I had the pleasure of assisting Kelly at her shop from the Fall of 2022 until the Spring of 2023. When I say I have never met anyone else who works as hard as Kelly, or who puts as much heart into their craft as she does, I mean it. She truly cares about her clientele and they sure do love her back! Seeing how the dogs would light up with joy and wagging tails as they were dropped off for their grooming with Kelly really warmed my heart. It was such a great experience working with her. She now has another groomer, Amanda, in the shop who has been doing exceptional work and has many years experience. Ask about her Bichon Frisé cuts! Staff is very friendly, and I appreciated that they got me in the next day. However, I waited two weeks to hear back from anyone regarding an appointment- totally fine to be on vacation, but maybe put this on a voicemail. Dropped my dog off expecting nail trim, ear cleaning, bath. $70 for my 28 pound dog, but okay. When they called me to pick her up I was in a bit of a rush, but noticed when I got home that her ears weren't clean, and halfway through the week I realized her nails were not at all trimmed. Possible they could have fully grown out in 3 days, but seems unlikely considering we typically trim them once a month. She was bathed, but I would never again pay $70 for a bath. So don't be like me and not check your dog before you leave to ensure they actually did their job... frustrating and a waste of $70. read more

Kelly's compassion and patience is something we all could strive for. Besides being a fantastic groomer, she is know for taking the sweetest pics. I love that the dogs aren't waiting in crates for hours waiting for there turn. The dogs hang out or play in the greeting room until it's their turn. The Queen of Doodles!! I've been taking my dog to Kelly every 6 weeks for 6 years. There is no one I trust more to not only take care of my dog but make him look his best. She is so caring and kind and a perfectionist when it comes to her cuts. I often get stopped by people asking where I take my dog to be groomed because he looks that good. Her prices are beyond fair for the time and care she puts in to making all dogs look their best. When your dog literally PULLS you into Kelly's shop as you are close, you know you have found your groomer. My (big 88lb yellow lab) baby adores her and she adores him! He used to absolutely hate getting his nails cut anywhere else (barking and crying), but now I think he just wants to go flirt with Kelly and also get a big soapy rubdown. He is a very good and calm boy for her. I used to have to chase him to wash him or spread peanut butter on the bathtub. It would just end up a wet mess. Kelly truly loves the animals she grooms and my big boy comes home fluffy and smelling so handsome! She has the magic touch, probably because it is not just a job for her. She cares about our babies! I also think it is social hour for him! He walks out of there feeling like the cats meow! read more

Googlemaps location is incorrect -location is a vacant storefront. If "Kelly" calls you to interview you, do not tell her you have a small thick-coated dog. She will schedule you for an "appointment" on a Monday and ghost you. I don't believe any of these reviews. I've been taking my 50 pound goldendoodle since he was a puppy and I always know what to expect when I pick him up - clean, smelling good, and super adorable. She loves dogs and my dog loves her. read more

-Place is dingy and run down with no signs -Took 6 hours -Uneven cuts on ears and face -Puppy's face was cut in a way that she now has a permanent sad face -Instead of just shearing off the mats on her chest (~3 total), groomer just shaved her entire chest about an inch lower than the rest of her body so she just looks so uneven and awkward -When I went in, they were still working on her (6 hr mark). Puppy saw me coming in and started crying. I tried to reassure her by saying "it's okay", to which the groomer said "stop talking". I understand that it's hard for them to finish their job when the dogs find out their owners came back but it was just plain rude how she said it. -Total: $75 read more

