Right down the street from my job, and everybody knows about it. The locals here say it's the best place to get pho in the area and I'd have to agree with that. There's not many pho places close but this location is very traditional. All the workers are Vietnamese and they know how it should be. I've had the pho here and it's pretty good. The broth actually stands out. I'd say you don't need any hoisin sauce or sriracha. Just enjoy it. I've also had their banh mi here and I'd say it's fair. Not the best but they sell it in a platter that comes with a side and a soup. Spring rolls are decent, but again not the best. So, my husband and I were in the area, and we were actually waiting for another restaurant to open - the hubsters saw Pho 14 a couple of stores down, and I'm like, let's go get a bowl of pho to share while we wait. AHAHAHA So, that's what we did! We walked in and we were seated promptly by the windows. Thanh, who was our server, was very sweet and lovely, and he took care of us :D I was pleasantly surprised that Pho 14 had a couple of other locations (Adams Morgan and Columbia heights). It is family-owned, and apparently the mother was the one who provided the recipes that are featured on the menu. They offer items such as appetizers (egg rolls, spring rolls, crepes, etc.), pho (different meats and toppings), beef noodle soup, salad, stir fry, vermicelli, rice dishes, sandwiches, and smoothies. I saw the Cha Gio (egg rolls), so I had to try them - they were two deep-fried rolls stuffed with shrimp, turkey (yes, turkey), vermicelli, dried mushrooms, and carrots - it comes with either their homemade fish sauce or sweet chili sauce (I opted for the first one) - I actually enjoyed these, as they reminded me of Thai crispy spring rolls; it was not overly greasy, but light and tasty with the tangy fish sauce. For the pho, you choose between a regular-sized or a large-sized bowl - we had a regular-sized #16 ('Tai'), which just contained slices of eye-of-round steak for the meat - I thought the quality of the meat was actually pretty good, and usually I focus on the noodles and the bean sprouts - but, I enjoyed it. The broth had a slight sweet taste to it, but it was still good (I still added the hoison and the sriracha). There was definitely a lot of broth, and I would probably order another serving of noodles the next time. Overall, it was a pleasant dining experience, and I would love to come back here (or try out their other locations). Pho 14 is the best thing to happen to Van Ness. Sadly I am quite literal when I say this. No more trips to Columbia Heights to get my favorite pho? Yessss! The Pho 14 menu is identical to that of the other locations, and so is the food. They have pho down to a science. My favorite pho is the pho chay (veggie pho with tofu and vegetables). This is one of those phomiracles you can't get anywhere else. The broth is flavorful, the veggies give it character, and the fried tofu is cooked to perfection. The service at this location is pretty quick since it doesn't get as crowded as the other Pho 14 locations. One of the greatest wonders of Pho 14 is how they do takeout. They have this down to a science too. The broth, meat, leaves/sprouts/ and noodles all come in separate containers so you get to assemble it at home! This is great because the noodles don't overcook while sitting in the broth. Grab a large bowl and get ready to have some fun at home. The perfect addition to your meal? Get a smoothie. Decent pho. The broth is flavorful compared to other places. Great prices. The fried rice is great as well - fragrant aroma that is different from the typical fried rice you find although the rice can be a bit dry sometimes. Another dish I would recommend is the vermicelli with spring roll, chicken, seafood with a broth by the side. I finally tried the Van Ness Pho 14 location after eyeing it EVERY DAY on my commute home. Disclaimer: I have an aunt that is Vietnamese and used to own a Vietnamese restaurant in France. I have been fortunate enough to have her home-made pho and spring rolls whenever she visited the US or when I'd go to France. Back to the Van Ness Pho 14. First, this location does not serve the whole menu online. All I know is that for the stir fry dishes, they only have one of the curry dishes. I ordered the spring rolls and a large pho with well-done brisket, flank, mushrooms, and carrots. On the menu, for the pho, those were all base toppings. Jumping a head, when I got my receipt, they charged me extra for the carrots and mushrooms, but I thought they were included because the menu said it was part of the base toppings, and I could pick 4! N-E-WAZE....... So the spring rolls were ok. The wrapper was a tad hard. I am used to them being fresh and soft. Definitely not worth the $4.50. You get two and they are small...like 3.5 inches each (I measured them). If you think that's the appropriate size for your money, then you haven't had real Vietnamese spring rolls. Or you've been ripped off your whole life! The pho saved the day. The broth was delicious! I even saved some for the next day (since I ordered a large) and there was not a lot of fat particles (or whatever they are called) in the broth the next day. One of my concerns with the pho was the basil. They gave me a twig with....MAYBE....two healthy leaves. I put EVERYTHING in my PHO - basil, jalapenos, lime, bean sprouts - and I dip my soup in plum sauce and sriracha. In conclusion, I would probably not go back to Pho 14. I might try their banh mi sandwich, but I'd prefer to save my money and eat Vietnamese food when I take a trip out to Wheaton, Rockville, CA, or Vietnam! read more

