Growing up in Toronto, I was spoiled with an abundance of delicious Afro-Caribbean cuisine, but found that there were slim pickings in Vancouver. A friend of mine who grew up in Jamaica recommended PGs and I haven't looked back since. PGs is located in Downtown White Rock. There is limited parking directly out front, however there is plenty of street parking close by. The interior is quite small, with only a few tables, but the decor is bright and tropical. It reminded me of one of those cute beach hut bars in the Caribbean. Their menu consists of authentic, home-cooked style Jamaican cuisine, with popular dishes like jerk chicken, Jamaican patties, marinated oxtail, and roti. I've personally tried their jerk chicken entree which came with coconut infused veggies and rice, as well as an assortment of their Jamaican patties. Their jerk chicken wings are also a great appetizer, jam packed with flavour. Everything I've tried from here has been amazing. The flavours, the spices, the quality... I have zero complaints. We came on a weekday evening and we were the only table at that time. Service was friendly though we were left alone the majority of the meal except when they server came by to take our order and get our bill. Other than that, no one really checked up on us though some people (owners? employees?) did walk by. Food was tasty though we both found the jerk chicken and shrimp salty (it was a bit spicy for me but that's just my tolerance). For around $25 for my dish after tax and tips, I can't say I left completely satisfied. I like supporting local businesses and would recommend trying though! read more

I really wanted to love this place more then I did. I originally just wanted a Coco bread and patty sandwich. However, it appeared you could not put the two together when ordering and the server (I think) was extremely nice but she had to go back and ask with every order. It was weird since it showed on the website you could get a beef patty and coco bread. In the end I ended up getting a patty in a coco bread but it was so complicated to order. My husband got the same thing and an order of Johnny cakes with the Mango butter. The best thing about the whole experience was the Johnny Cakes and the mango butter. It was truly the mango butter that had me bring a smile to my face. If I could, I would of slathered the whole butter in the Johnny cakes.When it comes to the beef patty, my husbands was warm yet mine was ice cold in the middle. Clearly microwaved I would assume. In the end it was just an okay experience if that. I would like to see more consistency with the menu and the knowledge of it and the promise of fresh made food being true. Ugh- I was so hyped to try this place after having this on my list for a good while! Unfortunately, I didn't have the same experience as others here and I wish I did. Service: there was 1 person overseeing the restaurant. There was only 1 customer when I had came in but everything took a long time (taking the order, or getting the attention of the server). She was very sweet and pleasant, but service was lackluster. Ambiance- loved the ambiance of the place! Made me feel like I was in a tropical place so I enjoyed it. The music was also great in the background. Even though there was music playing and more people in the resto, it was quite quiet lol. It was a little weird and my friend and I ended up whispering for some reason haha. Food- sigh. I don't want to say anything negative about the food, but it was a let down. The Jamaican patties (Beef and chicken) were tough and not warm when we got them. The beef did have good flavor though and a kick from all the yummy pepper. We also ordered a couple other items during their happy hour: mango guacamole and chips, Jonny cakes. Both dishes were also sadly not good. Tbe guacamole was not vibrant green, almost looked old and the chips were overcooked and greasy. The Jonny cakes, the dish that I was looking forward to the most... was so hard.. I've had Jonny cakes at other Jamaican restaurants and it was so different to what I had here. I liked the mango butter that it came with but even the butter looks like it had been over churned. The special that day was stewed brown chicken. The chicken dish was not bad, but the rice and beans were really bland and the veggies on the side were also bland. I expected them to have more flavor and spice so I was a bit confused when the dish didn't taste that way. I really tried my best to find reasoning for why the food was not as good, but I really don't know why it was. It also took a long time for our dishes to come out, but the food was room temperature so it was confusing. It's hard to make reviews like this because I want to give places the benefit of the doubt that they may have had an off day. And I really hope they did because this place was utterly disappointing. I was saddened by how disappointing the two chicken and two beef patties were. My husband and I wanted a quick lunch to go, and ended up with patties that were lukewarm at best. The only way to describe the dough was on the stale side, most likely due to having been in the "warming" zone for too long. We have purchased both frozen and ready-to-go patties for years from the Patty shop on MacDonald Street in Vancouver. Always fresh, always delicious. So we were excited to find a local shop in White Rock when we moved here two years ago, and where we have purchased frozen patties. This was the first time we bought ready-to-go, and well, never again. As for customer service, the young lady behind the counter could not have been more disinterested if she had tried. I have a feeling, which I am unable to confirm one way or another, that she may have said something to the worker in the kitchen. He popped his head around the corner to look at me, at which point I said "hello", and he quickly pulled back into the kitchen without acknowledging the greeting. Wow! How not to make customers feel welcome. Oh well, I guess I'll have to do regular runs to the Vancouver shop when I go into town. read more

