Coming from Los Angeles CA, I don't know too much about southern food, but I gotta say that Pete's Grill as good as what other people say. The food is cheap, affordable, and real homey. The food is ready to go and all you have to do is pick out what you want and go. Super convenient if you're in a hurry. I had the Monday special which was the bbq chicken with side of cabbage and mac and cheese for a flat price of $7 including cornbread and drink. Chicken was fall of the bone tender and the bbq sauce had the right amount of sweetness, savory and tang. The mac and cheese was creamy and cheesy and not dry like some of the mac and cheeses I've previously had. Overall, I think this place is awesome considering its price, great quality of food, and convenience. The only downside is that it only opens until 2pm. Wish it was open longer so I can eat it for dinner too. read more

I love a small town diner and they are getting scarce unless you are on in a small town. I happened to be in Gibsonville on business and of course the locals will tell you where to get a good square meal with a great price point. When I saw the sign I felt at home and looking forward to the meat and two experience. I wasn't disappointed and the cafeteria style atmosphere was pleasing to me. We had fried chicken, cabbage and rice & gravy with the corn cakes which really made it winner winner chicken dinner. I would come back for the cornbread cakes. The service was great and of course the tea was good. A solid place with lots of customers for good reason. The food is good and you can slow down and enjoy good southern Hospitality. read more

Pete's is one of my favorite places to eat breakfast. However, they are not enforcing Covid restrictions. We went there this morning. People sat at tables which were marked as closed and the servers served them. At one point every "4 top" was occupied more two tops than were supposed to be open were occupied. The person checking people out had no protective gear on (the servers wear face shields). No one is required to wear a face mask to enter and few people did. We won't be back until the Covid crisis is over. I'll update my review then. read more

There was no signage explaining the seating procedure, so I stood there awkwardly for a minute until the young lady behind the counter finally gave me a polite but inquiring look. I told her I didn't know where to sit, whereupon she lit up like a firefly and welcomed me. I felt something like a first time visitor in a southern church when she said "oh! You're new! Welcome! Sit anywhere you like!". Actually, that may not be the best analogy, for in a lot of southern churches the seats are claimed by members, and woe be unto you my child if you occupy one of these sacrosanct pew positions. So I found an empty table. My server was also very cheerful and friendly, and explained to me that there are basically two options. You can order from the menu--a sandwich or burger or hotdog or something of that ilk, or you can go to their cafeteria style serving area where you can get a combination of a meat and vegetables. I vacillated for a few minutes on this, and ultimately decided to ditch my original plan of getting my usual burger, hotdog, and fries, and opted instead for the southern style meat and vegetable offerings at the buffet area, for that seemed to be where everyone was going. The price was pretty reasonable, so I settled for quite a large array of things. This way I could get a good sampling of what everything is all about. Before I unpack this item-by-item, I think we need to face the simple fact: most (if not all) of the vegetables are canned. Some are spruced up with a couple of seasonings, but everything seems to me to be straight out of a can. Beef stew: a solid effort. Beef was reasonably tender and flavorful. But stew? Every recipe of beef stew I've ever looked at contains carrots, potatoes, and onions. None here. But it still tasted good. Greens: I suspect turnip and they were fine if you like straight out of the can turnip greens. Cabbage: Bland. Uninspired. Canned. Green beans: These were spruced up decently with seasoning and were good. Mac and Cheese: Macaroni. Cheese. Hard to mess it up. A marriage between these two wonderful items. It was fine. Cornbread: I have never seen cornbread like this. It really should be called cornbread pancakes. Whatever you call it, they weren't good. Bland, tasteless, except for the burned surface on the outside. Mashed Potatoes: Hospital mashed potatoes have more flavor. Painfully instant and not good. Pintos: Not bad, but still canned and pretty basic. Texas Pete helped. Sweet tea: Slightly better than average. This place is packed full of locals who apparently all know each other, love the food, and bestow four and five star ratings on Pete's. I don't to see what all the fuss is about. It does not rise to that high of a rating. It is, at best, just good. Cafeteria food. The workers are very nice and the price is very reasonable. But the food is just OK. Hey! And, if anything, the biscuit is even better - and they now offer a Chicken Biscuit - simply excellent. Unfortunately, the fried cornbread has not improved. Pete's Place, Gibsonville NC. On a recent trip over to Gibsonville I was looking for something to eat. Its a little past prime time lunch on a Saturday. I hardly ever come here so I'm trying to figure this place out. Nicer looking high-end place is closed. I'm not in the mood for BBQ. I see this little place sitting all alone just one click off the main drag and decided to give them a try. Definitely an old school small diner type place here. We go in, nobody there. Some older guy is sitting on a prep table, behind the counter, eating a piece of fried chicken. I'm glad you like your own food, but this is just not sanitary, and very gross looking. There are a couple servers milling around. I got the same strange welcome as another yelper did. Silence on entry then the old sit anywhere you like and an offer to view the hot bar. I wasnt a local and they knew it. The hot bar was a small float at the end of the counter, and from what I could see it just didnt look appetizing. However I was willing to give them a shot until they tell me they take cash or checks only. No cards!!! Now there is just no reason in this world NOT to take cards in this day and age. I can accept credit cards on my phone! I had seen and heard enough, out the door I went. Thats right people, I have a choice too and I use it! read more

