They have an open back yard, perfect for puppy games and fun on a hot day. And they are all about making sure the dog is happy and well matched. We adopted a rescue dog 2 years ago that we learned had severe separation anxiety and exhibited fear around other dogs. We were concerned about how things would go but were very impressed from the moment we first contacted Crate Escape. We initially brought Cookie to the Charlestown location which has lots of big dogs and, because that's how big dogs have fun, can be a bit boisterous at times. The excellent staff there told us they thought the Huron Ave location would be a better situation for Cookie. They were right. They did a thorough screen to ensure the environment would be safe for both Cookie and other dogs, and helped us ease her in, initially dropping her off for only a couple of hours at a time on less busy days so she'd have time to acclimate. Two years later and she's staying the entire day twice a week and she *LOVES* it. It's like her puppy play date which she returns from exhausted but happy every single time. The staff are absolutely incredible, and we are sincerely grateful to them as they have improved our pup's quality of life substantially. Obviously, all puppy all the time would be every dog owner's dream, but if that's not possible and you have to work to pay the bills and keep them in kibble, you really can't go wrong with Crate Escape! read more

Crate Escape Two is one of my bichon Hockney's favorite places to play with other dogs and I always feel great taking him there. There are not a lot of places where dogs under 35 pounds and of all ages are the focus and have a clean and varied indoor and outdoor spaces to play. There is a good number of attentive staff to take care of the dogs. In addition, CE2 has figured everything out and handles everything with as little red tape and rules as possible and has a well-equipt store and good food choices and boarding facilities. I have nothing but good things to say about CE2. When I come at the end of the day to pick up Hockney, he greets me enthusiastically then wants to run back in the doggie area again to play, even after a long day! read more

Updated review based on their price increases over the last few years. Most recently I learned I was charged a $45 pick up fee, in addition to an $85 overnight fee because my dog was there on a holiday night- for a total of 18 hours. The rationale for the fee was because the place was technically closed when I picked him up on Labor Day. When I asked how I could have avoided the fee- I was told my dog would have had to stay another night- at $85- for care I didn't need. To add a 50% premium to the already high overnight stay to literally walk to dog to the parking lot- is absurd. My only advice to Crate is to be honest about the nightly costs on these holidays and not to slap unavoidable fees on the cost sheet to appear more competitive. read more

I've been taking my dog to day care at Raining Cats & Dogs for a few months now. He's gone from being really submissive and skittish around other dogs to more comfortable/playful with other pooches under their care. When I first started bringing him, the staff were really great about making sure to slowly introduce him to the other dogs so that he wasn't overwhelmed or too nervous. They seemt to really understand doggy behavior. The staff there seem to love all the dogs that come in, and give them all time to play and snuggle on the couches. Whenever I come in the staff are sitting on the couches/chairs covered with all sort of dogs in various stages of sleep. The other benefit? When my dog comes home at night he is pooped from a full day of play! read more

Sadly Oscar hasn't been in Cambridge for 6 months now, but the AMAZING job that Raining Cats & Dogs has done on transforming his behavior still stands. We're now in San Diego and have been to the dog park a few times. He's great with all of them! Where before he would bark and get annoyed, now its non-stop tail wagging. They really are great at watching and making sure the dogs are well behaved. When we move back to Cambridge, we'll definitely be back! read more

Great staff; always friendly. They really love the dogs! Our dog always has fun here. Only downside is that sometimes it's hard to get a last-minute spot if you aren't a daily customer (we don't use the daycare every day, just on an "as-needed" basis). Crate Escape Too (Huron Ave) is the absolute best. They have taken amazing care of my little rescue dog and he's really come out of his shell. When we started going, he would just stand at the gate and cry all day. Now, about 5 months later, he literally leaps up and down in the car seat when I arrive to drop him off and then runs into the building. They are all friendly, helpful, kind to the animals, and I trust my dog with them completely. read more

They love our dog almost as much as we do. Goose the dog is preposterously happy at RC&D and their not-at-all-evil twin, Crate Escape. He plays all day, non-stop, with the other dogs there. (RC&D posts video of it on their facebook page to prove it!) He cries a little bit when it is time to leave. Then he comes home and sleeps - usually a ratio of two units of completely conked-out dog for every one unit of time spent at RC&D. We just got back from a quick out-of-town weekend where we left the Goosester at RC&D. We were gone for two days and picked him up Monday morning. He was delighted; now he's asleep, and we don't expect to hear from him until Thursday evening. Bless you RC&D. read more

Love, love, love Crate Escape too. The managers and employees are really personable. They love telling me funny things that my dog Zoe does during the day. They are always eager to help answer questions about treats, food, clothing (I got Zoe a sweater here in Oct 2013 and she has received a number of compliments on it). The guys and gals who work here make sure all the dogs get along and even give them hugs and carry them around when the pups are extra needy. Love this place and would recommend anyone with small to medium dogs to go here. In the summer, the outdoor space is available for the dogs to play as well (which is a huge plus). read more

We take our dog Jasper to Crate Escape every day. We love this place and the staff are really helpful and nice! Jasper is a high energy and social dog and we have a toddler at home so taking care of both of their needs was getting to be difficult. It is so wonderful to bring Jasper to Crate Escape and to know he is getting love, play and attention. When he comes home he is much better behaved, too. It's like he has gotten all his needs met at Crate Escape so he doesn't have to take his frustrations out on chewing up our carpet! I don't know what we would do without this place and we are really grateful for everything Crate Escape does for our whole family. Oh! Also, I should say that Jasper is little-- just shy of 9 lbs. I was worried he might not be safe among the bigger dogs-- but he has done really well and I never worry about him anymore. We LOVE Crate Escape Too! Our crazy puppy Poppy loves going and is exhausted when she gets home. I'm sure she's had a day of fun! Whenever we walk by in the Village she's always pawing at the door! We've also used Crate Escape in Belmont and has a seamless time there. I prefer the smaller Cambridge location just because I have a feeling Poppy DOESN'T STOP in Belmont. I have got to tell you this place is amazing! They are so kind, caring and friendly. Our dog Molly goes to doggie daycare there a few days a week and absolutely loves it. She comes home so happy and tired (the true sign of a great doggie daycare). Just to give you an idea of how impressive they are, on Molly's birthday they sent her a birthday card in the mail! What a nice little touch. Also, they have a really nice shop with all sorts of dog toys, treats, food, etc. which offers a great variety and wonderful grooming services (through their sister location - Crate Escape) I'd definitely recommend them. read more

