Holy cow did this place ever exceed the hype. I always see this spot pop up on "best butter tart" lists but I hadn't had a chance to pop in. I finally made the pilgrimage and wow. The snickers butter tart was out of this world. Down to every detail like the peanuts being roasted... it's so much more that sweet stuff in a pastry shell. Sheesh! The seeded sourdough was delicious, and I'm still enjoying the amazing banana bread granola. I can't wait to try the other wild things I saw there like the everything croissant. After hearing about Circles And Squares for a long time, I finally got to try it! My partner and I stopped by on a Friday and the place was packed. Everything on the menu looked so good and the pastries looked divine in the display case but we ended up getting a classic butter tart (ive heard such good things and plus it's their mascot so it has to be good), a banana matcha latte and a strawberry matcha latte. The first floor is pretty tight, but they have seating on the second floor. The butter tart was soo cute and it was quite a hefty size compared to other butter tarts. It was not too sweet and super oozy in the middle, which is what I love! The banana matcha latte tasted so much like banana bread. It was delicious, though the matcha flavour isn't as strong because of the banana syrup. The strawberry matcha latte was also pretty solid. I am so happy I finally got to try this place and will be back to try their other drinks and goodies. read more

Update: tried their hot honey pizza foccacia and cinnamon roll and both were fantastic. The hot honey pizza foccacia had some tomato sauce and pepperonis on top. The foccacia was soft and fluffy and oily in a good way. It was delicious reheated. The cinnamon roll I got was quite fresh and the frosting on top was generous and delicious. The pecan butter tart continues to be everything. Will definitely return to try more of their other baked goodies! read more

All the pastries and baked goods looked delicious and it was hard to choose but I settled with a bag of thumb print cookies (walnut base with raspberry jam), a s'mores butter tart (and they had quite a few buttertart flavours), and gingerbread scones for the festivities. The cookies were soft and crumbly and went well with the raspberry jam. I could definitely devour an entire bag in one sitting!! The buttertart was very decadent and a bit too sweet for me but flavours were done well and the tart crust was nice. The scones came with a sweet glaze that complemented the scone well since the scone itself was not very sweet. Gingerbread flavours were very prominent and I would get this again for sure. At the cafe, I got their special sandwich (turkey with cranberry sauce on sourdough bread) and a flat white. Coffee was good but I loved the sandwich!! I've seen a lot of hype around Circles and Squares' butter tarts and pastries in general, and as a pastry lover who loves bakeries, I really wanted to give it a try. It's safe to say it didn't disappoint! Although I don't really like butter tarts (sorry), we still got the biscoff one and the earl grey blueberry scone. If you're a fan of butter tarts, you'll definitely love this one - the dough is flaky and the filling is super rich and sweet, topped with biscoff syrup. But personally, I enjoyed the scone more. There was a perfect amount of earl grey icing and it complemented the blueberry very well! The texture was perfect too. With a cappuccino, it was honestly the perfect pairing (I wish I had a pic). The servers were also very sweet and the place itself is cute. They have a couple of barstools downstairs and an upstairs area with more seating if you're planning on staying for a while. They also have fridges filled with some prepared food AND their frozen baked goods (including the scones!) that you can buy and bake at home to have them fresh! I'm so excited to go back to try other pastries (probably no more butter tarts for me though). read more

Known for their award winning butter tarts, I dropped by the bakery on a Sunday afternoon for a treat. The bakery has a variety of items for sale, including packaged baked goods, salads, desserts, cakes, bread, and frozen items as well. The pastries and baked goods are displayed neatly near the cashier when you order. They have window seating on the ground floor and additional seating upstairs on the second floor to enjoy your pastries and coffee. I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon. The set up of the line was confusing as the customers before me didn't follow the direction of the line. The staff at the cashier didn't seem like she was having a good day (you could tell by her body language and the way she was talking to customers). After waiting quite a while for the customer in front of me to finish ordering, I opted to grab an original butter tart and a cortado. Waited a bit for my drink as staff decided to make the drink of the customer behind me first. I sat down near the window on the main floor to enjoy my items. My cortado was made well. This was my first time having the butter tart at Circle and Squares. Was this award winning to me? Unfortunately not. The tart was quite big but the crust of the butter tart just felt basic and the butter filling was a too sweet for me. It was also very toffee like where the filling kept sticking to my teeth. Sadly, I've had way better butter tarts elsewhere in the city. Circle and Squares does not live up to the hype. Overall, decent coffee but the butter tarts are not the best in Toronto (there are way better butter tarts at other bakeries!). Stopped by hoping for a classic pumpkin pie, but I'm so glad they didn't have it! I opted for their Pumpkin Cheesecake instead, and honestly, it was even better than pie,truly incredibly amazing. If you visit, this is a must-try item. I also grabbed a breakfast sandwich, which was very tasty, and I appreciated that they proactively offered to warm it up for me. The service here is genuinely great. My only slight miss was the Pumpkin Spice Latte. I asked for it half-sweet, but it was still a bit too sweet for my personal taste. However, the quality of the cheesecake and sandwich more than made up for it! The café has a great vibe, with seating both downstairs and upstairs. While I wouldn't call it a perfect workspace for a long day, it's an excellent, cozy spot to hang out for 30 minutes to an hour with friends. I think I've been here more than a dozen times and it's rarely been a letdown. To me, the biggest appeal of Circles and Squares is the variety of baked goods. The brownies are great, the butter squares are decadent, and the muffins are all good. On top of that, there is a constant rotation of seasonal goods to keep the lineup fresh, which bolsters their usual stock. The service is also good too - if asked about allergens they pull up an entire binder of ingredients to triple check they're giving you the right information. They also help with small things, like packing into boxes that you bring. On the flipside, I think their espresso drinks are just okay, and the savoury stuff is not for me. The prices have also slowly crept up over the past year, but that's understandable given modern circumstances. While I lament the loss of Good Good that came before it, I'm extremely satisfied with Circles and Squares and will be a patron for the foreseeable future. read more

Stopped by and sat down here on a sunday late morning after a run, and the line was long! Rightfully so given their selection of pastries and coffee/teas. Line moved fairly quick, so don't be discouraged by it. Sitting area however is a little scarce. There are many tables upstairs but they were fully occupied, we got lucky with one table left for 2. Downstairs bar-style sitting has a few spots if you just need a quick perch. I got myself an iced americano with a Stuffed everything bagel croissant. I visited so often in the lead up to the holidays that I expected to get a security alert on my bank card. In addition to the award winning butter tarts, Circles and Squares can be counted on to deliver a rotating selection of fresh baked goods, bread, a variety of sandwiches and salads and good coffee. I've had, and can recommend, the flourless breakfast cookie, date square, croissant breakfast sandwiches and pain au chocolat. They're also known for their cinnamon buns, which I believe are solely available on the weekend. Staff are friendly and hard-working.
