The lunch special is an awesome deal! Decadent dessert included.

When you enter Gerhard's, you're greeted with display cases of home made cookies, tempting cakes and handmade European chocolate truffles. Place your order at the counter, have a seat (There are tables for 2s and two for 4s), and they'll bring your food to you. Decorated in granny chic with tea pots, doilys and hand crafted dolls on display (you can purchase the ones you like): you'll wonder if there is a little old lady in the kitchen whippin up somethin special just for you. WE ORDERED: - California Turkey wrap was yummy. - Lentil soup was outstanding! It was flavored with curry and had bits of squash in it. - Ham and cheese quiche was light and creamy YUM! Best to eat them when they're just out of the oven in the morning. - Caesar salad side was ok. - Chocolate (mousse) Cheesecake was perfectly light with just the right amount of sweetness: a perfect way to end our meal. - Chocolate truffle sample - rich with decadent chocolate. Simple, unpretentious food in a homey atmosphere with attentive service: this is my kind of place.

Excellent service! I called in half an hour earlier to place an order fa sugar free 10 inch chocolate cake and asked them to add fresh strawberries and "Happy Birthday" message for my manager at work, and the add-ons did not cost any extra money! I went in to pick up and everything was already packed for me and the staff showed me the finished product, which was exactly how I wanted it. The box came along with a golden stamp on top and the Cafe itself looks rather European and meek inside. I might come back one day before or after shopping at Scarborough Town Centre nearby for a cup of tea and desserts. The prices were all reasonable, too. My manager is a sugar-free diet and has not eaten any cakes for a few years now. Was he ever shocked and amazed at how delicious this cake tasted even without sugar added! The cake was gone in less than 10/15 minutes!! Afterwards, everyone kept thanking me for getting the cake and how guilty-free they felt after eating it!! The cake was so delicious!! Definitely coming back another day for this same sugar free chocolate cake. Hopefully by then, they will have another flavour available.

    No sugar 10 inch cake

The only place I could find that sold 10 inch sugar free cakes. I needed it asap for a birthday I was attending and this was perfect! Not only did it taste delicious and soft, but it was surprisingly sweet! Whatever they used as a sugar substitute, was amazing. I called earlier that day and asked for a 10 inch which they said they probably wouldn't have it done that day at 5 pm so I settled for an 8 inch which they did have. They called back about 10 mins later to say they do have it. Great customer service!

    Carrot cake so good

Woohoo this is my new place to go get cakes from!! Got two cakes for 45 people each from here for a reasonable price, but the quality was top notch! People are still contacting me about the delicious cheese cake and carrot cake a week later almost. This is the new goto spot on the east end for me and my family for special event cakes.

Gerhard's Cafe for sure is a breath of fresh air in Scarborough. I am so glad that this little cafe exist that serve simple lunch/brunch, decent coffee and choices of home made desserts. Walking through the door of Gerhard's Cafe does makes me feel I am in a cafe somewhere in Europe.. ok the only thing they all speak English here.. :). First thing you see is the whole display case of chocolate.. then the next display case of cakes... and the next display case of cookies! Talking about sugary overdose! :P You can have your sweet as a takeout and eat in. They do provide table services so you order from the counter and they will bring it to your table then you pay them on your way out at the cashier. My silly question of "Any cakes that taste good but not too sweet?" was answered with a few helpful suggestions... Almost want to ask "Any cakes the taste good but not fattening?" The problem here is none of the cakes are labelled so it is a guessing game unless they look obvious..(blueberry cheesecake) Poor lady was bombarded with zillion questions until I decide on the White Chocolate Mousse Cake ($4.95) with a cappuncion ($2.45). Try not to think they use real whipping cream, real butter and how much calories you consuming will be the wisest thing to do here. The Chocolate Mousse cake is really dense in texture and intense in favour.. as the lady point out real chocolate not powder was used in making the cake. The size here is really generous I could not really finish.. They do offer High Tea during the afternoon which for the photos on their website looks really elegant and traditional. Might have to come back for another trip for that! They also offer lunch specials menu, but I would definitely recommend to try all their cakes and pastries instead. They accepts Visa and Mastercard.

