I bought pet training from this location for my daughter to use on her new puppy. It cost me around $100 dollars and another $1700 to undo all the wrong that was done to this new puppy by the young trainer. The first session my daughter went alone, I went with them for the remaining classes. The trainer was young, very nice and I'm sure meant well. But the hour we were there I felt all we were learning was to watch the trainer feed treats to this puppy. The next session was more treats to a point that when we got back home the puppy got sick to its stomach. I called and asked the trainer not to give any more treats. She said that's the only way to make them understand. This is a small dog, she was always on her hind legs begging, this young trainer said that the puppy is dancing where as our other trainer said this was dominating issue! I knew the class was wrong I even mentioned it to the trainer, she said we should perhaps take private lessons with her. I don't think she was aware that there was usually only one other dog in the class with us. The most annoying part of our training at Petco was while we were having a session the trainer had to go to the register to ring someone up. I personally would talk anyone out of doing this kind of training and would recommend a trainer that would come to your home to train. read more

I don't come here very often because I like to buy my pet supplies in bulk and I only have a bunny. However, the staff has always been friendly and helpful in answering my questions. Prices are fair, and I go with the cheaper Petco brand if I can. Uffie loves the recycled paper bedding. There are a good variety of small animal snacks. I've also bought fish and supplies here. I bought a Whisper filter and asked if it would be too strong for guppies and they said no. The guppies got sucked into the filter. Then I realized it was probably my fault for installing it in a bowl instead of a tank. And one time I had to wait a while for help. But if you know what you need it's quick, easy, and convenient! read more

This Petco blows! I went here to get some crickets for Peg, my frog, and they only had big crickets, and almost all of them were dead. I bought a box anyway, for $4.99, and only about 7 were alive. By 6 PM it was time to feed Peg but only 2 were alive. I also need a bigger terrarium for Peg and they only have small ones or GIANT ones. Nothing in between. The people who work there are surly and can barely converse besides monosyllabic words or simple grunts. It's not well-stocked and as someone else mentioned, it seems dusty. Drive to Needham or Brighton instead of going to this place! read more

This store is adequate. It's in a convenient location for people in Waltham, Watertown, and the north side of Newton. It is clean and the fish look healthy and well taken care of. Good selection of fish filters, decorations and cleaning supplies. However, unlike the Brighton location, I've never actually seen a person at the Waltham store who is actually working the fish area (a dedicated employee only working the tanks). Maybe it's the times of day I've gone, but there's never been anyone there to help or answer questions. One time I was in there, some degenerate walked in with a huge German Shepard. The thing was barking, growling, bearing its teeth, and lunging at people. Thank god it was leashed. I don't think those types of baby-eaters should be allowed at Petco, nor their degenerate owners, but management let them in. That's my only beef with this place. read more

This place is always so dirty and dusty. I usually have weird interactions with the staff, like the time I was told that I had "too many coupons" (something was on sale and I also had a coupon). It took a long time to sort out. I wish Pet Supplies Plus hadn't closed. One nice thing about Petco is they have those surveys attached to the receipt that allow you to get a few dollars off. This Petco always has our pups food and treats in stock, although we have not found this to be consistent with all their stores. Staff is friendly, willing to help and clearly loves animals. Staff has also been fairly knowledgeable in the past when we've had questions as well. Our pup was having stomach problems and the associate suggested adding a little canned pumpkin to his food! It worked and our pup is doing much better. Our little guy is always excited when he sees where we've pulled into! They even let us fill up a free baggie with some treats on his birthday. read more

