Petco emailed me saying I'd earned two $5 coupons. "Come on down and spend them!" So I did. They were having a tank sale. Despite the mixed reviews on the Imagitarium line, I figured a 2.5-gallon rimmed tank was low-risk. How bad could it be? Laughably bad. I got it home, set it on a level stand, and the frame was so badly warped it couldn't get all four corners on the surface at the same time. I'd heard about issues with the rimless Imagitariums, but being unable to manufacture a 2.5-gallon rimmed tank correctly is wild. Whatever, things slip through QC from time to time. I went back to exchange it. The employee explained they couldn't do an exchange, that I'd have to return it and purchase another one. Fine, no problem. Except the return didn't credit back the $10 in store coupons I'd used. To replace the defective product they sold me, they wanted me to pay $10 more than I originally paid. For what it's worth, the staff here have always been friendly and knowledgeable. This isn't about them. It's about the store refusing to exchange a defective item. I'd bought cat litter here for the last 15 years, but I won't be back. read more

Petco did a huge online campaign for Valentine's Day promoting their "Smoochable Snouts Valentine's Social". This location was scheduled for 2-4pm with a photo booth and also things for kids. I was dogsitting so I met up at the store with my dog as well as a friend, her daughter and their dog. The sign was at the front of the store for the event, we looked around and saw nothing. A girl who was working asked if we needed any help, we pointed to the sign and said we came for the photos. She didn't know anything about it (not HER fault, that is a fault of the store manager) and went in search of a coworker for more info. A not-so-friendly young guy said they weren't doing it - so why have a sign???? - but pointed to some free treats if we wanted any (no). Petco's marketing department shipped them the sign, surely the store manager knew to actually do something for the event? Nice idea by Petco with a bad execution in Waltham. I looked on Facebook later (where I had seen it advertised in the first place) and people around the country posted that they had also gone to stores that weren't doing anything. Also had a 20% off storewide coupon for the day but didn't bother to buy anything. It's a convenient location but the store also needs a remodel so it isn't stuck in 2005. read more

This store is cruel to the parrots in their care. s"To be honest, stores should not be selling parrots because the store is not able to educate or screen potential buyers. But even without that, they are cruel to the parrots in their care. I was at the store the other day and there was this poor parrot cowering in the back, scared to death. There was no opportunity for it to have privacy and calm down. The sign said something like "I'm shy and adjusting to the new environment". Adjusting? It was scared to death. And my guess is that these parrots do not receive their suggested 12 hours of sleep given the store hours and lack of ability to cover the cages. I brought this to the attention of the cashier and he said that there was nothing that he could do. Please do not purchase a pet from here and suggest that they stop selling animals, especially birds. This is inhumane. read more

Wow. Jake, the assistant manager, needs a promotion, ASAP! He expressed to me how much he really cares for animals and enjoys working for Petco with the wealth of knowledge he's got (trust me. I told him that with his knowledge and ability to do well with customers, such as myself...he should come work sales with me, lol. His heart is definitely with the pet store!) He did everything AND went above and beyond. Ended up with two rats (which was my original reason for going), a bunch of items I didn't necessarily need AND two Vital Care memberships for my rats and fish. I will say...had he not broken it down for me as to what my savings will be now and in the future I would not have purchased the care package! But, after his explanation, I fully believed I NEEDED this product, haha. Treat him well! People who go above and beyond like he does are FAR and few between (in ANY industry). Easy to find what I need.for my dog. She gets the regular large breed kibble from Purina, and the store stocks two sizes. I know where the bags are and what I want. I've tried ordering from Amazon for the convenient delivery, but my experience is that Amazon ships whatever they like. It's always been Purina, but some types that my dog is not used to and doesn't like. Petco is nearby, and I often stop on my way to or from the kennel in Watertown where she boards and gets daily playtime. Petco staff is great! read more

