Tips: - Secure a reservation if you're dropping by during a busy period or if your party is large. - This place has sparkling drinks that are excellent. Short version? Everything we consumed was delicious. Go! My normal version starts now. I hadn't seen a couple of dear friends for a while. We originally wanted to catch up on Boxing Day. I had made a reservation, but the greater Toronto area ended up with a snowstorm that day. We changed meeting up to New Year's Eve at noon instead. I made a reservation for three at this Petit Potato through Google reservations. Changing it was easy. A few hours before the actual reservation, I got a text message to confirm or cancel. Nice! Petit Potato is located in a busy plaza. It has a grocery store next door. Parking can be hectic. I managed to find a parking spot across from the eatery and backed into it. I walked in. I was immediately greeted by a nice man. I said that I had a reservation under my name. Without skipping a beat, he led me to the booth closest to the door. Nice! It wasn't cold sitting near the entrance. There was a heater on the floor. It was effective, as my friends and I were warm during our entire stay. They came in. We had the best three hours here catching up, and enjoying good eats and drinks. I scanned the QR code for our table that got me an online menu. You basically order online and the food magically appears. You ask for the bill when you're ready. We did three orders. Our first order was drinks: - Blackcurrant sparkling water - Kiwi lemon sparkling water - Strawberry lemon sparkling water I am a huge fan of sparkling drinks, as is one of my friends. These drinks were super fizzy and refreshing. It also came with real fruit. It did take some effort for me to fish out the kiwi because the ice cubes were in the way. The fruit was so juicy. I ordered the strawberry lemon sparkling water, which was equally as fabulous. Our second order comprised appetizers and mains: - Japanese deep-fried tofu with assorted mushrooms - Popcorn chicken with aioli - Chicken teppan fettuccine in a spicy black pepper sauce - Sizzling spicy chicken with basil, ginger, and onion, with rice on the side - Unagi omurice with teriyaki - mushrooms and butter in the rice The deep-fried tofu and mushrooms were amazing. If you love them in a light broth, you'll be as happy as I was. I had half this appetizer. The popcorn chicken with aioli was impressive. The chicken was white meat in strips. It didn't look like popcorn. My friends ate this appetizer up. I had a few strips that were crispy and tender. The aioli was perfect. One of my friends ordered the sizzling chicken teppan fettuccine. I got to enjoy a bit of the fettuccine in a yummy, spicy black pepper sauce. The pasta was al dente and tasted homemade. The sauce was superb with bits of mushrooms in it. It wasn't too spicy, but the black pepper sauce had a lot of flavour. My other friend had the sizzling spicy chicken with basil, ginger, and onion. He loved it. It came with steamed rice on the size. It was steamy that you could easily get a facial if you put your face above this dish! I got the unagi (eel) omurice with teriyaki. It was excellent. The rice inside the omelette had butter and mushrooms. Highly enjoyable! It was nice having a solid piece of eel that was nicely grilled and tender. The omelette was perfect as a wrapper around the rice. It's how omurice should be made. This place nailed it! Our third and final order was dessert: - Creme caramel - Brown sugar crema souffle pancakes with boba and vanilla ice cream The creme caramel was so smooth. I'm talking silky smooth. You don't need to chew. It just glides down from your mouth into your stomach. The caramel had so much body with a slightly bitter finish to it. So good! My other friend went to town having the brown sugar crema souffle pancakes. We all thought that the boba were blueberries. Nope! I had some. The different textures of the boba with the jiggly pancakes, strawberry slices, and the best french vanilla ice cream was pure perfection. Brown sugar goes so well with boba. It was a fabulous end to our fine meal. We all used the washroom at different points. I used it before we left. It was clean. It was a single stall. No complaints. For me, this place is the perfect spot for catching up with friends and family whenever I'm back in Toronto. Since this resto is located in a plaza with neighboring restaurants, you shouldn't have any problem with parking. Bonus points for being open late. My cousin and I arrived around 9pm (still crowded), but we were greeted and seated right away. We enjoyed and shared a few of our faves such