While Philly Steaks isn't a place that I think would turn heads in Philadelphia, this review is taking into account the fact that we're in Albuquerque and our cheesesteak options are limited. Omg! This place is delicious! The boyfriend and I were sitting on the couch, hungry, having a hard time deciding what were wanted for dinner. I pulled up the trusty Yelp app and saw this place. Mentioned it to the boyfriend, and our minds were made immediately! I got a philly with green chile and fried onions with provolone. He got a philly with mushrooms and cheese wiz. We were both so happy with our choices! The sandwiches were greasy and delicious! The bread soaked up the grease beautifully and didn't compromise the flavor of the meat! Huge portions! Had enough for a whole other meal! I saw many reviews that started unsanitary cooking and prepping, so I watched like a hawk. The best Philly in Albuquerque. Don't @ me. It just is what it is. Their menu selection combined with their authentic Philly attitude makes this one of the best spots in town. I usually get the mushroom Philly with cheese wiz. If not, I get the chicken Philly with onions and provolone. I always get fries. I recently spent time in Philadelphia and rather than go to a "touristy" joint, I went to a local spot on South Street (some of you might know which one). Getting that cheesy steak-y ache-y right about now? Here's a tip: bring a buddy. As I've previously stated, a legit Philly Cheesesteak is on my lifetime foodie bucket list -- pretty high on the list, actually -- so I cannot claim any understanding of authenticity, although I've known some Eagles fans who say the discussion begins with Cheez Whiz. This biz claims they're rooted in the City of Brotherly Love, and they rock the whiz bang, so that's what I got. Around ten bones gets ya a sammie that absolutely must be split between two people. Throw in a bucket of fries and you might as well bring the family. Seriously, this food is substantial and fairly priced. Especially considering the toppings which, bless them, aren't skimped. From sweet and hot peppers to absolutely solid green chile, your manwich session isn't complete without a lil' heat. Buns are tasteless and soft, the way they should be, and your fingers will drip with grease, again, yes. Oh, and there are hoagies and burgers and... salads. Salads? This is a family that has done a fantastic job at producing the Philly Cheese Steak. If you're an Eagles fan and wear team attire, they'll even give you a discount! That being said, I've been in about 5 times now, and 3/5 times were fantastic. Unfortunately the 2/5 times I went were not even mediocre, and this last time is for this review. I went in on a Saturday at around 1:30pm. They were decently busy, with a couple families eating in and some individuals behind me. I could tell there was some frustration in the kitchen as there was a staff member being lecture and shown how to produce the product. I ordered a traditional steak with sweet peppers and onions, a basket of fries, and proceeded to wait about 15 minutes before anything came out. We had one ticket in front of us, with a family of 4, so we were willing to overlook it. However, my Philly Steak came out warm-cold. I took one bite and didn't see any melted cheese, the peppers were definitely cold, and the only thing semi-warm was the meat. I immediately went to the counter to see if I could get it warmed up, and my friend noted that everyone in the kitchen began touching it without gloves on. It's a little disgusting, but whatever, I'm assuming their hands are sanitized. When I took a look back, it was going straight into the microwave. I was a little disappointed, as the bread would become soft instead of staying somewhat crispy. I would have preferred to wait 10 minutes in the oven, but I'm not sure if they have an oven. I'd assume at the very least a toaster. I don't think they microwaved it long enough, because it was now just warm-medium warm when it came back out. The kitchen staff needs some proper training on making the Cheese steaks. They could have been new, but the owners or managers were clearly the ones I was interacting with. The lady at the counter, and the gentleman in the back who put the sandwich in the microwave, were definitely owners or managers. I'll head back in a couple weeks. Looking forward to it! read more

Ok, i am back again June 19th a month later. The guy cooking has gloves but the owner stepped in and started cooking, N O. G L O V E S, then he goes in back and gets more meat and uses his bare hands to put it on the grill, a recipe for diareiah . His hand contaminated with raw meat, then he grabs the spatula contaminating the handle with raw meat. The next guy with gloves grabs the spatula and contaminates his gloves with raw meat and the bare hands of the owner. Makes me want to puke. BAD BAD BAD. a lot of times owners and managers don't wear gloves because they are the 9new new shift cook was cooking a cheese steak and twirling a piece of cheese in his bare hands. I guess he learned from the unsanitary owner. Ok back again 7-3-18: At Philly Steak on Juan Tabo n of Menaul.. the kid cooking had gloves on. The other kid with no gloves grabs my bun to slice it open with bare hands. I asked why he wasn't wearing gloves when he handled my food. He said he is allergic to the gloves. Then he shouldn't be in that job. The health department doesn't have a policy that if you are alergc you don't have to wear gloves. Adding my 5 star review to all the rest. Hubby loved it when he and I went and today I took a friend from Philly. She loved it also and spent some time talking to the owners about places they both knew from 'back home'. I got a grilled cheese and fries each time and both my husband and friend got the