Labor Day around 4.00 o'clock was at Petco in Waltham. Went to the grooming section. There was a groomer I think named Laura, thin with curly hair grooming a larger dog with long hair. She had her back to me and did not see me. I could not believe how rough she was with the dog, just grooming front leg dog was very nervous and she was forceable dragging his leg out with enough force to damage the dog. Then she saw me and started to be nice to the dog, she finally got tired of me watching so she took the dog into the back room to finish cutting the nails. Then she kept peeking out to see if I had left, then she came out to look and ran back quickly. This person was abusive and very rough with the dog. When she was trying to cut the back nails dog was almost hanging himself with fear. that is when she took the dog out the back. This is very dangerous to have such a person in charge of grooming any pet. I spoke to the manager so am hoping she has been fired by now. There needs to be live cameras on them at all times. This is unacceptable behavior for someone whom e trust our pets to. read more

I'm bummed I didn't catch his name- but the man with the long hair was incredibly helpful! He seemed to be the only one working the store yesterday, but he was very patient, helpful, and took his time educating me to make sure I got the right product. I have a 7 month old puppy who had stool issues for almost a week. His fecal tests came back negative so we know he doesn't have parasites, and we figured it may be an allergy. I read that chicken is a common allergy in dogs, so I wanted to get kibble without it. I went to the grocery store and even the lamb, salmon, and beef kibble had some sort of chicken as one of the top ingredients. We wanted to week out chicken all together so I wanted something with ZERO chicken. So I left and went to Petco. Petco had a wide selection of chicken free kibble and the employee walked me though the benefits of each one. He said he was very passionate about dog nutrition and even used to make his own, so I trusted him! We went cold Turkey on the food switch and it actually went great. Our pup's stool is back to normal... must have been really allergic to chicken... read more

If you are planning to go and buy cat/dog food for your furry friend. Please be advised that there are a lot of empty shelves. They do not have many types of dry food. And if your pet eats a particular brand or particular type, there is a possibility that they do not sell them. However, on the website, it will show you "in stock." My advice to you is to call them before actually going there to make sure that they have the requested the item in stock. I gave them 2 stars only because I love their grooming. They have a great deal for grooming needs. My dog looked so pretty after her haircut. The lady was so friendly and she was super nice with my dog as well. Although they usually have a good selection of supplies, of all the times I've been here I've only once met a kind employee. The staff is always SO rude and condescending and are often too busy on their phones to ring you up or help you out. Even when you need help in the store and there's a line to the register, NO one will come to help you. I once went to the register to ask for some fish and waited 40 minutes for the man to finish his phone call with his girlfriend before he joined me with an attitude. They will also often charge you extra for unnecessary purchases you did not approve of or double charge you. Definitely do not recommend this location. If you love your dog, do not take him/her to this groomer. Place is filthy. Groomer seems to be angry all the time. When I walked in, he didnt see me first time but I saw him how he was carrying that poor dog like it was baby - by the dog's front underarms. You don't do that. He rushed back inside when he saw me and i literally heard him make that angry growling noise in the back and came out all angry. Like wtf bro? Later I heard dog cries in the back. I think he's taking his anger out on the pets. BEWARE. In the end, they lost a paying customer and Jonathan lost a well-tipper regular. read more

If you have a cat do yourself a favor and DO NOT GO TO THIS VETCO. I have never had a more unprofessional vet ever. After being 30 minutes late she refused to issue the vaccines to my cat due to his overstimulation. Maybe it was because you were 30 minutes late and we were in a petco. Additionally, when the vet assistant asked if she was sure she couldn't work on my cat she replied with "yes hes a bengal". I do not know how she was able to pass vet school being such a condescending idiotic person. When asked if she can at least put him on the table to see if he was really too temperamental she refused and said she "just knows" she couldnt work on him then went on to explain to me how dogs are easier to work with than cats. I will not be returning and I will be sure to post on facebook groups, tell friends and coworkers, and basically tell anyone I know with a cat to not come here. Shame on the vet and I hope she doesn't have a cat. read more

