I always come here and it's one of my go-to coffee spots in the SCV. Parking is always easy since there's a big lot, which makes mobile ordering and quick pick-ups really convenient. I wanted to try a new spot, so I came in to grab a hot chai with almond milk. The barista was super friendly and helped me customize my drink to how I wanted it. She offered to have them make it creamy so it wasn't just straight milk poured in, so I went with what she suggested. I did say without sweetener as I'm not a big fan of my chai being sweet. When my order to go was ready, the barista who made it asked me if it was to my liking, I tried it and it didn't taste very good so I asked her to put some sweetener in it, she added brown sugar. It honestly didn't do much to the flavor, the tea tasted like they threw a black tea bag in it, couldn't taste this "creamy latte" they were aiming for and it looked as if they added a splash of milk in it as the color was off. I had no earthly idea about Philz' existence until some friends suggested we head there for an afternoon pick-me-up. Surprisingly, it was in the spot where I had lamented the departure of a trusted coffee place where I could order half asleep and get something predictable. There was little predictable about Philz, my first time there (sure to go back now that I get the vibe and the plan). I had a moment that is rare for me: frozen in indecision, trying to decipher the unfamiliar system on the menu -- wondering if this was a senior minute thing or the novelty of a unicorn in Valencia? Luckily, my friends came to the rescue: pick your strength (medium) and the flavors you like in coffee (rarely any, maybe butterscotch), and the size (better be small in case I hated it). So, when I saw words like brown sugar, maple, caramel, I knew I was on firmer ground at last. Got the small size of Filtered Soul; would have loved the Silken Splendor but could not wrap my Boomer brain around citrus in it! Anathema! So, the coffee was excellent. The flavors natural and subtle, thank the gods. I take it with milk, no sugar and this was almost whipped, latte-esque and super smooth. Not burning hot, just right. Really, brewed and poured to perfection. So, why not a 5? I think the place is too bright. Food places should signal clean and bright, of course (and this Philz is both), but coffee is warm, golden, glowing -- cream walls with more brown, orange, and even greenish accents (like the cup color scheme) would make it a better spot to hang in, for me. Also, it is a bit pricey since I think my brand at home is superb and cheaper because I do it myself. Nonetheless, it is a 4.8, very close to a 5 star joint. I love Philz, it's my coffee shop of choice all around CA. But at this store specifically, the one I stop by because it's by my parents, does not know what sweet and creamy means. I've coffee rose has been my favorite drink since it was introduced however many years ago but here, it's almost straight coffee. Even at max sweet and max cream, it's just watery and no sweetener at all. Maybe a pinch of brown sugar. And the last time I ordered and picked up in store, there was literally like 10 pieces of ice in it. A it was a large. Every time I come here, since it opened, I go "maybe they've learned by now. I've never heard of Philz Coffee until it was suggested by my son for our afternoon meet up. There was one person ordering at the counter and what appeared to be two people waiting in line. We got behind them and waited. After taking the order, the staff member at the register left. We didn't mind since we were still trying to figure out the menu. After a few minutes a family came up and went straight to the register but then saw us along with the other people, so they asked if we were in line. We said yes, but the people next to us said no -- eh? Apparently, they had already ordered and decided to stand in the ordering line to wait? Anyway....after figuring that out we made our way to the register, the two people realized the confusion they caused so they moved, and the family reset the line back to normal. My issue with that situation was that there were several staff members behind the counter, and no one noticed or cared about the confusion in the line. After finally getting our order in -- two medium cups of the Philtered Soul (house way), coffee cake and almond croissant (both toasted) -- we sat at a table and waited. It didn't seem too long when our order was ready, but I didn't understand why orders were being called to be picked at the high, narrow counter along the walkway to the register. The large, table height counter space at the end is for mobile orders only. Also, the cups of hot coffee were given without lids. You have to ask for it and place it yourself at that higher level. Then we realized that we had to go back to ask for napkins since they don't have them out or give/offer any with your order. It all just seemed chaotic and disorganized. The wait was quite long for the coffee, but it was worth it. The special pour over blends are great and there lots to choose from. No lattes, no cappuccino, and no macchiatos, just a simple cup of coffee with different types of coffee blends and roast made one cup at a time. The only things to adjust are hot or iced, the creaminess and sweetness levels. For anyone's first time here, I suggest getting the Tesora blend creamy/medium sweetness, which is a perfect middle-of-the-road balanced blend. My wife's and I's favorite thing to order is off the menu, called the iced Oatmeal Cookie. It's the Julie's Ultimate/Hazelnut blend with Cinnamon in the filter with creamy/light sweetness.