I cannot stress enough how happy I am with the grooming done on my 7 month old goldendoodle. My poor doodle was terribly matted down to the point where I was worried about hurting him if I continued my attempt to cut out his mats- I knew I needed professional help and I was so sad. Kelly and Rebecca saved my doodles fur. Yes, he was shorter than we all had hoped but he was not shaved down to the skin as I had feared he would have to be. They told me how shaving is always their last option and they don't want to do it as much as I don't want them doing it. They did shave the few problem spots where the mats were extremely bad but they were able to save more of his coat than I had thought. It means SO MUCH to me as I know shaving the whole thing would've been easier for them. They instead took the time to keep the parts of him long that they could even though it was more time consuming and difficult. It is so hard to get customer service like that these days. They not only listened to my concerns, they validated my feelings instead of telling me that they know better. On top of me being pleased with the cut, my dog LOVED being there. He has a hard time separating from me but walked right in without a glance back. It's more like a dog park the way all the dogs have a play area to hang in, and at pick up he was all tag-wags and goofy smiles. You cannot put a price on your dogs happiness and comfort in such a place. At pick up I could tell he felt lighter and happier and that is worth the extra hair that had to be cut. LAZY! If you want to spend $100 to get your dog shaved, save yourself $70 and buy a $30 shaving kit off amazon and do it yourself. They claimed my dog was matted and the only way was to shave him down. I told them to stop what they were doing and I would pick him up and take him elsewhere. In response they said "ok, we can cut his hair then". I called their bluff. I picked him up, he looked ok, but when I got home I found 4 scabs where they cut him, one was the size of a quarter. I've been taking him to Dewberry since, where it is (slightly) cheaper but my dog returns happy, cut-free, and he looks better. read more

I've gone there twice now, and I'm probably going back. The price is reasonable, the area is convenient, it's just a block from the prudential T stop. The most important thing is that Kelly is really nice and great with dogs. I became really concerned about the treatment of dogs by groomers when a good friend mine walked in to a pretty exclusive dog salon and saw the groomer throw a little dog into the sink hard enough to make him cry out (I know exclusive dog salon is a funny term, but this is a place that was so busy they weren't accepting new dogs and when they did you have to know someone who was already going there, so I don't know how else to describe it). After that I've been pretty skeptical about groomers, but I trust Kelly. She's very friendly and she seems to really care about dogs. When I arrived for my first appointment, she was looking at dog with severely matted fur, and the owner was asking her to comb it out. She tried to talk the owner out of it because she thought the hair was too matted. The owner left, presumably to find someone who was willing to comb out her dog. When Kelly talked about how much pain the dog would be in, having all those knots combed out, I swear it looked like she was going to cry. That's one of the things that makes me trust Kelly, she seems to really care about the dogs. The other thing is that she keeps the dogs in a room together and you can watch her interacting with them. Also, the whole store front is glass, so you can watch her grooming the dogs. She does a pretty good job. I ask for an unusual haircut for my dog. It's very similar to the pony cut given to the powder-puff Chinese crested, to imitate the look of the hairless Chinese crested. She does a great job on the feet and the tail. It's just right. The second time, hoping to get the face cut better, I brought a picture. She did a great job of copying the cut from the picture and it looks pretty good. My only complaint is that she doesn't blow-dry his hair out completely. I can tell because some of his hair ends up looking a little crinkly instead of straight. Because it's not all straight when it's cut, the cut comes out a little bit uneven, making him look a bit disheveled. Anyway, that's just the perfectionist in me complaining. Everyone who sees him always wants to know where I get him cut and a month later people still ask if I just got him groomed. I'm not positive that I'll keep going there, but I probably will. She does a close-to-perfect job and she's great with dogs. read more

My 7 month old Coton de Tulear was shaven beyond recognition for no good reason! When Kelly handed me my dog, I thought she was mistakenly giving me another dog, until I realized it really was my dog. New to the area, I called her because my dog's puppy coat was growing out and needed shaping. The groomer said she had 20 years experience with this breed's fur and knew what to do. CLEARLY NOT! This place is great! Its RIGHT in the middle of the city, so I can easily walk there, BUT I did not pay the price for being in the middle of the city. Our cute little lassapo got a intense cut and toe nail trimming here for $35 as opposed to the $90 we were paying other places! You can tell Kelly LOVE dogs. She recently bought the place is is there everyday grooming them :) After every cut, your dog/puppy gets a cute season themed bandana tired around their neck. These are not cheap fabrics swatches! Look closely to see they are sewn on all edges. The deal is, Kelly picks out new fabrics each season, pumpkins and ghosts for Halloween, flowers for the spring etc. and then her mom takes the time to stitch them up! My Josie HATES bathing, but this is the best place she could go, its all done with LOVE! read more

