We dropped our dog, Cena, off for a weekend stay from Friday through Sunday, with day camp scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday. We arrived to pick Cena up just before 4:30PM on Sunday and noticed that she wasn't in camp, (camp is scheduled from 9AM - 5PM). My husband and I thought it was curious that she wasn't participating, so we asked the PetsHotel staff, and they simply said that they had already started removing the dogs for the day, (although over the next several minutes we didn't see any dogs taken out to be returned to their suites). Nevertheless, we were ready to check-out, so we paid and had Cena brought out to us. The PetsHotel staff offered no review of Cena's stay at check-out.
When Cena came out, my husband complained that she needed a bath, so I asked the staff if they were able to give her an exit bath while I did some shopping next door and told them I would return in around 30 minutes. They said this would be fine and took her for her bath.
Upon returning a few minutes later, the dog groomer said that she wasn't sure if the dog was dry yet because after she had bathed her, she had diarrhea in her suite, so she needed to rinse her again. I told her that is very unusual, as I've had Cena for over five years and she hasn't had an accident since she was a puppy. I thought maybe it was because she hadn't been brought out in a long time, so that was my next question--When was she last brought for a potty? The staff member replied that they are brought out during camp, sometime between 9AM and 5PM, but they don't document when they are taken out during camp. I found this appalling considering my dog may not have been able to relieve herself since the morning--No wonder she had an accident. That wasn't the case though.
The groomer went to the back to get Cena and several minutes went by. I knew something was wrong because so much time had passed, and then another staff member came out and said to the cashier that they needed help in the back. By the time they came out next, the groomer said Cena had another accident and that this time there was blood in her stool! By this time, I was very concerned about the health of my dog, so I quickly left with Cena so she could go outside to potty. That is when I noticed a stream of blood coming from her rectum, running down her hind legs. When she attempted to potty, it was pure blood. I've never seen anything like this happen to her, so I urgently drove her to our veterinarian which luckily is an after-hours hospital.
At the hospital, blood was dripping all over the lobby floor, so we were rushed back to a private room to be seen. Our dog's behavior was unrecognizable at this point--She spent the time waiting for the doctor pacing back and forth, shaking with anxiety, clearly in pain and crying.
We noticed Cena wasn't putting weight on her hind feet--that's when we saw her nails. Her back nails had been cut so short that the vet said she could see the veins, cartilage and dried blood. After the veterinarian conducted a rectal exam, she found that the cause of the blood from her rectum was likely caused from stress colitis. After, we brought Cena home, and our normally happy, social dog, coward in the corner.
We called to speak to PetsMart management Sunday night and were only able to reach the Assistant Manager at the time. We explained the entire situation, and asked if he could review video footage of the grooming session. He returned our call shortly after and said everyone at the PetsHotel denied trimming her nails. It isn't possible that no one trimmed her back paws. Her nails are barely visible now. She could walk, run and play comfortably when we dripped her off Friday, and now she barely puts weight on her hind feet. Even the vet noted that her back nails had been recently cut very short. It was obvious that whoever cut her nails at PetsMart had cut them so short that it undoubtedly caused her extreme pain and stress. I should mention that I had asked for an exit-bath, and if that includes a nail trim, that was never stated to me, as I only take the dog to have her nails trimmed at the vet. She had a bad experience before we adopted her with her nails being cut too short, and because of this, we always have professionals trim her nails so that situations like this don't happen. We are completely distressed that a company, and a boarder that we trust with our family member could have been so negligent. We adopted her from a shelter over five years ago, and since she's been the most lovable, energetic, sociable companion. Now, she's so traumatized that she's been sleeping alone, curled up in a ball the entire day. We couldn't take her for her morning walk or playtime because she seems to be in so much pain. read more