I respect the menu. It's a straight-forward establishment trying to stay true to the roots of Vietnamese cuisine. This Pho 14 restaurant is one of three that are operating in DC. The story of the family who started this business is compelling and moving; I get teary-eyed each time I read it (see website). The food I have ordered, most unfortunately, has been overcooked. The various egg roll options that are possible are deep-fried severely and come out oil-laden; the meat and shrimp skewers can be tough; the garnishes are so so; and the iced Vietnamese coffee is a downer. The namesake dish of pho (soup), well, I just don't find it very robust...sorry. There is an unpretentious vibe that I like here. The staff is gracious however service can be uneven. What a great location. It's just across the street from UDC. With all the diversity that this university has in terms of students and staff who could be customers--the potential is vast for this Pho 14 location to be a fabulous eatery, not to mention that the Van Ness metro stop is just a stone's throw away. read more

Pho 14 has good food coupled with very fast service. They take your order within several minutes of sitting down, or within seconds if you know what you want. Within several minutes of ordering, they brought out my spring rolls. The spring rolls were pretty good. The only complaint I have is that they hardly included any shrimp. Within another five or so minutes, my pho came out. The pho was pipping hot and contained a sizable portion of noodles and a good amount of meat. I was excited to try the new pho place that opened up near me and what better way to experience pho with a saturday hangover. Unfortunately, my experience was not as pleasant as my giddiness. The service was terrible. I actually think the waiter forgot my order. I had to fight for eye contact in order to remind him that I was still sitting there. There were people who came in 5 minutes after me almost finishing their portions before I even eyed mine. Once my order came, the waiter did not even apologize even though it was obvious he had forgotten about me. I know they just opened but they are obviously short staffed or have incompetent staff. On the bright side, the pho was delicious as usual. The regular size is not as big as most places. I left still feeling hungry, which is unusual for pho. Also, the soup was not as warm as I like but that wasn't a huge issue. Overall, I will be going back to this place because I live in the area but if the service continues to be this poor I may just pretend that pho14 van ness never opened. As vegetarians (flexeterian to be exact) we are always on the look out for a good pho. On a dreary Sunday afternoon, after a visit to the nearby Hillwood estate we drove down Connecticut ave and noticed this unassuming place. A quick check on Yelp confirmed it worth trying and so we walked into a very modern looking clean well lit place. The signs on the sidewalk thanking its customer for making them the best pho, Vietnamese and Asian got our expectations even higher. It turned out perfect: Pho was very generous with fresh and tasty veggies, incredible portion of shiitake, and a great broth. My wife and I really enjoy this place. The pho broth is super tasty, service is always fast and efficient, and the price is super reasonable. Only feedback I would give is that the outside patio is rarely open when it's nice weather, and the beef can be a little inconsistent. I've had really great cuts of the flank, and then sometimes very chewy cuts. If you're in the mood for Pho though this place is really solid and I'd recommend giving it a try. $10 + tax and tip for a large bowl of pho is a great deal within DC city limits. That pretty much sums up all you really need to know about Pho 14 to merit a visit. I have been here a bunch of times and have always found it to be quite satisfying. Overall, the pho is good but not great. The broth is pretty tasty, though I'm not sure why it is so dark colored compared to most pho broths, and they give you a solid portion of meat (I get the house special #22 which I think has everything in their kitchen). I will say that the meat is cooked, not raw when it comes to you. I think I understand why they do that - so that people who don't understand the need to let your meat cook in the piping hot broth don't end up eating raw meat. But it was a bit strange and I found the meat to be less tender than it is compared to raw meat cooking in the broth. On that note, the broth is also hot, but not piping hot. I think both of these might be considered happy alterations from traditional pho, but I'd rather just get it served traditionally. I haven't tried anything else here, but based on the pho alone I'm happy giving it a 4 star rating. Even though the service is kinda slow (15-20 minutes to bring out pho in a pretty empty restaurant),the price and the quality of food is pretty great within the district so I'd go for that if you're on a budget. read more

