I was very disappointed with the service at Pet Spa. I contacted them in advance to ask about their services and they quoted me $80-$100 for a full groom including a haircut. They took some information, but did not ask if it was her first time. As soon as we walked in, they asked if she had been groomed before and only then told us they likely wouldn't be able to do a full cut on her and it is best for puppies to have a intro groom (perhaps up to 4 intro grooms!). WHY WAS THIS NOT SAID IN ADVANCE!? For the "puppy spa day" they ended up doing, they charged $85 and she still came out with her full coat of hair. When I expressed my disappointment, the receptionist was condescending in the way she lectured me on how they didn't cut her coat out of her best interest and that she was anxious. If this is their practice, I don't understand why this couldn't have been said at the time of booking. We were desperate to get her a summer cut as she is a doodle and it was 80 degrees outside - glad we went elsewhere! I would not recommend this facility to anyone with a young or anxious dog. read more

We love Pet Spa!! My husband and I used to live right up the street from Pet Spa and were sad to have to find a new groomer when we moved to a different town. After finding absolutely NO good groomers near our new house we decided to go back to Pet Spa (40 + minute drive) because they just do THAT good of a job. Professional, friendly staff and they give our 70 lb 4 year old goldendoodle the most perfect haircut. Cannot rave enough about Pet Spa! The pet spa is easy to get into as a new client . They don't have a receptionist so every time I call I get the answering machine and a call back same day. I will not bring my dog a second time as I can see he was cut in some places and there are some bare patches in various areas where I am certain there was not matted hair. As well, his hair is uneven like when someone mows a lawn as missing spots. On pick up please realize that they will give you a pickup time and the dog will be ready then. For us, they took our phone number and said they would call to confirm when he is done and the time they gave us was stated as an estimate. An hour later after calling, and of course getting the answering machine, and then finally ringing the doorbell we learned that they did not call but our dog had been done. read more

The owner and woman that manage this grooming agency are horrendous terrible people. my groomer there was awesome as much as I enjoyed her grooming my sweet dog it angered the manager. not only did they refuse to rebook next appointment they called me later and threatened me! Ohh yeah they said they had video camera. They did not even have a receptionist when I dropped my baby off and refused to let me see and talk with the groomer. unbelievable and their are walls NO GLASS to see what is really going on there. so you are unable to see what is actually going on there. I could not see who was actually grooming my dog nor allowed talk to groomer. I asked who groomed my dog ? This angered these people. I paid what I was charged. tipped and out the door, plus harassing phone call. red flags all over. don't trust these people with your sweet pet. read more

Pet Spa is great! We've been taking our dog here for a while and he loves it and gets so excited every time we pull up to the building. Tahnia is our groomer and she does a wonderful job. Our dog always looks amazing when he leaves. I was hesitant the first time I brought him since the building doesn't look the nicest from the outside, but I definitely recommend! They have also been great with accommodating our last minute scheduling requests if there's a cancellation or a spot opens up. read more

