Jack's barbecue is not Jack's. It is Hursey's. And from what I had today this is not necessarily a good thing. More on that later. I actually came to Jack's today to check another establishment off the list of Our State Magazine's top thirty hot dog joints. So I ordered a hot dog all the way and a chopped barbecue plate. The hot dog was good but nothing special. The chili had a decent flavor, and the slaw was excellent. Otherwise, it was a pretty average hot dog. The barbecue was pretty disappointing. Totally devoid of smoke, it had a porcine taste reminiscent of a hog farm. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. They have it distributed by the ginormous wholesale branch of Hursey's. The hush puppies were properly cooked and had a good taste, but the fries were an abomination--old, freezer burned, and dried out. The sweet tea was excellent. Honestly, this place is a 2.5 for me, but I am rounding up based on the slaw, sweet tea, and the very kind, friendly, and attentive server. As for the hot dog and Our State Magazine's list, this one is another miss.

    Rather average Onion Rings.

Jack's just keeps the small town diner atmosphere going - daily meat & 2 specials, salads, and sandwiches. Stopped by recently, grabbed a Hot Dog, Cheeseburger, Tots, and an order of Onion Rings. The hot dog was solid, as always, and so was the burger. The tater tots were pretty good, though a little under cooked. The onion rings were very average. Service was excellent.

Hot, simple and cheap food in an old school diner. Jack's has been around for a long time. Walking in the door is certainly a blast from the past. And its busy. My wife and I stopped in around 4:30 for a late lunch. We were surprised to find that there was only space at the counter to eat. Not a problem for us but be prepared for that. The space is simply decorated. There are some relics from the past on the walls. From the counter you can watch them cook your food. I ordered the BBQ sandwich and shared tater tots and cheese sticks. There was nothing exciting about the BBQ. Really standard. Served hot in a steamed bun though. The tater tots were crispy and served hot though and the cheese sticks were quite good. Apparently the hot dogs are what they are known for and on my next visit that is what I'll try. The service was very friendly though they should streamline the payment process. There was a couple guys that waited a solid 15 minutes just to pay.. They were a little backed up, to be fair, but that's a long time to wait to make a simple transaction. If in Gibsonville I would recommend trying it. I don't know if I'd go too far out of my way though.

If you are looking for expertly smoked Lexington style bbq or ribs this is not the place for you. This is a 30 seat hole in the wall with standard bbq joint fare. There is a bbq pork dish on the menu, but i don't think it's a big seller. This is a burger and hot dog joint with friendly small town service. They also offer some sandwiches. I wish I could say the burger was very good, but it was just average. The chili cheese tots were pretty good. This is not the type of place that people go out of their way for, but rather grab some food while they are passing through downtown.

This review is really a 3.5 star rounded up. It's been 8 years since my last visit to Whitsett and…read morethe Red Oak Lagerhaus and Biergarten and I was excited to return. This visit was prompted by the recent opening of the Wursthaus that is serving up food consistently in addition to the food truck that is often on property. The inside of the lagerhaus is as lovely as I remember. I got a 6 beer flight so I could sample most of their delicious beers. There was steady business but it didn't feel too busy/full inside. Some people were opting to be outside at the fire pits. Not me. We stepped out to the Wursthaus to get lunch. The menu is pretty limited: Brat, Brat bites (cut up with no bun), frankfurter, and pretzel. Not sure if there is a launch menu or if this will be permanent. I got the hot dog with onions and I requested the mustard (that you "HAVE TO REQUEST" per the sign). It was fine. The mustard wasn't included so I had to return to the wursthaus window to get it. The bun was soft and the frankfurter a good size, overhanging the bun. The limited topping options and the DIY nature of the mustard was a little disappointing. My biggest gripe with this place is it feels like going to my grandparents house: there are so many rules. Don't back into parking spaces No kids Don't step on the grates Open door slowly No outside food And maybe there were more. Just feels really uptight for a nice space that probably should feel more relaxed. :shrug Still, I'll return for beer in the future.

I always want to try and support small business and hope the food is outstanding but today didn't make the mark. Very disappointed in the beef tips and gravy with mac & cheese and squash casserole. I saw a picture from another review and thought it looked very good but mine didn't look anything like the other customers. I was really shocked at how small the portion was especially with the sides and there was hardly any rice up under the beef tips. This is a $15 meal here, I think you could do better than this. I'm a mac & cheese connoisseur and your mac & cheese just doesn't do it for me. Hopefully you could see this constructive criticism and maybe tweak a few things to make it a better experience.
