I brought my puppy here and was a little nervous because he'd had a panic attack while trying out doggie daycare (I actually got a call from them). But right from the beginning, Pet Spa put me at ease. They were so sweet with my puppy, and they had such a good feeling right from the start. Three hours later, my puppy looked happy and had a beautiful summer haircut. Everything about this place inspired confidence. read more

I am a small animal veterinarian who just moved to the area with my standard poodle and toy poodle. Needless to say I've been to many groomers over the years as I've moved place to place and this one was NOT impressive. Though they told me that there were only a few dogs being groomed that day, they were in a hurry to take the dogs to the back. They were unwilling to hear my very short summary of my dogs - Simple things that every groomer should ask their new clients. The groomer also did not introduce herself which I had never before seen - Most groomers like to introduce themselves in order to establish a client-pet-groomer relationship. When I picked my dogs up, they complained to me that my standard poodle did not behave hence they were not able to comb her. Though I understand that groomers may have a hard time with dogs that don't wish to be combed and I have sympathy for this, this particular dog has been groomed for 14 years without a problem. After I got home, I looked in my dogs' ears and they had not been cleaned. I could see how you might miss cleaning the ears of some dogs that may not usually have ear problems but poodles are notorious for having ear problems and most groomers are very diligent about cleaning ears. My dogs' ears was full of wax and hair- just like before the grooming appointment. Furthermore they had told me that they shaved the bottom of my poodle's feet- not true. Unfortunately both as a client and a veterinarian I cannot recommend this place under any circumstances. When I called them to discuss these problems they told me it was the bather's fault and that they would talk to them. This is not be blamed simply on the bather as everyone in the dogs grooming should have noticed the waxy ears and unshaved feet. It was obvious that they did not take pride in their work nor were they interested in keeping customers. read more

UPDATE-After a real bad experience recently (butchering my dogs haircut and lying about it), I will not be returning to the Pet Spa- loss of a 3 yr customer, good going. read more

I think this place sucks. I brought my dog in once to get groomed and the woman in the shop at the time barely paid any attention to my dog or to what I was saying about what I wanted. I left him there, but I was really nervous about it. I picked him up a few hours later and the cut was not great, he wasn't even all the way dry and they charged me about $60. THEN, I got home and realized that he had some other dogs tags on him!! I called the shop and they were like "Oh, I probably switched them. Maybe call the # on the tags you have" - she wasn't even apologetic! I called the tag # and they had, indeed, been switched and I had to drive to East Cambridge to switch them! It was a mess. I'm never going back. read more

I had my dog groomed here once when her regular groomer was on vacation. Although she looked fine after being groomed, the staff wasn't memorable (a good thing since they must not have been bad, but a bad thing because I also take note when people are nice) and, most unfortunately for them, they really left me unimpressed from a safety point of view. Here is my gripe: I come in to pick up my pup, I open the front door (They are located on a busy street, construction, traffic, etc.) and my dog comes bolting out of the grooming area to greet me. They apologize for her jumping on me, not realizing that it is *my* dog. What if it hadn't been me who walked through the door then? Why was she carelessly let out of the grooming area? For all of you who love your dog as much as I love mine, you can understand why this lack of safety would concern me. read more

I called to ask for an appointment on a Saturday. In my experience having many animals over the years, Saturday is NOT an unusual day to request grooming! The woman was very snotty when I asked if they had any availability just responding "we're not open on Saturdays..." in a very condescending tone. Well, they could offer to groom my two girls for free for a year and I wouldn't step foot in that place! How terrible to treat a potential new client this way the first time they call! Doesn't seem like a great attitude to have as a recession continues. read more

This place is terrible. Staff are rude, specially the lady with the tattoos, she couldn't care less about customer service and he attitude is so "blah". She took my dog and didn't even know how to handle him, also said that my dog didn't behave so she put him in a kennel, and because we were 20 min late to the appointment she said that now it would take even longer for my dog to be ready because she booked appointments at 8:15 and 8:20 who actually were on time (unlike us). I thought "mmm you can cut a dogs hair in 15 min and that's why you book appointments every 15 min?" Anyway, I just think they are rude and don't care about neither dogs nor people so I don't see why we should keep trying to remain "loyal clients". It sucks. Will never go back. read more

I brought my Goldendoodle there to get groomed yesterday. The shop is clean and has lots of delicious looking dog treats. My dog seemed to enjoy her time there because she was able to play with other dogs while she was waiting. And the quality of my dogs grooming was, for the most part, pretty good. So why the 2 stars you ask? Well simply put, I don't like being taken advantage of, and that is how I felt after being in the shop for less than 10 minutes. When I first called to get a rough idea of the cost for a grooming, I was told it would be about $54. When I dropped her off, I mentioned that I wanted to pay in advance, since I wouldn't be the one picking her up later in the day. That is when I was told that since this particular breed is prone to matting, the cost could be higher if she has a lot of matts. So the groomer/assistant (unfortunately I don't know her name, but I don't think she was the owner) ran her hands through my dog's coat for about 8 seconds (yes, I counted) and said that my dog did have a few matts and that the price was going to be $72. I politely mentioned that since this is the first time I've owned a dog with this type of coat, it would be great if she could show me what these matts look like, so I can look out for them in the future. Her response: "Oh.... well I mean, they aren't really big matts... just sorta little 'pin matts'... so they might be hard for you to see..." Interesting the she was able to find them in a few short seconds, but was unwilling (unable?) to show me the matts that she had found. Long story short, I can understanding charging more for a dog that has a lot of matting because it is more difficult to do the grooming. But I find it to be a terrible business practice to charge more simple because a particular breed is prone to matting, whether or not the dog being groomed actually has any matting. Unless every other groomer in the area suddenly goes out of business, I don't expect to return here to get my dog groomed again. read more

