It's a super sweet little bakery with very kind and knowledgeable staff, and baked treats that make you feel like you're having high tea at a teddy bear picnic. Yikes. Some unfortunately inedible cake. We ordered the cappuccino chocolate cake for a family birthday. Not only does it not fit in the box they provide (don't they know their own cakes' sizes??) but it also tastes... quite rough The cake itself is dense and weirdly lemony and would be fine with a non-coffee flavored cream. It's just fine but not something I'd seek out. But the coffee cream is absolutely off in consistency and flavor. Just an odd watered down texture and flavor tastes a little ... burnt? Strangest coffee dessert I've ever had and I love coffee desserts. Most of us left our slices entirely untouched - unheard of in our family. My partner loves butter tarts and he puts Phipps on the top of his favorite list. It's even better after warming it up a little at home so that the center is gooey again. I personally like that we can buy just one so I can then choose something more aligned to my tastes. I had the almond croissant recently and they are generous with the amount of almond slivers stuffed inside the croissant. Usually the inner filling is too sweet, but Phipps strikes the right balance between the sweet filling, croissant and almonds. Each pastry is around $3.5, so it can add up quickly! I like the little sitting area (bistro chairs and tables, a picnic table, couple Muskoka chairs) set up out front so you can enjoy your treat in the sunshine on a good day. read more

This bakery is heaven for the cake lovers! Especially their well known Dad's and Mom's chocolate cakes. The taste/quality is very good. Also sometimes they have some samples on the side to try if you are unsure of what to get. The interiors and also the items you get here are fancy and unique except for one fact that never have specialty coffee drinks here. The cappuccino was so bad and also the strawberry baked good I had seemed hard/not fresh at Al (hence 3 stars) but otherwise they deserve 5. Very unique and eclectic place. Walking in, it will remind you of nothing as it just is that different. It does however give me a bit of a 90's feel based on their non-commercial aesthetic and "anything goes" decor and that they offer a bit of everything (bakery, cafe, hot table, even flowers and gifts). I've been in a couple times and I've only ever ordered individual-sized bakery items. I think one was an apple crumble and the other was a tart. Both times I picked up an Americano which was made right and on a proper machine. I've only ordered a pasta salad from their hot table/salad bar area. I did also sample a rice and veggie dish too. Based on those and the appearance of the food I saw, they make everything from quality ingredients and lots of flavour. I believe they are vegetarian too - though not vegan as a heads up. As you would expect, prices aren't terribly cheap for good food and where rent is probably quite high. But I still felt what I paid was fair and it's nice to have such a unique and independent place like this - which also fits in with the other businesses in the area. Hopefully the LRT (once completed) doesn't drive rent too high. read more

I ordered a cake online for my mother's birthday well in advance of her actual birthday. We had everyone coming over at 5:30PM and had dinner plans at 6PM. While placing the order online, I only had the option of a 12-4:30PM delivery window which I thought would give enough time for it to arrive. It didn't have an option to get it delivered earlier but I thought even if it was late based on traffic, I'd have enough time before people arrive. I made sure to call ahead of time on the day of delivery (12PM to be exact) to ensure that the cake would arrive in time. The lady I spoke to on the phone said the cake was still at the bakery because the driver hadn't picked it up yet but she ensured me it'd arrive between the delivery window. At exactly 4:30PM when my cake was SUPPOSED to arrive, I receive a text from a random # saying my cake delivery is experiencing delays and should arrive before 5:50PM.. 5:30PM rolls around and still no cake.. I tried calling the # that texted me and no answer so I texted asking the ETA of the cake and got a response saying the driver is 24 mins out based on his GPS. At this point, I was irritated because we were late for our reservations and didn't feel that there was anything to justify why the cake was 2 hours late. My thinking is why provide a 4.5 hr delivery window when you are going to be late regardless. I specifically paid extra for delivery when I could've just picked it up myself had I known it was going to arrive so late. The person I was texting tried to say that I wasn't paying extra for delivery when clearly I did. I was also told that I wouldn't get any reimbursement for the delivery charge because it is stated on their delivery policy. No where does it stated no reimbursements or refunds - it only says that there may be delayed deliveries based on traffic, snow and weather conditions. I understand that there are other deliveries that are scheduled with the driver because I've worked in the industry before, but given traffic in the GTA doesn't give ANY excuse as to why it would be 2 hours late! In the end, nothing was done, only numerous arguments back and forth ending in no resolution and countless amounts of unapologetic apologies and "have a great weekend". Just wanted to give everyone a heads up that's planning to order from Phipps that you shouldn't bother paying extra for delivery cause it'll never arrive in time and their customer service sucks. The only good thing was that the cake was wrapped nicely for my mom. Other than that, the cake was mediocre for the price I paid - definitely not worth $73 dollars for a cake + delivery. Moving forward, I'd rather spend my money elsewhere for a much better tasting cake. read more

