I think 3.5 stars is a fair rating for this place. Our service was decent (not perfect) and the drinks were yummy although overpriced, but the food was a hit and miss. First off, the positive. The clams and the duck rice were a hit. The clams were nice and plump, tasted very fresh and absorbed the delicious sauce it in came in very well. The duck rice had different pieces of duck meat in it, was very flavorful, and the tiny socarrat pieces were a bonus. The olive-perfect ached octopus was also a lovely treat. Perfectly cooked, it was actually quite the generous portion, so get this if you haven't been influenced by my octopus teacher. Unfortunately, we also got two signature dishes that had to be sent back. The bread was completely undercooked on the inside. My guess is the ingredient ratio was off. The owner apologized and tried to explain that the bread is supposed to be dense, but but I had cheese bread many times and these babies were raw. The garlic shrimp was another dish we had to send back. The shrimp texture was mushy and had an off flavor, so we weren't going to risk that. Lastly, they were out of pastel de nata. How are you of out of your signature dessert on a Friday night?! We might stop by for a drink if we're in the area, but sadly, this won't be making our "regular spots" list. read more

It's about three weeks ago my whole family went to this restaurant; the experience was not good at all. Until now I still feel bad about it and decide to write some comment and hope the comment can be seen by other customers; and hope the restaurant can improve in the future. Right after being seated, the waiter brought us ice water. My wife requested to change it to warm water. However, after many times of queries to a few different waiters/waitresses when the meal is almost finished, finally 'hot' water arrived. At the end, the restaurant charged 4 US dollars for the cup of hot water. They even did not mention hot water is so costly either on menu or by service people. Is it reasonable to charge 4 dollars on a cup of warm water? And why it took so long to get the water? This is the first time I encountered such situation. Just a few days ago my wife and I went to another restaurant; when we requested to have warm water, the waitress brought it in a minute and it's free of charge. In the past few years, no matter what kind of restaurants we went, I never seen any restaurant charge on warm water. In general the food was OK, services other than warm water were OK. But I don't understand why it's so costly and take forever to get a cup of water. I will never come to this resturant again. read more

What we got: cheese bread (4/5) -- addictive texture from both cheese and bread..just beware that if you don't eat it asap then the texture is compromised steak sandwich (2/5) -- pretty difficult to split and eat between more than 2 people because the saucy steak is so slippery that the fillings end up falling out of the bread when you try to cut and bite it...flavorwise the steak and bread were just okay, the french fries were standard and needed a dip or they got too salty and dry mussels (4/5) -- well cooked mussels, good broth..but really needs a side of bread to go with to soak up the broth duck rice (3/5) -- good rich, savory flavor but definitely a portion for one person...they only put a small sliver of each meat so if we wanted to share equally, we had to cut up the meat filet mignon (3/5) -- heavy on the wine and both the sauce and beef needed seasoning, also needed a side of bread or even some potato chunks While some of the food was delicious, it was not designed to be split up very efficiently so many people in a group can easily try it. Came here for lunch on a Friday and it wasn't packed, so it didn't matter if we had made rezzies or not. Location is in downtown San Jose and there is metered street parking. Building is beautiful! Decor and ambiance is spot on, with brick exposed interior, and white and cirulean blue colors everywhere. People mentioned slow service, but we didn't experience that. Food was fantastic! Think tapas but Portuguese. Got the sautéed veggies which had a balsamic glaze of sorts and was delicious. The waiter recommended the tempura green beans, which were pretty good but not outstanding. The octopus was awesome, but potatoes could have used a sauce. Steak sandwich was great - excellent flavor overall and came with fries. Also got the white sangria which was refreshing! 15 seemed steep for a glass of sangria, but they give you a very full glass and presentation makes it worthwhile. You have the option of pre-ordering egg tarts, which I loved! You can take them to go or eat them at the restaurant. Definitely will be back! read more