as, Popcorn Chicken, Takoyaki (must try!), Kalbi, and Omurice w/ Pork Cutlet, which we enjoyed wholeheartedly. We were going to have lunch in a nearby restaurant but the line was too long so we came over here. It was a nice surprise with lots of interesting choices. Some of the family had ramen. There are only three single washrooms at the back, one for women, one for men & one handicap washroom. I had to wait to use the ladies washroom & the person before me made it really stinky. I wasn't too happy about that. I prefer the Yonge street location where there is more than one ladies washroom. Conclusion Even though the menu is the same I prefer the Yonge street location. Great food; was a little weird that you had to start ordering by QR code instead of actually ordering with real people who have to come by anyway when things don't work, like items not appearing for online order when it's sold out (e.g. mango bingsu). We got the booth near the bathroom which wasn't bad since you couldn't hear anything, just that people are constantly walking by your table. The place seems a little loud, but they close at midnight (at least on a Sunday) and we had a good time. 10% cash discount. Little weird also that we couldn't close out one tab and start another since I wanted to pay for dessert with my friend. I love fried chicken, but this was really well flavoured, the chin tasted like it was well marinated before coating it with the spiced flour that it was also seasoned. This restaurant has also stepped up their game! The service is great, there's one particular guy who is really pleasant (I didn't get his name though) and helpful! There wasn't anyone else waiting, but the employee we spoke to said there would be a small wait and told me to enter my information in the system to join the waitlist. We were seated a minute after. I'm not sure how long this special has been around, but they have a Business Lunch Special for $16.49. It includes a main dish, salad, edamame, drink, and dessert. It's available Monday to Friday from 11:30 a.m. (when they open) until 3 p.m. for dine-in. We ordered L202 - Chicken Cutlet Omurice with Curry Sauce, and L203 - Sliced Beef Teppan Pepper Rice, via a QR code that the server gave us along with the menus. Almost immediately, we were brought our drinks, salad, and edamame. As we were eating the salad, the dessert was given to us as well. It seemed a bit early, seeing as how we hadn't even gotten our entrees yet. The dishes are a very reasonable size. I couldn't even finish half of the omurice. The chicken cutlet was a bit dark, but not dry. The beef with the teppan pepper rice was dry; it could be that the beef was too lean and didn't have enough fat. There wasn't any flavour to the beef, so the sauce they provide with the meal is necessary. There's also a Japanese Hotdog menu. There are five different versions to choose from (yakiniku hotdog, Japanese very spicy dog, ramen hotdog, tempura hotdog, and meat lover). They cost either $9.49 or $10.99. You scan a QR code and order from your phone. I will say that the scoop of ice cream being $4 was a bit much for what I'd say was average ice cream, and a single scoop too. The soufflé pancakes were good, reaaally soft though. The creme brûlée was fine too, it's very custard-like and as someone who has only had creme brûlée from AYCE's recently, I can't say it was my favourite. The sugar layer was pretty thick too. Visited this location on a late Saturday evening and stayed until closing, we weee the last table to exit the premises. Service was very positive and the ordering process was thru a QR code that the waiter prints out from their computer. From there we were able to order all the items we wanted. On the table we're menus with photos, of course for reference only but we found most of the photos of the food items to be accurate. Prior to getting into the restaurant they have a queue system that you can check in at via their iPad. Provide your phone number and they will call/text you when your table is ready. After a short wait outside we get the automated text and phone call and we proceeded to our table. We ordered a number of items as seen in the photos attached to my review. Petit Potato in summary: efficient ordering system, quick service, and great food (Taiwanese fusion). We were table to get a table in the late afternoon hour on a weekend without any reservation, although they do get quite busy during peak dining hours (lunch and dinner). You order on your mobile phone by scanning the QR code they give you on a piece of paper. The user interface of the online ordering system is easy to use and