Roll Play is set up. You walk up to 2 computers and place your own order (customize whatever you need to) and grab a number and sit down. Your orders are brought out to you as the food is ready. We tried a few phos and starter rolls. The rolls were all decent, nothing special than the usual rolls, but not bad. The regular phos were also just ok, the broths didn't taste like anything out of the ordinary (our favorite/go-to is Pho 75). However, we were impressed with the special ginger tenderized eye of round pho. The cost is $2+ more than the regular eye of round, but we thought it was well worth it. Not a menu item we have previously seen at other pho restaurants, but the tenderized meat was done well - you could really taste the ginger! Staff was also nice. This place used to be Pho Today, and it wasn't bad, but now that Pho Bytes has taken over with the new management team, I feel the food just got an instant upgrade! Even the decor is better--more modern. They even have free wi-fi and an arcade lounge to just chill. Getting back to the food, I've eaten pho my whole life and know when places skimp on the bone broth, not this place. The broth is very flavorful and the amount of meat is just right! My favorite pho right now is their eye-round ginger pho, which has the full body flavor of traditional pho infused with the soothing aroma of ginger that can cure all colds and cravings :) I also tried their Bun Bo Hue, which is very authentic. Can be spicy to beginners but the broth is good to the last drop! And the bowl was literally full of meats. This place spare no expenses is their dishes. It's quality and quantity for a great fare. Some improvements they can do is their clunky ordering system. Their self ordering system can be confusing at first, wish they would have at least one cashier to take verbal orders in addition to the self ordering kiosks. This has been on my list to try after reading the good reviews. Fast and friendly service for pick up. I probably should have gone with grilled pork but decided to try the lemongrass chicken- ok but a bit dry and not really that flavorful. Wish they had lemongrass beef on their menu. Also needed some fresh basil and mint leaves- the cucumber, sprouts and lettuce don't add enough flavor. The spring rolls were ok but tasted like they were cooked in old oil and the Vietnamese iced coffee tasted burnt and was too creamy so I ended up trashing it after a few sips. If you really want good Vietnamese you need to go to Eden center or Four sisters. Dropped in for pho and found it to be among the very best we have had in many other Vietnamese restaurants in Northern Virginia. I had my usual sliced flank steak and my wife had white meat chicken. To begin, the server brought a carafe of cold water and two ice-filled mason jars with handles....a nice touch. The pho bowls were large and had plentiful noodles and meat. The broth was excellent, not too weak and not too strong. The restaurant is slightly pricier than most Viet ones, but worth it. Clean tasting food and establishment. Ordered the #3 Pho (custom) with Flank, Brisket and Steak. The bean sprouts tail ends were also removed, which many restaurants don't take the time to do and elevated the experience that much more! They adapted a new kiosk for ordering food instead of ordering in person. That system is quite confusing. We ordered 3 orders of extra meat with our pho but the servers only brought out one. As we sat here, we also noticed that a few orders at different tables were also mistaken. A staple to order when at a Vietnamese restaurant would be the Vietnamese coffee. Do not, and I repeat, DO NOT order it from here. It tastes more like I was drinking 80:20 condensed milk. I ordered the pho bytes pho (combination). The soup here is not flavorful at all. It literally tastes like they just threw hot water with fish sauce into it. The wait was about 20-30 minutes. A standard pho restaurant will have the soup base made and ready in the back.