The sister restaurant to Michelin Starred Adega, this Portuguese gem in San Jose is a must go if you're in the area. We stopped by for some cocktails and quick bites after a pretty heavy ramen lunch and that was definitely the smart move. Parking wasn't difficult for us at 1PM on a Saturday, but depending on time of day or if there is an event going on nearby, I could definitely see it being an issue. We ordered the clams and the octopus as light bites to go with our cocktails! The portions were small but still enough to share. Definitely a bit pricey here so good thing we filled up separately! Everything was cooked PERFECTLY. We finished things quickly but HAD to make room for their pastel de nata. 100 Percent recommend getting those if you are just looking for sweet treat. The dining area was spacious with high ceilings and a very urban feel. It was a clean aesthetic that was comfortable and modern! Only major gripe we'd have was service. For being EMPTY at this time, we rarely got checked on: water was empty on numerous occasions and wait staff were just talking and joking by the bar. This place has been on the Michelin Bib Gourmand list, so I wanted to try it out! I've been to Portugal before, so when looking at the menu items, they did seem to have a lot of Portuguese items. My partner and I made a reservation ahead of time, but when we came at 7:45 pm on a Friday evening, there were plenty of empty tables, so walk-ins should be fine as well. It is located in Downtown SJ, so factor in some time to find parking. This place is like tapas style, so expect the dishes to be small. We ordered the following: - Acoriana (4/5): This was a passion fruit, coconut cocktail with a rum base. The foam from coconut was delicious! One con was that the passion fruit purée was all concentrated at the bottom. Bit steep for a cocktail in price ($19). - Cheese Bread (4/5): For $9, you get 3 pieces. However, cheese bread is quite dense and unexpectedly filling. The inside was so soft and you could see the cheese inside. - Meat Croquettes (3.5/5): By itself, the croquette is a bit salty and not very memorable in flavor. But with the sauce, it is good and brings the flavor to the dish. This was $9. - Duck Rice (4/5): This was recommended by our server as a favorite. For $19, it is quite small in portion size. However, it reminds me of a mini paella because the edges of the rice were crispy and it comes in a cast iron skillet. This was delicious, with additional meat chunks on top. Would recommend ordering this. - Pata Negra Fries (4/5): We originally were going to order just the pata negra, but upon asking the server about what the fries version entailed, we decided to go with that, which was $34. It did not disappoint. The fries are laid on top with the meat and drizzled with this chipotle sauce. If you've ever had patatas bravas sauce, this is what that sauce reminded me of. The sauce was really the star of the show. I do wish that they had drizzled it more throughout the fries rather than just on top, since the fries at the bottom ended up being quite plain. - Pastel de Nata (2/5): I was really excited for this because I loved these in Portugal, but this one did not hit the mark. For $5 a piece, it is quite steep in price. The crust was flakey but also dry and sort of tasted... stale? The custard was a tad bit sweet and even the cinnamon could not balance it out. Service was decent - our server was nice and helpful with the ordering process, but nothing outstanding. Overall, I think the food here is decent. Price-wise, it is a bit steep since each dish is expensive but small in portion. They also charge a 5% living wage surcharge on top of your bill. The first two visits were fantastic--the food was truly excellent. Unfortunately, my most recent experience was disappointing enough that we decided to leave after just two dishes. We came in expecting to enjoy a leisurely, European-style lunch and were ready to order a variety of plates. However, after our first two dishes arrived, we decided not to continue. First, we ordered the blood sausage. It arrived lukewarm on a cast iron skillet that wasn't even warm to the touch, suggesting it had been sitting for a while. The sausage was rubbery and tough--I couldn't even cut through the casing with my knife. While the flavor was decent, it desperately needed a good char. Overall, I'd rate it 2 out of 5. Next, we had the sardines. These also came out at room temperature and tasted like they had been sitting for too long. The vegetables on the side were the best part. Unfortunately, the fish itself was overly salty and slightly cold--just not enjoyable. Aside from the food, the atmosphere wasn't great. When we walked in, there was a strong fishy odor--which is understandable in a seafood-focused restaurant, but it was overpowering and took some time to get used to. There were also quite a few flies in the dining area, which didn't help the overall impression. We were seated at a table that had a large crack in it. Not a major issue, but the uneven surface made it tricky to find a stable spot for my wine glass. Sitting on a corner near the San Jose Convention Center, Petiscos slowly opens up to a quiet evening. For a nice place to eat dinner, it is fairly empty in the afternoon. There is street parking around. The cheapest parking would be South Hall at $7 for the whole day. I would recommend going there so it is not too pricey. They have elegant tile walls and their thematic display is in blue, white, and black. It is an elegant touch with Portuguese art. The glass windows