The food was probably microwaved, with weak flavours. The goat and oxtail was on the cold side. They looked like they were sitting on the plate quite a while. It also took a long time for the food to come out. Portion size, for the price, absolutely far from being generous. I haven't felt so ripped of in a long time. There were zero customers there and zero other customers while we ate at the patio. Only tried this place because of all the five star reviews. Totally disappointed. Will not return. We come here for the patties! They serve them warm or frozen. We opted for the frozen this time and weren't disappointed. We ordered 6 beef and 6 chicken. The beef was a little under seasoned for me, however the flavors are spot on! The chicken is amazing. The curry has the right amount of spice and the filling is the perfect amount for the crust. I found this place on Yelp and have been dying to try Jamaican food. This place is a little hidden, it's tucked right in the corner. My best friend and I asked for recommendations and were told that the jerk chicken, oxtail stew, brown stew chicken/beef were customers' favourites. Ecstatic, I ordered the brown stew beef as the owner said it wasn't too spicy and my friend ordered the jerk chicken, the owner warned her in advance about the spice. We ordered for take out and made small talk with a very friendly regular. The aroma of the food was hitting us like a brick on the drive home. We couldn't wait to dig in. My brown stew beef wasn't spicy at all, more salty if anything. My friend's jerk chicken wasn't spicy at the least either. I felt the rice lacked flavour. I definitely wanna give this place another try because the owners seemed so genuine. I was initially going to order the oxtail stew, I'll give that a try next time! read more

Excellent food and very friendly service! Was looking to get something to eat after 8 pm on a Friday and found PG's was on my way, so I got there at about 8:30 (they were closing at 9) and found everything was still available (some places start to run out of some items a couple of hours before closing). I LOVE this place! Food: 10/10 Atmosphere: not the best but cozy Service: 7/10 (mainly since its not so busy resto) This is the only Jammy food in Whiterock, for what I know. The staff is extremely friendly and the food is DELICIOUS! Reminds me of all the good Caribbean food I used to eat back in Scarborough, ON. I had all their daily specials and I recommend all of them, but I like Sat the most (jerk chicken). Their Roti is really good too so def order it if you're new in the area. Would I come back? Today was my first time in. The restaurant is very quaint and unassuming ... I was not sure what to eat... after looking it all over I decided on a chicken roti with a homemade ginger-beer to drink. WOW! The curry was very flavorful and just spicy enough to encourage a little bit of sweat the form on my forehead... perfect! Best service, great food! A hidden gem in White Rock. We didn't check ahead, and came by around closing time by accident. They graciously invited us in and made us feel at home. The man serving us was quick to offer thoughts on his favourite dishes, and helped those in our party who were having difficulty deciding. He made it a fun and new experience, and most of us ordered something we've never had. The food tasted authentic, full of flavour with the right mix of side dishes. The choice of drinks was also exciting, with Jamaican favourites like Ting! We even ordered a couple more "to go" at the end of the night. We felt like they were genuinely happy to have us as customers, and wanted to make it fun and exciting. Would recommend to anyone! Make sure you're ready for a little spice. ;) read more

We have been going here for a couple of years. My favorite dish is the oxtail stew (comes with rice w/beans and grilled veggies and a fried dumpling); I get the large so I can save some for lunch the following day. We usually get a dozen Jamaican patties and keep them in the freezer for a quick snack. Everything is homemade and delicious! I love food that has unique taste that you know some heart and inspiration went into it. I found PG's food a cut above other take out restaurants. The restaurant is clean and theme decorated and the staff friendly and willing to listen to any concerns. They were helpful when I was selecting my order and their prices were reasonable. I enjoyed a great lunch, choosing to sit inside the restaurant as it was nice and cool. The wrap I had was filling with a good mix of ingredients and very tasty. The Ginger Beer was also good and comes recommended. I am glad I had the opportunity to relax and take in some Jamaican charm and will consider returning again with others so they can enjoy some amazing comfort food. read more

Don't read a book by it's cover is how I would describe PG's. I've lived close by for years and never noticed PG's tucked away in the corner of the complex. I was craving some Jerk Chicken real BAD one day and pow PG's came to mind so needed to give it a shot. Once inside; warm friendly relaxing atmosphere. After reading the reviews we were pretty excited to try out the vegetarian Roti and Pattie for take out. The Pattie was ok, but the roti tasted like it was taken out of the freezer and warmed up. It wasn't rolled well at all, fell apart and consisted of a few potatoes, onions and peppers. If your craving Jamaican I'd recommend skipping this joint. read more