Great groomer. Excellent price. We bring our 1 year old pomeranian to her for her nice lion cut. We come in from Charlestown to drop her off and then pick her up when we get the phone call. Like that dogs are not kept in cages or crates unless they have to be. Otherwise they just play out in the open. Very convenient location. At the end of the block is the Prudential Center so we get to get our shopping groove on while we wait. I highly recommend. Make your reservations as she fills up quickly. Bailey and I love Kelly's Underground. I am pretty picky when it comes to Bailey's hair. I prefer him to have a longer and shaggy look. He just looks a whole lot cuter when he is a little long, curly, and disheveled. After a not so great experience at another groomer, I started looking for someone new. I found Kelly on here and after reading about her on her website I decided to give her a try. So far she has groomed Bailey twice. She does a good job on him, and both times she has actually kept him at the length I want (if not a little longer to be on the safe side) instead of just shaving him down (which is my biggest fear when trying a new groomer). I don't think any haircut can make me 100% happy at first because I need time to adjust to Bailey's new shorter look after his very grown our hair is cut, but she makes me as happy as a groomer can. Baileys opinion: He loves it. My boyfriend dropped him off the first time we got him groomed and I dropped him off the second. He immediately ran downstairs running around looking for the other dogs (he was the first one there so there weren't any though). Bailey is the type of dog that thinks every dog is God's gift to him, so a place where he can get groomed and actually play and interact with other dogs in between getting groomed and not be in a cage is a wonderful thing to him. I can tell when I pick him up that he is a happy dog. It's almost like you are getting a grooming and a day of doggy day care. Overall, Kelly is great with both people and dogs. Its obvious that the dogs love her and enjoy their time spent, she takes the time to talk to owners when they drop off their to really listen about what they want done, and she does a good job. read more

We have taken our dog to get groomed many times, and he always came out looking scared and couldn't wait to get back home...until we went to Kelly's. He loves it there! He doesn't even want to leave! Kelly lets the dogs run around in a little open area and play with each other. So our dog comes home freshly groomed and tired from playing all day! And when people write that Kelly loves the dogs it is true! She really does! She is defnately a trustworthy person to leave your dog with. As for the grooming, she does a good job, but not perfect. But with all the other good things about Kelly's you don't even mind if a few hairs aren't perfect! We will take our dog here as long as we live in the city for sure! read more

I've been bringing my two dogs to Kelly's for over 10 years now and each time they come home happy. Since Kelly doesn't cage the dogs, it's a great chance for them to get socialized and play with the other dogs, big and small. I took my 1 year old Yorkie in for her first professional grooming and I was shocked at how great she looked when I picked her up. The price is reasonable and Kelly is terrific. Kelly's has made a regular customer of me. I've recently moved to Boston and have been looking for a dog groomer I can trust to make my two guys look great (I have a maltipoo and a shih tzu). I went to Kelly's on the recommendation of a friend and was very satisfied. The staff was very friendly and you can tell they are real dog lovers. They took the time to listen to what I wanted, as well as the behavioral quirks of my dogs to watch out for. I was able to drop them off in the morning and they were all done when promised. As an added bonus, Kelly's is close to the Green Line, so getting there by T is easy. read more

Brought my Miniature Schnauzer here about a month and a half ago for a major groom -- he had some nasty matting and was just overdue in every way possible. Booking; I made my appointment about a week in advance. I initially used the email form on the website, and Kelly responded in about a day, which was great. I explained to her the situation my dog was in, and she e-mailed back asking to call so we could discuss him. Even though she had been out of town and was backlogged on making new appointments, she was helpful and listened to my needs/wants for my dog. Getting there: It's a short walk from either the Mass Ave Orange line stop, the #1 Bus stop (Columbus/Mass Ave corner), and Back Bay Station. There is also street parking, but i just put my hazards on to drop my dog off. The store is on the basement level, underneath a laundromat. The Store: Kelly had me (and the other dog owners for the day) drop my dog off in the morning and pick him up later in the day. She scheduled the pick up times so she had time to work on each dog throughout the day. Because my dog was looking some type of way, i didn't mind that she had my dog for most of the day, I would rather have someone do a good job and take a bit longer, than rush it and botch the clip. The dogs were free to run around and play with each other in the big main room, which is awesome. There is also a glass window in the counter, so you can see your pup when you walk in, and plenty of toys for the dogs to play with. The Groom! Given that my dog was a hot mess when I dropped him off, Kelly worked a miracle. I don't like the standard schnauzer cut, which was part of the reason he wound up a mess. Too much long and flowy hair , plus a busy work schedule, equals crazy looking dog. I asked Kelly to clip him short, but keep a bit of a beard, which is exactly what she did. The price was what she originally quoted, which is a bit less than other places in the area. She also gave him a little bandana, which was a nice touch. All in all, I was very satisfied with my experience, Kelly was great and there were no bad surprises (which has happened to me more than once with dog grooming!). My dog was VERY happy when I picked him up, and I am definitely bringing him back. read more