    Treats in beautiful boxes

Best Takeout Afternoon Tea in TO! I ordered afternoon tea takeout purely for the convenience of their location (near #401 and McCowen). Afternoon tea is a rare find outside the core of Toronto. I truly didn't expect much. Was I surprised! First, the treats for each set came in two beautiful boxes and tied up with a bow! Each edible morceau is safely separated with diverder inside so they arrived in pristine state after a rough ride in traffic. Second, everything was super fresh. (All afternoon tea enthusiast dread dried sandwiches and stale cakes.) For purists, the scones were not the traditional short bread type but seem to be a version of crusty croissant. However, none of us complained as we all loved the strawberry compote (again unusal) that came with them. The last chart topper was the dessert, light, super moist with flavour depth from two different kind of thinly sliced cakes, lemond curd and whipped cream. The cafe at the unassuming plaza may not be where you would go sit down for afternoon tea, but their takeout is beyond doubt a winner! The lady who took the order over the phone was very helpful and the staff at the cafe was friendly. Who knew Scarborough has such wonder to offer?! Apparantely American writer Tyler Cowen did. He called Scarborough the dining capital. I won't be scouring the area for other food but just happy to find such a gem outside of Toronto's dangerous parking ticket zone, and will defintitely order takeout hightea from them again.

    almond cookie $1.75

Gerhard's Cafe amazing.......however I was really thrown off when I entered. There were so many elderly ladies drinking tea! This must be their regular hangout spot or something and word must have spread that this is the place to be. One thing that really disappointed me right from the get go was that there were no labels or prices for the desserts on display. There was only a sign at the door with some lunch options with sandwiches and soup. There was also no menu for drinks so I honestly felt like leaving right when I entered. Luckily I decided to stay otherwise I would have missed out on some amazing desserts. Ordered the following: Mochaccino $2.79 - nothing worth mentioning Mocha flavored cake $4.95 - not overly sweet, soft and pretty decent (3/5 stars) Almond cookie $1.75 - nothing worth mentioning Blue Berry Cheese cake $5.95 - AMAZING!!! - blue berries were very fresh, not overly sweet, great cheese flavor and perfect creamy texture (5/5 stars) I saw another table have high tea with all sorts of little desserts. I really, really wish they had better labeling. Maybe I'm extremely blind or the other customers are regulars and know something that I don't but there is definitely something that I'm missing. I did not bother asking for a menu but instead ordered what I saw on display. I will be back again for the cheese cake

    Strawberry meringue cake

My friend's love this place and they took me here. It's in a strip mall close to Scarborough town centre. It's definitely quaint... and has a old world feel to it (ie. not modern or renovated) . The food does kind of taste like eating at grandmas...simple, no frills, home cooking . I had the spinach and ham quiche, it was well done but since it was microwaved to warm up it slightly stuck to the plate. Still a nice slice of quiche with a standard Ceasar salad. The quiche and salad was $9.99. The roast beef on a kaiser at $7.99 looked fresh and balanced meat to bun ratio. The desserts stand out. The strawberry meringue cake was not very sweet at all, just enough to bring out the flavours....and actually quite nice. My friends got the sugar free chocolate cake that was really a very mildly sweetened chocolate mousse in texture. I normally shy away from sugar free products of any sort, but this was actually really great for a sugar free product, very creamy, great chocolate flavour, and wonderfully balanced. Pretty much a diabetic's dream dessert. The cake slices are about $5.50 a slice . It's definitely not inexpensive for the location and decor, but if you enjoy a very unpretentious quite small cafe with old world uncomplicated food, you can get that in a sit down cafe at the price of takeout. Also was wonderfully nice to kids and kid friendly, just call in first because they only have 1 table of 4.....the other tables all seat 2. I didn't love it, but this place does have it's merits.

I can't comment on the cafe itself because it has been over 8 yrs since I've visited the place, however I recently tried their strawberry meringue cake. Compared to Maxim and Lucculas, I found it had too much cream and not enough meringue, there really was only crumbled meringue on the sides of the cake. It was ok, but not the best. However, the cake was fresh and it's good cream.