navigate. Food comes piping hot within ~5 minutes - pretty fast for made-to-order dining service! We tried 3 main dishes and a salad appetizer, and they were all excellent. I liked how the sauce / dressing came served on the side for almost every dish, without being asked to do so. I usually like my food to be less saucy, so it was perfect. Another thing I liked about all of the menu items was that everything was customizable - you can take out or add extra of certain ingredients (especially the bibimbap, pastas, and teppan rice). Dishes that we tried: 1) Shrimps and Crab Meat Salad - Fresh mixed greens salad with sliced cherry tomatoes, cold halved shrimps, and imitation crab. Portion size was pretty good for an appetizer / side dish to share. 2) Uni Spaghetti with Scallops - Big portion for spaghetti. It was very saucy and we couldn't taste the uni at all. It tasted more like mac 'n cheese sauce. Very creamy with a couple of pieces of scallops. 3) Seafood Bibimbap - You can opt to take out or add any ingredients you wish, so we chose to take out the kimchi to make it non-spicy. It came in a stone pot bowl so it stayed warm for a long time, and we could scrape the sides and bottom of the pot to get the crispy rice. It was fusion bibimbap because it came with a brown sauce (that tasted a bit like the Japanese salad dressing / seasoning, which I liked) instead of the red and spicy gochujang sauce. I preferred this brown sauce more than the traditional bibimbap sauce. It had a good amount of vegetables in it (broccoli, bean sprouts, and pickled radish & carrots). 4) Vegetables Teppan Pepper Rice - This was my favourite item on the menu that we tried. I loved how it contained a wide variety of vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, red bell pepper, mushrooms, corn, etc.). The protein included was crispy tofu. We chose to add extra ingredients: shrimps, broccoli, cabbage, and garlic. The garlic was added as minced garlic on top of the rice - wish they included more of it though. Sauce was also served on the side, so you can mix and pour as much or as little sauce as you'd like. This was the same brown sauce that came with the bibimbap, which tasted umami without being overly salty or sweet. We didn't try any of the desserts, but this place is especially popular for their desserts - especially the big giant toast "towers" with various toppings, which would be perfect for sharing with a group. Other dessert options include various fresh fruits and sago mixes, grass jellies, Japanese crepes, durian pizza, mille crepe cakes, etc. They have an extensive drinks menu as well (a whole menu booklet just for drinks), including bubble tea, juices, and traditional tea. read more

Now, we have tried all of their toast tower flavours and can confidentially say that each and every one of them is a work of art. We ordered: (A) Uni Spaghetti w/ Scallop It was buttery and full of umami flavour. It was unique and definitely a must try. I wish there was more scallops in the dish. I only had 3 scallops in mine. (B) Beef Striploin Steak Omurice This dish is made with scrambled eggs and rice topped with striploin steak made medium rare with peppercorn sauce. (C) Sliced Beef Teppan Pepper Rice The beef short ribs was tender and juicy and was paired with a mildly sweet and spicy sauce. I wish there was more meat to this dish as most of them consisted of bones with barely any meat on them. (D) Purple Yam Mille Crepe w/ Vanilla Ice Cream The purple yam has a balanced sweetness within the layers of mille crepe and velvety cream. Pairing this with vanilla ice cream ties in the flavour altogether. (E) Matcha Souffle Pancake w/ Vanilla Ice Cream The souffle pancake itself was very rich and creamy topped with matcha powder. It was complimented with a sweet matcha cream sauce that had a hint of bitterness. I wish they incorporated the matcha into the souffle. Food is pretty average so don't expect much, but it's a good place if you're having late night cravings since they're open quite late. They're known for their toast tower which is quite good and the portion is huge. I find that the items are hit or miss on different days. Today we tried their mentaiko udon with scallop and the condensed milk toast. The udon was better than I expected but very salty and tastes more like kimchi than mentaiko (I think the dish had some white (baek) kimchi in it). I have known about this place for awhile. I usually visit this plaza to go to Congee Wong or Sushi legend. I was never much of a dessert person so I did not find myself there. My friend suggested coming here so that's what we did and to my surprise they have