I highly would recommend this salon for you fur babies! Megan was so nice and accommodating to my senior dog's needs. I tried taking him to Petsmart about two months ago and the experience was so frustrating and a waste of my time. After that fiasco, I called around to a few salons but due to the pandemic most places were only taking existing clients. When I called Pet Spa, I received a call within 24 hours and spoke with Megan who was very kind and understanding of my requests. She got his bath, nails cut, and trim within 2 hours. Inconsistent pricing. There's no pricing chart anywhere on their website. I called and was quoted $40 for bath + nail clipping for small dogs. This is a pretty standard pricing, not any cheaper or more expensive than other groomers I've been to, so I figured why not. Brought my 2 small dogs in and was charged $90 (so $45 per dog) for just the bath, no nails (b/c my dogs aren't cooperating, so I don't blame them for that). When I asked why I was charged more than the original quote even though only 1 of 2 of the quoted services was done, they shrugged and told me that actual pricing is a case-by-case basis despite original quote. No one has returned my call, and no one is answering. It's not just the schlep back and forth, paying for car service...it's not just waiting outside for A FULL HOUR...it's just: does anyone run or manage this business? How are they not returning calls and voicemails? How are they still not open at 1pm on a day they were supposed to open at 8am? We'd had 2 previous experiences here that were ok, but obviously, I cannot spend hours running around Somerville every day with a business that opens whenever someone decides to show up. On top of that, while they did clip his nails, you can hardly tell since his nails are still scratching the floor. Our neighbors went to this groomer in the past as well and had the SAME PROBLEMS. Snobby. Overpriced. Ridiculous. I was really excited to bring my cat in to get his hair shaved for the summer. He's so hot! I called to book the appointment and ask what was included. They said nail trim, ear cleaning, and "lions cut" for $55. Yikes! But whatever, he needs it so I booked it for a week later. I had a last minute out of town appointment so had a friend bring him in... And now, the only reason for one star is because the groomer called me with updates. She said that my cat was too freaked out to try and shave him or cut him at all. Bummer! Though, what cat DOES like to have that done? Don't they have ways of dealing with these things? I guess not. I asked her to please brush him out and wash him...something, anything to make taking him there not a waste of time. I find out the next day that it cost me $50. Are you kidding? $5 less than the cut? For what? Something that I could have done at home in 10 minutes, that's what! They didn't even bathe him! I called to discuss the fee and the groomer could care less about my concern or about keeping my business. "there's nothing I can do about it now". In fact, according to her she should have cost me $62 to brush him!! ARE YOU INSANE?! AND $67 for the lions cut. Snobby. Overpriced. Ridiculous. Save your money and bring your animals somewhere that cares about your pet and keeping your business. Or at least doesn't rip you off. read more

Terrible customer service!!!! I gave this place three chances, first time they didn't cut my dogs hair the way I asked them to. Charged me $60 which I paid, but I called them the next day to say I had to bring him back in as the job they did was not sufficient, they said ok then charged me another $20 to fix it. Next time they charged me $12 additional dollars because they said my dog was difficult and it took them a long time. Today the third (and last) time, someone on staff called out sick and they had my dog from 9-5. Eight hours, I called at 5 1/2 hours to get an eta- they couldn't give me one so I waited around all day for them. The woman said that he was so much easier than last time, yet still charged me the price they charged when they claimed he was difficult. No where does it say that they can arbitrarily raise prices if the dog is difficult to groom. Never bringing my dog here again. My dog came home with cuts and bruises! When we came to pick my dog up, he was shaky and nervous, and I discovered that he had cuts near his paws and around the joints on his leg -- they had shaved him completely, even though he wasn't matted and though we requested that they only give him a trim. When I called in to let them know to be more careful about not cutting the animals, the woman on the phone (she's usually the one behind the counter) accused me of "neglecting" my dog, which is why he was shaky and nervous. Probably one of my worst decisions as a pet parent was bringing my dog here. Never again. read more