No, Lynda S, you can't comment on the quality of the grooming. If you have an issue with your dog being at the groomer all day, then don't take your dog to Kelly's. Shame because you - and your dog - will be missing out on great grooming, great customer service, and the friendliest, most welcoming groomer in Boston. Kelly's is excellent. My dog is not the most socially inclined, and he doesn't necessarily love being around other dogs. But when I pick him up after being groomed, he's as happy as can be - and he looks great because of the excellent job Kelly does. If you're the sort of person who feeds your dog filet mignon, go someplace else where they'll coo and simper and laugh at you the second you leave. With Kelly what you see is what you get - honest-to-goodness service from someone who clearly loves what she does. read more

Hands down -- I looooooove Kelly's! I'm about the laziest person in the world so if I actually took the time to write a review, it should go to show how much I love this groomer for my lhasa apso, Frankenstein. He loves it there! Always has such a great time, so much so, he paws at the door to get inside when we get there. She does an amazing job with his fur -- always does what we ask and he turns out looking great every time. We've been taking Frank here for close to a year now, after trying a few duds first. I love that he is able to run around and play, she takes her time with him and he is never overwhelmed. You can always tell when a person is trully a dog-lover and Kelly is. She always gets down to Franks level and gives him the loving he demands when he gets there. I think the fact that she loves dogs so much reflects in the work that she does. I would recommend this place to any dog owner. I cant express how happy frank is going here and I am with the cut and loving he receives. Finally, for the naysayers below -- I will say that, if you had actually gone and seen the location, you would see how cleanly, well kept and cared for all of the dogs are. read more

I have always cut my Yorkie's hair myself, keeping it long on the sides and medium on the face. I decided that I wanted it short all over so I took him to Kelly. I couldn't be happier with the cut. She did a GREAT job with very little direction from me. He came home looking and smelling great. Also, my little guy is a bit of a jerk when he meets new dogs, so I was a little hesitant about her policy of letting her clients have the run of the place. When I arrived, Kelly took him into her arms and introduced him to the other dogs there (including some very big dogs) and he seemed quite comfortable. It turned into a play day for him and he got some good socialization as well as a great haircut. Kelly is awesome. Very pleasant to do business with. It took a couple days to get an appointment, but I guess that's just because she is so good that she is all booked up. I will definitely go to Kelly again and I highly recommend her. read more

We took our puppy "Popo" to Kelly for her first cut. We're both a bit worried since Popo's really shy, but Kelly was amazing with Popo and 4 other dogs that were there. When we picked her up after 2hrs, Popo was very happy hanging around Kelly's place...AMAZING!! Kelly did a GREAT job of making her look so adorable and smelling great too! Couldn't be happier with the cut. It's been a week already.. and Popo still smells good!! It's weird, but Popo seem to be much more outgoing after her grooming experience at Kelly's. My husband and I took our mini poodle, Benji, to Kelly's Underground salon today for the first time. Benji is shy and very scared of water and blow dryers. Therefore, when we found out that the salon in Brooklyn, NY, where we always take him, was devastated by Hurricane Sandy, we needed to find a local groomer. I left a voicemail and received a phone call that day from Kelly. I expressed my concerns with Benji's fears of grooming. Kelly was very understanding and as accommodating as possible. Kelly and the other groomer did a very nice job with his cut and taking out the matts that formed due to an overdue haircut. Benji was quite anxious at first but seemed to calm down by the time we came to pick him up. We will bring him back for a second haircut soon! read more

