This business is a god send. We were watching my parents dog for the week and he was overdue for grooming as he had a very bad dog smell from his daily swimming at the park. The smell lingered in both my car and my apartment and I desperately needed a groomer last minute. I probably called around 30 different businesses and either just got voicemails or unprofessional/rude people over the phone when asking about cancellations. When I called Doggone-it they were polite and friendly and we happily ready to take us last minute for the next day. Inside the area is very well kept aside from the grooming area of course with all the fur but you could see the grooming area when you walked in and from the outside. You could easily see the up-to-date tools and equipment they used that also appeared well kept. When we got my parents dog back he smelled so much better and was clearly very happy to have been there. Additionally, they gave him a cute little bandanna as part of the grooming which I loved. We've been taking our labradoodle here for many years but the service has really gone down hill. Once he came home limping and limped for a week, we take him first thing asking him to be seen first as he's nervous and yet he can often be there for over 4 hours. Lately, they've cancelled serveral appointments and then it is impossible to get him a replacement appointment. My impression is that they are optimizing profit over the care and safety of the pets. read more

I called them on a whim to see if they could give my mini golden retriever puppy a bath, ear, and sanitary trim...she also needed her nails and glands done. I was desperate as she had not had a bath since she was spayed last month and I couldn't stand how she smelled like doggie daycare. The receptionist was so amazingly welcoming and flexible. She said she was able to take us the same day. I was floored. I basically said I could drop everything be there in 15 minutes (that's how bad I wanted my girl cleaned up). I did my due diligence and let them know things she doesn't care for. I loved that I didn't have to wait there, that I could get some errands done (super helpful). When I picked her up, they said she was an angel and did great! Yes there were a lot of dogs there, but they were all being attended to. My dog plays well and is social so this was not an issue for us. They had plenty of staff to attend to the dogs being groomed....dogs being dried....and the ones waiting to be picked up. Cannot say enough nice things about our experience here! We will be back. read more

This owner doesn't care about keeping loyal customers and didn't even have the decency to talk to me about my concerns before telling me not to come back. I have been bringing my dog here for over a year and loved this place, recommending it to others frequently. Today was an anomaly but apparently I'm not welcome back after I complained and asked for the grooming to be comp'd. I dropped my dog off at 9am and told them my dog had been given anti-anxiety meds because they usually try to get to him before the meds wear off. This time, five hours later and I still haven't heard from them. I call a few times and can't get through. I stop by at 3pm and they said they would get to him soon. At 5pm still no word. They are closing at 5:30 so I call. They said it would be another hour and explained the day was busy because the snow storm closure the day before pushed appointments to today. At this point I'm upset because a) that's just not right, they should honor today's appts and b) they could have said something at drop-off and I would have simply rebooked. Mind you today is Valentine's Day. I had paid for a sitter and had dinner reservations. I had to cancel my reservations and still had to pay the sitter given the late notice. Dog is finally ready at 6:30 and I try to talk to the owner about how disappointed I am in the total lack of communication and the impact it had on my whole day's schedule, not to mention my poor dog has been there 9 hours at this point. The owner (conveyed through the groomer) she would only comp 50% of the $130 bill. When I asked to speak with her directly the owner refused to come out but told the groomer to say I could walk away with the bill comp'd 100% but to not book here again. I was floored. This establishment was in the wrong, caused me considerable disruption and undue stress having ruined my Valentine's Day plans (not to mention the anxiety my dog went through not having eaten all day either) and they told me to never come back if I wanted a full refund? Honestly, at this point, good riddance. It's a shame that customers are so disposable to Desiree. They do good work, but a business should understand how small the community really is and how quickly their reputation can corrode when they take their customers for granted and treat them like garbage. read more

My family has been bringing our dogs to Jill for well over 20 years - each of the 7 dogs (over the 20 years) have ALWAYS been treated like they were part of Jill's own family. One of our current dogs is afraid of everything - really dislikes being groomed and especially having anyone near her face or nails. After just one time with Jill and Hillary she is HAPPY to walk through to the back and be groomed. Our other current dog is 16 1/2. She of course has some special needs (blind and deaf). Jill works with us to ensure she is able to be groomed - knows exactly what she can tolerate - the older dog loves Jill so much that she sits next to Jill for the entire time she is at Doggone-It. I am truly shocked at some of the reviews on this page. As an overly cautious dog owner I would notice the smallest issue after grooming- I've found NONE. There are always a lot of Dogs at the establishment. I am certain Jill knows each of their names- knows the nuances of each ones personality and does whatever possible to not only make each look as cute/beautiful as possible - but also is as happy and content as possible during the grooming process. read more