gives a spectacular view of people walking by. This is a good place for drinks with friends or a date. My server Christian (sorry if I spelled his name wrong) was so engaging and kind. He always checked in to make sure everything is good to go. Flames Chourico (3/5): This is probably one of their most ordered dish as this sausage is served literally in flames. As the flames die down, you can finally eat it. Nothing very special about this dish, but it was nicely presented. It was a bit spicy and had a great mix of spices. We went here for a late afternoon lunch on a Saturday. It was quite empty, with just two other tables occupied. The place had decent decor. There is a lot of good stuff on their menu, which I would have loved to come back and try if not for their service. More on that later. We ordered cod cake, shrimp fritters, flaming chorizo, and octopus infused in olive oil. The food was pretty good. We enjoyed every item. The service, on the other hand, was terrible. After we were seated, the waiter came to give us the menu, and 5 minutes later he came to get the order. That was the last time we saw him. A few minutes later, our food arrived in batches, served by a different person. Once all the food was on the table, the waiter or server never stopped by the table. We kept waiting, hoping someone would come to ask for dessert or refill our water, but we just kept waiting for close to 45 minutes with no attention. We even tried to make eye contact and wave, but no luck. Finally, we got fed up and walked up to the bar area, asked for the check, paid it, and walked off. We enjoyed a pre-show meal here a few days ago. Only a few doors down from the California Theater where we saw Phil Rosenthal, so location was perfect. Thank goodness we had a reservation since I think half the theater patrons were there too. We have been to their award winning Adega Restaurant before it closed so we were excited to try the petiscos/tapas here. Food was good! Husband liked the octopus, I liked the mushroom rice and curried scallops. Meat croquettes were meh. Sangria was good but somehow the order got missed so when it finally came I had to basically down it at the end. Because of this, our waiter was so kind and gave us a complimentary dessert. The kale soup (caldo verde) was my least favorite as it had no taste and had a gel-like texture. I did like the corn soup (a little sweet with popcorn on top), grilled sardine, and asparagus rice (like risotto). Food: Petiscos has a tapas style menu where you order a number of different dishes to share among your friends. My friends and I ordered the following: Bread Charcuterie Cheese Plate Cheese Bread Garlic Filet Mignon Ribeye Fried Green Beans House Salad Duck Rice All of the items were good. However, I would not recommend the corn bread. Note that the charcuterie plate is only smoked meats. The cheese portion you have to order as the cheese plate. The fried green beans were my favorite item. Service: The biggest issue I had was the service of the restaurant. After we were seated, there was a long wait before we were greeted. We placed a few items to begin with when we ordered our drinks. When we wanted to order the larger items, we had to flag down someone to come take our order. The servers were constantly bringing items that we had not ordered. We had ordered the charcuterie plate first and when it came out, we ordered the cheese plate when we realized it was only meat. However, they brought us another charcuterie plate instead. We let them know of the error and we got our cheese plate, but it came really late into the meal. When we received our check, they had charged us twice for the charcuterie plate and also the cheese plate. Ultimately, the service was slow and the food was coming out of the kitchen very slowly. We ordered some of the more popular dishes which included the smoked chourico, duck rice, and oven roasted octopus in olive oil. Dishes were quite small since they are meant to be tapas/shared dishes. Food and services was great, however the price was more on the pricey end. Flamed Chourico: 3/5 ($15) It came with lit with a flame from the alcohol at the bottom of the dish. Pretty cool. Tasted just okay to me, felt like I could of gotten this anywhere else or at a grocery store. Didn't think this dish was worth it considering it was $15. Duck rice: 5/5 ($19) My second favorite dish. This was super small, around the length of my hand for the stone plate. Despite the small size, this rice was packed with flavor! Very tasty! Octopus, Oven Roasted in Olive Oil: 5/5 ($19) This was my favorite dish. I was very surprised with the texture of this one. The octopus was cooked perfectly where it sort of melted in my mouth. We came for an early birthday celebration. I celebrated a birthday several years ago at their sister restaurant, Adega, which is unfortunately no longer, but had a wonderful experience there. So I had a bit of high expectations of this place. I made a reservation online a couple weeks ahead of time but seemed like they still had availability the day before, when I had to push our time. It also happened to be Portugal Restaurant