I have an older mini pinscher mix, Ruby, who I rescued less than two years ago. Being a little short-haired dog, I can just toss her in the shower and clip her nails down, but I figured it couldn't hurt to have her professionally groomed every so often. This was my first time here, and I was a little disappointed that I couldn't wait there or stay and watch. They are definitely animal lovers over at Kelly's Underground Dog Grooming. I really liked that there aren't kennels and cages that the animals are held in. My pup is a little quirky, being an older rescue, and gets nervous when she's dropped off somewhere new. Kelly said she held her for a bit (Ruby's favorite!) but obviously couldn't the whole time, so she was a big barky and distressed. The system seems to work for them- pups hang around for a few hours, play with each other, and get picked up in the afternoon, but I would have liked to have the option to bring her in for the groom and stayed local til she was done. She came back smelling lovely and wearing a sweet little bandana. They did a wonderful job of deshedding her... her coat is deceptive! She has black nails which were really long when I adopted her. Since then, I've been able to trim them down, but really wanted someone to file them with a dremel to get them a bit shorter. Unfortunately, they let me know that they didn't use the dremel, and I didn't find her nails to be much shorter than they were when I brought her in. Fair enough- she probably has a long quick. I was also hoping some of the feathering on her back legs or extra hair on her paws would be trimmed, but they must have thought she looked fine. This will probably be a once a year occasion, just for maintenance. Her groom cost $45, and since she came out looking relatively the same, I probably won't make it a regular appointment. I really liked Kelly, though, and would definitely consider returning in the even that Ruby needs another groom. I have a feeling that if I was a little more specific and asked more questions they could accommodate. read more

Great service. Super easy to get to from the T- a must for me since I hate driving. I emailed Kelly in a moment of desperation the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. If my dog was going to be around a bunch of friends and family, he had to have his nails trimmed and I was so worried I'd never get an appointment anywhere. Kelly emailed me back right away, was able to fit me in the next day, and my dog (a chihuahua who really hates getting his nails clipped) just loved her. You can tell she really loves dogs. Unlike other places, she was in no rush to just cut his nails and get him out the door. She took her time with him, introduced him to the other dogs, and talked to me for a while after she was done. She even told me that since he's so friendly that I can drop him off there on a Saturday for a half hour or whatever to just hang out with the other dogs! The price was really reasonable, the other dogs there were having the time of their lives. I've never seen dogs so happy to be at a groomer's (and I used to work at a doggie day care) I'll be going back once a month now to keep his nails trimmed, and will probably spring for a full grooming too. read more

If your dog is afraid to get a bath then Kelly's is the place for you. My dog HATES getting a bath. He's a big mixed breed and adopted and he must have been traumatized with water by his previous owner. It breaks my heart that he's so afraid. But Kelly coos to him and talks to him in a way that really helps his anxiety. She makes the whole thing better than it would be anywhere else. She keeps the bath short and sweet and it helps that he doesn't need a lot of hair trimming. Thanks, Kelly! read more

This is in response to Lynda's review posted on 6/3. First of all, I AM Kelly's assistant aka, the other groomer. I urge everyone to also read the filtered comments, as they are real customers who had things (positive and negative) to say. Everyone's opinion needs to be heard. I am just fine with a review that is not so great if we gave the dog a cut that the owner wasn't thrilled about, it happens in the grooming world from time to time. But torture the animals?? Give me a break. Our business is a laid back, comfortable, POSITIVE place for our clients and their little furry family. People love bringing their fur babies to us because we don't put them in kennels all day and we treat them like family. Almost all dogs are accustomed to going a full work day without needing to go to the bathroom and most owners don't have the means to go home in the middle of the day- dogs are built differently than humans!! I am not going to deny that I stated that my dogs (yes woman, I have 2) stay at home while I'm at work. They get three long walks a day and are on a routine that they have been comfortable with for 5 years. I do not have to defend myself as a responsible, loving dog owner. Save your attacks for someone who actually abuses animals. Lynda, you have no place to judge me as animal caretaker. I was a vet assistant for two years and now am a full time animal trainer and part time dog groomer. Obviously, I care about the welfare of animals. You have never met Kelly or me, let alone stepped foot in our shop. Your statements are unfounded and ignorant. Furthermore, I have taken many older dogs and puppies out to use the bathroom when an owner asks us. We are extremely accommodating. I told Lynda on the phone that we could work out an early pick up time for her, but apparently she only heard what she wanted to. We offer the option of pick up time (when it is an appropriate length of time to groom the dog) or to call when your pup is done. Most owners ask us to keep their dog all day-it's free daycare! We do our best to work with our clients schedules. But when a stranger calls and expects a dog groomer to also be a dog walker, then states that we torture the dogs because we don't walk them regularly (and we are inhumane because we don't), accommodating goes out the window. We do not want or need business from this kind of a person. Kelly's tone was blasé because you are a ridiculous person and she was too busy beating dogs to listen. I don't need to write how amazing our place is. Our clients know. Come by and see the shop and meet Kelly and myself sometime to see. I was a client of Kelly's before I started working with her. She has a great work ethic and absolutely loves the dogs she grooms. I couldn't ask for a better boss or work place. read more