The staff was really nice and patient when I started to ask her about almost every single baked good they have on display if there is raisins inside.. believing me that I am allergic to raisins... Ordered the Park Avenue Mousse last week for Mother's Day. I screwed up the dates on my order and they accommodated the correction without hesitation. The cake/mousse! Oh man, it was amazing. While it is a little pricey, it is so worth it! I have a little left over and it is taking every fibre of my being to not slam my face into it! When there I picked up some everything cookies too, these are the best cookies to have with a nice coffee. I've been shopping at Phipps since I moved to this neighbourhood 12 years ago. In my humble opinion, there are not many bakeries in the city that can compete with Phipps' butter tarts. I almost always bring 4 or 6 as a gift when I go to dinner parties. You actually save a little when you purchase 6. Every person that has received Phipps' tarts as a gift has pretty much lost their mind over these delicious sweet gems. It's also great that they are across from the LCBO. This makes for a convenient pairing of dessert and wine etc. Last week, I threw a surprise birthday party for my wife. I decided to support my local bakery and order a cake from Phipps. I loved most of their cake options on their website but none of them had exactly what my wife loved in a cake so I visited the store in person. The woman who helped me was fantastic. She was friendly and knowledgeable and helped me create a somewhat customized version of their in house cakes. The end result was a delicious 4 layer chocolate and vanilla cake with a light raspberry buttercream filling. It was light and sweet and a huge success at the party... especially with my wife. The exterior of Phipps just pulls you in. I was walking along Eglinton after work and peeked inside... tons and tons of sweets. All sweets except for the hard candy is made on site. It's a shame I didn't have my camera with me to prove just how many sweets that are offered at Phipps. This bakery is not limited to sweets; they sell ready made dinners and sandwiches. I had class that night so I bought their fresh hummus wrap. For $3.99, you get two big pitas with hummus, red pepper and basil leaves. It was so filling and so good! If you're not in a rush, there's also a little cafe in the back of bakery. I haven't experienced dining at Phipps yet, but I want to ... soon! Yay! I'm a fan. read more

This review is based solely on preordered cake twice (yes, it was that good, we went back for a subsequent birthday) and their amaretti cookies. We have tried their vanilla cake with strawberry buttercream. First time it was for myself and I requested extra buttercream which they accommodated without slapping on any cost. Second order was for my daughter so I didn't request extra buttercream and it was even tastier. We now know the way to go for my next birthday! I have to avoid the area even though there is an SDM and Global pets located conveniently close as their amaretti cookies are to die for. They are cake-like in texture and one bag is never enough but totally worth the price considering the high cost of almond flour (aka ground almonds). Walking into this small and dark - dark in a good way - place takes you into a another sensory world. Fresh baked breads, cakes, cookies and croissants are just a few of the things you can get here. There is also a section for both fresh and frozen meals - Mac & Cheese; Pasta; Tuna Casserole among other dishes. The great thing is that they come in different portion sizes - the one for the single gal is about $7.50 - which is good for 2 lunch portions (for me anyways!). The cakes are Martha Stewart lovely but also a bit pricey - but being on Eglinton?Avenue area it isn't surprising . I selected a few chocolate croissants and some butter tarts (caramel and chocolate). Both were nice but nothing that blew my mind. Saweet Jeahusus. This place has ruined me. Completely ruined me. They have set the bar so high for other bakeries, I am afraid that noone else will compare. This cute store lured me in when I needed to pick up a sweet treat for my God Daughter. Outside of Phipps there is a huge wooden ice cream cone. The store is dressed up in a fashion that I believe to be the ultimate sweet factory. Inside, the store is laid out as an ice cream parlour, take out counter and retail store up front, and a cafe in the back. Just try to not try a couple of things....I dare you! The chocolate cupcake...OMG....OMG...so good. Moist cake, and delish buttercream icing. I loved the gold cupcake liners too, added such a special finish. I also tried their cinnamon bubka. God damn. That describes it. The cinnamon is sweet, the texture supple, the exterior a little crunchy and sticky. It is heaven. The shop has decent hours, being open till 9 pm on Fri and Sat nights! read more