This is a good place. Everyone is nice and clearly likes dogs. It's nice & local and nothing like Petco etc.. I, on the other hand am a horrible mother. I didn't realize that groomers clipped nails- and now my poor kitty has no nails which she learned the hard way trying to jump up on the couch- asshesliddowntothe floor sad face. We are permissive animal parents and let her usually grow her talons like that guy in the Guinness Book of World Records from 1986. nails like, Freddie Krueger but with a perm. We brought our beagle mix here for grooming recently. She'd been hitting the mud pit at the dog park on the regular and needed more than our usual torturous 20 minutes of home washing could accomplish. I called ahead to make an appointment- they had an opening the following day. Being a short haired dog she didn't need any "styling" just the standard wash, brush & nail trimming. The lady on the phone said prices vary but quotes me $35-45. Lesson of the day? Pets-are-pricy. Pet Spa is pretty convenient, located just on Somerville Avenue. No parking but it's not terribly hard to find something on the street. It looks a bit run down from the exterior and inside they seem to be going for pet boutique/bakery but it just feels barren with a couple leashes, toys and treats lining the walls. Grooming takes place in the back and from the looks of it they don't have caged areas, so dogs get to mingle while waiting their turns to be groomed. I like this in theory but wondered how well that worked if there was a particularly skittish pup on hand. Overall, it felt a bit shabby to me but nothing some pretty basic cosmetic upgrades to the retail space wouldn't fix. When I dropped Niki off the woman was friendly but I would have appreciated her taking a little more time to talk, as I had some questions about the service and also wanted to give her some pointers on our pup's personality around other dogs. She was professional but I felt a bit hurried. When we picked her up a few hours later she looked good- nice and clean, with newly trimmed nails. Decent job for the basic service, which ended up ringing in at $40 total. While my experience here was fine, if I called around and found pricing to be comparable at other local groomers there's not much that would draw me back. read more

I recently brought my long-haired cat to the Pet Spa for grooming. The space is on the small side, but bright and friendly, and the staff is very nice. The groomer did a great job on my kitty, who is not a fan of being brushed or having her nails clipped. I would give this place 5 stars, but I thought $65 for a small cat was a little steep when other places seem to be charging closer to $50. On the up side, I was able to get an appointment immediately. Other places I called couldn't get to my cat for at least a week. While I was there I saw about a dozen dogs either waiting to be groomed or to be picked up -- the dogs were allowed to socialize and play in a decent sized room, rather than sit in kennels, which I thought was nice. There were several kennels along the wall though, so I'd imagine you can request that your dog is kept in one if you prefer. read more

Robert and I brought Ruby here to get her nails trimmed today. Trimming a dog with dark nails scares the hell out of me because I've seen them get nipped down to far and I don't want to hurt the dog, so we brought her here. We walked out literally five minutes later, and $25 lighter, and with less of a click clack of dog nails on the tile. The shop is cute and sold lots of treats and toys, and the staff was really attentive and catered to the needs of my canine. I haven't written a review in awhile but I'm coming out of hibernation to say what a great experience we had at Pet Spa. I was a little worried about the prices after reading some of the reviews but we made an appointment anyway since it's been way too long. I also really liked the idea that the dogs weren't kept in cages (since our dog is never caged) and they could play a bit with the dogs. I was a little taken aback when the groomer said she'd call when she was done... about 3-4 hours. But I'm not sure if she was just estimating high because they called an hour and a half later I came to pick up my dog... And PROMPTLY realized what a terrible job I'd been doing with the clippers. My dog looked better than she has in months, poor girl. Let me also note that she's a mix breed (ahem, mutt) so there's no breed standard they can match her up to but I can honestly say they had her looking her best. It cost around $60 (I can't remember exactly though $57 is floating around my head) which is only a little higher than my Mom pays for her dog (also around 55 pounds so the same size as mine) outside of Albany so $60 outside Boston seems pretty fair to me. We'll definitely be returning here and this time before our dog gets all Howard Hughes in the nails. read more