The place felt a bit like a factory. We asked specifically for unscented shampoo. Whatever product they used on our puppy was definitely lightly scented and caused my eyes to feel irritated for about 3 days until the scent started to fade. I called three times in the following 10 days to talk to the owner. It took her 17 days to return my call and when she did all she had to say was that the product they use is hypoallergenic and that she was sorry. Our sweet and very active puppy acted withdrawn all day after we picked him up at noon. This was our puppy's first visit to a groomer it will be our last at Doggone it.. read more

We liked the Needham location of Doggone It for both haircut and play, but it's closed recently, so we went to the Newton Commonwealth Ave location to give our golden doodle a haircut in the end of April. I must say the cut is mediocre and disappointing, especially the belly / chest area. The cut is not only uneven but also there are cuts his skin in the belly area. He has scabs - a few pictures here. It's amazing that the groomer didn't tell us anything about the injury (even if it's an accident). We like the friendly staff, especially the store owner who graciously agreed to transfer the Needham store balance to Newton store. It's hard for us to recommend the Newton store to others, not going there again (one injury is more than enough!) read more

I read a lot of good reviews about this place, was excited to take my pup to new groomer... we'd let her hair go a bit, the dog is still loved and cared for but you'd never know given the barrage from staff at the counter expressed to my girlfriend when we dropped the dog off...however we felt we'd probably let her hair go a little too long and just blew it off. Next time was ok.... dropped her off today for a trim, not only, upon inspection later was the cut not what I asked for, they gave me someone elses dog to leave with.. Beware of this place. After visiting this salon my poor dog doesn't allow me to touch her hair or around her ears area. Also she was lethargic for the entire day after her grooming visit. It is true what other people say that it is a pure factory and there zero interest to cater to the interest of each individual dog. While waiting to pick up my dog I heard many dogs crying inside. I looked around and saw at least 20 dogs around ... the person behind the desk boasted they "DO" over 50 dogs per day. 50 dogs per day!! Seriously !! I don't want to put my poor little baby through a sweatshop. On the top of a hefty fee (they are above average in terms of price) they have an expertly unfriendly cancellation policy. I mean they charge you25$ if you need to reschedule. With doing over 50 dogs per day they need to be a bit more flexible. read more

Last Tuesday my Goldendoodle was groomed terribly here. She came home with a gauge down to her bare skin on one side, a chest that was cut down to her skin, ears cut in a lopsided manner, and overall looked awful. The groomers here are both caring and kind people. My husband asked if Ollie can come in for a groom. They were booked for Saturday. Ollie had been in daycare all week and needed a good grooming. I was admitted to the hospital for what we thought was a week, only to find out it's for a month. Stressful situation to say the least. Love Jill, the owner. She does a terrific job and tries hard to manage her groomers, who may not always be the friendliest of sorts. They still get the job done sufficiently and will listen to any special needs or requests your dog may have. And yes, they'll even do anal glands without complaining! This alone is worth the price of the groom if you've ever had to handle this messy, stinky, disgusting problem yourself. No dog loves going to the groomer. Dirty dog comes out shiny and clean, and that's enough for me. You're not bringing him there for day care! read more