Week, so they were offering a prixe fix deal. We were seated promptly. We weren't given the prixe fix menu at first so I had to ask for it. Our hostess filled our water. Then our waiter came by to take our drink order. I got the Sumol, which is a Portuguese sparkling beverage. It wasn't super clear on the menu but I thought it was passion fruit, orange, guava (POG) flavor, but really you just pick one of those. I was sad but still got passion fruit, which is my fav fruit flavor. My SO got the Alentejana cocktail and it came with a piece of iberico ham. Very cool. We had to wait a while for the waiter to come back to take our order. This was the first of many waits. It was pretty busy inside but still I didn't see our waiter very much at all. Like I would expect them to be walking around, taking care of other tables, at least, if it was busy. The wait staff who brought out the drinks and food, were different than the main waiter. So we did get our drinks in an ok amount of time. Service overall was not great. Long wait times between each meal. At the beginning, I saw different waiters walking around refilling water glasses. Towards the end of the meal, when we were eating and actually drank some water and needed refills, no one was walking around. We had to flag someone down to get more water. When they brought our entrée, they offered two sauces. We said yes, we'd like to try them -but the sauces were never brought. Luckily we didn't have our heart set on them but still, to forget... Also I don't think they're used to people taking food home. Especially since the portions are not huge. I guess I just wasn't super hungry. They seemed surprised that I wanted take-out containers. It was a super slow meal - 2 hours long. I get that some people don't mind lounging and enjoying their meal. But if people are just sitting around, waiting, and looking annoyed/bored - please read the room and check in on them more frequently. For my prixe fix meal, I ended up with the beef tongue, duck rice, and the orange tort. My SO got the flaming chorizo, steak sandwich, and the cream tart. I like offals so the beef tongue was delicious. It was cooked in a simple tomato sauce. The flaming chorizo is gimmicky but the hubby liked it. It's served on a ceramic platter on a grill like plate so the flames could cook the chorizo sausage. The flames lasted about 5 minutes, which is good bang for your buck but not great if you want to enjoy it right away. Or you have to be careful when cutting. Also you want to try to make sure it doesn't drop below the "grill-like parts" because it will taste like oil or the flammable source. The steak sandwich was huge. It was one pieces between two slices of soft bread. The steak seemed like it was doused in a sauce. We asked for it medium rare. I would say it was more of a medium well, with the slightest pink just a small spot in the middle. Also they did offer up ketchup and a dill aioli sauce. My duck rice was served on a small sizzling plate. There was a slice of chorizo and pork belly on the top. The duck seemed like it was shredded and mixed in with the rice. It was flavorful. I wish the sizzling plate made the rice a bit crunchy at the bottom. But it wasn't. And for dessert, I already talked about the cream tart above. My orange tort is like dense rolled cake. It did have a strong orange flavor but was not too sweet. The cake was also very dense and served semi cold. It was very filling. The sweetness came from the two small slices of oranges topping it. I think maybe a little bit of cream in between the roll or topping it, would give it a different texture. The food was overall decent but nothing stood out so much that I'm dying to come back. The regular menu, in addition to the prixe fix menu is pretty simple - meaning no descriptions. Luckily I was able to look at photos and kinda get a feel for it. Like we didn't know the steak sandwich came with fries. It did hurt us a bit, when the cream tart came with some blueberry filling. My hubby is not a huge fan of blueberry and it was sandwiched between the cream and the graham cracker crust so not easily removed. The blueberry flavor was not too strong so he did try his best to enjoy it but I could tell he was a bit disappointed. I would say this menu sucks for people that are picky eaters or have allergies. Also I would say the prixe fix menu was not a "deal" at all. It was the same cost as ordering each dish separately. We came here around 1pm on Saturday. Tried to open the door and it was locked. Staff didn't come to open the door for a good 5 minutes while other diners looked at us. It was NOT busy because half of the restaurant was empty. I didn't have a good impression already. Because they went to open doors for every single person who tried to come in after us right away. Seated for a while then finally somebody came take our orders. It was San Jose downtown restaurant week and it offered $45 three course meals but we decided to order off the menu to try different things. We ordered cheese bread, meat croquette, kale soup, steak sandwich, duck rice, and octopus in olive oil. To be very honest, I just don't