Not only was the grooming itself excellent, but when I picked them up, it was obvious my grumpy old dog really liked Carlos (and he doesn't like anyone). The shop itself is small and very clean. Also worth mentioning is that there were a half dozen dogs in the grooming area, and they were all super calm and happy, and clearly felt very comfortable with Carlos. I highly recommend Soft Paws! I am so glad that I found Carlos and Soft Paws! My Himalayan kitten had severely matted fur and I knew she needed a lion cut badly. However she is so small and fussy that it was definitely a difficult job. Though I had to leave her at the groomer from 8:30am-5pm, and eventually help Carlos with managing her during the grooming, I was never fearful that Carlos didn't know what he was doing or would hurt her in any way. He is so friendly and professional and eventually we got the job done and she looks great! When my dog got older, she was more and more difficult to groom. I tried several groomers and I would get called to pick my dog up early because she was impossible to groom. I then tried Carlos at Soft Paws. He understood my dog's anxiety. He would work on her slowly, doing a little at a time and then give her a break. Then he would do a little more. It took a long time, but he was very patient. My dog always looked great when I went to pick her up. I cannot say enough good things about Soft Paws and I highly recommend this groomer. read more

I took my fluffy Himalayan - Ragdoll here for a lion cut. After a bad experience with another groomer in town I was nervous to leave my cat with anyone as he can get really upset. Carlos assured me my cat would be fine, and if he became too upset he would give me a call. Carlos listened to exactly what I wanted for my cat and was open to seeing the pictures of what I wanted/didn't want. I picked my cat up and he was so calm and relaxed. His haircut came out perfect! There were a few downsides- cost & time. To wash/cut my fluffy cat came to $90. I dropped my cat off at 8 am and he was not ready to be picked up until 4pm. read more

I brought my Havanese to be groomed here last fall after reading many good reviews on Yelp. The owner Carlos is an exceptionally nice guy and it is clear that he loves animals and has a nice way with them. My dog seemed very comfortable when I dropped him off and afterwards. He looked great when I picked him up and was wearing an adorable bandana! The location is very convenient in Newtonville center right off Walnut Street and there is plenty of street parking right in front of the shop. I think the prices were very reasonable. My only negative comment is that it took a long time for the dog to be groomed. I dropped him off at 9am and he was there until about 4pm. I had recently adopted the dog and he was very matted, so this might explain the time it took. I am still giving five stars because I think Carlos is a top notch groomer. read more

I have a 70lb collie mix with too much hair. He loves to swim and so far this summer we've been quite active in the pond. The fur was not drying completely and pup was starting to stink like some unholy swamp creature! Pup got the wash and cut. He looks and smells great! I have two fluffy-ass Ragdolls, which are rumored to be non-matting and non-shedding. Lies. I used to be able to keep up with daily grooming, but since I've started working 12 hour days at my business, it's gotten ugly. This week I decided that it was time for a kitty makeover. I've only gotten them groomed once before, at Toureen in Watertown. I had no basis for comparison at the time, so I was okay with how they returned to me: the long-haired, less matty one was clean and fluffy, and my shorter-haired, tangly girl got the lion cut. I remember being annoyed that their ears weren't even touched, as that was part of the package. I also remember the lion cut looking patchy, with obvious shave marks. Again, I didn't know any better, so I assumed that that was what it was supposed to look like. I was happy to find Soft Paws right around the corner from my apartment, and set up an appointment. A few hours later, the cats looked fantastic. The owner obviously takes pride in what he does, and he spent a good amount of time making sure they looked perfect. I took my Maine Coon to Soft Paws after I couldn't get an appointment with my regular groomer and I am so glad I did. He bathed her and gave her the best lion cut she has had. The cut is short but with no tell-tale razor marks and she still smells good two weeks later! So happy I found Carlos. The only problem is the owner isn't so good with estimating the time to be done. He told me it would be done around 2-3pm but I always end up not being able to pick up my cat until 5. We brought out newly adopted 1 year old norfolk terrier to Carlos and our experience was amazing and each time we went back it was consistently amazing. Carlos puts a lot of time and effort into grooming the dogs and making sure he does a good job even if it means that he has to work from morning to night. It may take a long time depending on the amount of dogs he has, but it is sure worth the wait if it does take him awhile. Was not happy with the treatment of my dog as she was cut by a scissors and I was not told about it. My dog developed a bad infection and almost died. I had to get a vet to come to my home to treat her. I have heard other problems from numerous people about the careless treatment in grooming that almost killed their dogs too. I will never return! Carlos takes too many dogs at a time to treat them properly. After being a client for years, I was disappointed that he did not let me know that she was cut and I amost lost her!! read more

Carlos is truly amazing. My Persian cat gets too hot with a long coat in the summer and she has some skin issues with hot spots and dermatitis. I brought her to Soft Paws to have her get the Lions Cut and even though I think she looks silly, she feels much better. She's more playful and running around rather than sitting in front of the fan all day. She smells incredible and she's silky soft. Carlos at Soft Paws is absolutly the best!!! I have been bringing my pomeranian, "Dozer" for quite a few years now. I like to keep his hair short for a Pomeranian so I am there quite often. Carlos at Soft Paws has been our cat's stylist for a couple years now and we are so lucky to live close to such a talented and gentle groomer. We have a flame point Himalayan cat and he is absolutely beautiful. His hair is stunning, but it gets out of hand. It grows so long and gets tangled and matted and it becomes difficult for him to maintain it and it is clearly uncomfortable for him. I was terrified to take my cat to get his hair cut because my husband and I had tried doing it ourselves and it seemed impossible, and our cat doesn't exactly leave the house very often!