I am completely and totally stunned beyond belief. NEVER BRING A CAT HERE. I brought my cat in for a standard brush out, nail trim, and to get a 5-6 small mats removed. We do this every few weeks at PetSmart, but unfortunately they were too full to take him. He is a long-hair maine coon, and his fur gets into little clumps in a couple spots where he lays down, near his tail. Especially in summer, when his coat really comes in. They brush it out with ease using de-matters at PetSmart, or--if it's a bad case--have to buzz the tiny clump (and just the clump). He is very furry, and it has never been noticeable when I pick him up from PetSmart. They asked me if they can shave the mats, and I said "of course, if that's necessary". That doesn't mean--to anyone on this planet--shaving down his entire back coat! I get the cat home, and he has been shaved in the most haphazard way possible! Shaved right down, all along his sides, and half of his right hind leg. He looks like a burn victim. It is the laziest thing I could imagine anyone doing. They just took some clippers and went to town. This might be appropriate, say, for a feral cat with 58 dreadlocks. Who on Earth would think this is acceptable? When my wife called in stunned disbelief, they offered to shave the rest of him! Oh, lord. I just looked closer. They shaved his entire belly. I feel like I'm on that old Candid Camera tv show. Amazing. My only charitable explanation for this surreal experience is that they do not get cats often, and they do not know anything about them. Please don't add to their "knowledge". The kicker: it cost $75 (PetSmart is $25). I'd pay $150 to have known to never set foot in this establishment. I don't know what to say. It is astonishing. read more

They gave my poor boy a CHOP SHOP job. His hair is uneven everywhere & for 60 dollars at that O_o had I wanted him to look like a 4 year old gave him a hair cut, I would have sought out a 4 year old with scissors. I have done a better job myself. The staff wasn't particularly nice either but after I saw their "grooming" job it's pretty evident customer service isn't on their list of priorities. Needless to say I will not be returning. read more

Pet Spa - CHOP SHOP job. His hair is uneven everywhere & for 60 dollars at that! O_o - Pet Groomers Near Me - Somerville, Massachusetts

I took my puppy here two times, the first was for his first hair cut ever that I was very nervous for. He is a energetic Yorkie so I was afraid of them hurting him. The first haircut was very uneven and choppy which I understood because he is a puppy who had never had his hair cut.The second time he got a haircut was a very different story. I told them that I didn't care what his hair cut looked like as long as his face was cleaned up because I am aware of his energy level as a puppy. I called three hours after I dropped him off to see if he was close to being done or if I should head home after doing errands. My dog was still not done. About an hour later I got a call that my dog was done and that I could pick him up in an hour. Very confusing, if he was done why should I wait An hour to pick him up after he has been there for so long. When I picked him up he was groomed very nicely and even(the same person groomed him both times ). The only thing was that he was very lethargic and out of it. He continued to be this way until the next day when he woke up. I am convinced that they gave my dog something to calm him down before his haircut. This is absolutely not acceptable and we will not be back. read more

Not exactly sure how this place has a 4 and a half star rating..? Unless you have a dog that you get shaved, don't go here! I have a yorkie, and yes we like to keep her shaggy, but I paid $45 for a wash, nails to be clipped, and a trim around face butt and feet.. She looks exactly the same... Her hair has no style, not even a bow!! very disappointed. read more

We have always been pleased with Pet Spa. The owner, Theresa left another groomer we used to go to. We followed her! I regularly bring in my two standard poodles. The white one has a love for mud and dirt. She always comes out of the "beauty parlor", looking great.. There have been times when the girls warned me, she may need to get cut really short, or even shaved in some areas. They do their best and that's never happened. Our black one is a big teddy bear, typical poodle-like personality. You know when your dog drags you in the store, it must be A-Ok! That happens every two weeks, as we have a standing appointment. I find them flexible with my schedule, bonus for me. The other groomer we went to had the dogs between 8-10 hours. Ridiculous! Here, maybe 6. For five++ years we have been coming, every other week. I wish I reviewed them sooner. Only negative. We would love to see more goodies in the store. Then again, it makes me think, the store not being full, they must be busy grooming! Which, in essence is their business. The cookies they do have are great tho! read more

My Cocker-Poo, Buster, has been going monthly for over a year now and we love these folks. We've tried several other places over the years, nothing awful, but Buster is a nervous fellow, more so now that he's over 14 y.o. -- but at Pet Spa he comes out calm as well as beautiful. The open room, the booking of similar sized dogs, and the gentle manner of the girls all help. They are careful of his bad hips and willing to do anal gland cleaning (yuck) when needed. Reasonable prices, convenient booking times, it's all that. read more