chicken cheesesteak, which they both enjoyed. Fries were very good (crispy) and the onion rings shouldn't be missed. The entire staff is friendly and quite happy to answer any questions. You don't wait long for the food and for the amount of food you get, the price is very reasonable. I really like, what I know so far, as "Philly Steaks". As someone who's never actually been to Philly I can't say I'm entirely qualified to write a review on a Philly staple, but I as someone who puts food in their mouth daily I think I'm qualified enough. This place is good. They have really awesome bread and they cook up the steak, onions, peppers, cheese, and all that good stuff, and they put it in the good bread and they serve it all warm and melty and perfect. They don't just offer the cheese whiz, they have other flavors too, but I don't know why people wouldn't choose to eat a neon colored cheese without being judged when it's offered. The one downside is I think they're skimpy on the whiz, I want to be overwhelmed by cheese goodness, but I might just be one of those weirdos. The one downside is the sandwiches are crazy amounts of meat greasy. It's like your sandwich has the meat sweats. As for their other deli sandwiches I can only describe them as ginormous, like an ungodly amount of cold cuts. A gynecologist couldn't build a better sandwich(too far?). My partner and I got buffalo cheese fries, a philly cheese steak and I got a chicken cheese steak. The buffalo cheese fries were amazing, there was a great amount of cheese, but I couldn't taste very much of the buffalo seasoning. As for the philly cheese steak, it was absolutely delicious. The meat was cooked perfectly, we ended up adding the extra meat from the sandwich onto the fries, absolutely wonderful! As for my chicken cheese steak, it was good! The chicken was a bit dry and the entire sandwich tasted odd, probably because people don't normally order chicken, but I still ate the entire thing. It was really good, the chicken was a bit dry. So I returned with the kid army in tow. We descended on this place like the Mongol horde on Kaifeng with a similar result...looting, pillaging, and chicken molestation. Absolute best cheesesteak place in Albuquerque, and likely for about 600 square miles surrounding. I'm a big fan of classic Philly cheesesteaks, and this is THE place to go to get them unless you can afford a plane ticket for lunch. The first time I ate here, I came back again within 24 hours with my family. I personally love the traditional cheesesteak with cheese whiz and ketchup. I kept driving past this place and it seemed strange being right next to a FedEx print center but finally I decided to stop and it was well worth it. It's a little family run joint with a quaint little feel to it. You walk in and get old school diner vibes. you walk up to the counter to order, pretty simple menu of build your own cheesesteaks or there are some other sandwich or burger options. I built my own cheesesteak, pretty simple with just steak, onion, mushrooms, and pickles. Everything is made to order so when it came out it was super fresh. I did a half order with fries but when it came out it was definitely much larger portions than I expected, I honestly could have shared with someone. The taste was really great, everything was super flavorful, including the fried. I would most definitely eat here again for sure! The only critique I would have was it didn't feel like there was enough cheese on it, however I suspect that is my fault for ordering provolone cheese because it's not generally a super melty cheese, if anything I would totally pay for extra cheese. We got the cheesesteak with ALL the peppers and they had a lot to choose from. Also ordered a bucket of fried (yes that's a thing). So I was a bit apprehensive to try this place. During my time in the Marine Corps, I had a good friend from Philly and he took me there, to what most people refer to as the best cheese steak in Philly, Tony Luke's. I gotta say, this place compares on ALL levels to the great Philly Cheese steak joints I have eaten at. THE PROS: First off, don't get caught up in what is an "authentic" cheese steak. You like chicken, go for it, you like provolone, do your thing. This place has it all, chicken, steak, and all the toppings you would find at a cheese steak joint, and some you won't, like the classic NM favorite, Green Chile. I stuck with what I knew and loved, steak with cheese whiz, yes you heard me right, cheese whiz, sweet peppers and onions. After I unhinged my jaw and took a bite, I felt like I was NEXT to the Fresh Prince, chillin out, maxxin, and relaxin all cool. I mean, it was just that damn good. And the French fries were probably the best I have had in albuqerque. For those of you who do not possess the ability to eat ridiculous portion sizes like I do, bring a friend, a wife, a husband, someone else's wife or husband, or just a spare stomach to share this MASSIVE beastie smothered in gooey cheese, wonderful veggies, and greasy deliciousness. Don't think about it, just accept the calories as they attach to the inside of your arteries and smile as the cheesy satisfaction causes your brain to release endorphins and sends you in to cheesesteak bliss. Sadly they have gone downhill. This place used to be steller. Now portions are less, the meat quality seems to have gone down and service is lacking. More than one occasion now I have had issues with my cheese. Either it was left out completely or was given on the side. For the price you pay, having to warm your own cheeze wiz and pour on the sandwich and fries seems kinda backwards...... Sandwich was definitely not as good as before. Hopefully in a post Covid world they can rebound, but the quality has been going down now for about 11 months.