I've eaten here since the week it opened and use to love it. Now however the place is filthy, gross bathrooms , dirty floors and walls, old cracked up booths. Absolutely no care or maintenance has went into the business. The Pho has lost its flavor and the quantity of meats added. They also have limited the pho options as well. The price has went and the hygiene and flavor has went down. The services has always been good, not great. Let hope the new Vietnamese place across the street is better! read more

I have eaten a lot of pho and other Thai food, but I won't be back here. We ate in recently. We had to ask for water and for cutlery, twice. We had to ask to place our order. Two of our orders were incorrect. The fried tofu on my order was dripping grease and was only the outside, not the actual tofu. The sautéed veggies and seafood dish was bland and didn't offer a lot of seafood. The Pho was average. Fried rice was decent and the veggies fresh. The meat was meh. This is our neighborhood pho shop and we've loved it for years. But since the pandemic it has fallen way off. We had dinner there tonight and it will be the last time. Okay I've been back multiple times and can report the bad taste was a one off. The pho is good, a bit salty, and they scrimp a bit on the tripe and tendon, but if you ask for extra they charge you a dollar or so and you get a huge helping. Their Goi Cuon is good, but the peanut sauce should be mixed with a touch of fish sauce and a dab of hoisin sauce to make it more tangy and authentic. The Thai iced tea is okay, the grilled lemon chicken on vermicelli is superb but you MUST ask for extra fish sauce and extra daikon and carrot salad. This is a busy place, the service is always good, but the kitchen gets a bit rattled when pressure builds; this restaurant is perfect if you can come around 4 pm and linger as the only customer in the house, and everything is perfect. If you eat Pho for the broth - it's some of the best quality Pho broth you can get in the city. The chicken and beef broth are clear and you can tell are made with quality ingredients. The vegetarian broth is the best I've ever had. The portions are proper and the vegetables are fresh. The Thai basil is always fresh, looks and smells amazing. The pork/shrimp spring rolls are delicious and the peanut sauce is so good you always want more. It would be 5 stars, but they no longer deliver. I dislike Uber eats due to having to sometimes place the order more than once and having multiple holds for the total amount being held hostage for 2-3days. Please start delivering again. read more

Have you ever been sad? Overworked and underpaid? Stressed by life's little foibles? Then please give yourself a bear hug in the form of food--PHO. Pho 14 is the best of DC. First of all, if you dine in you will be BLOWN by the service. Waiters are attentive, friendly to a fault, and incredibly respectful. The interior is clean and welcoming. It's a super casual atmosphere. Delivery is also a treat. One rainy Thursday evening after work I ordered Pho 14 and realized that I had gotten the wrong order after waiting an hour for my food. I called and the girl on the phone apologized PROFUSELY and had a driver run me the correct order immediately; and they let me keep both orders. The employees are A+. The pho is so tasty. The broth is incredibly complex and flavorful. I always order Tai (eye round of steak) or Chin (brisket). You get tons of fixin's to go with your pho--bean sprouts, lime wedges, spicy hot sauce, savory brown sauce, basil leaves. The way they package the sides for delivery is kind of neat/delightful--imagine winning a goldfish at the fair (puffed up plastic sack tied at the top) but instead of a half-dead beta fish inside, it's a mini arboretum of goodies. This small attention to detail is why Pho 14 is so good! Add together the fixin's, your meat (or veggies or seafood) into the broth and noodles in a huge bowl and we're in business. There have been times when I get Pho 14 and I can literally feel the nutrition, energy, and happiness seeping into my being. It's phenomenal. I also recommend the summer rolls as an appetizer. Their smoothies are really tasty too--my friend and I got mango and avocado, and the avocado was the winner.