understand where did the 5 stars or 4 stars review coming from?! None of the dishes impressed me except octopus was done right. Octopus alone was 4 stars. Other ones really lacked flavors or too salty or not enough salt. It came down to $98 for all of them for lunch, not worth it. Ambiance is fine. I had this place bookmarked on my restaurants to eat for a long time and this weekend, my husband and I finally made the trek out to the South Bay to have lunch here. I made reservations in advance so we were quickly seated after we checked in. The restaurant was probably 20% full at around 12:20 pm but customers quickly piled in and by 1 pm, it was a full house. I can't tell if everyone made reservations but I would advise for those who are interested in eating here to do so in case there are no tables left. The interior of the restaurant is open, bright and modern. Wall art gives a Portuguese feel. This would make a great place for a first date, for a birthday meal, a family gathering or even celebrating an anniversary. Service was above average. Food arrived shortly after we placed the order. Plates were removed after we finish each dish. We did have to flag down the wait staff to get the check but the check out process was quick once we got ahold of someone. Food was delicious for the most part. We ordered 4 dishes to be shared among the 2 of us. Kale soup (5/5): perfect blend of kale, potatoes, olive oil and salt. Good portion, soup was hot when served and the taste is very similar to the one we had in Sintra. This is a must order if you are eating at the restaurant. Shrimp in garlic sauce (3/5): the garlic sauce was a bit too lemony and the shrimp size was a bit small. We had a similar dish at Romero in Lisbon and the execution of this dish was so much better there. Portion size was a bit on the smaller size. Roasted octopus in olive oil (3/5): I was a bit disappointed with this dish, portion size a bit small and the octopus was too mushy/soggy. Taste was ok. Duck rice (5/5): one of the highlights of our meal. This dish exceed our expectations. Size looks small but the rice was packed with a lot of shredded duck. It wasn't oily at all and the aroma of the duck coated each piece of rice. A must order. We had to save our stomach for dessert at another place but otherwise, we would try their desserts too as the server did mention that their bread pudding is amazing. Delicious food, clean & cozy ambiance, not expensive but the downside is the portions are too small. I didn't love my service , we waited long periods of time to find and call over our waiter a couple times. Regardless, the food was REALLY great and a very diverse menu. Was looking for a Portuguese restaurant after visiting the very beautiful Portuguese church and this came highly recommended by Fr. Silveira. Just a few minutes away from the Five Wounds Portuguese church, located in the SJ area they call Little Portuguese. Petiscos by Adega is casual dining and is a Michelin guide restaurant. They have parking available at the back. The entrance to the parking space is a small alley that's so easy to miss so you really need to pay attention when to make a turn. Came with a bunch of girlfriends on a Sunday for lunch without a reservation but we got seated right away. I love Portuguese cuisine since it's a little bit similar to Filipino cuisine. We love how they also allowed separate checks for all of us. Cumulatively, our orders were as follows: A pitcher of Sangria which was really good Duck Rice Steak sandwich - my friend really loved it Octopus oven roasted in olive oil Beef tongue in tomato sauce Sauteed veggies I got the Chicken gizzards and a side of bread and ordered the Pastei de nata for dessert This place is a bit pricey. I'm at the San Jose Civic frequently for dance competitions and now I have a go to restaurant to eat near there ! We went before a show right before Christmas and the dining room was warm, inviting and festive. The food was great! The duck rice and pig ear salad were highlights and of course the cheese bread !! My aperol spritz was a very generous pour. I'd say the service started great - very friendly and welcoming but after the food came out it was hard to flag down our server. I wanted to love this place but unfortunately I don't. The place is super pricey for the amount of food. I get tapas style, but I've never paid for sliced bread at a wannabe upscaled restaurant. They were out of cheese bread as well as the Portugese tarts which was a letdown since we really wanted to try these. We got the blood sausage, beef tongue, shrimp in garlic sauce, mushroom rice, the meat croquettes and obviously sliced bread for sauce dipping. The croquettes were the most underwhelming dish, the rest were ok. The service is pretty slow and the attention to details is non existent. I was expecting a spin for each dish but we got none, I don't particularly like cross contaminating my sauces. Anyways, just ok, not worth the price tag tho. read more

Took me back to my childhood. I should add the staff was exceptionally customer friendly. It was not packed but there were other people at other tables. Very welcoming.
