My dog, Michael Jackson, has an attitude that has always been reflected in his physical behavior. It's always been indicative of things he likes and dislikes. For example, he whines, yelps and tries to run away when the vet nurse has to use that rectal thermometer on him. After not seeing me for a while, when we do reunite, he will jump up and down and climb on me. His tail will wag nonstop for hours, despite his training.
He has a similar reaction when I get him into the car, ready to take a trip to the PetsHotel at PetSmart. As soon as Michael Jackson realizes where he is going, his joy cannot be contained. He will begin to wag his tail with such passion, the song "Whip My Hair" comes to mind. Upon arriving to the PetSmart, Mr. Jackson can hardly stay inside the car, leaping his small frame to the ground and heading for the entrance, with no concern for cars or bigger dogs. He will stretch every inch of his retractable lead just to make it through the automatic doors, and pant with such volume, one would assume he was choking. Knocking down displays of Martha Stewart products, brochure stands, the dog is in total disregard of the mess he makes, simply focused on getting to the hours of rough tumbling, butt sniffing and tail chasing that lie ahead of him.
Checking the eager dog in for the day is a breeze as the staff always remembers him (due to his name, no doubt), but because the staff also recognizes his eagerness and takes him off my hands, checking him in without asking to verify my paperwork. When the temporary collar is wrapped around my pooch's neck, he emits a sound of glee.
While I fill out forms, Michael Jackson is unleashed in the small dog room, a wide open space that has a floor covered in a special surface that mimicks outdoors. This is so MJ and his fellow day campers do not use the bathroom (either a #1 or #2) inside their homes. The room also has a multitude of large water bowls, and if one camper does use the bathroom, a staff member who stays in the room constantly is right on mopping up or sweeping up the remains. The staffer also monitors how the dogs interact with each other, and when MJ becomes too aggressive or is the target of aggression, the staffer steps in and manages to cool down the situation. For this, I am grateful...as is MJ because he keeps all his hair.
After the day is over (dogs can be dropped off as early as 7am and picked up as late as 9pm [Mon-Sat] and 7pm on Sunday) the dogs and my MJ are all tuckered out. Though he takes a long time expressing his joy to see me, he usually is so sleepy that I have to carry him out. When he is not, he promptly falls asleep in the car and upon arriving home, is asleep for hours, ensuring that my home is a place of serenity for the rest of the night. read more