Theresa and her dream team have been taking my crazy puggle under their wing for daycare, nail clippings and baths for the past 6 mths. I have been a customer of pet spa for just about 5 years my puppy (now very big puppy @ 5 yes old) started going to doggy day care there and has always been groomed there why change a good thing.. But aside from their awesome grooming and fun shop I had to write a review about something that happened while dropping my dog off one day I noticed out the window a elderly woman chasing a dog that had gotten away I said out loud oh my god and the next thing I know the owner Theresa grabbed a leash and ran out the door and caught the dog down the street. When you find people who truely love animals you know your animals will always been safe and loved.... Not to mention the goody bags my girls got for Halloween read more

Love, love, love my pet spa girls! I first started going to Pet Spa a year ago when my golden lab Sam got into a minor disagreement with a skunk. You can only imagine how happy I was to find a groomer who was willing to take him on the spot. Really, I can cut my dogs hair fine, it isn't terribly challenging and my dog is pretty chill about it. However, he hates having his nails cut and some are black and some are white, so I figure leave it to the professionals (for whom by all accounts he is fine with). I have been taking him here for about a year now, I like it because I not only do not have to deal with trimming his nails; but because they do not leave the dogs in individual kennels, it also gives him some much needed socialization. He spends his days with a JRT who, is a typical hyper JRT. I have never found the price to be all that expensive, from what I recall it is around the same price as PetSmart Grooming. I would rather give my $$ to an indie shop when given the chance. That said, I do not think it has ever been the same price twice, though I think that has more to do with how long I leave him there. I have never had any issues with the people who work there, they have all been really nice and helpful. Sometimes they even tease and spray his Mohawk, which is awesome. read more

I LOVE Pet Spa. I have been going here for 5 years now. A couple friends had recommended Pet Spa and I was hesitant because it is not close to my house at all. I have tried a couple other places and this place is def. the best (I always go back!!) The women that work there are all WONDERFUL. They do not cage the animals and let them play together (unless there is an issue I am assuming). The way they treat the animals is exceptional. They do great haircuts and my little yorkie always smells great when leaving. They have a bakery and sell cute little toys and clothes for dogs. I have seen cats there too. I have also used their doggy day care when we had construction done on our house. I would highly recommend going here, I usually go to Meghan but all the girls are great and the price range is similar, give or take, to other places. You feel safe leaving your pet there, they treat them just as if they were their own! read more

The staff of Pet Spa was very nice, however they took 4 hours to groom my dog... He is a 5 month old puppy, first hair cut. The appointment was at 10AM, and they told me that because he was a puppy they might do part of the job in order to short up the time and that he have a less stressful experience. Of course, I agree with this approach. The surprise was that they took until 2:30PM to finish. I don't think this is OK. I understand that they are very busy with other dogs, but then why make an appointment? Was just too much... I like the place and it is conveniently located close to my home, but I will look for alternatives. I just don't want my dog to be locked in a cage for 4 hours in a very noise place considering hairdryers and other dogs barking. This is just cruelty. read more

I took my dog in for a wash (not grooming - I specifically said my dog didn't need that) and when I picked him up he looked fine. Within a day he had terrible problems with his anus and penis area. They cut his hair in both areas and when doing so they must have cut his skin. It became irritated and raw in both areas. He was dragging his butt around for days and licking his crotch area constantly. I even took him to the vet to get his anal glands drained in case it was that (though he never had that problem before), but the problem was clearly from the grooming. I will never take my dog here again. I feel so bad that I trusted them and they hurt my dog. read more

Writing this review after being unsure of how a grooming experience should be and having a much better one somewhere else. Having just adopted my dog I wasn't sure what to expect out of a groomer. The staff was not very friendly or interested in my dog. They certainly weren't rude but we actually had more interest in our dog from the groomers at petsmart. Our dog was adopted and was a mess, covered in mats. I was able to comb most of them out and had washed and dried him once before going to Pet Spa. Dropping him off the staff didn't even come out of the back, making me wait. Then it took 5 hours for him to be washed, dried and clipped. The haircut was sloppy. The place where they shaved a large mat had a burn, that scabbed. Our dog was unsettled for the rest of the day. We have recently taken him to another groomer and had a completely opposite experience, happy and wonderfully groomed dog in 2 hours, friendly and interested staff. Now I know that the experience at pet spa is not something that is the norm. read more

I brought my mini poodle here for a trim. When I picked him up a few hours later, I found him completely shaved and this in the middle of February. The groomer said she had to shave him because he was too matted just to trim. I was suspicious of this but I just paid and looked past it. Then, my dog spent the next week moping and being irritable. We started to wonder if something traumatic happened to him at the groomer and on examination found two hard scabs, one at the end of each ear. So on top of ignoring my instructions to trim and not shave him, they shaved him so carelessly as to clip the ends of his ears. Now the scabs itch and I have to keep him from scratching so they can heal. A very disappointing experience. read more