    High tea option #1

Just went for the first time for their high tea since I live closeby. Cute and quaint little place with rustic theme decor. They offer a few options for high tea platters, we picked the simplest option which comes with egg salad and cucumber finger sandwiches, scones with jam and whipped cream, and strawberries with whipped cream and a piece of Millefeulle/Napoleon. It also comes with brewed coffee or choose from their selection of teas. The food tastes excellent and very fresh! Portion is small but that's to be expected of high tea. We also each had a slice of cake, which is what they are known for. They had a large selection to choose from, I had their raspberry chocolate mousse cake and my sister had their sugar free chocolate mousse. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!! Not too sweet and oh so light! Soo good. Unfortunately due to some miscommunication with a new waitress there we didn't find out that they are not Part of the high tea until we pay. Overall we will definitely come back again to taste more of their cakes :) Really happy that it is so close to my home so can come back more often now!

Specially like the dark forest cake, full of chocolate flavour but not too sweet

They assisted in getting a high chair for my baby and helping me find seating while pushing a stroller which helped greatly. The presentation of food was also amazing. I just found both my hot drink and food I ordered lacking in flavor and just average. I ordered the hojicha latte and the Wanoka omurice. Both I could barely taste anything and I know hojicha should be a rich, earthy/toasty/nutty green tea flavor but I couldn't taste any of it, just mostly steamed milk. However my friend really enjoyed her matcha latte so maybe some drinks are better than others or dependent on who makes it. The omurice also was average, the texture/consistency was great but just lacking in flavor. I also ordered a tuna onigiri that also was lacking in flavor and nothing special. However, I did find their desserts to be really great. Found their tofu cream cheese cake and green tea chiffon cake really delicious. Their prices also were a bit overpriced. Perhaps it's best to go to this place for drinks and dessert and skip out on their food.

My first visit was a few months ago. After meeting with friends for lunch at Samosa Fusion, I got a cold milk tea next door at HK Garden. It's where I learned that HK Garden and Samosa Fusion have the same owners. Cool! You can get samosas at either place. However, for cold milk tea, you can only get it at HK Garden and it is delicious. The folks make the cold milk tea with a touch of sugar, but it's barely noticeable. The milk tea is perfect. I loved it so much that I went back yesterday to get one for dinner. It was consistent and hit the spot on a hot day. I wanted to get some food from here before I wrote a review. I found this eatery on Uber Eats and decided that a dinner order would be perfect. I got the soft pork rib noodle soup. It was BOGO on Uber Eats. I got an estimated time that my order was ready. It was perfect getting there from downtown Markham. The place had my order ready ahead of schedule, which was nice. This eatery is located at Dynasty Centre, which is a plaza with lots of businesses and eateries. It was quiet at around 5:30 pm on a Monday. I parked fairly close to the restaurant and walked in. There are two doors to walk through before you're in the restaurant. A woman saw me and immediately went to fetch my order. It was almost as if she didn't care to hear my name. She asked me to go into my app to swipe that I received my order. That request was a first for me, but I was happy to do it. I got my food in a plastic bag. I thanked her and left with my food. I placed it safely in my car and drove home. I took the broth and added it to my bowl of noodles. I loved the veggies. I wish that I had more of them. They were perfectly cooked. The soft pork ribs were meaty and flavourful. They were delicious. The downside were the noodles. They were slightly overcooked and a bit mushy. It was a shame, but still edible. My bowl of noodles had green onion. It needed more of it. I have one more bowl to enjoy. We'll see if I feel the same way. I'd return to get some more HK-style items off the menu. The sandwiches look yummy. I'll also get another cold milk tea because it's awesome. (159)

Under new management. New owners. New staff. Indian-Chinese menu…read more As a long ago customer, many years ago I enjoyed HK Garden. They used to be a good Hong Kong style cafe with good quality food, always served hot. Then there was a change of management. Wanting to keep an open mindset, I came back here to give it another go after my last order was not acceptable - my curry beef brisket with rice tasted like an odd amalgam of sauces mixed with cleaning products and dishwashing soap. I was completely perturbed that I was eating cleaning products with my food yet once again wanted to give them another chance. When our food arrived at the table today the toast was ice cold and the hot dog was hard crunchy, overcooked, shrivelled up and burned, I wondered if there was a pattern here. It was not the fault of our waitress but perhaps an oversight of the kitchen staff. Kudos to our great waitress who went above and beyond to correct the situation by addressing it with the cook and she made sure things went right. She was kind, professional, hard-working and an asset to their staff. The verdict? Although service was polite and staff were professional, the food quality assurance was not the same as before, since it's not run by the former staff and owners. End of an era.