I have two smaller dogs: Cocker /King Charles Mix & Shitzu/Maltese Mix --- Brought them here bc my old groomer was not trimming the cockers ears well -- anyhow they do a great job on both dogs! .... well priced and nice .... I recently brought my 14 year-old Bouvier, Mumbo, to the Newton location for a full grooming. We recently moved from LA, where we had been living for most of Mumbo's life. We were very nervous taking our beloved boy to a new place...not only because he is a senior dog, but allso because the styling he had been receiving his entire life was top notch! Our groomer at Doggone-It was Jill...who not only took the time to isten to Mumbo's list of ailments and special needs, but also made him feel instantly loved and comfortable!!! When we picked him up a few hours later (they got him In and out quickly due to his age) we were ECSTATIC! Mumbo came out looking like a million bucks! He smelled delicious and was walking with an extra spring in his step...we knew he felt great too!! I can not say enough great things about Jill, and the rest of our experience. The price was comparable to California...which I guess is a little pricier than some areas, but worth every last cent. Did a great job on my Coton. The best part is my dog comes out looking like he had the greatest time of his life, and wiggles his little butt every time he meets his groomer. Past experience was with Petsmart and my dog would always come out with a red rash near his private area like they shaved it too close. Doggone it in Newton is definitely worth it. read more

Jill and her team are amazing! They are all so nice, caring, and kind to my dog. They are also very accommodating to my schedule. In addition to feeling welcomed, the shop is always immaculate! When I bring my girl in, she is treated like a queen. My dog has a tough coat and Jill takes her time to make sure it's looking perfect and that my dog is comfortable the whole time. My dog feels totally safe and comfortable there. I really love how the dogs aren't crated while they are there. They are free to roam the "floor" while waiting their turn. However I do notice a few leash hook ups for dogs that might not like this freedom. I recommend Doggone It 100% and would never go anywhere else! read more

The first time I brought my dog here, they did a great job. She was a little puppy and terrified at first. But I stayed there and waited for her, and she was fine. My dog was well-behaved. The groomer was caring and patient. She did a wonderful job. The second time, the lady in charge insisted I leave my dog there and go, which I did, reluctantly. When I came back, my dog's hair cut was awful: It was patchy and uneven; her abdomen had not been properly shaved, as I had asked, neither were her genitals. Their explanation was that she had been 'restless and skittish'. I had to have them take her back inside to, at least, do her abdomen and butt area. The third time, I called ahead for an appointment, the earliest in the day that they had. They gave me an appointment for 5 days later, which was fine. The day of, I brought my puppy in and said I wanted to wait for her while she had her cut, so that my she wouldn't get upset about being left behind (like last time). The woman in charge would have none of it! First she said that the groomer my puppy was scheduled with, had 2 cats and 2 dogs ahead of her and it would be a while. Can someone tell me what the point of having an appointment is, if they have a first-come-first-serve policy (which, they never told me about)?! I told the lady in charge that if she could give me an approximate time when the groomer would be ready to take my dog in, she said there was no way of telling-- and not in a polite manner, either! I said I didn't mind waiting. Then she said, my being there would be upsetting to the other dogs!!! Really?!!! Just to be clear, the bench where I sat, could not be seen by any of the dogs. Meanwhile there were 2 dogs that were being worked on in the back, where I could hear them yelping and crying. My dog started shivering uncontrollably at the sounds of those poor dogs. A few of the people who work there are kind and affectionate to the dogs, but this place works like a factory - make no mistake - hence, the mediocre cut! If a manager/owner doesn't want you there that's a HUGE red flag. I won't be coming back. read more

Relocated and in search for a new groomer for my two beloved poms. Did some research on yelp have driven by the place so I decided to give it a try. I looked up their website and they do nail trims on a walk in basis. I thought this was a great way to check the place out and test without a full groom. I called in advance to make sure. My pets also needed some ear cleaning so I asked if this could be done as well. The lady said no problem which was great. They were very nice when we got there and they took care of my poms in a quickness without an appointment. They have a good selection of buddy biscuits which are my dogs favorite. And not overpriced. So for a quick nail trim on a walk in its a great place. read more

I am currently fostering a Wheaten Terrier who was a puppy mill dog. Basically locked in a kennel for 5 years and just used for breeding. She has some issues and one is she is terrified of other dogs. Since Jill groomed my other wheaten I called her and explained Rainee's special needs. Jill just told me to bring her in and she would take care of it. I am so thankful, not only did Jill do a fabulous job and Rainee looks so cute, Jill got her in and out with no issues for Rainee. Love this place! The women working there when I went in were SO friendly. My dog accidentally stole a rawhide bone on the way out and they told me to go ahead and keep it. My dog came out smelling AMAZING. He also had an anal gland expression, which alleviated all the discomfort he had prior to Doggone It's care. I'll definitely be back here! read more