When I went to pick up my dog, both groomers left the dogs alone, one groomer was on break and the other was hanging around the register talking with other employees. I had to go looking for someone to check me out and get my dog. When I spoke to groomer and store manager about dogs being left alone, both were unconcerned and seemed like it was no big deal. AVOID THE BAIT AND SWITCH/UNCARING dog groomers. I went online to get my dog groomed at Petco Waltham and was quoted $55, which amongst other things, included nail trimming. I had been there once before and the woman pressured and upsold me on a bigger package than I wanted. This time I went prepared. I got there, the price magically rose from $55 to $60 and then she informed me that if I wanted the nails trimmed it would be an additional $10. I needed my dog groomed by the next day (Family coming into town) and so I begrudgingly accepted. I noticed my dog noticeably shaking as I left him there with the same woman (Something he only had previously done at the vet and never with his old groomer that unfortunately moved away). I was curious as to why. After reading all of the reviews here of how they treat the dogs there, it is no wonder and now I feel even worse about leaving him there. My wife went to pick him up and noticed the female groomer aggressively yelling at my dog after my dog barked at another dog he saw in the store. She, obviously, didnt know my wife was picking him up and probably would not have acted that way if she did. I put all of this down in their "Please rate us" email and was surprised when a district manager (Or maybe store manager, I am not sure) must have read my review and contacted me about it. He explained to me what upselling was (I already knew) and how Petco expects their employees to do that. Fair enough I said. There is a difference though between upselling and saying something is one price and charging another, in addition saying services that were part of one package aren't, and you need to pay an additional fee for it. He would never directly address the fact that they are blatantly saying something is one price online and charging another in person though. I'm assuming, like most companies, the online website and the individual stores have very little to do with each other so he couldn't really speak to it. To his credit, he offered me a refund and/or my next one free. I declined both offers as I wanted to really get my point across that I'm not some scammer trying to get a free grooming, I'm a legit pissed off customer that would like some direct action to be taken to treat dogs better (and people) at their facility. Recently I paid a visit to this location to have my very matted Maine Coon cat shaved. Their expert cat groomer gave Lynx a shave, not too short, super smooth and even with no extra hairs hanging around. She did it very quickly too- I was able to grab coffee and go to the pharmacy next door and by the time I got back she was done. (Keep in mind my cat is on the calmer side, and no one was in line in front of me, so this may not be the typical experience.) $60 well spent. Looking to shave your kitty? I am a new dog owner, of a beautiful pup I called Petco for grooming availability and I spoke with Lisa. Lisa was absolutely RUDE on the phone while I was asking her questions about the grooming services. I was never rude or disrespectful to her in anyway to warrant that kind of behavior, I asked why she was being rude, and she said because I was taking too long on the phone, and so I checked the time 2:32 seconds. When I asked her name she hung up the phone, and called back and she finally told me her name and hung up. I have never experienced such horrible customer service. I no longer feel comfortable bringing my pup there due to the hostility I had experienced over the phone. read more

He look suspiciously at me, jumped in his car and left. I looked in the window to see if Mary noticed, she'd vanished again. She left the store vulnerable to shoplifters. I went to CVS and saw Mary entering as I was leaving. I went back to Petco to tell them what I saw. They thanked me. read more

This is a review for the grooming department. After our dog was sprayed by a skunk we took him to Rob in the grooming department. He was wonderful with our skittish dog. Our dog was also shedding and when we picked him up couldn't believe how fantastic he looked (and how much skinnier). Never coming back here. The first time the dog groomer lost my dog's tick collar and tried to give me someone else's tick collar. She kept telling me that the dog didn't have it on at drop off and one of her staff kept telling her that my dog had it on at drop off. What a liar. Our second visit was fine with a different groomer. So I decided to go back. I had to call the store three times on different days to make an appointment. I have had good experiences here. I bring my dog in, we look around and if we need anything I just ask someone. The staff always helps out and they are always friendly and polite. My mother has her miniature long-haired dachshund groomed by Jonathan and he does excellent work. He also is able to trim my dog's nails without scaring the dog or me. My trips to Petco are usually relaxed and it's an opportunity for my dog to meet and greet other dogs which he thoroughly enjoys. I didn't like PetSmart because they are constantly trying to sell you Banford doggie insurance. Pet Supplies Plus is like walking through a maize of cornrows, you can't see two isles over, too claustrophobic for me. As long as I have a pet I will take it to Petco because that's "Where the pets go." read more