After calling ahead, I brought my dog Winston in for grooming right away since the lady told me she would be leaving at 5pm. Once there, I saw she was taking more dogs for grooming , which is fine with me but she wanted to put my dog in the crate until she was done. I opted to take him outside for 5 min instead while waiting for my dog's turn. I came back and left my dog with the groomer. After some time ( 30 min ) I wanted to see how my dog was doing and I realized that the lady had taken another dog for grooming. When I asked where my dog was she told me she had put him in a crate to dry. When I went back to check on him I found him cowering in the crate with two big blowers going right next to him. My dog was terrified in there. First of all, the price for grooming at this location is not cheap at all, so I was expecting the groomer to take their time and groom my dog in an attentive manner, not locking him in a dirty crate with loud blowers and then leaving him alone. I have a fan and a crate at home so I could have easily done the same thing at home if I wanted to frighten him. Secondly, why would you ask me to bring my dog right away because you are leaving soon and then take additional dogs to do at the same time? Please don't take that many if you dont know how to manage them. Better service is needed. Don't try to clean as many dogs as possible , please treat our pets better as they are part of our family and deserve a better service, especially for the price they are charging. I don't have any pets, so I only come here to look at them once in a while with my wife. The place seems decently stocked with animals and supplies. The prices are reasonable comparing with other pet stores. I do agree with the other people that it is quite dirty and not well-kept. Adequately meets my needs considering this is a national chain. Its generally clean and shelves are in order. Staff has limited knowledge of products so do your research online but they are friendly and so is the parking (plenty of it). If you are uber picky about what you feed your pet you will be disappointed as they mostly carry the big name brands also known as the worst brands of pet food. I being one of those people am limited to 2 different brands and if they are out of that, I have to head into Cambridge. So far, so good. read more

I have had nothing but positive experiences with this store and their dog training services. When my husband and I got our Shiba Inu puppy last fall we decided to enroll him in the puppy class to help socialize him and work on some basics. The trainer Mia was excellent and very knowledgeable. She taught us how to deal with some of his problem behaviors such as playing too aggressively with the other dogs and he is such a well behaved dog now. We enjoyed the puppy 1 class so much that we decided to enroll him in puppy 2. People comment all the time about how friendly our dog is "for a Shiba" and we definitely have Mia to thank for that. We still visit the store frequently to pick up supplies and would happily come back for more training if needed. read more

A few employees are amazing but when you go in to get multiple cases of dog food and the associate is to high to look to see if they have more in back that is the breaking point. I generally dont like being helped by someone who smells so much of weed that i could get a contact high talking to them for several mintues. Some of your associates my also need to learn if you ask someone if they need help you stop long enough for an answer and don't have the customer have to say yes when the associate is 5-10 feet. read more

Dani is a game changer, she always greets us with a smile and lets our children play with the ferrets and has even assisted my youngster in counting his change to make a purchase! Decided to take my dog Winston to Petco to get groomed, he was scheduled at 9am. Groomer walks in at 9:20. Ok I'm chronically late, I get it. While I was talking to the manager to make sure I was at the right store, The groomer walks in. She's holding her own dog and yelling, "I'm here!!" As she rushes straight to the back. I go to the back where the grooming is happening and she hangs up her personal call and makes a joke that I got her busted bc she was trying to sneak in. Cool. Before we do paper work I hand him over and she puts him in a crate and he's terrified and it always makes me sad. She says he'll be done by noon...noon?! Ok fine...I grab one item in the store and head up front to cash out and as I am, the groomer comes up and asks the manager what coffee he wants from DD....so my dog is locked in a crate freaking out so you can snag a coffee?! And your freaking late?? No apology from her either!! I should of just grabbed my dog and left but I didn't. Upon my return I pulled the manager aside to let him know the situation (of which he was also a part of by being totally fine with her waltzing in late and then letting her leave to get coffee, one for him as well). I hate confrontation, I hate complaining and I have been in some sort of customer service my whole life. I'm very sympathetic and often let things go but I hate terrible service. I was so nervous to say something but I did and I was a s polite as I could be about it. He was apologetic and gave me two 4$ coupons for the next time I come back. As I was leaving he made a comment about how when she's back there he doesn't usually know what's going on with her schedule and didn't realize she had gotten coffee. I was dumbfounded bc He was the one I had talked to when she was late and I was who he was cashing out when she then asked him what coffee he wanted. Dumbfounded. Never going back. read more