extended their menu just beyond dessert. They have all these really cool things such as spaghetti fusions, Japanese hot dogs, sizzling plates, omurice and bimbimbap. When we arrived we noticed one of the menus was a little sticky. It is a dessert place after all but I wish the staff would clean the menu. We decided to try uni spaghetti. That was all right. I was shocked that it was okay. I expected it to be much worse. The sauce is a bit watery than what I'm used to and the sauce does have a like a fishy component to it(when I eat it in Vancouver I would never have this note)My friends were impressed. I can't argue with that. Next up was the popcorn chicken pizza, to my fellow yelpers do not order this dish !!! It has way too much mayo and whatever other sauce that they use. The five spice of the popcorn chicken does not match and the worst part of all is the dough. The dough was very flat. It felt like it did not proof enough. It was an absolutely a miss. Okay, next up is the golden toast. The dessert that petite potato is famously for this mountain high stacked thick toes concoction combine with a peek of ice cream. I do not know why we ordered it since it's only the three of us but for the value it's pretty decent since it feeds like four people. We ordered the mango one and you know as a foodie if the mango is not in season might be a little bit sour and that was the only risk. Unfortunately for us it was a bit sour. Would have been perfect if it was ripened properly. It wasn't seasoned but that's the choice I made. The toast was still crunchy which was a plus. You can really taste the butte r and it was a very good absorbing material for the mango sauce and the melting vanilla ice cream. I'm prefacing this review by stating that I've been to the new Empress location and had a higher than expected experience there. This location in comparison is left in the cold dark dampness of the shadow of the Empress location. FOOD: The 3 dishes we order that were the same dishes I tried at the Empress location were the Uni pasta, omurice, and the Japanese pancakes. All were very lackluster. Both Uni and omurice lacked flavor and depth, like they never even tried the dishes before. The pasta wasn't salted, the rice and steak were both bland. The Japanese pancakes looked great but the consistency was almost watery on the inside. Underdone. What was decent at this location was the popcorn chicken, the Japanese deep fried tofu, and the mango pancake(crepe). The popcorn chicken was nicely battered, crispy and salty. The deep fried tofu with mushrooms had good texture and firmness. The pancake was a nice thin skin of crepe engulfing whipped cream and a slice of mango. The mango wasn't ripe enough and was sour but the rest was okay. SERVICE: This place felt like a soft opening. Slightly unorganized, and inexperienced staff. First off, you order by writing the food codes onto a little paper and give to a server, easy. So we wrote both our meal and dessert on the same sheet and handed that in. I knew from the other location that the Japanese fluffy pancake would take 20mins at least, and the server reminded us of that. She actually said 30mins. So 5 mins after putting the order in the first dish comes out - the mango pancake. Why the hell would you serve the dessert first? Traditionally, in EVERY culture dessert is served after the main course unless you specifically ask for it first. Anyway, we just ate it. Then half of our main courses come out which is great but then the Japanese pancakes come out. This is 15mins into our meal which started off with dessert. So now the ice cream is melting while we're basically just started the main courses. So now we're eating dessert while eating our main courses so the ice cream doesn't completely melt. The service from the Empress location (and every other restaurant in the world) is logical. You order mains and dessert and they understand you want the desserts AFTER your mains. CLEANLINESS: This is the first time I added this section to a review but they make a gas station Tim Horton's look like the Royal York. You can tell they don't clean often. The bathrooms are run down and unmaintained. The wall sconces are covered in spiderwebs and dust and the floor was slippery.. AND sticky? I don't mean to bash this place so hard but I tell it like it is. read more

I really like this place because almost all of the options on the menu sound/look really good. We were quite satisfied with what we ordered. Our favorite was the pasta dish - very well seasoned, wish they give a little more scallops. The tofu appetizer was good, too. The ox tongue stew was normal.