Slightly better than average pet stores this Petco offers supplies for just about every kind of pet one can imagine. Since dogs and cats are among the most popular around there are more products for them than for others. There's also a large selection devoted to fish and birds, a respectable area for lizards, and a copious section for birds. Wild birds aren't too high on Petco's list, apparently, as there are fewer bird feeders and a relatively small amount of bird seed. Prices for this Petco are in line with other major pet stores in the area; however this location doesn't seem to offer as many deeply-discounted items as certain of the smaller chains. Nevertheless, the staff is friendly and patrons have been known to bring their pets into the store without objections from the management. That's OK any day in my book. read more

As far as Petco's go this one is pretty good! The prices at Petco/Petsmart sort of places are good (I still prefer to buy my dog supplies from dog.com), but the people who work at this petco are really nice. There's this one girl there who works nights and weekends who's absolutely fantastic. She was very helpful and friendly with our puppy. It's not the cleanest store I've been to, but provides your basic supplies. We also got our vaccines at a low cost clinic here (www.luvmypets.com) and the vet there was great - experienced and gentle. Get there right when they open or earlier to avoid the long line that forms. They also have pet adoptions fairly regularly - call them to see! read more

I was very annoyed at one cashier. Every friggen time i would go and check out, he would ask me if would like to donate. So i finally snapped and whipped out two of my bank cards. One card, a proceed of it went to Defenders of Wildlife and the other was for the Humane Society. Then I told him that I just adopted a cat from the Animal Rescue League of Boston.....so i've done my part. He didn't say anything after that anymore. read more

This Petco now has grooming onsite. Not sure why someone said before it did not, maybe it did not have it at the time. The grooming staff is fabulous. They have dog training classes onsite as well and once a month shot clinics for less than cost of a trip to the vet. I own two turtles, a cat and a dog. I find all the items I need there. Especially the turtle supplies. The petco brand of scoopable litter for the cat is great. You can bring your empty container back for a refill at a discount price. More importantly, the cat box doesn't smell at all using this litter! I agree the staffing is minimal but the people that are there are very friendly and helpful. read more

You might get lucky buying general pet supplies and you can always find that sale turtle log or cat pillow (how can you resist LOGS?!) but the customer service downright stinks. Don't expect a refund if you pay for a service (i.e. dog grooming, dog training) and don't receive it - you will get completely blown off. Even after their own corporate HQ tells them to be more ethical towards their customers. You're better off driving to a farther away pet store, ordering off their online website, or even just making your own pet food. Seriously. read more

I have come to this store since it is right near where I live. I have come in looking to buy hermit crabs for my class. Everytime I go in there, I have to look for someone to help me, since there is no sales associates around. Except for tonight(they had dog training class), the store is usually quiet. I have purchased over the past 2 months, 4 different hermit crabs; one died(from living for over a year and a half, and from another pet store), one died(from this store), another was very slow walking, and not very active. The last one just recently died. So I am not sure if the hermit crabs are sick, or what, but they are kind of a disappointment. I ended up buying a new one(I work with 3 and 4 year old), and they love them. I was given promt service, but was told that the return was passed the 15 days. I understand the policy, but some of those days I wasn't at school(weekend). Last time, the manager let me get away with it(it was 4 days past the 15 day refund). I was going to ask for the manager, but there was already register problems, and I didn't feel well to begin with. read more

