Custom special for the boy

Talk about the best Philly is my go-to spot. As someone born and raised in Philly, I can recommend the sandwiches 100%. When I bite into that juicy steak, it brings me back home. Thanks, Philly.

Mushroom Cheesesteak (l) and Philly's Best Cheesesteak (r)

I'm so happy that we live by a Philly's best. They're friendly and helpful with suggestions. Food is always served piping hot and fresh. We normally eat in and it's clean. The hubby loves their food, reminds him of Philly. He gets the mushroom cheesesteak and I get the Philly's best. But don't forget the ketchup and the side of pickles :) I get the fries and nomnomnom. Plenty of parking, right next to coffee bean.

Great place for an authentic philly cheese steak sandwich, eating in, surrounded by a mom'n'pop atmosphere, even though it is a chain. Didn't realize how many Philly's Best sandwich shops there are in Southern California, 19 now per their website (which has a nice writeup about their history), with the first one being founded in Fountain Blue, CA in 1992 . Its popularity must be more than customers that are just Philadelphia transplants. Plenty of parking at this strip mall location, and the place was empty when we came past the lunch rush on a Friday afternoon. It's menu does contain both hot and cold sandwiches. It's a fast food set-up where you stand in-line to peruse the menu sign, then placing and paying for your order. There is a self-serve soda fountain with Coke products, so got a fountain soda ($2.99). The sandwiches are made after your order, so it took about 10 minutes for my name to be called. Went up to grab the sandwiches, and was offered hot peppers and pickles. Was really glad that I said 'Yes'. The thing about regional sandwiches, is they usually grew from local, inexpensive ingredients that could be supplied year round. I've learnt that bread from Amoroso Bakery in Philadelphia is a must for an authentic cheesesteak, and that it's a steak sandwich not a beef sandwich. It's supposed to use quality beef cut meant for steak (like ribeye)...this is very different than our favorite regional Chicago Italian beef, which intentionally uses the toughest cuts of beef, braised very slowly. -- Classic Cheesesteak ($11.49) - beef, bread, cheese. That's all my wife will eat on her hot (never cold) sandwich, and this is exactly what they provide here. -- Philly's Best ($12.49) - always got to get the sandwich that's named after the restaurant itself, right? This also didn't disappoint. The white american cheese had been melted to produce that sticky goo that binds the meat to the bread, to make the eating of the sandwich relatively clean. The cheese is a must here. And the 'steak' meat is very good. Plus the vinegary peppers and pickles helped cut through the richness of the sandwich. I loved this sandwich. -- Cheese fries ($4.99) - really well fried french fries, topped with a generous amount of cheese whiz. I would bet you could ask to replace the cheese on the sandwich with cheese whiz instead (which is a perfectly acceptable version of a cheesesteak). We devoured these. The place is decorated not nearly as much with Philadelphia merch as I was expecting. Maybe the original sandwich shop in Fountain Blue is much more obnoxious with their pride....my personal experience is that Philadelphia sports fans are not shy about their favorite teams, no matter if they are in enemy territory or not. Of course, this is a franchise location...wonder if as a franchise owner, you are REQUIRED to show Philly sports memorabilia on the walls? Was impressed with the value, considering the ingredients and the need to import some pieces from far away. Pretty confident that a sandwich with these ingredients from a non-chain restaurant would be at least 50% more, or be a lot smaller in size/volume. Heck, it compares very well with the cheesesteak sandwich from Jersey Mike's in terms of value, and this is a much better sandwich.

A cheesesteak without cheese? That is what happened to tonight's takeout order. We ordered chicken cheesesteaks online, but substituted provolone for white American cheese, in addition to grilled onions. Once we began eating our sandwiches, we discovered they were completely devoid of grilled onions, and there were only minimal mushrooms, no bell peppers, and no cheese. A call was made, but there was no answer (a message was left). We were hungry, so we ate the dry, cheese-less cheesesteak sandwiches. We have always enjoyed what we received from here, so we hope this was just a bad night for someone there and not a reduction in their quality control.

Philly cheesesteak salad. Really good!!