Having recently adopted a couple of cats, I went to Petco to get all the supplies I needed for our new little friends. The first guy who helped us was very helpful and pleasant but the rest of the people we interacted with were not so great. One woman felt the need to tell my son what to do and not do, on several occasions. As far as I know, I'm pretty sure that's my job and my son was not misbehaving. He was just looking at the cat toys. And the following time I went, the manager asked me where I got my cats. I told her that their previous owners had to give them up because of worsening allergies. I got an unsolicited lecture about people who adopt cats and are irresponsible and then surrender them. She went on and on basically judging the previous family. I did not ask for her thoughts on the matter and I felt that her judgment was very unprofessional. My cats previous owners were devastated to give them up. I'm all for animal rights and support but not everyone is a malicious pet abandoner. Sometimes it just doesn't work out and it's sad. And sometimes I just want to buy pet stuff without someone lecturing me or my son. read more

Selection seemed ok. Place really was rather dull and dirty. But the service was what got 2 stars. As a matter of fact, only reason it wasnt 1 was because I finally found what I was looking for. Service was really non existent, like I had to hound people just to get an answer to basic question. If I didnt ask, I definitely wouldnt have ever been offered assistance. I went to this Petco to buy cans of cat food that was advertised as on sale.. Upon walking into the store my first impression was of a dark space (very few of the ceiling lights were on), dirty, and disorganized. I wasn't able to find the cat food I needed so I went to find an employee. It took 10 minutes to find someone. The employee showed me where the cat food I wanted was. It was a very poor selection.The store only had 3 varieties out of the 7 the brand has. I bought a couple cans of each. I don't think I'll return to this store. read more

I have generally liked this store -- find the staff to be quite knowledgeable. That said, they do need to hire more help. I went in today to make a simple purchase (2 fish) and knew exactly what I wanted. For 15 minutes, it seemed that the check out clerk was the only employee in the store. Finally, someone else appeared from the back and as I stood by waiting for him he went off course and was intercepted by someone else. I waited another 15 minutes, watching them chat, and then I left. I might expect delays on a Saturday morning but late morning, mid-week? No. I recommend that they install a take a number system like the one at Waltham Stop and Shop's Deli dept. I wouldn't mind waiting a little but only if I knew that I wouldn't be overlooked. read more

Terrible experience having my sheltie groomed. I gave specific instructions to only give the dog a bath and trim a bit around the private areas but they ended up butchering my poor sheltie around the face and long coat. Shelties are supposed to have long coats and now I have to wait years for the hair to grow back the way it's supposed to. I came home and my wife nearly had a heart attack. Never going here again. I tried the grooming at this Petco due to unavailability at my local Petco, where I have always gone...and I have to say although the people were very nice...it was, by far, the worst groom my poor guy has ever received....They seemed a bit unsure of how to cut him, which should have been my red flag, since I have never really been asked by the other place before. I think, given the breed, they have a pretty good idea of what he is supposed to look like. When I picked him up, he was practically shaved to the skin on his front legs...he had a cut on his leg, and what looked to be a patch of possible 'razor burn'? The guy told me about it and I let it go (although it had never happened anywhere else). Then when I got to the register my little guy urinated a HUGE puddle, as if he hadn't gone for hours (again, a new experience). When I looked down I realized that there was blood as well. Turns out they also cut the nails too short (yet, ANOTHER new thing). I felt sooo bad for my little guy. We will NOT be back again. Yes, nice people, but apparently not well-trained! read more

I called to see appointment availability for my dog for grooming. I had been scheduled for grooming at another Petco, however the groomer had called out sick. When asking if they had any availability today, as they were the next closet groomers, the groomer was extremely mean and used many curse words. These were not directed at me, but at the employee who had answered my call. I informed the employee who answered my call, that while he was very nice and empathetic to my situation, I would not let a man with that attitude (who had just shown up to work at 9am) touch my dog. I am a veterinarian and I work with animals all day too, and understand its challenges and for my one day off I wanted to make sure my own dog was taken care of. I cannot speak for his grooming skills, but I am highly disappointed in his demeanor, for his lack of empathy and rude attitude. I will not be going back for any grooming through this facility. read more