Pete's Grill is a destination for you! The hometown grill on the corner, fresh, delicious ingredients, worth the wait! We had breakfast with crispy hash browns, over easy eggs, link sausage and fluffy white bread toast. People were patiently waiting at the door for a table, folks politely pointed out empty tables to the persons in front of them. Many were locals, but made us feel extra special. We didn't know the pay was cash or check, so I went running to the car for some extra dollars. A man in the parking lot said he would pay for our meal- we were so touched and happily gave the incredible waitress a $10 tip. When I asked the waitress, I was given 2 dollars back. So, 1 egg was 7.00. I sometimes come and get a pancake- the breakfast is good. First time ever in Gibsonville so I stopped here for lunch. SUMMARY: Pros: -Super friendly service -Food portions are very good -Overall value is good -99% Sanitation Rating (but see below) -Food is decent, down-home style (i.e. functional but not fancy) Cons: -A bit off the beaten track (though that might be a positive...) -Food server using bare hands -Seating can be tight during peak times LOCATION: Located a block of Main Street. Fortunately, Gibsonville is so small that you almost CAN'T not find it. Parking is to the side of the building. FOOD: The single fold menu is basically 50% breakfast choices and 50% meat and veggie(s) + sandwiches/burgers/hot dogs. There is a good variety though nothing jumped off the page as being particularly unique. The iconic meat & veggie option comes in 1, 2 or 3 veggie choices or all veggies no meat. The meat changes by day (with bbq pork ribs being the guest of honor on my visit) or fried chicken which I take to be always available. I will say that the fried chicken looked excellent and many of my fellow diners choose it. However, since I haven't had pork ribs in awhile I went with them. I added collards and green beans ($6.5) (there is about 6-8 vegetable choices) and a hot dog ($1.5). I knew I was over-ordering, as all true Americans do, but I figured I might not be back any time soon so I better mix it up while I can. This also comes with a beverage and bread choice. I loved how the girl at the drink/bread station automatically went to the "did you want sweet tea with that" position. Oh, North Carolina please don't change. As charming as that was, her next action raced to the other end of the spectrum. I picked the cornbread and she reached under the counter and placed two of the silver-dollaresque pieces on my plate with her BARE hands. Shudder. However, I'm still alive so far in order to write this review. My ribs (this was a 5 rib rack) were very meaty and moist; requiring little effort to pull of the bone with good pork flavor. The tomato based bbq sauce was thick and a little on the sweet side. My personal preference leans smoky/spicy but I'm not knocking this version. I really enjoyed the collards as they had just enough of their original bitterness to remind you what they are. Green beans are normally one of my favorite vegetables but these were overcooked and mushy so no bonus points there. I did at least try the well-handled cornbread and thought they were solid. At a minimum, they didn't have that super-sweet taste that has gotten popular in cornbread. My all the way (mustard, slaw, chili) hot dog was good but standard. No one component stood out beyond the others and I thought the chili was too mild. Overall, including the out-of-code handling of the bread, I'd give the food a solid 3 stars. However, I would definitely like to try the fried chicken in the future. SERVICE: The service was very good. I got there about 12:40 and about 3/4 of the seats were occupied so I grabbed an open one while I could. A super-friendly server could tell I was a rookie and gave me a quick Pete's Grill remedial course in ordering. It is slightly deceptive unless you are paying attention. The meat and veggie options are served cafeteria style - head to the back and work your way forward. I ordered my hot dog off the menu and I assume that's how the other items are ordered too. Regardless, all four points of contact were very friendly and gracious. I think everyone but me was a regular/local so there was a lot of neighborly chatting. 4 stars for Service (the 5th star was shot down with the cornbread...) VALUE: My meat, 2 sides, hot dog and soda came to $8 flat. Without the unnecessary hot dog, my lunch would have been 6 bucks before tip. Given the size of the portions (see the picture of my plate), I would say this is definitely a deal. If you are in the neighborhood. I didn't see any menu items that seemed unreasonably priced. Solid 4 stars for value. ATMOSPHERE: Pete's Grill looks like a low-key mom and pop restaurant that has been around for decades. It won't show up in any fancy magazines but its clean and comfortable. The vibe is welcoming like many small town places. 3 stars for atmosphere. Overall, I'll definitely visit Pete's again despite the cornbread incident. On that visit, the chicken will be on top of the list. If you are in the area and looking for fanfare-free, down home southern cooking give them a try. I've never been disappointed at Pete's. It is your basic southern breakfast/lunch food, with incredibly friendly staff. Essentially a local version of crackle barrel. This place has exceptional southern style food. With prices soaring everywhere else, this place is pretty reasonable. Pete's also has a welcome atmosphere. I highly recommend the chicken pie, mac & cheese, and peach cobbler. They are all good enough to stand on their own. All the food I've had is good. Pete's also serves cornbread with every lunch meal, which is getting tougher to find in restaurants. If I'm in Gibsonville at lunch time, it's a sure thing I'm going to Pete's. The only detraction if I were going to find one would be that it get's pretty crowded at peak times. Go early or late. It's about as local as a joint can be. There is no chain feel about it.