If you're avoiding carbs but craving a Philly Cheesesteak this is your place! They've got cheesesteak salads that totally satisfied my craving! It's off the traffic circle with plenty of parking. Staff were kind of grumpy but that seems to be the case for every Philly's Best so it's expected. Rest of my group got traditional Philly's with fries and were all happy. Definitely be back since the location closest to me went under few years ago.

The food is great and excellent customer service from the staff. The ambience of the restaurant brings you closer to Philadelphia feeling.

Thankfully, it was ready in about 10 minutes! I ordered the Vegan Vibes sandwich which just like it sounded, was such a vibe! It was loaded with veggies, vegan cheese and a vegan mayo and the bread was very fresh and soft. The veggies were crisp, the avocado was buttery and the vegan cheese was melty and nutty. I really enjoyed the sandwich and felt great after eating it! The ambiance is fun and beachy and I felt transported to an island hut. The seating is comfortable and the restaurant is very bright and clean. I felt very relaxed while being there and loved how they had seating both inside and outside. My brother in law attests to this place saying it's his favorite burger ever as well as the "best…read moreburger place in the world!" So we grabbed a couple of friends and went to Long Beach to check this place out! It is located on a side street but you can find parking in a small lot with the bar that this place is attached to. I'm assuming the bar orders from them to pass the food on to their patrons which is pretty cool imho. Anyways the inside itself is pretty tiny. I forgot to take a picture but it had LA Dodger colored sport figure heads painted on the wall. Pretty cool! (Even coming from an Angels fan) The prices itself are pretty pricey. I had to go for the Mike Tyson Burger. It was $18 for the burger and didn't include any drink or fries which kind of sucks honestly haha. I opted to pay for some fries and drink. Sadly, the soft drink machine is broken here and had to get a can soda. My food came out and please note that the fries come as a basket of fries only, so if you're eating solo and wanted some sides come hungry for sure haha. The burger itself looked really delicious! They had a special sauce on them and really thick patties but how did it taste? It was pretty good! The sauce served with it was delicious and paired well with the pastrami and the beef patties. The burger itself then became pretty messy but overall it was really good. The dudes at the front were really chill and even hooked us up with some ranch when they usually charge. Everyone else in my party enjoyed their food. But was it "the best burger place ever" as my in law claims? No haha. Don't get me wrong it's a really good burger place but the price for my entire meal was around $35. Definitely got what I paid for but I think you can get a quality burger with fries and drink for a way cheaper price. And you know with a working soda machine. I would say get a burger fix here if you got the money for it. The Mike Tyson did definitely knock me out!

My entire food journey started in a Columbia, Maryland food court at The Mall and a grilled Reuben…read moreat the age of 13. Since then the grilled Reuben has been my measuring stick for every restaurant that serves it. It's a must! It shows the attention to detail. It's not a sandwich you can rush. It requires its own time to caramelize and set the flavors up properly. Just like a house made soup, a Grilled Reuben can tell you a lot. And, it just happens to be my favorite sandwich of all time! So. High marks on the store itself. It has a very open air feel, lots of natural lighting, high ceilings and then a hidden court yard behind the shop. It's very clean with lots of colors and art. The music is perfect for the space. The menu is varied and they have both alcoholic drinks and non alcoholic drinks. It's a deli. And they absolutely fill the roll perfectly. And as anyone will tell you, who frequents any deli in the country. What matters is the food. Period. All the niceties mean nothing if the food distant stand up. So... how did they do? Meh. I've had worse. Much worse. I've also had much better. And understand his is my personal opinion. I'm well aware that my comments will not reflect the opinion of everyone. But, the corned beef. They do not cook it in house. It didn't appear to be a brisket although with it being shaved as thinly as it is I don't know if that would help. Brisket corned beer works best when it's nice thick beautiful cuts that break apart and melt in your mouth. But. As you can see in the picture, they don't grill the corned beef but they do pile it pretty darn high. Which is nice. The sauerkraut wasn't grilled. The rye wasn't roasted long enough so the Swiss didn't properly melt and set. Not enough Thousand Island dressing. The rye has the perfect texture and it helps to very nicely. An excellent Jewish rye! The pesto pasta salad was very nice. And it looked as if the other sides were made with an equal amount of attention and love. So high marks there. This is one of those tough reviews because the reality is the atmosphere, the staff and the location are all excellent. The sandwich needs some work. Remember that the Grilled Reuben is the ONLY TRUE American Sandwich. It was created from scratch for the 1942 World's Fair in New York City. It's an original! Treat it with the respect it deserves. And this three star sandwich... of all sandwiches is a hard pass. Sorry. But, if you would ever like to have me come into your restaurant and show you how to serve the best Reuben of your life... just invite me back. I'd love to show you how to make some simple tweaks and turn a meh into a don't miss!