Cute store, friendly folk, good selection. Some of the things are pricey. Okay, most of the things are pricey. Cambridge pricey, not Boston sky-high pricey. But great quality! So, find something you really like and shell out the money for it because you will be pleased. The day care is a bit strange to me. I never see the dogs play (I used to live right down the street and was in frequently for treats). They look happy enough but they all just sit around and I don't see anyone providing stimulation for them. As a cat owner, this shop seems to be raining way more dogs than cats. But as a dog enthusiast, I'm okay with that. I dropped in to look around at pet supplies, but ended up petting a gorgeous wolf hound who poked his head up over the doggy daycare wall to say hello. My dog *loves* going here. At first, he was a little nervous and anxious being in a new spot and away from us (he's usually with his people all day). But after just a few visits, he's barking in excitement to go in and play with his friends. Crate Escape Too is amazing!! My dog loves this place so much, he gets excited in the car when he knows we are headed here-- can't get there fast enough in the morning. The daycare has an indoor and outdoor section, so there is plenty of space to run around. He is always happily exhausted when I pick him up. Moreover, I am very protective of my dog, and I entirely trust everyone who works here. They know my dog as well as I do, are very knowledgeable about dogs in general, and are emergency certified. On top of that, these have to be some of the nicest people in the world. The manager, Vanessa, couldn't be sweeter, and Tess, Clark and the rest of the crew are so friendly and professional. One day I was struggling to switch out my dog's tags, and Vanessa not only helped me, but gave me a special clip that makes this not-so-fun task much easier. Despite the fact that it was on sale in the store, she refused to let me pay for it. This is just one of many examples of the over-the-top great service I've received from the people at Crate Escape. I have had a few bad experiences with this place, both with daycare and retail. I came in one day and they performed a trial for my dog. I was not impressed with the quality at which the people that were watching the dogs were they seemed to not be so focused on every pet. I did bring my dog in for a half day of daycare and while they were trying to leash up my dog there was no one with the other dogs the person was separated from the dogs by a fence and one of the dogs was starting a brawl with another one. I was not very impressed they should have enough people to make sure there isn't things like that. nextly, I was looking at their products for dogs like leashes, toys, and treats and was greatly taken back by the prices. They are greatly marked up. I would suggest that if anyone is looking for a place to buy things for their pet to go to pet supplies or petco they are way cheaper than this place. I would not waste my money on products here. Lastly, I had read about with daycares for dogs the people who work with pets should be certified in first aid and cpr for dogs. I originally suspected that they all were. I came to find out that is not true they are not trained in any animal problems ex. seizures, diabetics, and dog bites. read more

i am disabled and have never been treated with such inhumanity. in less than 5 minutes they almost seriously injured my little dog, gave me the runaround regarding boarding, and then in the final hour cancelled just as i am about to leave the country for life-saving treatments for an incurable disease. shame on these people. i wouldn't trust them with a specialty breed anyway. the manager never returned my phone call and never offered an apology after admitting they made a mistake (but not owning up to all of them). never again. so disappointed. we had always had such good experiences here before i was disabled. read more

This place is soooooo awesome! We drop off our puppy and he gets to play and play and play with so many different dogs. He just loves it. It's been invaluable to his socialization and confidence and it helps him burn off a lot of energy (he zonks out as soon as we get him home). The staff members are warm, very friendly, and attentive. I have been to the store a few times in the past and the service was great. Recently my new puppy had some serious allergic reactions to the food we have been giving him. He is now only allowed to eat a bison based diet until we find the cause of the allergy. I am having trouble finding places that supply bison food/treats. All though they did not have the raw bison we were searching for they did have a large selection of grass fed bison raw hide treats. The staff members were very knowledgeable about the foods that were carried in the store and offered a few take home samples of the foods that might work for my puppy. She also gave me two brochures of the raw food diets that are carried in the store. Dispite there being only two people working, and one tending to the dogs(in the play pen), they did a great job making sure my needs along with the other custumer's were met! read more

It is a cute store, I have to admit. My experience here was horrible though! When I walked in, a smell of disgustingness hit me, then when I walked up to the woman who worked there, I immediately smelled cigarettes. I tried not to let that bother me too much but then during our conversation, the woman appeared to be "under the influence". Already I decided at this point that I would not entrust my precious dog with someone irresponsible enough to carry themselves this way. I really love the doggie day care here. I was having surgery with an inpatient hospital stay, and didn't figure out until a couple of days in advance that we would need dog care as well as child care and home nursing, etc. Once we lined up her vaccination papers and they got a chance to meet her, they were super-accommodating about letting her come for many days on very short notice, having sitters and different people drop her off at different times, and making sure she wasn't too anxious in a new environment (she's a rescue dog.) Most excellent kennels or day care facilities have an extended process to get new dogs in, but they accelerated everything for us, just out of the goodness of their hearts. She's been back several times since, always enjoys herself, and the people are super-friendly and very caring. Such a boon to have them here, and to know that they are so reliable and friendly! read more