We love Pet Spa! I've taken my dogs in for grooming and for nail trims. One of my dogs is a bit of a drama queen with nail trims, but all of the ladies we've seen have been incredibly nice about it and have bent over backwards to try different setups and determine the most effective way to get the job done. My dog is slowly starting to adjust to these regular trips, which is good for her and good for our floors. They also do a good job with grooming. If you don't want a standard breed cut, they will listen to what you ask for and will deliver on that. With their most recent groom, I had waited far too long to take the dogs in because of the particularly cold, snowy winter we had this year. As a result, they were starting to look kind of ridiculous, with fur of many different lengths where I had cut out individual mats on my own. Pet Spa got their fur to a uniform length - without shaving off all their fur entirely - and the dogs are back to looking like their usual adorable selves. The first groomer we tried after moving to the area offered pickup service and had a stay-and-play setup where all the dogs could run around in her back yard for the rest of the day after finishing their groom. It sounded like a great idea, but my dogs were visibly upset when they got home. When I pick my dogs up from Pet Spa, my dogs are happy to see me and are ready to go home (it's basically the dog equivalent of the dentist, after all), but they are still their usual happy-go-lucky selves afterward. I love this place!! The prices are a little bit on the high side but they always do a great job on my dogs (2 Yorkie) -- the best hair cuts they have ever gotten. I like that they do not keep the dogs in kennels (like PetCo or PetSmart)when they aren't being groomed. The dogs are allowed to socialize and play with the other waiting dogs. The groomers are very nice as well. There was one time when I only had the one Yorkie and I had to come pick him up late in the day. All of the other dogs had been picked up already so instead of keeping my dog in the other room by himself Alison, the groomer, brought him out front with her and played with him until I came to pick him up. I am proud to support this small local business! I have been a customer of Pet Spa for about 7 years. I ABSOLUTELY adore working with them. They are always professional, accommodating, and a pleasure to work with. They are convenient to get to, and I've never had difficulty finding parking at a meter right next to their shop. They have always done an outstanding job with my dogs (Silky Terrier & Bichon Frise). I consider the price to be very reasonable: shampoo, conditioning, nail trim, and teeth brushing $45/each. I usually take my dogs in every 3-6 months, depending on the season. It's crazy how appreciative the dogs are after a good cleaning. They look and smell great, and they know it! All of my friends that I have recommended to them have responded very positively to their services. read more

Do not let Alison touch your animals!! She was extremely unfriendly! It was my first time there and I went because a friend takes her Maltese there and he always looks good. All she did was shave my dogs. Never cleaned up around their feet. One dog has his face uneven! My dogs had diarrhea for 2 days!! Obviously they were traumatized!! When I picked them up I cried! My overweight poodle got her ears completely cut down like when they are born. It will take years for them to grow back all because she had one knot on one ear. She could have brushed the ears out and cut out the knot. The. She argued with me that my poodle was a mini when in fact she is a toy. I asked her why she said that and she said they have to weigh under 10 lbs. I asked if she weighed my dog because if she has she would have seen she is 9 lbs. she is an overweight puppy mill dog so she isn't the perfect square shape. The entire experience has stayed with me for the past 4 days since the appointment Please please don't let Alison touch your animals!! read more

I am a small animal veterinarian who just moved to the area with my standard poodle and toy poodle. Needless to say I've been to many groomers over the years as I've moved place to place and this one was NOT impressive. Though they told me that there were only a few dogs being groomed that day, they were in a hurry to take the dogs to the back. They were unwilling to hear my very short summary of my dogs - Simple things that every groomer should ask their new clients. The groomer also did not introduce herself which I had never before seen - Most groomers like to introduce themselves in order to establish a client-pet-groomer relationship. When I picked my dogs up, they complained to me that my standard poodle did not behave hence they were not able to comb her. Though I understand that groomers may have a hard time with dogs that don't wish to be combed and I have sympathy for this, this particular dog has been groomed for 14 years without a problem. After I got home, I looked in my dogs' ears and they had not been cleaned. I could see how you might miss cleaning the ears of some dogs that may not usually have ear problems but poodles are notorious for having ear problems and most groomers are very diligent about cleaning ears. My dogs' ears was full of wax and hair- just like before the grooming appointment. Furthermore they had told me that they shaved the bottom of my poodle's feet- not true. Unfortunately both as a client and a veterinarian I cannot recommend this place under any circumstances. When I called them to discuss these problems they told me it was the bather's fault and that they would talk to them. This is not be blamed simply on the bather as everyone in the dogs grooming should have noticed the waxy ears and unshaved feet. It was obvious that they did not take pride in their work nor were they interested in keeping customers. read more