On this Sunday, my wife, her mom, and I made a conscious effort to dine-in for lunch. It ended up being a really good experience. Parking can be found in the dedicated surface lot in the back. The drive-through goes through the same lot, and it was busy. The walk-up was not, with no line. The friendly cashier asked if we wanted to order, and didn't mind at all that I didn't get in line until I knew what to get. It's order and pay, with a cash register probably from the 70's (though they do take credit cards through a separate machine), so no itemized bill here. The food does get delivered to your table (it's a very small dining area with probably 6 booths), and you self-bus (strangely they didn't have a garbage can...instead two used dish containers: one for the reusable baskets and one for the garbage). The order is taken by hand on an old diner type notepad, so asked for the order to be repeated back to me, and the cashier did it was a smile. My mother-in-law treated, and she got a Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich Combo ($11.99) with a Pepsi and fries. It comes with a sauce, so chose thousand island on the side. She really enjoyed it, eating the whole thing and most of her fries. My wife got a plain jr ch. burger ($4.99). I got a 1/4 hamburger ($6.69) with everything on it and a request for extra lettuce (which was ignored...sigh). The lettuce is shredded, and the burger patty is char-broiled on a gas grill. I liked it, definitely reminding me of a whopper in its size and use of charred meat. The smell of burning beef fat can definitely be smelt outside. A small chili cheese fries ($8.69) was delivered as the side with my burger and it was very, very good with a mound of shredded cheese on top. Definitely needed a fork with that. Also got a strawberry shake ($7.29) which we shared. It tasted like it was made from real ice cream, and was great, especially with the large dollop of canned whipped cream on top. What I'll remember about this visit: -- the genuinely kind cashier who also delivered our food, one plate at a time as it was prepared. This meant the food was delivered fresh and hot, and it was our choice if we wanted to wait for all plates to come (which took a little bit) before we started. I much rather have this, than other places where they will wait till all dishes are plated before delivering, often meaning one or two dishes are cold before even coming to the diners. Definitely was the reason why this was bumped up to a five. -- the chili here is the kind I really like, and one of the best I've had in the area. It would have been great even as just a bowl, and was delicious. My wife and I ended up finishing the entire chili-cheese fries, and it was a big portion (and the fries were not the best...wished it had been fried longer).

For a second, I thought it was about to hit. Then I picked it up. I drove to a shaded spot nearby and ate it right away. No long ride home. No delay. Shaboozey's "Good News" on the radio. Burger in hand. Hope leaving the vehicle. The bun was dry, airy and barely warm, almost like a stale croissant. It looked glossy and soft at first, but had no structure and collapsed more with every bite. The closer I got to the center, the colder and stiffer it ate, like it never got properly warmed through. Glossy outside. Cold center. No chew. No bounce. Just bread giving up. For a smash burger, this missed the whole point. There were some browned edges at first glance, but the bite never backed it up. No hard sear. No crisp edge. No beefy crust. Dry patty. Weak seasoning. Odd flaky texture. The bun broke apart in layers, the beef broke with it and every bite got drier as it went. No juice. No snap. No beefy finish. Burger dressing. Mustard. Grilled onions. Pickles. Sharp, rich, sweet, tangy. That setup should wake up a burger. I gave the patty every chance to show up, but there wasn't enough crust, juice or beefy flavor underneath. Just sauce and toppings looking for something to do. Pickup was fine, got the food right away. No issue there. Maybe this was an off day, but I expected the basics: seasoning, structure and a burger that ate as good as it looked.
