These are not albondigas at all....too many spices and too spicy. It's more like a German Meatball dish. My immediate reaction was "where the hell is the caldo?". I gave it a try but they over did it on the salt, cloves, pepper and garlic. However, the lobster mash potato was delicious. read more

Overall: Come here for small plates with excellent flavor. You will not leave disappointed. We ended up at Phlight on accident. You can say the universe led us here lol we were disappointed with another local restaurant and were leaving the area. When we drove by this place we decided to wing it and stop by. Now that I think abt it, this was destiny. We were immediately seated and brought waters and a menu by a very friendly host. He even moved the umbrella so the sun wasn't on us, thank you. We ordered a bunch of plates that came out one right after the other. The fried chicken was good, but the sauces they're paired with make the dish. Next, the bone marrow came out. I'm not a huge fan of bone marrow but this one was good. I would order it again. The bread that comes with the dish was also a favorite, I would dip it in the fig sauce the lamb comes with. Ok now for my favorite dish, the lamb. When the lamb was brought to the table I was in the middle of my bone marrow so I didn't try it right away. Let me tell you, order this. Most lamb I try is made with chimchurri but this lamb had the most decedent fig sauce. Ooooommf, I wish I knew how I could make this at home. This was the best lamb I've ever had!!!!! I'm going to return just for the lamb. After we received our pork belly and shrimp tacos. The pork belly was so good! But that lamb was just above and beyond. Lol nothing could top it. This place gets pretty packed, and the food isn't too bad but I won't be giving my money to this business anymore. This place doesn't take reservations and we were told we were next for a table (the hostess even pointed to the table we were going to get). As that party was leaving another party went to the table and there was an exchange of hugs and handshakes and the new party took the table! The owner/ manager then went to the table and hugged that party as well. When we brought it up to the hostess she apologized but said nothing could be done, and that we would have to continue to wait. Scrolling through the reviews this seems to be a common practice. So caution if you aren't a friend of the owner/manager expect to be treated like a second class citizen. Don't bother bringing it to the attention of the manager as he will literally laugh in your face and say he doesn't care for your business. read more

Updating my review. Came in recently and I wasn't as charmed as I had previously been. While some of the food is still very good (bravas patatas and arugula salad), I was disappointed by a few of the dishes we ordered (including the shrimp tacos and the chocolate soufflé), along with the fact that they were already out of certain dishes when we had come fairly early in the night. Service is fairly solid, but it did take awhile for someone to come seat us. Every single time I've had the pleasure of indulging in the delicious food this place has to offer, I leave wanting more. It is carefully curated and creates an explosion of flavors in my mouth. The staff has always gone above and beyond with the service provided. We've made it a habit to ask what they suggest and just go with it. This restaurant should invest in a reservation management system for better efficiency. They tell you the wait will be around 15-30 minutes, but in reality it will actually be more than an hour. They save tables for their friends. If the owners want to save tables for their friends they should at least offer reservations. Good thing there are plenty of other restaurants nearby. read more

Picked this place out for date night, we have never been to uptown Whittier and it was a nice change of scenery. Found parking a cross the street, we were promptly greeted and seated, I had made reservations and everything went smoothly. To eat we had the Ahi tostada, fried chicken and the patatas, everything was delicious! To drink I had a Spanish red blend and my hubby had an IPA, both drinks were good. We always enjoy a meal at Phlight, what's not to like. We've never ordered anything that we didn't enjoy. Weirdly though, I have been ordering the pickle tacos and loving them! Sounds weird, I know, but they just hit the spot. I like the ambience. It's lively and slightly noisy but it's got a great energy that makes me feel cozy and comfortable. I would give it five stars but I think it is a little expensive for what you get. Could be better value for money. Despite the fact that others around us seemed to have a hard time navigating the menu and ordering, the choices they offer are exceptional and you can see that they've thought out each of the ingredients in every dish. We had the special stone fruit salad, two "purple rain" empanadas, the bone marrow rajas, and the paella. Solid and yummy fare! Located off the main strip of restaurants and nightlife in Whittier is this pleasant small plate establishment with some fine cooking. There is a paid lot across the street, but street parking was easy to find the night we went. Because it was Valentine's Day weekend, they were accepting reservations, so we got in no problem. Even though it was full when we got there, I can say that tables flipped pretty quickly, and by the time we were leaving there were a few empty tables. The wait is not bad at all. Service was friendly, but to be honest, they only had one waitress doing all the tables. They clearly needed a second waitress, as the hostess and someone from the kitchen had to help deliver plates. They also somehow ran out of steak knives, which was lame since we ordered a steak dish and had to use a butter knife to cut it. The wine glasses are pricey and have a very small pour. The sangria was the way to go, with a large pour (because it also has fruit juice and such in it - I know). Food: Empanadas - We got the ground beef, which was actually shredded beef. Unfortunately, this was the one big failure of the night. It was the most bland empanada I ever tasted. No flavor whatsoever. Wouldn't order again. Then came the Flat Iron Steak - if you see other Yelper's photos, it used to come with a side of rice. No more. Just a teeny tiny steak. The steak was delicious, but it is not a great deal at such a small portion. If they still had sides on the plate, it would help to legitimize the price. The phlight burger - A very tasty, good burger with fries. This is a winner. Shrimp Diablo - Another winner for flavor and, while my photo may not show it properly, there was a decent amount of shrimp. I think maybe 8. The taste was delicious. Double Fried Chicken - this was hands down the best value at the place. I believe it was 3 large chicken breasts cut in half (so six halves total) over some kale and a delicious gravy. Would order this again for sure. Basically, it's a very solid restaurant. Just know portions are in fact small for the most part. So your bill will be a little high. And, don't expect a fast dinner, as they seem to be understaffed as far as service goes. But, all in all, I would recommend going, and I will be back. read more