I was looking for a new groomer since the one that I went to previously was not that great aka Dewberry. Dewberry made my sweet Cockapoo look like a Schnauzer and did not listen to my instructions for my dog's hair. I made an appointment with Kelly and luckily her store in conveniently located by the Prudential T stop! I told Kelly that I wanted my Nala's haircut to be short as possible for the summer but still have the puppy like face and not as short as the body. When I came back several hours later to pick up my pup, she looked so freaking adorable. Nala seemed pretty happy with her haircut to with no nicks or cuts (she experienced this before with other groomers). The price is reasonable. I've lived in Chicago and NYC before and the price is comparable. I think no matter where you go, dog grooming prices in every city are similar. After quite a few visits to Kelly, I have to give up. It's difficult to coordinate with her schedule-- at my last visit, she insisted she needed my dog first thing in the morning, then kept him until nearly 5 pm. She can never tell you ahead of time when they'll be ready so you have to just wait around on her schedule. I have a teacup poodle who's pretty easy to handle, and each time I've taken him in, she ends up shaving him, claiming his hair was knotted, etc. My last visit cost me an arbitrary $90 for a simple shave, and I once waited nearly an hour for her on a winter morning and she never showed up with little to no explanation... As much as I'd rather give a shining review to a small business owner, I have to be honest and say I haven't been pleased with my experiences here. There are quite a few dog groomers in Boston and I'd recommend going elsewhere. read more

I can understand why kelly gets all these good reviews: she is a sweet person and the dogs love her. The big downside for me? She really does a horrible job grooming.I've tried her on three separate occasions with two dogs because I just loved the woman so much, the location was convenient and my dogs liked going there. I have heard from other groomers, that both of my dogs are gentle and patient when it comes to getting groomed. But every time they've gone to kelly's their cut was a mess! One time I asked for a wheaten cut and what I got was not a wheaten cut at all. In fact, my dog left Kelly's with a bowl cut and the body was disproportionate to her head.She looked like a starving stray nerd-dog. Kelly warned me by phone, all three times I used her, that she couldn't do what I asked her to do. But the thing is, I go to a dog groomer to get these things done because I can't do them myself. If the dog groomer can't cut the nails or shave the knot that has accumulated in my dog's nether-regions, then who is going to do it? I didn't go to grooming school. I'm paying her for her help in doing this stuff. My other dog also was groomed at Kelly's. she needed to be cut between her eyes. When I picked my dog up, the one thing I needed (a trim between her eyes), was not done. But I still had to pay. Its true kelly bathed the dog, but I do that at home for free. The third and final time I used kelly's, the groomer shaved my dog. She shaved my dog! Ew! My dog is not some stray who came in with scabies or whatever. . Why shave my dog? My dog is very thin with long and fluffy hair. If you shave her there is nothing left. When she left the groomers that day, she looked like a south park alien. She also had two abrasions on her leg and side from the shaving. Walking down the street with my dog that day and for the next three months, until my dog's fur grew out, my neighbors made jokes and I felt embarrassed. I paid 65 dollars for the pleasure of owning a dog who looked diseased. I understand that kelly is trying to make grooming fun for dogs. But to make grooming fun at the expense of the actual grooming really makes her services useless to me. read more