This is for the grooming area of this Petco not the entire store. While I was there I witnessed a dog jump out of a tub and splat on the floor while an employee was drying his fur. The girl had no control over the dog and the assistant manager had to stop what she was doing to help her. The dog was not being difficult, the girl just had no control of what she was doing. The guy cutting my dogs nails seemed very unsure of himself and cut the quick of my dogs nail. He also walked away from her while she was hooked to the table twice. She almost fell off and would have choked due to the way the hook them to the table. I made him stop because my dog was so stressed out. I will never go back! The assistant manager, whose name is Colleen I think, seemed to be very good. If you do go there I would ask for her everyone else seemed quite incompetent. read more

The store itself is fine in terms of customer service, but overall I give it only 2 stars because of the "dog trainer" they employ there. Mary I think her name is. I feel badly for the people I see in there with their puppies getting "trained" because they do not know yet that she is awful and certainly no dog trainer! I had brought my dog in for training because it was the cheapest around, well you certainly get what you pay for. When she went to give him a treat his teeth touched her hand (because he is a bulldog and his huge underbite ofcourse makes his teeth protrude). She started yelling saying that he bit her and that he is aggressive and that he has to leave! I could not believe what was happening. His teeth simply grazed her fingers when he went for the treat. The dog is not aggressive in any way, shape or form, loves people, and has never bitten anyone. The drama queen said "I'm bleeding, I'm bleeding", so I said let me see your hand, needless to say there was absolutely no blood or mark there. Please do not take your dog there to get trained, you'll will be wasting your time and money! I had let the manager know what happened, and he did give me a refund for the training, but unfortunately she was still allowed to work there. read more

I picked up my dog and noticed his nails were very short...After asking the head groomer not to "grind" his nails only to cut them, he ground them anyway...almost all of my dogs quicks were hit leaving them bloody and exposed. We have been bringing our dog here for 2 years and now we will not step foot in there even for a toy. read more

WHERE IS ROB THE GROOMER? GET HIM BACK! This place has gone downhill since he left. That's all I really have to write but Yelp requires me to write a longer review, so......for 8+ years I've brought three generations of Labradoodles and Goldens to Petco, first to Jess then to Rob. They always did a terrific job. My dogs left the store smelling great and with a great haircut--okay, a couple of times they had to be shaved down, but that was my fault because I neglected to brush them! After Rob left I decided to still bring Mabel and Brady to the salon, since they were familiar with that environment. Big mistake. I should have never gone back. Two different groomers have tried to work with my dogs without success. The first visit back the haircuts were uneven and their ears weren't plucked or cleaned. I called to complain and they gave me a coupon for $15 off next time and said that another more experienced groomer would take care of them next time. So I went back a 2nd time. I dropped them off at 9 and they weren't ready until 2:00! And this time one of my dogs came out with razor burns on his underside, and my other dog's nails were cut way too short and started to bleed during the drive home. She required a vet visit and my truck's interior required a detailing. I called to complain and the groomer told me to call the phone number on my receipt. No apology or explanation. It's sad that a business can go from great to terrible just because of a staff change! As far as their dog training services go, I give Mary 5+ stars. Though it's been a few years, in the past me and my family have brought several dogs to her classes and Mary was always patient with our puppies (and their parents)! read more

A few weeks ago I brought my cat in for a bath and cut. I patiently waited almost four hours then called the store and she said my cat was done. When I entered the store the groomer was right there at the entrance (odd) and told me that my cat's tummy might be irritated because she had to shave it, handed me my cat and started walking away. I asked her what she meant and she said "your cat bit me" and showed me her arm and my cat's teeth mark. I felt so bad I started crying in the parking lot. When I got home and took my cat out of her box she had an inch long slice on her leg and her blanket had blood on it. I should have called the store to complain but I felt bad about my cat biting her. Now I wish I had contacted them because my vet bill was over $100!!!!! My sister takes her dog there to be bathed and cut tells me that the guy is great and maybe I should try him. I don't think so!!!! read more