I went to Phipps in search of excellent pumpkin pie after an extensive google search for all the top places. On the first day I went they had *sadly* sold out and were in the process of making more. I consoled myself with a caramel pecan butter tart that was delightfully tasty. I found myself at Yonge and Eg the very next day and decided to try my luck again...success! I bought two of the medium tarts, one with pumpkin seeds and one without, and my roommate and I shared them. They were both fantastic and I will definitely be going back for more. Aside from the delicious pies there are a lot of other tasty-looking baked goods displayed in the counter. The layout is very quaint and cute too as the bakery doubles as a home wares store and also has a sandwich/salad bar right at the back. Another plus...very friendly, helpful staff! read more

I really love this bakery. They have a large selection of full-size cakes, pies, squares, etc and a slightly smaller (but still significant) selection of single-serve items. My favorites are the chocolate pecan butter tarts (amazing!) and the slices of lemon shortbread pie. Phipps really knows its pastry. They also have a cafe in the back with a small seating area and a lunch counter, which serves good and reasonably priced snacks and a selection of hot foods. If you are looking for muffins, they are in the back section, although they are often sold out by noon. The staff are reasonably friendly. This is one popular place on a Saturday afternoon. It was difficult to squeeze in beside the many families and children and strollers packed inside this little bakery - but when I'm determined to try some sweets, I'll persevere. We tried: double chocolate cookie, oatmeal chocolate chip cookie, rocky-road-esque cookie, chocolate chip cookie, caramel walnut butter tart, and the mini apple crumble tart. When my sweet tooth calls, I listen. The best of the cookies was definitely the double chocolate. It was a little thicker and chewier than the others, and had great chocolatey flavour. I really liked the texture of the others as well, but they weren't anything special when it came to flavour. I was actually a little disappointed with the oatmeal chocolate chip because I barely tasted or saw any chocolate in it. The butter tart was great, but the real standout of the bunch was the apple crumble. That thing was sinfully delicious. It was crisp, lots of cinnamon, and the crumble topping was just divine. So good. All in all, try to avoid it on a busy weekend afternoon, but definitely give it a try! read more

I was little surprised to see such glowing reviews for Phipps. Granted, it has a cute storefront and 2 tables on the sidewalk (which is great on a nice day) but there are better bakeries in the area. Coffee is good but get it in a to-go cup, as I was served a cup with lipstick on it... and the girl was none to perturbed about it (!) The ginger cookie is quite good, but they don't seem to sell it any more. Last time they had it, was in packages of 6 and they refused to sell me one. Also, they only sell pans of brownies, no individual squares. The butter tarts are very sweet (too sweet for my liking.) The lemon shortbread pie was disappointing: the shortbread was not buttery (almost amateurish in execution) and the filling was very synthetic. While large, the scones are lacking in flavour and texture. The cake slice looked better than it tasted (very average, with the icing far below average.) Phipps adds character to this small commercial strip, but the treats are for those who like grocery store packaged baked goods. read more

I have lived in the neighbourhood for 16 years. I admit to not having been to Phipps in the last fourteen of those years. It looks nice. Enticing little place. But the baked goods are mediocre at best and, what really put me off, is that they were stale. First time around, I shrugged. Stuff happens. Tried again. Stale again. Gave them one last chance, I told them about my previous problems and I specifically asked the woman at the counter if the cake was fresh. She said it was made today. Nope. I first heard about this bakery thanks to my mother in law who is a regular cake purchaser there. They have one of the best carrot cakes I have ever had! Rich; delicious and moist! Phipps didn't hit a 5 star for me as I noticed there wasn't very much carrot in the carrot cake! There was no greeting or communication that we will get to you soon. The lady being served was ordering a ton of items and had never ending questions about items in the showcase. This went on for quite awhile and I just got disgusted and left because there was another staff person there who was aware there were two other customers waiting. This second staff person was at the front counter when I arrived but took off to the back food counter and busied herself there. It's nice to know customers are not your top priority. This was my first and last visit here ever. There are many other excellent bakeries where I am not subjected to this type of neglectful customer service. read more