I'm moving from San Diego to Newton so decided to find closest petco. MISTAKE! It smelled like animal urine. There were lots of boxes in the aisles that needed to be unpacked. I wanted to buy an dog pen and they didn't have any. I missed my San Diego stores immediately. I'll never go back. It was like a sad representation of how petco is run. I want to first say the pictures linked to this location is WRONG. I don't know what PETCO they took it from, but it is far from this location looks like. Like all my other reviews, this one is largely based on service. Unfortunately this is the closest Petco to where I live so I go here. The managers who work here are not just rude and unprofessional, but sadly ill trained. The only sole reason this place received an extra star is due to the trainer and associate that works there named, Mary. She is unfortunately the only dim light amongst the more depressing employees who work for a very ill trained management staff. I have had both experiences with the store manager as well as her supervisors there. While I am always friendly regardless of the service, I do expect a certain level of the same respect if not more because I am a paying customer. While the store is ample in it's selection, the staff always looks so unhappy, you really just want to get your stuff and go. Here are the specifics: There is this one supervisor there (woman in her 20's with tattoos and thicker in body size latino/black since there are two supervisors I want to be specific). 50% of the time I have gone to this Petco I am subjected to listening to 100% of her conversations with other employees and customers. She is loud, tactless, and ill trained. Most of the time I am able to tune her out, but literally one time I had to listen to her argue with a customer about a fish he was exchanging, but having to pay still. I understand that an exchange is an exchange, but what upset him was that she was not successfully able to explain to him why he still had to pay a difference in the exchange. Customer service 101 is that you never argue back with the customer, but if you are going to stand your ground in which she was, she needed to at least explain to him the root of his issue. Instead I had to listen to her repeat herself over and over the same thing without rectifying his question, "WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY ANYTHING AT ALL FOR AN EQUAL EXCHANGE". I even listened to her say it was an equal exchange, but he still had to pay. It doesn't work that way, you don't tell someone something that is true, and then contradict the whole thing by saying something else. I tried my best to tune her out like I usually do when she is talk-shouting like she does, but the subject itself started to irk me because she so poorly dealt with the issue. In between her arguing with the customer she would throw in a "I am trying to help you, I am trying to explain to you" She was not. As I paid for my things, she was still arguing with him. I wanted to walk over to her and tell her what he needed to hear from her "process of payment he did with original purchase in which that is where the credit went back to, and so he was responsible to pay for it in another method"...but I needed to get out of there, and vowed to do one better and write to the company so perhaps I would save some other poor soul from dealing with her. Besides this incident, I also had a personal one with her before this. We went to do an exchange (what a coincidence) on dog food. The one we returned let's say cost $50 and the one we bought cost $55. My fiance was paying so I did not pay attention at first, but she ended up charging him $55 and when he questioned it she went into some random explanation of the exchange and being non-confrontational as he is, he accepted it and walked away. I was looking at dog toys the whole time so did not see the exchange between them, but when we went back to the car he looked upset and puzzled and proceeded to explain to me what happened. It was clear as day that she double charged us as she never returned the first dog food in the first place and that is why we ended up paying full price. What upset me the most was that she was not able to see this herself and then proceeded to concoct some weird explanation that did not make sense to justify her own lack of training. How many other unknowing customers has she done this with. Not to sound spiteful, but the fact that I've had to listen to her educate customers on animals and her knowledge in them (that she always seems to proud to voice loudly and confidently), I can't fathom how she is not able to do the basic supervisory duties as refunds and exchanges. When I went back to the store, I asked to talk to the store manager as I saw the picture displayed on the wall and knew she was working. Surprise, the store manager was just as nonchalant about the whole thing. She could care less. She asked to see the receipt, did the transaction and told me, "You're all set." You hear it all the time, I just wanted an apology. and I did. I understand she didn't do the wrong transaction, but it is your store, as a team everyone is held accountable good or bad, and you are apologizing for your team's mistake. I am just blown away by this location. read more
